Totally agree. Those side steps are fugly only cause I don’t like these tube style steps where there’s such a huge gap between the body/frame and the step. I have the tiger armor slider inspired running boards and they are tubed but way more heavy duty snd just look much better. Gonna keep these on unti I have enough and need actual rock sliders.
I put 295s on mine too. Basically a 34 inch tire. Glad I did. Also 4.56 gears. Got my power and mileage back too. Regear is worth it. Sliders for sure.
Looks awesome! As for steps, keep them on until you have a replacement. They don't look bad...and as far as protection...sounds like you won't be getting into a situation where sliders would be needed....so these will work for what you go through. They help keep rocks from flying up and scratching the sides as well as something for you to kick the snow or mud off your feet before getting into the rig.
Damn that wheel/tire combo looks sick! I’m rocking 285/70/17 duratracs on -38 stealth blue br6 on my iceberg. Wish my tires were a little bigger though but nonetheless duratracs are the way to go. I would remove the sidesteps and look for some factory rock sliders. They’re not too out there and give it a nice look as well as enough protection for what you’re using your Fj for. Keep up the good work Mike!
Thank you for showing us how 295s look on the FJ. I currently have 265s and was thinking 285s might be the next big move up. I'm definitely going 295s on my new set of tires.
You should add uppers regardless of the tire size with that lift, lowers only need to be changed if they are needing new bushings. 315’s or 35’s won’t change ride quality either. Sliders will help much more, and it’s also a lifting point for hilift.
I took those side steps off day after I bought my FJ. They will become a hassle if you ever get hung up on a rock with them... Best to get some decent rock sliders!
I run 34 inch tires as well. And 1 1/4 wheel spacers. 2 inch lift. I did regear. To 4.56. glad I did it. You know sliders are best. But they cost a bit. I've used mine. So they already paid for themselves. But I do a fair amount of rock crawling. The wheel spacers made the look way more aggressive.
Black of Gun Metal would both look good, but the Gun Metal adds some awesome contrast IMO. Looks like a lot of room behind the front tire. Is that only from the bilstein lift, or did you need to do more mods (body chop, etc.)?
Planning to get some BFG or Falken/Yokohama 285/70/17. I've been told these are LT tires and would impact the transmission/gearbox in the long-term since they are heavier tired - been told to change the gear ratio. Did you have do that or face any problems?
Side steps gotta go! Get some nice rock sliders.definitely made the right choice in wheel color, black doesn’t photo well and doesn’t look good until your right on top of it and the gunmetal goes so well with the silver.great choice! question about the 17” wheels, offset is -10 what is the backspacing? Fj is starting to come together bud thanks for making these videos!
@@DrivenCompanion awesome thanks! That’s 8” wide I assume? I’ve been watching your videos and didn’t see anything about a bmc,are you getting any rub offroad with the 295’s? Thanks again for your help.happy holidays!
You don't feel the need to regear with the 295's? I just got an FJ with 35's and its awful. Trying to decide between 295/70/17, 285/75/17, or 285/70/17 now.
I think you should have been patient and let the 6112s settle. You’ll be taking them back off and going back to 6/4. It doesn’t make sense because you’re getting more lift than specified until those struts break in.
Even at the new height I'm sitting level. I'd be ok with a little settling in the front a rake wouldn't be a bad thing for when its loaded up. We'll see though...
@@DrivenCompanion Yeah I just went through this last summer. My 6112s on my 5th gen were too high for well over a month. Was at the 6/4 setting, but I went with the +1” B12 coils. Dropped the clips to 4/2 and it was perfect until a month later my tires were rubbing backing out of my driveway. Back to 6/4 and another alignment and it’s been perfect. Well I still had to add the ARB .5” trim packer on the driver side rear coil to completely git rid of the driver lean.
Your Gunmetal rims look great .. steps are useless for protection get some rock sliders. We've got the expedition one trail series rock sliders on our FJ and love them, saved me panel damage a few times now, can explore with confidence.
I agree! It looks good! I say just take the side steps off and wait until you are absolutely convinced about another step design.

Good choice with the gunmetal rims it looks 🔥
Rig looks great 👍🏻. I would say rock sliders. Take care 👋
I have the falken wildpeaks and they have been the best on my 4runner. Outperforms my previous ko2s

Thanks, sounds like a pretty cool setup you've got as well!
Looks great! Love the gun metal!
I concur on the gun metal as well. Nice looking truck.

That's such a good looking truck!
I drive a cement FJ that looks awesome, but still turn my head every time an FJ drives past.
Almost got a Cement TT with 9K miles... Such a cool color!
Wow, that looks really good.

Def gun metal, beautiful country out there
FJ looks great!
Not a sidestep fan. I have OEM sliders. They fit tighter to the body than the steps.

Any rubbing and BMC?
Did you have to body mount chop to fit the 295/70R17s?
Side steps look good
How's the ride now, with everything installed......6112s, 5100s and E rated 33.5" tire?? We need an update! :)

Did u have to do a BMC to fit those 295?

There is a leveling spacer kit for the FJ. can not recall where I got mine, but ARB or something.
the lean is because of the fuel tank is on one side.
Hi, can you still open your back window with that spare on there?
Surprised you didn't go with ultra terrains. Wheels look good.
I would have but I don’t think they make them in 295s
Gun metal looks great. How wide are this rims?
What do you think about (305/55R20) ride and fuel economy?
Take the steps off
295/70/17 on 3" lift ? Does it rubbed?
Where are these trails you film your reviews? Asking from the Willamette Valley.
Several different locations around CO. This one is Coyote Butte
Your Gunmetal rims look great .. steps are useless for protection get some rock sliders. We've got the expedition one trail series rock sliders on our FJ and love them, saved me panel damage a few times now, can explore with confidence.
I'll have to give those a look.
I do need new rims..but In near future
Side steps should go rocksliders if u get them for cheap better Protection
like the rims what brand are they?🤔
Stealth Custom Series SR8
Looks great bud! Hey, do those 295's have a 3ply sidewall?
Looks bad ass...looks just like mine but my size is standard...Nitto
Nittos best tires I ever had on my FJ. I was running bf Goodrich and nittos way better
Rock Sliders
Did you do the BMC to fit the 295's? The FJ looks great.
Yes I did
What lift did you use? Love your videos!
The full install is documented in my FJ playlist. I have Bilstein 6112s in the front and 5100s in the rear with B12 coils and an Ironman 4x4 spacer.
@@DrivenCompanion Would you still recommend the same set up to achieve a 3inch lift?
Hi. Did you have to do anything to fit the 295 on the spare tire mount? Fit okay?
No issues. The -10 offset wheels may help
Thank you!
What coils did you use for the front? I want those shocks but my coils are sagging from the weight of the bumper and winch.
I've got the Bilstein 6112s up front
Hey Mike, what butte is this? Is it out by the gun range?
Coyote butte
Ditch the steps and get some sliders
Man I'm jealous, i can't put 285 on a lifted 3rd gen tacoma without a CMC but you can put 295s on a lifted FJ.
I had to do a BMC to the FJ too if that makes you feel any better
@@DrivenCompanion Yikes I didn't know that. I feel better now.
@@DrivenCompanion Did you had to chop the front bumper to prevent rubbing as well?
Get sliders, sell the steps.
One log to a slider, no big deal. Log to steps, good luck selling them after
Remove the side steps looks better without them or put some n fab side steps
Stock sliders
LMAO take those off. It will look better without them
