My theory on the song is a bit meta on Vessel’s real life. People were probably telling him how talented he was and he should just go mainstream route for music like American idol etc. but he knew he wouldn’t be happy and would have to sell out. So looking up he would see diamonds (short term success) then Pentagrams (selling out). There’s other allusions like dressing him up as a pop star/ mannequin. You guessed my future mapped on to your fantasy. Instead he went his own way and now everyone gets to watch him ascend.
I very much hear a very damaged man when I listen to them. As you go through all their albums it very much sounds like he’s been through some very nasty relationships and breakups. There’s pain everywhere in his lyrics as you listen into his phrasing and word structures
@@JoeRogers-i7p”I can offer you a black lit paradise” is a reference to his old project Blacklit Canopy. It’s also referenced in another song “Ecluid” where he says “It’s still the Autumn leaves. These ancient canopies that we used to lay beneath”
Late to the party but to me the diamonds in the trees line describes the "ignorance is bliss" that one or both people in a toxic relationship feel. Diamonds in the trees (the good parts of the relationship, healthy or not) keeping you so captivated and distracted that you completely miss or purposely ignore the pentagrams in the night sky (the red flags, warning signs, or unhealthy habits piling up enough to "fill the sky"). The first part of the song illustrated his awareness of what the other person is doing, looking for validation by trying to mould him into a reflection of themselves. As if they were looking for a way to absolve or "free" themselves from their own shortcomings. Taking what they wanted from the relationship and leaving after they got what they felt they were looking for. To me, the last part of the song is him accepting or realising that he may have been doing the exact same thing, both of them feeding into the toxicity of the relationship. He comes to terms with that fact and finally feels like he can try to move on, to at least take what he learned from the relationship and move passed it, to "ascend". Instead of finding the kind of "freedom" described in the beginning of the song, he found a different freedom or "redemption" in realizing the relationship for what it was and the part he played in it.
I interpret the lyrics to be Vessel is in a situation where he wants love from someone, but that person is not really looking for love. They're looking for validation in him The hip hop/R&B section is basically their toxic relationship played out and by the end he's realizing this isn't going to work The second piano section at the end I believe is Vessel already deciding to move on and breaking the cycle. The other person tries to come back, but Vessel's redemption and eternal ascension is leaving this behind "You make me wish I could disappear" is still fighting the feelings he has for this person but trying to remain strong in ascending from this situation
Oooh yes, I see that! For sure. Later on, I was actually thinking that maybe the piano part at the end was him coming to these realizations from the place where he ascended to. It’s fun because you can keep on speculating! Love them.
The line “blood stains on the collar means just don’t ask” hit me hard because it’s powerful imagery and sadly relatable to myself and many others out there who’ve dealt with abuse. Where you’d rather talk about literally anything else instead of opening up about it. Can only imagine what Vessel has experienced in his lifetime.
It's the most misheard line though. It's "bloodstains on the canopies, just don't ask". Which fits nicely to the "diamonds in the trees" line. It's one of a few lines on the album that reference canopies....for some reason. Worship.

This hits hard…… 😢 Eternal ascension…….. wanting to leave the earth to escape the pain. Followed up with Are You Really Okay….. is it Vessel looking back in, from the outside, after trying to manifest that god awful thought….. this album is so deep. Take Me Back to Eden is wanting it all back only to be engulfed by anger and toxicity again. Finally to finish with Euclid. The resolution, the healing, realising it is okay to move forward and be someone new. It’s fucking beautiful.

In the context of the lore, I see this song as being a turning point for Vessel. He has realized how detrimental his servitude to Sleep has been for him, and is finally realizing that his only way out, is to ascend beyond Sleep's grasp. Of course, at face value, it's about breaking away from a toxic relationship.
ABSOLUTELY. YES. I hear not very many people actually trying to come up with a lore explanation for this song, but this is it! You hit it right on the nail.
Pentagrams are just stars. They also bring about entities (portals) and if you know anything about the correlation between angels and stars, it makes sense. I think he’s done some dark sh-t (or was forced too) and these songs reflect that battle between good and evil we all battle to some degree or another within ourselves. Adding in the Sleep entity who is either pushing him to or away, or both at the same time. People are out here saying they’ve slept with succubus and incubus (to simplify - demons), so the notion of the sleep entity being a motivator isn’t to far fetched. Ascension within itself is a factor of the occult. It’s emphasized more when they say “nothing lasts forever.” To me, is symbolic of sacrifice. Yeah, I could get more detailed all occult stuff, but then I’ll get the fans who scream “Sleep Token isn’t occult,” to which I say, yes they are and because I appreciate that element of their music (or lifestyle who knows) due to the studies I’ve put myself through on all things “occult,” it tends to draw me in even further to the band that is Sleep Token. Also, they all consider themselves “vessels.” Vessel, Vessel ii, vessel iii, vessel iv and the writers are primarily vessel and ii.
I love hearing new reactions to Sleep Token! I love also that you're identifying a dichotomy and metaphor within the music. There's a lore/mysticism to Sleep Token that isn't often known. To keep it short, the lead singer Vessel says a deity named "Sleep" came to him in a dream. So I have always said that Sleep Token's music is written in such a way that it can be taken from the perspective of someone who is either in, or just ended a bad human relationship, or someone who is in a bad relationship with their God... And I think that's really fucking powerful and beautiful.
Basically any Sleep Token song is worth checking out. I'm sure people have mentioned that their three albums form a sort of 'trilogy' but I cannot find the words to accurately describe the emotional and spiritual journey those albums will take you on. It would be cool to see you start at the beginning and just react to each song one and by one. I've never experienced something so deeply impactful and I hope everyone takes the time to experience it for themselves. For me it was the first time I think I had a spiritual experience
Granite is now my favorite Sleep Token song but when I first heard it I didn't really dig it that much. I believe that's because of the summoning creating expectations when there shouldn't have been any. You can only expect to be pleasantly surprised. That's it. Love the way they keep you guessing.
All of their songs are connected lyric wise. For example, listen to the night does not belong to god, then listen to Euclid. You will find the comparison. They are amazing! I love Vessel’s voice.
. I think this song is actually about our relationship with the crystal ball Black mirror in our pockets called cell phones. It’s about our obsession with digital communication and how we’re being corrupted by it. How it’s separating us from ourselves. Diamonds in the trees pentagrams in the night sky. Cell phone towers and satellites flying over. Anyone else agree?
And let’s face it, most of us have a religious type relationship with our cell phones. If you don’t believe that’s true, examine your own relationship with your phone more closely.
I really like this take. There are a few consistent and mutually reinforcing metaphors across the last three albums; technology is a significant one usually associated in the lyrics with foreign and often malevolent influence. My personal favorite is the chemical allegory (sugar, alkaline, aqua regia as titles) because I’m a chemist by trade and it’s fun to see how that’s interpreted into metaphor. The mythical/cosmic/religious imagery is also fascinating to keep track of across the albums. All these themes (in my listening) orbit a central narrative of a relationship of some sort, which could be personal, deific, technological, chemical, or any combination of them. The fact that one project (across three albums) captures so much of human experience without becoming mutually exclusive, while also feeling very genuine to the experience of the artist, is a phenomenon beyond accolade.
As a Sleep Token self stated NERD I want to blow your mind and inform you that this album is part of a Trilogy album set. That's right it means that the first 3 albums they released are a trilogy. So the 3 albums will give information/context about songs in the next and previous songs. It's about a clout chasing Leach Who used vessel because she wanted To ride his coat tails to success And all Vessel really wanted was her love. And when the project they were doing together didn't pan out She left. That's when he saw her for what she was and what she was doing.
