As someone who deployed to Iraq with the 101st Airborne and carried an M4 with a round in the chamber I dont fault anyone for not or think any less of them. They put a discharge barrel just inside the front gate of every compound to clear your weapon into as you enter a secure area so as to avoid accidental discharges. I've seen men of every rank and background I've seen hard core infantry for life types I've seen em all check to ensure their weapon is safe and accidentally discharge into the barrel. I'm talking guys who have done it every day sometime several times a day for months have slipped up and had an accidental discharge. So yea you can think you're the most professional bad ass well trained firearms expert with more guns at home than a small army but that shit doesn't matter if the one time you dont have your mind where it should be cause your spouse or child is sick or was in a car accident and you go through your reflex moves to clear and safe your weapon and you miss a step and dont even realize it until your ears are ringing and hopefully you haven't put a hole in yourself or anyone else.
There is no such thing as an accidental discharge. It's a negligent discharge if a firearm discharges when not intended. The only accidental discharge is either a weapon malfunction from a defect in the firearm,or you've somehow been bumped somehow while your booger hook was on the bang switch. Anything else is NEGLIGENCE on the operators part.

To me the added layer of safety that a DA/SA trigger offers to carrying a firearm with a round in the chamber is what makes me confident and comfortable carrying daily. And while I support everyone carrying with a round in the chamber for the same reasons is many I also believe if someone doubts their ability to carry that way without a negligent discharge they should still carry without a round in the chamber and train that way. I dont want any firearm death/injury stats going up because of ego or sense of obligation to carry a certain way.
It greatly decreases the situations you can defend yourself, and can result in even more danger for yourself and everyone around you. There is a reason than any expert says to keep a round in the chamber. The only reason you would want to carry without a round in the chamber is inexperience... so suggest they get experience rather than encouraging a bad method. If someone was only ok with carrying a pistol fully disassembled, would you say that is the wrong way from a tactical standpoint? We have to learn from those who have gone before us, and too many people have died because of a slow draw, and having to rack the slide makes you slower in every situation... and forget a surreptitious draw.
@Warren: Racking the slide ALWAYS slows down your draw. You will need more of a window to draw than you would with a round in the chamber. Carrying your pistol in your hand is about the dumbest analogy I can think of. You would have to take into account having your hands free, other people's reactions to you, and being the first target. Having the fastest draw possible gives you the best odds at survival. Adding anything to it decreases the occasions you can safely draw. I would like to hear ANY situation that carrying without a round in the chamber is better that doesn't have to do with experience or negligence.... ANY.

@Warren: Well as long as I have your assurance that a four second draw is fine... perhaps give your assurances to the man who died in the church shooting... he had a four second draw and took a chest full of buck shot. Had he had a three second draw, he would likely still be alive. So again. Why would you ever want to add time and movement to a draw? Your excuse seems to be in case of negligence... So again, there aren't any situations that a fast/smooth draw won't work when a fast/rack draw will, but there are plenty the other way around. The industry standard is 2 seconds from concealed, but if you have to rack your slide and the other person doesn't, you lose. If the bad guy has a 2 second draw, and you have a two second draw but you also have to rack your slide, you have to pray for a bad shot. Why knowingly put yourself in that situation? The chances of you ever having to pull your firearm is one in a million, but you still go to the range... why? Because you prepare for the worst and hope for the best. There are plenty of ways to carry a firearm, but there are also right ways and wrong ways, bad ways and better ways. If you follow the firearm safety rules, you won't have any negligent discharges... so the only reason not to carry your pistol with one in the chamber is lack of experience or lack of confidence in your ability. Both can get you killed if you ever have to use your firearm. Watch all of the videos available online of people having to use their firearm... count how many have time to rack their slide. Now count how many die or lose the battle to the first hit because their firearm wasn't ready. There is a very good reason that you cannot find a firearms instructor who will suggest carrying your weapon without a round in the chamber...
I'm working my way back to carrying hot .I used to be all for carrying hot and used to call others idiots for not chambering . That is until I had a negligent discharge that thankfully didn't result in injury. It can happen to anyone . For those that say otherwise , I was in your shoes once. Like I said I'm working back to carrying hot but I have been taking it easy since my incident. Literally was exactly like this guy lol
I agree, that’s why most military require a thumb safety on striker fire pistols. It’s just another layer of protection. It’s like having a seatbelt and an airbag instead of just one or the other.
Theirs 2 types of gun people, the ones who had a negligent discharge, and those who HAVEN'T YET had a negligent discharge. I'm not a cop so I don't see or feel the reason to carry hot. Their are pros and cons to both.

Actually most cops couldn't hit ther own foot . They get about 20 hours of training, and never fire there guns again, thats why they have to mag dump to get a single hit. I've seen it a hundred times when I was swat.
I carry empty chamber for 2.5 years until I was comfortable with a round in the chamber, then I carry hot for almost 2 years. Last month, I had a negligent discharge, thankfully no one was hurt. Starting that day, I went back to empty chamber carry since the chances of a negligent discharge is significantly higher than one would ever need to draw to defend themselves.
What's worse: an unskilled guy carrying unchambered or someone who THINKS they're skilled carrying chambered? The fact is most people are unskilled, and those who decide to carry unchambered are making a responsible decision to minimize risk.
this is my thought, it's a risk analysis of your skill vs the likelihood of danger. if you are a cop or a soldier or a cashier at an inner city liquor store maybe you go hot, but cruising the walmart dairy when you have not been to the range in 15 months might not be the time to have one in the chamber.
Totally I agree. Concealed carry is about your safety and protecting it. There’s nothing wrong with going at your own pace. Could just one extra second save your life in that moment? Yes, but only if you are armed to begin with. Also there are handguns that are known to discharge without the trigger being pressed like the sig p320.
You do you and I will do me! I have been shooting for 35 years going to the range 2 times a week and I’m in no way scared to carry with one in the pipe but I do for my reasons like having that extra second to decide whether to act and in most situations you have a few seconds. In a scary situation it’s possible to pull the trigger pre maturely as you are pulling from the holster, it’s always interesting to hear so many people try and say certain ways are incorrect when they have never been in an actual situation. We should all support one another instead of suggesting a person is scared or doesn’t have enough training because they do things differently.
You're right but if you need the extra time to rack the slide to decide if you're life is at stake, it just might be too late. I'd rather make that decision before I draw. But like you said, whatever works for you. Only you can decide what's best for you.

Here’s how I look at it. Could I draw and rack the slide before someone with similar speed and strength as myself could reach me from 10 meters? Hell no. I’m extremely fast on my feet, and so are most criminals. If I was about to attack someone, and even suspect that they could have a weapon, I’m hitting them from behind. You ain’t Rambo, and you will die in your first encounter doing that stupid shit. Carry with a round in the chamber, and stfu.
Situational awareness beats all. Some have it, some will end up a victim for lack of it. The odds of ever having to shoot someone is slim for most people. Don't be cocky and go to places with a gun that you would not go to without a gun. Its like jerks that drive fast as hell in the snow because they have 4 wheel drive. A gun does not make you John Wick. THINK and stay alive.
Exactly, thinking is key. That's why I carry a big bore derringer, loaded with the most ridiculous rounds possible. I'm not trying to get into a gunfight. I just want to fire one or two rounds at the most likely attacker; one man with a knife. If they have a gun, and they're out of my effective range, I run. If I can't escape, I set up a counter-ambush. Simple plans work best.
I’m new to conceal carry and I don’t carry one in the chamber because I’m afraid of my error. However, you made really great points to the additional training needed, the time it takes to rack the slide, and real-time situation. I definitely rethink how I carry.

I'm the same way with my P365, but I realize the benefits of putting a round in the chamber. That's why I'm going to buy a DA/SA next, like the CZ P-01. That long, 16 lb initial trigger pull makes safe enough for me to carry with a round in the chamber.
I carried without one chambered for quite some time. I carry chambered now. I liked my ambidextrous safety, now I'm deleting it. After becoming comfortable, I trust me now. I know my gun a lot better. Changes come with experience. Also, my gun never leaves my side.
@Michael Freestone Weapon malfunctions happen. It's a fact of life. You can have all the competence and caution in the world and it still won't help with that. Having one in the chamber is completely useless: either they get the jump on you and you're already dead or you hear them coming and you'll have the 0.5 second it takes to get ready.

I agree that caring with a round in the chamber is being much more prepared then without, but it's better than not having any protection at all. I also believe that everyone should know their limitations and carry accordingly but should strive to improve them as well.
Yes. Carry what you are comfortable with. i don't usually carry but when I do, my vintage Colt snub nose 38 revolver has 6 loaded firing chambers, all ready to go at a moment's notice. No slide to rack or safety to disengage.
@@gojohnnygo6869 While working as an armed security guard years ago, company policy only allowed us to carry 6 shots 38 revolvers. My partners and I had a lot of practice shooting revolvers so we never felt undergunned at that time. That's why I still prefer revolvers over semi-auto pistols.
If you are in high risk job for sure. At home no 1 can walk into my home. Lot of time at home to rack. Its all about how you feel and train. No 1 ever talks about not panicking . Ex police Army hope well trained. Until it happen stress and panic is worse than not 1 in the chamber?

"Be prepared" has been my motto since serving in Vietnam (1st Inf. Div.), and I always carry one in the pipe, whether the firearm has a de-cocker or a manual safety, I'm 78 now and have never had an "accidental" discharge........... and have been packing for 48 years.

@@FirmeVatito702 Being in a war zone with activity in close proximity is completely different from shopping at the local grocery store. Never carry a Glock without it in a professional duty holster if it is condition one. Cocked and locked 1911 is supposed to be condition one.
In the Army they taught us a 1911 was to be carried with a round in the chamber and the weapon cocked and locked, that was 55 years ago and I still carry my 1911 cocked and locked today.

I never carry a live round in the chamber... simply because I rack a round in every time out of instinct... I have been drawing and shooting since i was a child and my father never let us carry one in the pipe it's all about muscle memory I also think I am very intuitive and in tune with my surroundings I can tell when somthing is about to jump off. I say carry they way you feel most comfortable... but definitely carry 💯
I carry on an empty chamber because I believe the chance of something bad happening to me or my loved ones from that chambered round is greater than the chance I will be in a situation where I don’t have time to chamber a round. To each their own.

It's best to carry regardless of your methods. However, my belief is that you won't have an indecent if you follow safety rules when carrying one in the chamber. The biggest issue with not carrying in the chamber isn't time... It's that there's a significant chance the incident/adrenaline will leave you inducing a malfunction when racking the slide OR you don't have a hand free (because you might be pushing off an attacker).
Yea as soon as I open my front door before work I just let off a couple rounds, even at work while opening my draw I'll let of a lil desk pop just incase those pencils and erasers dont jump me, safety first nah mean

This is a great topic. And I have a short to share about this particular incident that had happened to me and my family in the past. And note, this incident was based in the comfort of my own home. However before I get started on the story, ill add that I am an everyday carry person as well. Having that being said, this was December 23rd 2021 about 1:50am. My wife and I were sound asleep in our bedroom which is located at the back end of our house. She wakes up in confusion to the sound of 2 men conversing outside our front door, one of the men was talking rather loud and not trying to be stealthy at all where the other man was talking in a much softer tone. So, my wife suddenly wakes me up, says babe I think I hear someone out front trying to get into the house.. I instantly go into recon mode and grab my Smith and Wesson .40 cal off the night stand near me. Which I knew had a live round in the chamber followed by 15 rounds in the magazine. It was holstered from carrying it previously the day before, so I removed the holster and had it drawn, safety off. As I crawl out of bed and stealthily make my way into the hallway while in pitch black darkness, I can see the ambient light of my stove clock reflecting on the sliding glass door. The light suddenly blacks out, and it was at that point, I knew someone has made their way inside the house. I slowly step backwards back into the edge of our bedroom, explain to my wife that she needs to get down on the ground, crawl to the bathroom lock the door, keeps the lights off, and call the 911. So she starts to do so. I ease back out of the bedroom into that are hallway I was in before, and I hit my knees with my back to the wall, pistol drawn, and start to slowly move down the hallway toward the living room area. Our security system automatically locks the doors after 30 seconds at anytime between 10pm-5am so I now have the 2 guys trapped inside my house with me and my frantic wife. I remotely turn on our electric fireplace which spooks the guys and they turn for the front door not knowing they can't get out of the house. They quickly realize that they are stuck and I stand up out of nowhere right behind both of them with my 40 cal to one man's head instructing them to get on the ground and reminding them that they cannot exit the house without my code entry. So I get one guy on the ground and gunpoint, the other guy kicks me in the head while I was knelt down detaining the first guy. I get up discharge my firearm into the floor and tell him to get down on the ground once again. He does not comply and began fighting me once again, I discharged a second shot point blank into his hip because he was on top of me and I felt threatened for my life. He falls off of me, guy number one is still on the ground afraid to be shot at, so he's listening to instructions the entire time. I ask him what his intentions were for breaking into my home, he responded they were after the Christmas gifts and maybe some small electronics. I said to him he picked the wrong house to try that out at. Shortly the police arrived to my house, take full control of the situation, temporarily confiscated my firearm until the entire event was finished. Got everything on camera inside and outside the house. The police said I did the best thing I could do to protect my family and home. Returned my pistol to me, and arrested both the men. Bottom line is that you are right.. it happens so fast and sometimes you don't have the extra second available to rack a slide in the event of a violent emergency. I haven't had to use any of my firearms in that manor at all in my life until that day and haven't since, but at the time, the only thought that goes through my head was don't pull that trigger.. and did. It was the best decision I've ever made in the terms of line of duty. Be careful folks, and better yet, be prepared. You just never know what people will do.
It happened fast for you that's true. But you would have had more than enough time to put a round in the chamber in this case. And that is a good example for when I personally want a round round in the chamber. I just don't want it when I'm driving around/walking/shopping with my iwb holster.

Yeah but in case you do need to leave quickly with your truck, your life ain't gonna depend on it, and it's not gonna happen all in less than 2 seconds. Accidents happen all the time and usually to those that say that could never happen to me The reason why the Isralies train with an empty chamber is an extra level of safety and the momentary pause racking a shell into the chamber gives you an extra split second of intent to decide if you really have to use deadly force or not It's also because in the Early Days of the IDF the recruit's we're not always familiar with the many different types of weapons, particularly the numerous side arms that they had available to them
Israeli’s don’t even do the “Israeli carry” anymore. They used to do it when they had dozens of different handguns and not all of them were drop safe and they couldn’t standardize training for each pistol. Now they all use Glocks and CZ clones and carry with a round in the chamber

Tony rinaldo, yup! Excellent point. When I first started carrying (Sig P938) I carried hammer cocked, thumb safety on, but on an empty chamber. Eventually I got confident that the hammer wouldn’t fall accidentally so now I wouldn’t think of not carrying hot but for some people it takes time to get to that level.
8 years of carrying with one in the chamber and I've never had an incident.... not even close. The most important thing that I did when I first purchased my CPL weapon was to field strip it over and over until I could do it blindfolded. Then I trained with drawing my weapon from a holster repeatedly from different positions. Then I began to train with live ammunition from varying positions. If you're going to carry a weapon, you must know the exact capabilities of yourself and your weapon, at all times.
Yes! I personally like the ELMS G-Sight dry firing system for exactly that reason. To learn how the trigger feels and the draw. I've also improved on my accuracy and grouping. That has helped me when practicing with live rounds. I'm a 35 year old woman and have fired many types of guns over the years. But I only just now purchased my own gun last year. Field stripping it was the first thing I did as well. Then practicing my dry fire with the G-Sight, draw from holster, and then range training with it. I just purchased my 2nd, and did the same with that. I'm glad you've never had an encounter. But you never know. I explained to my Gramps that a gun is like a condom. It's best to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
@@ryananthony7115 define old ammo. When I was in kuwait we were issued ammo that was manufactured for the vietnam war and it worked perfectly fine. Ammo is not like a slab of bacon or something that goes bad, if you keep it dry and in a moderate climate it could easily last 50+ years and does.

If soemone comes up behind you and stabs you, is it because your headphones were on and your eyes were closed? Survival in a deadly force situation depends on a hiearchy of skills. First, situational awareness. The best-trained and equipped ninja who has his head down staring at a UA-cam video with his headphones is defenseless. Second, knowledge of tactics... do you know what to do, and what not to do? Third, skill with the weapon(s) at hand... can you actually use your weapon? Fourth, the choice of weapon... a skilled Escrima practitioner with a 2" knife who gets within contact distance will disembowel a casual concealed-carry person before they can deploy their handgun. Focus on all of these things, while acknowledging that we don't carry concealed because we know we'll need it, we carry just in case we might need it. The fastest draw is to have the gun in your hand just before you actually need it, but you can't run around with a gun in your hand so you have to be situationally aware and understand good tactics. And finally, the less you have to do under stress, the better. Much easier to draw and fire than to draw, rack, and fire. If you're worried about a gun with an active safety, like a 1911, then either get training and practice until you're not worried, or carry a Glock or Sig or Beretta, or a revolver.
You would be surprised. My taekwondo training required us to be sitting in a chair and performing a jump round kick to a practice gun hammer could strike.
Great video, thanks. Oddly, your mall shooter scenario has since unfolded. IDK if he had one in the chamber, but shots were fired at others first. And given the 40 yard through a food court distance that the CCW owner had to shoot and lack of any bystanders hit, I’m guessing the crowd had indeed parted. Violence can certainly blindside; but one may have a moment, too. You hit the nail on the head, however, it comes down to knowing one’s self. If you’re comfortable carrying but not comfortable cocked and locked, you’re still an asset to the rest of us. I’d rather be in that mall with CCW carriers who don’t have one in the chamber than with no good citizens who are carrying, any day.
Plus he took that guy down in one shot. I saw a video taken from the exact angle the citizen was standing and his view of where the shooter was. I consider myself a decent shooter but this guy was dead on target, literally, in a chaotic, stressful situation and took care of business. Even the cop in the video describing the situation was impressed with the good guy's skill. And by the way, I've been to that mall. Luckily I didn't have to shoot anyone.

If you've come this far without being instantly killed. Odds are that you are more likely to have an accidental discharge handling a chambered gun several times every day than being killed instantly, even with training. And if so, what difference would carrying chambered do? It would still be like trying to put on a seatbelt the moment before you crash. Use situational awareness training in addition to firearms training.

I've always carried (concealed) with a round chambered. When I started carrying my father taught me with, and I carried, his Colt 1911 for 2 years. Not gonna lie, I was nervous at first, but the more I trained with that weapon, the more comfortable I was with it. After 3 or 4 months, it was a non-issue. When I purchased MY first side arm for conceal carry, I looked at and shot a dozen or so weapons before I decided on the Springfield XDS in 9mm. I have never been concerned about carrying with a chambered round. Personal preference, I guess, but I carry and train to be prepared for any situation. I don't have to think about my weapon. I personally carry condition 1. As a retired U.S. Marine I feel that I served to do my part in helping the American people have the freedom to make their own decisions. If you feel comfortable carrying condition 3, DO IT. Do whatever makes you feel safe and comfortable. Wether you are carrying a firearm, riding a motorcycle, etc, we all accept some level of risk. YOU have to determine what level you are willing to accept. Be safe out there guys!
110%. Even carrying C4 would be better than not carrying at all. Carrying a 5-shot snub nose is better than _not_ carrying a 1911 because it's too bulky and makes your pants sag. Carrying single action black powder cap & ball would be better than not carrying a semi-auto because of local regulations or availability. Carrying a "big stick" is better than nothing at all. And having a first aid kit is more likely to come in handy than any weapon. It's good to gain knowledge, training, and comfort, but don't let those stand in the way of doing what you can do.
Agree completely. I understand full well if I am in a situation if I have to be a quick draw to live I am toast. I think in that case my chances of survival are slim anyway even getting it out of concealed carry fast enough even if it was C&L. It's simply safer for myself and family that way. More chances to hurt yoursrelf or others compared to odds of ever having to use one any way. That's my opinion and what my CC instructor said was method.
True, activity train each week and hit a range helps 100%. The army we aren't allowed to carry chambered. In boot camp at night in the Fort Benning fox holes. We had during supper time break had 10-20 accidental discharges going off left and right of me. Someone would get a meal, sit down, and boom. We had blanks with a blank adapter on! Texas two accidents from open carry from wounded warrior program get together that ended that outing and program event. In both incidents, they lost their foot. One mile down my road apartment, the guy had glock the same way kill his neighbor taking his holster off. A shot through a wall hit a dude in the head. All you chambered guys doing more than military or John wick, should know. Can end up in jail, is so comfortable chambered worth living. I don't do wheelies on the highway, but all guts I know who do also carry with a chambered round. Condition 3 is okay if you are trained to know what happening around you, condition 1 is for red zones only. I will carry from condition 3 to 1 depending on my environment and situation. 99% it's always condition 3 due to my military training. Glock 19 is in condition 3 and my 1911 is in condition 2. Because I have seen highly skilled shooters with more training than thousands of hours (special forces or swat) have had a negligent discharge. My prior marine Sgt from the Army in Iraq shot his foot in condition 1 after eating his meal standing up. While on patrol in a red zone he was in condition zero without knowing it. While by regs needed to be in condition one. Condition zero is a glock usually and is what this video wants is sad. Most popular position to be in today, with a nearly huge increase in accidental discharges leading to strict gun laws. Can't stress that if you need a round in the chamber, act that fast. You don't know your environment and are carelessly firing your life away perhaps into second-degree manslaughter. Deadly force is the last decision made while using force. Takes six to ten seconds to establish what's happening to you or a loved one. The only ones that should be on condition zero are security forces or the police. If you put yourself into that situation, into a condition one, probably don't have common sense. The army doesn't do it, marines can't, the Navy can't, and the police can. Because orders are required to shoot back at the enemy by an officer or NCO orders only. Police put themselves by themselves into red zones each day and don't require a report to fire back and they have insurance and lawyers keeping them out of jail. If you can't take five steps back racking a round in one step. If you need condition zero, you're 99% don't have the draw. Criminal or enemy has you at their advantage anyways. 90% of the time, they will do it in a crowd with people behind them. Go John Wayne taking out the crowd behind them. Guess what 😦, live a rest life behind bars. Without ever touching a gun or rifle ever again. Unless you're an officer of the law. The enemy wants to draw on you first. Yes having one ready and just needing to pull the trigger is 100% ideal for when the moment comes, but for the 99.99999999999999% of the rest of the time, empty chamber makes my very forgetful brain feel better. Now there are times I have one ready, but most of the time I’m not in a place that needs that.

Great video! Thanks for posting. As with anything, there are, at least, 2 ways to look at things. I, 100%, agree with you. But when I first started carrying, many decades ago, it was all so new to me. I carried unchambered. With much practice, I became good at chambering upon un-holstering. That's great at the range or at the house with dummy rounds. I enjoyed the practice. But, range time and controlled environments are not the real world, and sometimes, you're not going to have both hands available. Then where are you? Kids, unloading a vehicle, fighting someone off who blindsides you, can make for some very unique situations. As I got better and more confident, I started carrying with a chambered weapon. I would not criticize anyone who doesn't follow that logic, but, for me, I would rather be at the ready, than caught off-guard with no way of defending myself or my loved ones. I applaud anyone who carries and exercises their 2nd Amendment rights. If you feel safer not having your sidearm locked and loaded, God love ya. Keep on doing what makes you feel safe and secure.
When i was in law enforcement, i would have said for sure always keep it loaded. Now that i am a husband and a father with a 4 year old i have to consider and calculate all potential possibilities. Statistically speaking, there is a greater possibility of my son somehow getting his hands on my weapon and pulling the trigger, than being is a wyatt earp style quick draw shootout with a bad guy. The point is that you can still defend your family while mitigating risk of mishandling. The point is to be aware and to practice whatever system works best for you

I've never carried in my life, but I've always tried to avoid high risk situations. When strangers approach me, especially after dark, at 15FT away I tell them to stop and then ask what they want. Now, that I have a job as an insurance adjuster and that's going to put me in certain areas (including other states) that may be unsafe. I'm months away, so I'm going through preparations. The legal issues actually concern me more than the need for a weapon. Ideally, I just want to have one in the car for a possible emergency. I don't feel it always necessary to have it on my person. With law enforcement, having it in plain view seems to be more dangerous because of the nervousness it can create. I at least want to be able to have a chance to say that I'm carrying.The laws feel like a minefield. Do I have to get a license in every state that I go to or is there a more general protocol that I can follow? It seems that there should be a national license available to cover my type of situation.
poseidon3032 actually you can not get a license to carry in any other state than where you live. Some neighboring states recognize eachothers carry laws. Also, There are many states that consider your car an extension of your home and let you carry in your car without a carry permit. As for law enforcement is concerned, if you get pulled over, keep your hands on the steering wheel and the 1st thing you tell the officer is that you have a weapon and where it is. He may ask you ro step out or tell you to keep it right there, either way he will appreciate it. There is alot to learn but the most important thing you can learn is how to shoot well.
Y'all are gonna find this funny, but here's how I got over my reluctantance of carrying with a round in the chamber: Even after some training, I still felt a little weird about it. I carry one of a couple of Canik 9mms, or a RIA Ultra 1911. One day, I decided to start carrying all of my guns racked and ready to fire (cocked and locked on the 1911), but without a round in the pipe. This way, I felt I was giving myself adequate proof that guns don't simply go off mysteriously, without the proper shooting procedure being applied beforehand. If anything were to happen, I'd simply get a "click" rather than a "bang". I walked around like this for two weeks, actually trying to get the thing to "click" by simply going about my everyday routine, but also arrantly allowing my sidearm to bump into things, and basically doing everything wrong. You know what happened? Nothing. I never got a click. As a last-ditch effort to make the guns do the wrong thing, I actually took naps wearing every one of them individually (without magazines this time), just to see if that would do it. Nope. Turns out, guns are pretty darned safe. I now carry with a round in the chamber religiously, never giving it a second thought. Go ahead and roast me, but it really worked for me.

I used to carry empty, thinking "If I don't have half a second to chamber a round, I'm really in trouble." Then I watched a bunch of actual gunfights on the Active Self Protection channel. I realized how fast these things go down, and that it's not half seconds which decide gunfights. It's tenths of seconds. When the attack starts, you definitely are really in trouble. Needless to say, I carry hot now.
1. I live in a European country where neither I nor any of my friends and family ever were in a situation which requires you to have a gun to protect yourself, maybe there are some bad cities and neighbourhoods in the US but for the most part I would assume that it is not a lot more dangerous than Europe. 2. As you said carrying a fully loaded gun takes way more situational awareness and training, in my point of view this is the part where it becomes work, like always making sure nothing happens with your gun, being on edge, checking your surroundings always scanning for potential threats. That is basically the same a police officer does and they get paid to do it, as it is work. Now why would I spend my Saturday afternoon or any other day when I have some leisure time, being all paranoid about potential danger never relaxing, when I can also just live my life instead as mentioned in 1. ? 3. Now lets assume I see a realistic chance that I would get into some sort of fight where I would need to carry in order to defend myself or others, over 90% of the time when the other guy would get the drop on me before I have chambered my gun, I dare to say they would have also got me on the draw. This ain't the wild west, if you are focused by the attacker you want get out of sight preferably behind cover or if possible you want to deescalate, drawing when you are already being focused might very well get you killed. And if you are not in focus of the attacker or you just escaped it, you have time to draw and chamber the gun. Bottom line of what I am saying, I don't see the advantage of a chambered gun as significant enough, that I would prioritize it over they peace of mind I have in regards to safety when the chamber is empty. Like I see the chance of a hostile encounter where I would need a gun rather slim and of those potential situations there is such a small fraction of scenarios where the split seconds saved by not having to chamber a round, really matter. But I will give you that, if you assume that something is going happen and you want to be prepared as good as possible, carrying fully loaded is the way to go. The reasons above are just my reasons why I wouldn't want to do it.
Bad things happen to good people every day regardless of where you live. I know 3 women that have been molested, 3 people that have died in accidents, one person I went to school with was killed by someone else, my dad was held up at gunpoint in a parking lot in daylight by an acquaintance set on killing him, and there's been a recent murder in my town. Having the mindset that "just because it hasn't happened to me or someone I know yet means it won't ever happen" just means that if it does, you'll be entirely unprepared because you can't even fathom the possibility or take any precautions. It's the unprepared that these things happen to, which are tragically the most innocent people, like your high school kids, college students, newlywed couples, and grandparents. It doesn't take much life experience or research to learn that we inhabit a planet with places, people and animals that would sooner kill you than look at you, regardless of where you live. Now I'm in the semi-rural southern US. I've chosen to live in a place now where I can take my fate into my own hands, backed up by my friends from similar walks of life, and I suggest everyone else does too. It’s actually a cool thing you can do. If someone is standing 21 feet away and starts running (21 foot rule) your odds of getting shots on target before it reaches you increase exponentially. I’ve seen live fire demonstrations of this with moving targets. Now you can argue the validity of this, but at that distance, it is reasonable to say you wouldn’t notice the attacker until they start running. You carry how you want, but it is a fact that carrying chambered results in a faster reaction time and is therefore better for a response to an attack. If you feel uncomfortable with a loaded chamber, fine. Just know that with a good holster, the gun is not going to go off.
Thats what im saying, is that you shouldn't be trying to quickdraw people, if you are in a situation where you have been caught in a dangerous situation with your weapon in its holster, and your survival depends on less than a second reaction times, you're dead already.

@@juanmeza958 if multiple people in an area are open carrying, then the chances of crime drop exponentially as there is a threat that cannot be beaten alone or even with multiple people unless there is perfect coordination. If a single person is, it would make them a target sure, but for many criminals, they would just wait until they leave as some don’t want to knowingly throw their life away. Personally, I go concealed all day. More for the people around me than potential attackers honestly, because In my state, people have little experience with firearms and I don’t feel like explaining to the cops what is happening every time I got shopping. There are benefits to both methods, and it’s up to the individual to pick what they value more. To sum it up simply: Open: puts a target on you, but crime is less likely to happen Concealed: Nothing preventing someone from committing a crime, but you are not more of a target and have element of surprise.

Holy moly! So many responses here in favor of empty chamber carry. I can't believe this. You guys know action usually beats reaction right? I personally think those that carry empty chambered should do so if they don't feel safe handling their pistol. I don't know, I was police so that's where I come from. That's definitely a no-no in the police profession. If anyone says they were cops and were told to carry unchambered, that's plain assery.
When it comes to firearms, it isn't to each is their own. There is a proper way to do it. Always carry a round in the chamber. If you are not comfortable then train until you are.
Some things are merely a matter of personal opinion. This is not. 1) Anything that slows you down in a deadly defensive encounter increases your chance of not surviving that encounter. One's personal opinion might get one dead. 2) I have several pistols that come out of the safe for cleaning and range trips. That's it. I don't trust them as defensive weapons. If you don't trust your gun enough to carry it and to carry it the way it was designed to be carried, DON'T CARRY IT.
I've been in a number of self defense situations as a delivery driver, I was a security guard for about 3 years, and now I'm working my way to becoming a police officer. All I can say is that if somebody attacks you so fast that you didn't even have time to rack a round into the chamber, you were gonna get got anyway.
Was scrolling looking for this. If you dont have enough time to charge a round you were goanna be shot anyway because we aint john wick out here. Being in the military we only lock and load if the weapon is goanna be in your hand at the low ready because some weapons just take a bump to release the bolt or pin. I have seen alot of accidental discharges and people lose rank or their career for it.
My thought exactly. And honestly most people that carry with one in the pipe probably don’t regularly practice drawing and shooting their weapon at the range. I guarantee I can draw, cock, and accurately shoot my pistol faster than most guys can draw and shoot.
I fire a round per step while walking, right through my holster..that way if I need it I'm already firing. Or I carry it pointed straight ahead with my finger on the trigger because who has time to pull from a holster.
@Tom Barker I carry an XD-9 that doesn't have a safety switch or a hammer. I take comfort in the fact that I can walk around with my weapon (that I can rack in half a second) unlike weapons that do have a safety and a hammer and are carried in "Condition One" and not have to worry about blowing my own balls off because of some freak incident.

You are 100% more likely to accidently fire a round off because one is in the chamber, than you EVER are of actually needing to use your weapon quick enough to need a round already chambered. This is fact I was in the Army, deployed to the front lines of Afghanistan. Our soldiers were constantly firing rounds due to accidental discharge. If the most trained people do it, so will you (whoever is reading this).

I don't know why anyone would trust a firearm as a concealed carry that has to be carried cocked to be deployed quickly. Get an SA/DA pistol, they were expressly made to be safe in everyday carry while still being quick to deploy.

This argument can go on forever. You will always have people defending one position or the other. I used to carry with an empty chamber and 2 years ago I had the luck of being in a group of people who got held up by 2men with pistols. While they began taking wallets and other things of value I waited trying not to draw attention to myself and to what I was doing trying to figure out how to rack my slide without them noticing. The only problem though was the man getting our wallets was paying attention mostly to that task, however his buddy stood back and just stared at us with the constant reminder not to move. At one point the grab man even gave his accomplice his pistol so he could get our stuff quicker. There were several golden opportunities to draw and take him out when he would follow his buddy to put more fear into some stubborn person. Had I been carrying with a bullet on top, I have no doubt I could have ended that threat very quickly. I have been shooting since I was 5 years old, from my daisy red ryder, my first 22 and so on including 20 years in the military. After that incident I now carry with one in the chamber. As bad luck would have it I was given a chance to redeem myself 3 months ago to the date. While waiting in line at this store kind of in the middle of no where In New Mexico to purchase a nice cold Dr. Pepper someone comes in with a gun and demanding money and what not waiving a pistol all over. I waited for an opportunity only this time I had a bullet chambered and ready to go. I was actually hoping that this man get what he came in for, which sempt to be the cash register money and leave. However he grew irrate when there wasn't much money in there and proceeded to fire a round into the ceiling and then two into the floor. He then smashed the cashier's face with his pistol smacking her several times until blood was pooring out of her nose which he had broken. The store which is a mom and pop store been out there on the side of I-25 sits across from Starvation Peak a mountain that is a historic landmark. Now seeing all this blood and the old cashier (the owner) bleeding all over everyone was shaken and as he shouted he was going to kill everyone if she didn't produce more money which they really don't make that much money there anyway, he started demanding the customers wallets and purses shouting, the cash, the cash mother#$#@!@$. I chose my time, drew my pistol slowly acting as if I were getting my wallet. I knew I just had to get it out and it was ready to fire. If I had to chamber a round, he would have seen for sure and it would have gone bad for us and I knew it. I waited for my chance to launch my counter attack. His attention shifted towards another elderly woman who was so petrified with fear could not move. He screamed at her letting go of the cashier and proceeded to strike her in the face with his free hand. It happened quickly as I took a few small steps to get in a position in front of a man who I had been behind, I had used him for concealment, once my line of sight was clear I fired twice striking him both times in the chest. He immediately fell and I quickly moved in on him ready to shoot him again. He had dropped his pistol and I grabbed it. I remember him groining and when he tried to breathe I remember hearing crackling sounds. My loads were 45 Hornady Critical Defence and not to suprisingly to me he had been carrying a Glock 17 loaded to the max, with one in the chamber guys, his ammo, Hornady Critical Defence rounds in 9mm. This man had a warrant in Alabama for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, strong armed robbery, felon in possession with a stolen firearm, and on and on. Anyway I learned from these two situatons. I now carry with one in the chamber ready to go. I learned that sometimes in a close up situation, much easier to wait for your opportunity and know your ready to go. These Bastards allways have the drop on you and sometimes you have to wait for your turn. Remember though, in the end go with whats best for you. My life revolves around firearms and I've been in actual combat so my skill level is higher than the average Joe. My training automatically kicked in. I encourage if you carry a firearm, train, train, train, as often as you can. I know it's time consuming and ammunition can get expensive, but the more training you got under your belt, the better it will serve you if you should, God forbid, ever find yourself in a life or death situation. If you do, remember it happends fast so situational awareness is very important. The bad person, or persons will have the element of surprise more often than not. Remember to wait your turn and never, never, draw your firearm on a drawn gun, you will get shot. Compliance doesn't guarantee you won't be harmed. There are some sick evil people out there who's intentions and motovations may not be that they just want your money and then run. Unfortunately some are targetting you or a loved one. Women need to be extra careful with all these rapists and keep an extra eye out for your children and all children, so many damn pedophiles are out there too. Last, if you make that decision that your going to fight, go at it with everything you got, 110%, anything goes, bite, scratch, tear their eyes out, their balls, whatever to give yourself the best chance that you will survive. So for those of us that carry, I say in the end you do what you are most comfortable with. Bullet cocked and locked in the chamber ready to go, or if you prefer practice on racking that slide in all kinds of potential situations so you can be as quick as possible when it's go time. Hopefully you never will find yourself in any of these situations. I hope my experiences have helped some of you to decide. Remember no one wants to take another persons life, but if it's between you or them, you do what you have to so you can go home to your loved ones. I agree with most of what you said except for a few ideas. In all my years as a trainer with firearms, I have found that many people that are intimidated by guns or are apprehensive about carrying one have to be treated a bit differently when first introduced to daily carry. You can't simply demand they carry a particular way just because it's how you carry it or because it's quicker to draw. That will only make them want to not carry one at all. That's the opposite of what you're trying to do. You also have to remember that a newbie to guns is not going to try to out draw anyone anyway, so let's put that aside for now. Let's just get them comfortable with carrying a gun. Let's teach them it's capabilities and limitations. With familiarity comes trust. People have to know their guns and how they function before they can trust them. No matter how much you try to show them safeties work, they will not trust them until they are ready to. Instead let's train them to load, shoot and unload their guns. Throw in some marksmanship just to make it fun. Stress safety all the time. It will not take long before they begin to feel they know their gun and begin to develop a trust in it's capabilities and limitations. Then the willingness to carry a loaded gun will follow. If you know someone who still carries an unloaded gun even after years of carrying, then they still don't trust their gun because of lack of training. I'm not talking about shooting cans in the backyard, but real training. Real training develops trust. Until then, they're just trigger pullers. Also on another point. You say there's no difference between a hammer forward guy and the "I'll rack it later" guy. There's actually a very big difference. I can arm the hammer on a single action only pistol or revolver with one hand. It's been done that way for many, many decades. I would need two hands to rack a semi-auto. (yeah, yeah, I know. Some guns are designed to rack with one hand...blah. blah. blah....whatever.....I've yet to see anyone ever do that on a range while TRAINING.) The one handed operation is very doable in comparison to the "hold on a sec...lemme load my gun" scenario. Those two are not just alike or even similar.

I agree with most of what you said, except a newbie should NOT be starting out with a semiauto. There's nothing wrong with the much more reliable DA revolver for beginners. There are no FTFs or FTEs with a revolver, no safeties to think about, no magazines to go bad, and they will handle just about any load and bullet configuration you can put in the chamber. You also cannot put a round backwards in a revolver's chamber like newbies try with semiauto magazines. It's a shame that some people think a revolver is obsolete. They can be dead wrong.
I don't go anywhere unless absolutely necessary. Like the grocery store twice a month. The only other places I've gone in the last month is the gun store and my private range. I got used to staying at home during 2020 and I'm fine with that. Just have to restock food every now and then. Lost my trust and everybody I've known out here from ripping me off. So Nobody invites me to go shooting off-roading or anything with them anymore. After I taught everyone how to shoot and reload that was in our group. Which is fine I'm very happy being alone I discovered. Less frustration.

I've been carrying everyday for over a year. I'm still hesitate to carry locked & loaded. My thought is, if an attacker statically uses ambush as there tactics. Locked & loaded really won't up your chances. Just because your carrying doesn't mean you can even draw your pistol. I prefer to use all my instincts & situation awareness to lesson any threat Or situation. I believe our brain is our greatest primary weapon & our sidearm is secondary. In my 56 years of life, i've never been drawn on, nor needed to draw. Very much hoping i continue to bat a 1000. The 2nd amendment allows either option & choice. Do what makes you comfortable. I carried for awhile with an empty chamber when I was new to carrying everyday until I felt comfortable that I wouldn't have a neglegent discharge. I say carry however you feel safe doing so.
I'd disagree. I don't have an issue with carrying one in the chamber as a rule. It's generally safe. But first off...if you were in an active shooter scenario like he described it would literally be the opposite of what he said. If you are 1 of 200 people in his line of sight, most likely you'd have time to react. You're first move should be to get to cover in that scenario anyways. If you had someone with a weapon out and your first reaction was to draw you're already dead. Violence rarely happens out of nowhere. In most scenarios there is always a buildup. I don't know who this guy is but he's simply defending his personal opinion. That's it. If you needed to pull the weapon and fire in a fraction of a second, you're probably already missed multiple signs.
There is no cover at a supermarket you're going to hide behind a potato chips and lose your life. Don't tell me the freezers because you can't get behind them 90% of the time and when it breaks out you better know every inch of that supermarket there are too many places and too many scenarios where an unchambered weapon is going to cost you, either your life or someone you're trying to protect. And I've only been carrying for 50+ years. My credentials include starting with national match competition long before I was 13 years old. As I got older and got into ipsc in other types of shooting. I'm not going to go into my work overseas. Yes people have discharges negligent mostly. I have yet to have one of those and I hope it never happens to me but I would never support the idea of carrying an empty weapon because you fear a negligent or accidental discharge. Train train and train again. I train nearly daily I live on a piece of property where I have that luxury. I've trained with SRT and other. The point of trying to make is if you're responsible if you're careful if you keep your weapon and top shape and negligent discharge is something that may never happen. Again it's your responsibility to keep your weapon in the top functioning shape as well as yourself. I've carried every day for more than a half century there is no time off. And when I'm 80 years old I probably still will be carrying one of the things that I did the most is train people out of a passion to keep firearms safe and keep people safe. the well-oiled machine is not only the weapon it's also the person behind it. I carry 1911 almost exclusively for the last half century I have carried a Glock 21 due to contractual obligations. For the most part I carry two 1911s, and on some occasion I carry a revolver usually my 357 Magnum 2 and 5/8 in model 19 with some fairly high penetrating rounds for the most obvious of reasons. I carry an SBR in the truck with me. None of these ever separate a negligent or accidental discharge. It's your choice when I have to go to condition red I don't want to be racking a slide or fumbling with a hammer which can create a negligent discharge in itself.
So say you get mugged and don’t have both your hands..can you rack the slide. If you don’t trust your holster and your safeties you have to realize you’re taking on way more risk.
This is why I carry a snubnose revolver don’t have to worry about no dam slide or even cocking a hammer I pull it out it’s ready to shoot it’s perfectly safe to carry I’ve carried my 357/38 special snub nose for over 10 years never had an issue with it always loaded and ready to defend me

I carry a glock 19 unchambered, and there's nothing anyone will ever say to convince me otherwise. The likelihood of me ever needing to discharge my firearm in the direction of any human being is so infintesimally small that it's simply not worth the risk of having a weapon chambered on my person.
You do realize that a glock 19 has 3 safties built into it. You sound like you don't understand your firearm that well. The entire design of the gun is based on carrying it loaded. Do what you're comfortable with. If you want to leave it in drawers and gloveboxes without one in it that makes sense, but on your person unloaded. Like keeping your car on empty becuase you think it's going to expoled at any moment. meanwhile the risks of running out of gas and getting stranded or causing an accident or needing to go to sketchy gas stations goes way up along with a million other risks. I don't chamber mine because I have a leather holster and I have two young kids living in my house with me. It's just safer, especially cuz Glocks have no safety features

Its illegal to have one in the chamber in most states without a CFP. This guy is going to get people in trouble. And seriously, how long does it take to rack the slide? If you don't have time to rack the slide, I don't think drawing your side arm would be the best option as you are probably hand to hand on the ground. Knives are more effective in that situation.
I appendix carry, and have trained to draw/charge (since the hand is right there pulling the shirt up), I’ve got the draw/charge, and fire down to 1.5 seconds. The charging literally happens on the push out for aim. It’s a single movement. I bet I could draw, fire 3 rounds, clear and holster before this dude could find his pistol on his hip.

@@thebeesknees745 same, I carry knives, not just one, and it doesn't hurt to have a 2-4 inch knife or a slightly longer blade above 4 inch I'm an amateur gun owner but I also hope to take EMT classes because not everyone naturally knows how to dress wounds properly. I also hope to gain some knowledge with takedowns or wrestling or pins, because I also carry handcuffs with me. You never know when you might need to cuff someone who's being crazy/rowdy or needs to be captured for the police or safety of the people near you. Least of all, your own safety. I hate how duty holsters are only for people who 'serve in duty'. Aliengear needs to offer level 3 retention duty holsters for other gun models that aren't full size guns. I hate the weird exclusivity for certain items in the gun world. Anyways, it doesn't take much to rack a slide and one should always find cover instead of haphazardly engaging a gunman or whatever enemy is around, to rack the slide and load the gun. Learning to have 'some' close combat skills would be preferable, and wear a knife/sheath/holster horizontal to your belt in front of your belly to stab the person who you may be grappling/pushing away when they're attacking and facing you directly. I have muscle fatigue issues due to many possible reasons, so I can only rely on being able to do certain things offensively/defensively in a swift manner akin to an assassin, and that's my style anyways.
@@Desertpunk1986 unfortunately not all indoor ranges allow people to practice fast draws and shooting, but what I do as an amateur gun shooter is practice lowering my gun down, then pulling it back up to point/aim and shoot within 1-3 seconds upon raising the gun and train to line up sights quickly. Some people have terrible eye vision like myself so I have to put more effort into that practice.

If you want to be even more effective, carry a completely unloaded gun. Then when the guy grabs your gun, you'd have even more time to take the gun back because it doesn't matter how many times he racks the slide.

I was British military I carried browning hipower, sa80, slr and sterling smg during my career, including in Iraq, Kosovo, NI and Afghan and we were under strict rules never to carry a round in the chamber. The only time to put a round in the chamber was when you were going to use it. My trade carried live weapons nearly everyday and despite handling those weapons and getting tested on weapon handling every 3 months we still had folks having what we called negligent discharges, despite loading and unloading being supervised . Mistakes happen after 12 hour night shift
I was in British Army too for just shy of 14 yrs 1pwo/1yorks from 98 to 2011. 2 tours of N.I, tour Bosnia, 1 tour sierra leone in 2000. Currently 9 yrs active in US Army 1 tour of Afghanistan, both infantry. I carry everyday in civilians with my personal side arm IWI Jericho which I carry at ted status ie 1 in the chamber. It all comes down to skill set of the individual and ensuring they know their wpn inside and out correctly. I also own an IWI Tavor X95 5.56 it's a sweet thing.
I don't carry one in the chamber, and I'm happy with that. I totally get it if someone does, and that's fine. More training probably would make me more comfortable with one in the pipe, sure. But I do train my fitness (something a lot of the gun/carry community doesn't do, let's admit it) and I train something that I find extremely underrated: charisma. Worked as a paramedic for a few years in a very sketchy city just outside of Detroit, and got in some hairy situations. Not allowed to carry, didn't supply vests. Being able to talk someone down is a grossly underutilized skill in this community. I value my charisma a thousand times more than I value a round in the chamber. Honestly, I 100% disagree with the "violence happens fast" argument. There's (often, not always) a long, heated build-up to a shootout, and if you can't notice that, you've got other problems. Will not having one in the chamber get me killed? It could, sure. But like I said, I don't carry one in the chamber, and I'm happy with that.

Two of them where they racked the slide and misfired and another where a semi auto so gets stuck in full auto while shooting. I keep a pistol in EACH hand, loaded, cocked, safety off, one in the chamber, finger on the trigger and pointed straight out, arms parallel to the ground. I also rotate slowly 360 degrees as I walk. The only problem I have experienced is that I have to stop frequently to rest; a small price I think to stay safe.
This is the kind of comment that repulses me. If you're not going to train by carrying buckets of water parallel to the ground so that you never get tired...why are you evening carrying bro?! Obviously, you have to attach the pistols TO the buckets so that you're not unarmed but if you're not going 100% then just go home.
It is FAR more likely that one of my kids will accidentally fuck with it while im holding them than it is for me to ever be in a situation where I need to fire it. An empty chamber is one extra safety precaution when you are wrangling small children alone in say... A busy grocery store. Small kids make carrying a LOT more difficult and risky.
Personally, I'd go with a conceal carry with an empty chamber. If havoc breaks out in a civilian setting, concealed carry means you likely won't be a priority target and you'll find time to set yourself up for the appropriate defense.

It's a trade-off . . . likelihood of rapid development threat vs likelihood of an accidental discharge. Not as easy of a question as some want to believe.
Statistically, you're far more likely to shoot yourself or have an accidental discharge than be shot, at least in most places. Unless you live in a really bad neighborhood, it's probably not going to be beneficial to carry with a round chambered. Doubly so if you don't have a good holster or if you feel uncomfortable with it chambered. Go with whatever makes you comfortable, and train with it that way. The last thing you want to do is ruin your life because of an accidental discharge that lands you with a conviction, all because you were being extra careful planning for a situation that is very, very unlikely to ever occur.

In Afghanistan I carried a Berretta and an M4. I chambered rounds when outside the wall but on post I did not. In everyday life accidents are way more common than split-second violence. You can always adjust your posture if the situation dictates, but to just walk around hot all the time....unnecessary in my opinion.
As someone who deployed to Iraq with the 101st Airborne and carried an M4 with a round in the chamber I dont fault anyone for not or think any less of them. They put a discharge barrel just inside the front gate of every compound to clear your weapon into as you enter a secure area so as to avoid accidental discharges. I've seen men of every rank and background I've seen hard core infantry for life types I've seen em all check to ensure their weapon is safe and accidentally discharge into the barrel. I'm talking guys who have done it every day sometime several times a day for months have slipped up and had an accidental discharge. So yea you can think you're the most professional bad ass well trained firearms expert with more guns at home than a small army but that shit doesn't matter if the one time you dont have your mind where it should be cause your spouse or child is sick or was in a car accident and you go through your reflex moves to clear and safe your weapon and you miss a step and dont even realize it until your ears are ringing and hopefully you haven't put a hole in yourself or anyone else.

It's a negligent discharge if a firearm discharges when not intended.

To me the added layer of safety that a DA/SA trigger offers to carrying a firearm with a round in the chamber is what makes me confident and comfortable carrying daily. And while I support everyone carrying with a round in the chamber for the same reasons is many I also believe if someone doubts their ability to carry that way without a negligent discharge they should still carry without a round in the chamber and train that way. I dont want any firearm death/injury stats going up because of ego or sense of obligation to carry a certain way.

It greatly decreases the situations you can defend yourself, and can result in even more danger for yourself and everyone around you. There is a reason than any expert says to keep a round in the chamber. The only reason you would want to carry without a round in the chamber is inexperience... so suggest they get experience rather than encouraging a bad method. If someone was only ok with carrying a pistol fully disassembled, would you say that is the wrong way from a tactical standpoint? We have to learn from those who have gone before us, and too many people have died because of a slow draw, and having to rack the slide makes you slower in every situation... and forget a surreptitious draw.

@Warren: Racking the slide ALWAYS slows down your draw. You will need more of a window to draw than you would with a round in the chamber.
Carrying your pistol in your hand is about the dumbest analogy I can think of. You would have to take into account having your hands free, other people's reactions to you, and being the first target. Having the fastest draw possible gives you the best odds at survival. Adding anything to it decreases the occasions you can safely draw.
I would like to hear ANY situation that carrying without a round in the chamber is better that doesn't have to do with experience or negligence.... ANY.

@Warren: Well as long as I have your assurance that a four second draw is fine... perhaps give your assurances to the man who died in the church shooting... he had a four second draw and took a chest full of buck shot. Had he had a three second draw, he would likely still be alive. So again. Why would you ever want to add time and movement to a draw? Your excuse seems to be in case of negligence...
So again, there aren't any situations that a fast/smooth draw won't work when a fast/rack draw will, but there are plenty the other way around. The industry standard is 2 seconds from concealed, but if you have to rack your slide and the other person doesn't, you lose. If the bad guy has a 2 second draw, and you have a two second draw but you also have to rack your slide, you have to pray for a bad shot. Why knowingly put yourself in that situation?
The chances of you ever having to pull your firearm is one in a million, but you still go to the range... why? Because you prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
There are plenty of ways to carry a firearm, but there are also right ways and wrong ways, bad ways and better ways. If you follow the firearm safety rules, you won't have any negligent discharges... so the only reason not to carry your pistol with one in the chamber is lack of experience or lack of confidence in your ability. Both can get you killed if you ever have to use your firearm.
Watch all of the videos available online of people having to use their firearm... count how many have time to rack their slide. Now count how many die or lose the battle to the first hit because their firearm wasn't ready.
There is a very good reason that you cannot find a firearms instructor who will suggest carrying your weapon without a round in the chamber...

I'm working my way back to carrying hot .I used to be all for carrying hot and used to call others idiots for not chambering . That is until I had a negligent discharge that thankfully didn't result in injury. It can happen to anyone . For those that say otherwise , I was in your shoes once. I agree, that’s why most military require a thumb safety on striker fire pistols. It’s just another layer of protection. It’s like having a seatbelt and an airbag instead of just one or the other.

Actually most cops couldn't hit ther own foot . They get about 20 hours of training, and never fire there guns again, thats why they have to mag dump to get a single hit. I've seen it a hundred times when I was swat.
I carry empty chamber for 2.5 years until I was comfortable with a round in the chamber, then I carry hot for almost 2 years. Last month, I had a negligent discharge, thankfully no one was hurt. Starting that day, I went back to empty chamber carry since the chances of a negligent discharge is significantly higher than one would ever need to draw to defend themselves.
I always deploy a flash bang any time I enter an uncleared location with my H&K 416 at low ready.

this is my thought, it's a risk analysis of your skill vs the likelihood of danger. if you are a cop or a soldier or a cashier at an inner city liquor store maybe you go hot, but cruising the walmart dairy when you have not been to the range in 15 months might not be the time to have one in the chamber.
Totally I agree. Concealed carry is about your safety and protecting it. There’s nothing wrong with going at your own pace. Could just one extra second save your life in that moment? Yes, but only if you are armed to begin with. Also there are handguns that are known to discharge without the trigger being pressed like the sig p320.

Here’s how I look at it. Could I draw and rack the slide before someone with similar speed and strength as myself could reach me from 10 meters? Hell no. I’m extremely fast on my feet, and so are most criminals. If I was about to attack someone, and even suspect that they could have a weapon, I’m hitting them from behind. Situational awareness beats all. Some have it, some will end up a victim for lack of it. The odds of ever having to shoot someone is slim for most people. Exactly, thinking is key. That's why I carry a big bore derringer, loaded with the most ridiculous rounds possible. I'm not trying to get into a gunfight. I just want to fire one or two rounds at the most likely attacker; one man with a knife. If they have a gun, and they're out of my effective range, I run. If I can't escape, I set up a counter-ambush. Simple plans work best.
I usually just walk around with my fists balled. Makes it hard to open doors, but you never know when violence will blindside you.
You can't risk that one second it takes to close your fist. Always vigilant.

I’m new to conceal carry and I don’t carry one in the chamber because I’m afraid of my error. However, you made really great points to the additional training needed, the time it takes to rack the slide, and real-time situation. I definitely rethink how I carry.

I'm the same way with my P365, but I realize the benefits of putting a round in the chamber. That's why I'm going to buy a DA/SA next, like the CZ P-01. That long, 16 lb initial trigger pull makes safe enough for me to carry with a round in the chamber.
I carried without one chambered for quite some time. I carry chambered now. I liked my ambidextrous safety, now I'm deleting it. After becoming comfortable, I trust me now. I know my gun a lot better. Changes come with experience. Also, my gun never leaves my side.

Having one in the chamber is completely useless: either they get the jump on you and you're already dead or you hear them coming and you'll have the 0.5 second it takes to get ready.

I agree that caring with a round in the chamber is being much more prepared then without, but it's better than not having any protection at all. I also believe that everyone should know their limitations and carry accordingly but should strive to improve them as well.
Yes. Carry what you are comfortable with. i don't usually carry but when I do, my vintage Colt snub nose 38 revolver has 6 loaded firing chambers, all ready to go at a moment's notice. No slide to rack or safety to disengage.

"Be prepared" has been my motto since serving in Vietnam (1st Inf. Div.), and I always carry one in the pipe, whether the firearm has a de-cocker or a manual safety, I'm 78 now and have never had an "accidental" discharge........... and have been packing for 48 years.
The point is to carry something reliable and well designed. Basically a tried and tested hammer gun.

In the Army they taught us a 1911 was to be carried with a round in the chamber and the weapon cocked and locked, that was 55 years ago and I still carry my 1911 cocked and locked today.

It's best to carry regardless of your methods. However, my belief is that you won't have an indecent if you follow safety rules when carrying one in the chamber. The biggest issue with not carrying in the chamber isn't time... It's that there's a significant chance the incident/adrenaline will leave you inducing a malfunction when racking the slide OR you don't have a hand free (because you might be pushing off an attacker).

This is a great topic. And I have a short to share about this particular incident that had happened to me and my family in the past. And note, this incident was based in the comfort of my own home. However before I get started on the story, ill add that I am an everyday carry person as well. Having that being said, this was December 23rd 2021 about 1:50am. My wife and I were sound asleep in our bedroom which is located at the back end of our house. She wakes up in confusion to the sound of 2 men conversing outside our front door, one of the men was talking rather loud and not trying to be stealthy at all where the other man was talking in a much softer tone. So, my wife suddenly wakes me up, says babe I think I hear someone out front trying to get into the house.. I instantly go into recon mode and grab my Smith and Wesson .40 cal off the night stand near me. Which I knew had a live round in the chamber followed by 15 rounds in the magazine. It was holstered from carrying it previously the day before, so I removed the holster and had it drawn, safety off. As I crawl out of bed and stealthily make my way into the hallway while in pitch black darkness, I can see the ambient light of my stove clock reflecting on the sliding glass door. The light suddenly blacks out, and it was at that point, I knew someone has made their way inside the house. I slowly step backwards back into the edge of our bedroom, explain to my wife that she needs to get down on the ground, crawl to the bathroom lock the door, keeps the lights off, and call the 911. So she starts to do so. I ease back out of the bedroom into that are hallway I was in before, and I hit my knees with my back to the wall, pistol drawn, and start to slowly move down the hallway toward the living room area. Our security system automatically locks the doors after 30 seconds at anytime between 10pm-5am so I now have the 2 guys trapped inside my house with me and my frantic wife. I remotely turn on our electric fireplace which spooks the guys and they turn for the front door not knowing they can't get out of the house. They quickly realize that they are stuck and I stand up out of nowhere right behind both of them with my 40 cal to one man's head instructing them to get on the ground and reminding them that they cannot exit the house without my code entry. So I get one guy on the ground and gunpoint, the other guy kicks me in the head while I was knelt down detaining the first guy. I get up discharge my firearm into the floor and tell him to get down on the ground once again. He does not comply and began fighting me once again, I discharged a second shot point blank into his hip because he was on top of me and I felt threatened for my life. He falls off of me, guy number one is still on the ground afraid to be shot at, so he's listening to instructions the entire time. I ask him what his intentions were for breaking into my home, he responded they were after the Christmas gifts and maybe some small electronics. I said to him he picked the wrong house to try that out at. Shortly the police arrived to my house, take full control of the situation, temporarily confiscated my firearm until the entire event was finished. Got everything on camera inside and outside the house. The police said I did the best thing I could do to protect my family and home. Returned my pistol to me, and arrested both the men. Bottom line is that you are right.. it happens so fast and sometimes you don't have the extra second available to rack a slide in the event of a violent emergency. I haven't had to use any of my firearms in that manor at all in my life until that day and haven't since, but at the time, the only thought that goes through my head was don't pull that trigger.. and did. It was the best decision I've ever made in the terms of line of duty. Be careful folks, and better yet, be prepared. You just never know what people will do.

Tony rinaldo, yup! Excellent point. When I first started carrying (Sig P938) I carried hammer cocked, thumb safety on, but on an empty chamber. Eventually I got confident that the hammer wouldn’t fall accidentally so now I wouldn’t think of not carrying hot but for some people it takes time to get to that level.
Know your equipment.
8 years of carrying with one in the chamber and I've never had an incident.... not even close. The most important thing that I did when I first purchased my CPL weapon was to field strip it over and over until I could do it blindfolded. Then I trained with drawing my weapon from a holster repeatedly from different positions. Then I began to train with live ammunition from varying positions. If you're going to carry a weapon, you must know the exact capabilities of yourself and your weapon, at all times.

Yes! I personally like the ELMS G-Sight dry firing system for exactly that reason. To learn how the trigger feels and the draw. I've also improved on my accuracy and grouping. That has helped me when practicing with live rounds. I'm a 35 year old woman and have fired many types of guns over the years. But I only just now purchased my own gun last year. Field stripping it was the first thing I did as well. Then practicing my dry fire with the G-Sight, draw from holster, and then range training with it. I just purchased my 2nd, and did the same with that. I'm glad you've never had an encounter. But you never know. I explained to my Gramps that a gun is like a condom. It's best to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Survival in a deadly force situation depends on a hiearchy of skills. First, situational awareness. The best-trained and equipped ninja who has his head down staring at a UA-cam video with his headphones is defenseless. Second, knowledge of tactics... do you know what to do, and what not to do? Third, skill with the weapon(s) at hand... can you actually use your weapon? Fourth, the choice of weapon... a skilled Escrima practitioner with a 2" knife who gets within contact distance will disembowel a casual concealed-carry person before they can deploy their handgun.
Focus on all of these things, while acknowledging that we don't carry concealed because we know we'll need it, we carry just in case we might need it. The fastest draw is to have the gun in your hand just before you actually need it, but you can't run around with a gun in your hand so you have to be situationally aware and understand good tactics. And finally, the less you have to do under stress, the better. Much easier to draw and fire than to draw, rack, and fire. If you're worried about a gun with an active safety, like a 1911, then either get training and practice until you're not worried, or carry a Glock or Sig or Beretta, or a revolver.
You would be surprised. My taekwondo training required us to be sitting in a chair and performing a jump round kick to a practice gun hammer could strike.

And given the 40 yard through a food court distance that the CCW owner had to shoot and lack of any bystanders hit, I’m guessing the crowd had indeed parted. Violence can certainly blindside; but one may have a moment, too. You hit the nail on the head, however, it comes down to knowing one’s self. If you’re comfortable carrying but not comfortable cocked and locked, you’re still an asset to the rest of us. I’d rather be in that mall with CCW carriers who don’t have one in the chamber than with no good citizens who are carrying, any day.
Plus he took that guy down in one shot. I saw a video taken from the exact angle the citizen was standing and his view of where the shooter was. I consider myself a decent shooter but this guy was dead on target, literally, in a chaotic, stressful situation and took care of business. Even the cop in the video describing the situation was impressed with the good guy's skill. And by the way, I've been to that mall. Luckily I didn't have to shoot anyone.

If you've come this far without being instantly killed. Odds are that you are more likely to have an accidental discharge handling a chambered gun several times every day than being killed instantly, even with training. And if so, what difference would carrying chambered do? It would still be like trying to put on a seatbelt the moment before you crash. Use situational awareness training in addition to firearms training.

I've always carried (concealed) with a round chambered. When I started carrying my father taught me with, and I carried, his Colt 1911 for 2 years. Not gonna lie, I was nervous at first, but the more I trained with that weapon, the more comfortable I was with it. After 3 or 4 months, it was a non-issue. When I purchased MY first side arm for conceal carry, I looked at and shot a dozen or so weapons before I decided on the Springfield XDS in 9mm. I have never been concerned about carrying with a chambered round.
Personal preference, I guess, but I carry and train to be prepared for any situation.
I don't have to think about my weapon. I know it's there and ready as soon as I need it!

I personally carry condition 1. As a retired U.S. Marine I feel that I served to do my part in helping the American people have the freedom to make their own decisions. If you feel comfortable carrying condition 3, DO IT. Do whatever makes you feel safe and comfortable. Wether you are carrying a firearm, riding a motorcycle, etc, we all accept some level of risk. YOU have to determine what level you are willing to accept. Be safe out there guys!
110%. Even carrying C4 would be better than not carrying at all. Carrying a 5-shot snub nose is better than _not_ carrying a 1911 because it's too bulky and makes your pants sag. Carrying single action black powder cap & ball would be better than not carrying a semi-auto because of local regulations or availability. Carrying a "big stick" is better than nothing at all. And having a first aid kit is more likely to come in handy than any weapon. It's good to gain knowledge, training, and comfort, but don't let those stand in the way of doing what you can do.
Agree completely. I understand full well if I am in a situation if I have to be a quick draw to live I am toast. I think in that case my chances of survival are slim anyway even getting it out of concealed carry fast enough even if it was C&L. It's simply safer for myself and family that way. More chances to hurt yoursrelf or others compared to odds of ever having to use one any way. That's my opinion and what my CC instructor said was method.
True, activity train each week and hit a range helps 100%. The army we aren't allowed to carry chambered. In boot camp at night in the Fort Benning fox holes. We had during supper time break had 10-20 accidental discharges going off left and right of me. Someone would get a meal, sit down, and boom. We had blanks with a blank adapter on! Texas two accidents from open carry from wounded warrior program get together that ended that outing and program event. In both incidents, they lost their foot. One mile down my road apartment, the guy had glock the same way kill his neighbor taking his holster off. A shot through a wall hit a dude in the head. All you chambered guys doing more than military or John wick, should know. Can end up in jail, is so comfortable chambered worth living. I don't do wheelies on the highway, but all guts I know who do also carry with a chambered round. Condition 3 is okay if you are trained to know what happening around you, condition 1 is for red zones only. I will carry from condition 3 to 1 depending on my environment and situation. 99% it's always condition 3 due to my military training. Glock 19 is in condition 3 and my 1911 is in condition 2. Because I have seen highly skilled shooters with more training than thousands of hours (special forces or swat) have had a negligent discharge. My prior marine Sgt from the Army in Iraq shot his foot in condition 1 after eating his meal standing up. While on patrol in a red zone he was in condition zero without knowing it. Because orders are required to shoot back at the enemy by an officer or NCO orders only. Police put themselves by themselves into red zones each day and don't require a report to fire back and they have insurance and lawyers keeping them out of jail. If you can't take five steps back racking a round in one step. If you need condition zero, you're 99% don't have the draw. Criminal or enemy has you at their advantage anyways. 90% of the time, they will do it in a crowd with people behind them. Go John Wayne taking out the crowd behind them. Yes having one ready and just needing to pull the trigger is 100% ideal for when the moment comes, but for the 99.99999999999999% of the rest of the time, empty chamber makes my very forgetful brain feel better. Great video! Thanks for posting. As with anything, there are, at least, 2 ways to look at things. I, 100%, agree with you. But when I first started carrying, many decades ago, it was all so new to me. I carried unchambered. With much practice, I became good at chambering upon un-holstering. That's great at the range or at the house with dummy rounds. I enjoyed the practice. But, range time and controlled environments are not the real world, and sometimes, you're not going to have both hands available. Then where are you? Kids, unloading a vehicle, fighting someone off who blindsides you, can make for some very unique situations. As I got better and more confident, I started carrying with a chambered weapon.
I would not criticize anyone who doesn't follow that logic, but, for me, I would rather be at the ready, than caught off-guard with no way of defending myself or my loved ones. I applaud anyone who carries and exercises their 2nd Amendment rights. If you feel safer not having your sidearm locked and loaded, God love ya. Keep on doing what makes you feel safe and secure.
When i was in law enforcement, i would have said for sure always keep it loaded. Now that i am a husband and a father with a 4 year old i have to consider and calculate all potential possibilities. Statistically speaking, there is a greater possibility of my son somehow getting his hands on my weapon and pulling the trigger, than being is a wyatt earp style quick draw shootout with a bad guy. The point is that you can still defend your family while mitigating risk of mishandling. The point is to be aware and to practice whatever system works best for you

I've never carried in my life, but I've always tried to avoid high risk situations. When strangers approach me, especially after dark, at 15FT away I tell them to stop and then ask what they want. Now, that I have a job as an insurance adjuster and that's going to put me in certain areas (including other states) that may be unsafe. I'm months away, so I'm going through preparations. The legal issues actually concern me more than the need for a weapon. Ideally, I just want to have one in the car for a possible emergency. I don't feel it always necessary to have it on my person. With law enforcement, having it in plain view seems to be more dangerous because of the nervousness it can create. I at least want to be able to have a chance to say that I'm carrying.The laws feel like a minefield. Do I have to get a license in every state that I go to or is there a more general protocol that I can follow? It seems that there should be a national license available to cover my type of situation.
poseidon3032 actually you can not get a license to carry in any other state than where you live. Some neighboring states recognize eachothers carry laws. Also, There are many states that consider your car an extension of your home and let you carry in your car without a carry permit. As for law enforcement is concerned, if you get pulled over, keep your hands on the steering wheel and the 1st thing you tell the officer is that you have a weapon and where it is. He may ask you ro step out or tell you to keep it right there, either way he will appreciate it. There is alot to learn but the most important thing you can learn is how to shoot well.

Y'all are gonna find this funny, but here's how I got over my reluctantance of carrying with a round in the chamber:
Even after some training, I still felt a little weird about it. I carry one of a couple of Canik 9mms, or a RIA Ultra 1911.
One day, I decided to start carrying all of my guns racked and ready to fire (cocked and locked on the 1911), but without a round in the pipe. This way, I felt I was giving myself adequate proof that guns don't simply go off mysteriously, without the proper shooting procedure being applied beforehand. If anything were to happen, I'd simply get a "click" rather than a "bang". I walked around like this for two weeks, actually trying to get the thing to "click" by simply going about my everyday routine, but also arrantly allowing my sidearm to bump into things, and basically doing everything wrong. You know what happened? Nothing. I never got a click.
As a last-ditch effort to make the guns do the wrong thing, I actually took naps wearing every one of them individually (without magazines this time), just to see if that would do it. Nope.
Turns out, guns are pretty darned safe. I now carry with a round in the chamber religiously, never giving it a second thought.
Go ahead and roast me, but it really worked for me.

I used to carry empty, thinking "If I don't have half a second to chamber a round, I'm really in trouble." Then I watched a bunch of actual gunfights on the Active Self Protection channel. I realized how fast these things go down, and that it's not half seconds which decide gunfights. It's tenths of seconds. When the attack starts, you definitely are really in trouble. Needless to say, I carry hot now.

I did the same until I became comfortable with my two carries. Makes no since to have an empty chamber.
1. I live in a European country where neither I nor any of my friends and family ever were in a situation which requires you to have a gun to protect yourself, maybe there are some bad cities and neighbourhoods in the US but for the most part I would assume that it is not a lot more dangerous than Europe.
2. As you said carrying a fully loaded gun takes way more situational awareness and training, in my point of view this is the part where it becomes work, like always making sure nothing happens with your gun, being on edge, checking your surroundings always scanning for potential threats. That is basically the same a police officer does and they get paid to do it, as it is work.
Now why would I spend my Saturday afternoon or any other day when I have some leisure time, being all paranoid about potential danger never relaxing, when I can also just live my life instead as mentioned in 1. ?
3. Now lets assume I see a realistic chance that I would get into some sort of fight where I would need to carry in order to defend myself or others, over 90% of the time when the other guy would get the drop on me before I have chambered my gun, I dare to say they would have also got me on the draw.
This ain't the wild west, if you are focused by the attacker you want get out of sight preferably behind cover or if possible you want to deescalate, drawing when you are already being focused might very well get you killed. And if you are not in focus of the attacker or you just escaped it, you have time to draw and chamber the gun.
Bottom line of what I am saying, I don't see the advantage of a chambered gun as significant enough, that I would prioritize it over they peace of mind I have in regards to safety when the chamber is empty.
Like I see the chance of a hostile encounter where I would need a gun rather slim and of those potential situations there is such a small fraction of scenarios where the split seconds saved by not having to chamber a round, really matter.
But I will give you that, if you assume that something is going happen and you want to be prepared as good as possible, carrying fully loaded is the way to go.
The reasons above are just my reasons why I wouldn't want to do it.

I know 3 women that have been molested, 3 people that have died in accidents, one person I went to school with was killed by someone else, my dad was held up at gunpoint in a parking lot in daylight by an acquaintance set on killing him, and there's been a recent murder in my town. Having the mindset that "just because it hasn't happened to me or someone I know yet means it won't ever happen" just means that if it does, you'll be entirely unprepared because you can't even fathom the possibility or take any precautions. It’s actually a cool thing you can do. If someone is standing 21 feet away and starts running (21 foot rule) your odds of getting shots on target before it reaches you increase exponentially. I’ve seen live fire demonstrations of this with moving targets. Now you can argue the validity of this, but at that distance, it is reasonable to say you wouldn’t notice the attacker until they start running. You carry how you want, but it is a fact that carrying chambered results in a faster reaction time and is therefore better for a response to an attack. If you feel uncomfortable with a loaded chamber, fine. Just know that with a good holster, the gun is not going to go off.
Thats what im saying, is that you shouldn't be trying to quickdraw people, if you are in a situation where you have been caught in a dangerous situation with your weapon in its holster, and your survival depends on less than a second reaction times, you're dead already.

@@juanmeza958 if multiple people in an area are open carrying, then the chances of crime drop exponentially as there is a threat that cannot be beaten alone or even with multiple people unless there is perfect coordination. If a single person is, it would make them a target sure, but for many criminals, they would just wait until they leave as some don’t want to knowingly throw their life away. Personally, I go concealed all day. More for the people around me than potential attackers honestly, because In my state, people have little experience with firearms and I don’t feel like explaining to the cops what is happening every time I got shopping. There are benefits to both methods, and it’s up to the individual to pick what they value more. To sum it up simply:
Open: puts a target on you, but crime is less likely to happen
Concealed: Nothing preventing someone from committing a crime, but you are not more of a target and have element of surprise.

I personally think those that carry empty chambered should do so if they don't feel safe handling their pistol. I don't know, I was police so that's where I come from. Some things are merely a matter of personal opinion. This is not.
1) Anything that slows you down in a deadly defensive encounter increases your chance of not surviving that encounter. One's personal opinion might get one dead.
2) I have several pistols that come out of the safe for cleaning and range trips. That's it. I don't trust them as defensive weapons. If you don't trust your gun enough to carry it and to carry it the way it was designed to be carried, DON'T CARRY IT.
I've been in a number of self defense situations as a delivery driver, I was a security guard for about 3 years, and now I'm working my way to becoming a police officer. All I can say is that if somebody attacks you so fast that you didn't even have time to rack a round into the chamber, you were gonna get got anyway.

Being in the military we only lock and load if the weapon is goanna be in your hand at the low ready because some weapons just take a bump to release the bolt or pin. I carry all 5 of my chambers loaded in my revolver. 25 years later, still have not shot my junk off.
I fire a round per step while walking, right through my holster..that way if I need it I'm already firing. Or I carry it pointed straight ahead with my finger on the trigger because who has time to pull from a holster.

I take comfort in the fact that I can walk around with my weapon (that I can rack in half a second) unlike weapons that do have a safety and a hammer and are carried in "Condition One" and not have to worry about blowing my own balls off because of some freak incident.

I was in the Army, deployed to the front lines of Afghanistan. Our soldiers were constantly firing rounds due to accidental discharge. If the most trained people do it, so will you (whoever is reading this).

This argument can go on forever. You will always have people defending one position or the other. I used to carry with an empty chamber and 2 years ago I had the luck of being in a group of people who got held up by 2men with pistols. While they began taking wallets and other things of value I waited trying not to draw attention to myself and to what I was doing trying to figure out how to rack my slide without them noticing. The only problem though was the man getting our wallets was paying attention mostly to that task, however his buddy stood back and just stared at us with the constant reminder not to move. At one point the grab man even gave his accomplice his pistol so he could get our stuff quicker. There were several golden opportunities to draw and take him out when he would follow his buddy to put more fear into some stubborn person. Had I been carrying with a bullet on top, I have no doubt I could have ended that threat very quickly.
I have been shooting since I was 5 years old, from my daisy red ryder, my first 22 and so on including 20 years in the military.
After that incident I now carry with one in the chamber. As bad luck would have it I was given a chance to redeem myself 3 months ago to the date. While waiting in line at this store kind of in the middle of no where In New Mexico to purchase a nice cold Dr. Pepper someone comes in with a gun and demanding money and what not waiving a pistol all over. I waited for an opportunity only this time I had a bullet chambered and ready to go. I was actually hoping that this man get what he came in for, which sempt to be the cash register money and leave. However he grew irrate when there wasn't much money in there and proceeded to fire a round into the ceiling and then two into the floor. He then smashed the cashier's face with his pistol smacking her several times until blood was pooring out of her nose which he had broken. The store which is a mom and pop store been out there on the side of I-25 sits across from Starvation Peak a mountain that is a historic landmark. Now seeing all this blood and the old cashier (the owner) bleeding all over
everyone was shaken and as he shouted he was going to kill everyone if she didn't produce more money which they really don't make that much money there anyway, he started demanding the customers wallets and purses shouting, the cash, the cash mother#$#@!@$.
I chose my time, drew my pistol slowly acting as if I were getting my wallet. I knew I just had to get it out and it was ready to fire. If I had to chamber a round, he would have seen for sure and it would have gone bad for us and I knew it. I waited for my chance to launch my counter attack. His attention shifted towards another elderly woman who was so petrified with fear could not move. He screamed at her letting go of the cashier and proceeded to strike her in the face with his free hand.
It happened quickly as I took a few small steps to get in a position in front of a man who I had been behind, I had used him for concealment, once my line of sight was clear I fired twice striking him both times in the chest. He immediately fell and I quickly moved in on him ready to shoot him again. He had dropped his pistol and I grabbed it. I remember him groining and when he tried to breathe I remember hearing crackling sounds. My loads were 45 Hornady Critical Defence and not to suprisingly to me he had been carrying a Glock 17 loaded to the max, with one in the chamber guys, his ammo, Hornady Critical Defence rounds in 9mm. This man had a warrant in Alabama for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, strong armed robbery, felon in possession with a stolen firearm, and on and on.
Anyway I learned from these two situatons. I now carry with one in the chamber ready to go. I learned that sometimes in a close up situation, much easier to wait for your opportunity and know your ready to go. These Bastards allways have the drop on you and sometimes you have to wait for your turn.
Remember though, in the end go with whats best for you. My life revolves around firearms and I've been in actual combat so my skill level is higher than the average Joe. My training automatically kicked in.
I encourage if you carry a firearm, train, train, train, as often as you can. I know it's time consuming and ammunition can get expensive, but the more training you got under your belt, the better it will serve you if you should, God forbid, ever find yourself in a life or death situation.
If you do, remember it happends fast so situational awareness is very important. The bad person, or persons will have the element of surprise more often than not.
Remember to wait your turn and never, never, draw your firearm on a drawn gun, you will get shot. Compliance doesn't guarantee you won't be harmed. There are some sick evil people out there who's intentions and motovations may not be that they just want your money and then run. Unfortunately some are targetting you or a loved one. Women need to be extra careful with all these rapists and keep an extra eye out for your children and all children, so many damn pedophiles are out there too.
Last, if you make that decision that your going to fight, go at it with everything you got, 110%, anything goes, bite, scratch, tear their eyes out, their balls, whatever to give yourself the best chance that you will survive. So for those of us that carry, I say in the end you do what you are most comfortable with. Bullet cocked and locked in the chamber ready to go, or if you prefer practice on racking that slide in all kinds of potential situations so you can be as quick as possible when it's go time. Hopefully you never will find yourself in any of these situations. I hope my experiences have helped some of you to decide. Remember no one wants to take another persons life, but if it's between you or them, you do what you have to so you can go home to your loved ones.

I agree with most of what you said except for a few ideas. In all my years as a trainer with firearms, I have found that many people that are intimidated by guns or are apprehensive about carrying one have to be treated a bit differently when first introduced to daily carry. You can't simply demand they carry a particular way just because it's how you carry it or because it's quicker to draw. That will only make them want to not carry one at all. That's the opposite of what you're trying to do. You also have to remember that a newbie to guns is not going to try to out draw anyone anyway, so let's put that aside for now. Let's just get them comfortable with carrying a gun. Let's teach them it's capabilities and limitations.
With familiarity comes trust. People have to know their guns and how they function before they can trust them. No matter how much you try to show them safeties work, they will not trust them until they are ready to. Instead let's train them to load, shoot and unload their guns. Throw in some marksmanship just to make it fun. Stress safety all the time.
It will not take long before they begin to feel they know their gun and begin to develop a trust in it's capabilities and limitations. Then the willingness to carry a loaded gun will follow. If you know someone who still carries an unloaded gun even after years of carrying, then they still don't trust their gun because of lack of training. I'm not talking about shooting cans in the backyard, but real training. Real training develops trust. Until then, they're just trigger pullers.
Also on another point. You say there's no difference between a hammer forward guy and the "I'll rack it later" guy. There's actually a very big difference. I can arm the hammer on a single action only pistol or revolver with one hand. It's been done that way for many, many decades. I would need two hands to rack a semi-auto. (yeah, yeah, I know. Some guns are designed to rack with one hand...blah. blah. blah....whatever.....I've yet to see anyone ever do that on a range while TRAINING.) The one handed operation is very doable in comparison to the "hold on a sec...lemme load my gun" scenario. Those two are not just alike or even similar.

I agree with most of what you said, except a newbie should NOT be starting out with a semiauto. There's nothing wrong with the much more reliable DA revolver for beginners.
There are no FTFs or FTEs with a revolver, no safeties to think about, no magazines to go bad, and they will handle just about any load and bullet configuration you can put in the chamber. You also cannot put a round backwards in a revolver's chamber like newbies try with semiauto magazines.
It's a shame that some people think a revolver is obsolete. They can be dead wrong.

I don't go anywhere unless absolutely necessary. Like the grocery store twice a month. The only other places I've gone in the last month is the gun store and my private range. I got used to staying at home during 2020 and I'm fine with that. Just have to restock food every now and then. Lost my trust and everybody I've known out here from ripping me off. So Nobody invites me to go shooting off-roading or anything with them anymore. After I taught everyone how to shoot and reload that was in our group. Which is fine I'm very happy being alone I discovered. Less frustration.

I've been carrying everyday for over a year. I'm still hesitate to carry locked & loaded. My thought is, if an attacker statically uses ambush as there tactics. Locked & loaded really won't up your chances. Just because your carrying doesn't mean you can even draw your pistol. I prefer to use all my instincts & situation awareness to lesson any threat Or situation. I believe our brain is our greatest primary weapon & our sidearm is secondary. In my 56 years of life, i've never been drawn on, nor needed to draw. Very much hoping i continue to bat a 1000. The 2nd amendment allows either option & choice. Do what makes you comfortable. I carried for awhile with an empty chamber when I was new to carrying everyday until I felt comfortable that I wouldn't have a neglegent discharge. I say carry however you feel safe doing so.
I'd disagree. I don't have an issue with carrying one in the chamber as a rule. It's generally safe. But first off...if you were in an active shooter scenario like he described it would literally be the opposite of what he said. If you are 1 of 200 people in his line of sight, most likely you'd have time to react. You're first move should be to get to cover in that scenario anyways. If you had someone with a weapon out and your first reaction was to draw you're already dead. Violence rarely happens out of nowhere. In most scenarios there is always a buildup. I don't know who this guy is but he's simply defending his personal opinion. That's it. If you needed to pull the weapon and fire in a fraction of a second, you're probably already missed multiple signs.

There is no cover at a supermarket you're going to hide behind a potato chips and lose your life. Don't tell me the freezers because you can't get behind them 90% of the time and when it breaks out you better know every inch of that supermarket there are too many places and too many scenarios where an unchambered weapon is going to cost you, either your life or someone you're trying to protect. And I've only been carrying for 50+ years. My credentials include starting with national match competition long before I was 13 years old. As I got older and got into ipsc in other types of shooting. I'm not going to go into my work overseas. Yes people have discharges negligent mostly. I have yet to have one of those and I hope it never happens to me but I would never support the idea of carrying an empty weapon because you fear a negligent or accidental discharge. Train train and train again. I train nearly daily I live on a piece of property where I have that luxury. I've trained with SRT and other.
The point of trying to make is if you're responsible if you're careful if you keep your weapon and top shape and negligent discharge is something that may never happen. Again it's your responsibility to keep your weapon in the top functioning shape as well as yourself. I've carried every day for more than a half century there is no time off. And when I'm 80 years old I probably still will be carrying one of the things that I did the most is train people out of a passion to keep firearms safe and keep people safe. the well-oiled machine is not only the weapon it's also the person behind it. I carry 1911 almost exclusively for the last half century I have carried a Glock 21 due to contractual obligations. For the most part I carry two 1911s, and on some occasion I carry a revolver usually my 357 Magnum 2 and 5/8 in model 19 with some fairly high penetrating rounds for the most obvious of reasons. I carry an SBR in the truck with me. None of these ever separate a negligent or accidental discharge. It's your choice when I have to go to condition red I don't want to be racking a slide or fumbling with a hammer which can create a negligent discharge in itself.
You can just chamber the round when violence happens, just like you can put your seat belt on real quick right before you get into a car crash..
So say you get mugged and don’t have both your hands..can you rack the slide. If you don’t trust your holster and your safeties you have to realize you’re taking on way more risk.
This is why I carry a snubnose revolver don’t have to worry about no dam slide or even cocking a hammer I pull it out it’s ready to shoot it’s perfectly safe to carry I’ve carried my 357/38 special snub nose for over 10 years never had an issue with it always loaded and ready to defend me

I carry a glock 19 unchambered, and there's nothing anyone will ever say to convince me otherwise. The likelihood of me ever needing to discharge my firearm in the direction of any human being is so infintesimally small that it's simply not worth the risk of having a weapon chambered on my person.
You do realize that a glock 19 has 3 safties built into it. You sound like you don't understand your firearm that well. The entire design of the gun is based on carrying it loaded. Do what you're comfortable with. If you want to leave it in drawers and gloveboxes without one in it that makes sense, but on your person unloaded. Like keeping your car on empty becuase you think it's going to expoled at any moment. meanwhile the risks of running out of gas and getting stranded or causing an accident or needing to go to sketchy gas stations goes way up along with a million other risks. Accidental discharges due to a holster were a lot more common back in the day, most people shouldn't be worried about having one in the chamber with modern kydex holsters

Its illegal to have one in the chamber in most states without a CFP. This guy is going to get people in trouble. And seriously, how long does it take to rack the slide? If you don't have time to rack the slide, I don't think drawing your side arm would be the best option as you are probably hand to hand on the ground. Knives are more effective in that situation.
I appendix carry, and have trained to draw/charge (since the hand is right there pulling the shirt up), I’ve got the draw/charge, and fire down to 1.5 seconds. The charging literally happens on the push out for aim. It’s a single movement. I bet I could draw, fire 3 rounds, clear and holster before this dude could find his pistol on his hip.

I'm an amateur gun owner but I also hope to take EMT classes because not everyone naturally knows how to dress wounds properly. I also hope to gain some knowledge with takedowns or wrestling or pins, because I also carry handcuffs with me. You never know when you might need to cuff someone who's being crazy/rowdy or needs to be captured for the police or safety of the people near you. Least of all, your own safety.
I hate how duty holsters are only for people who 'serve in duty'. Aliengear needs to offer level 3 retention duty holsters for other gun models that aren't full size guns. I hate the weird exclusivity for certain items in the gun world.
Anyways, it doesn't take much to rack a slide and one should always find cover instead of haphazardly engaging a gunman or whatever enemy is around, to rack the slide and load the gun.
Learning to have 'some' close combat skills would be preferable, and wear a knife/sheath/holster horizontal to your belt in front of your belly to stab the person who you may be grappling/pushing away when they're attacking and facing you directly.
I have muscle fatigue issues due to many possible reasons, so I can only rely on being able to do certain things offensively/defensively in a swift manner akin to an assassin, and that's my style anyways.
@@Desertpunk1986 unfortunately not all indoor ranges allow people to practice fast draws and shooting, but what I do as an amateur gun shooter is practice lowering my gun down, then pulling it back up to point/aim and shoot within 1-3 seconds upon raising the gun and train to line up sights quickly. Some people have terrible eye vision like myself so I have to put more effort into that practice.

I was British military I carried browning hipower, sa80, slr and sterling smg during my career, including in Iraq, Kosovo, NI and Afghan and we were under strict rules never to carry a round in the chamber. The only time to put a round in the chamber was when you were going to use it. My trade carried live weapons nearly everyday and despite handling those weapons and getting tested on weapon handling every 3 months we still had folks having what we called negligent discharges, despite loading and unloading being supervised . Mistakes happen after 12 hour night shift

I was in British Army too for just shy of 14 yrs 1pwo/1yorks from 98 to 2011. 2 tours of N.I, tour Bosnia, 1 tour sierra leone in 2000. Currently 9 yrs active in US Army 1 tour of Afghanistan, both infantry. I carry everyday in civilians with my personal side arm IWI Jericho which I carry at ted status ie 1 in the chamber. It all comes down to skill set of the individual and ensuring they know their wpn inside and out correctly. I also own an IWI Tavor X95 5.56 it's a sweet thing.

More training probably would make me more comfortable with one in the pipe, sure. But I do train my fitness (something a lot of the gun/carry community doesn't do, let's admit it) and I train something that I find extremely underrated: charisma.
Worked as a paramedic for a few years in a very sketchy city just outside of Detroit, and got in some hairy situations. Not allowed to carry, didn't supply vests. Being able to talk someone down is a grossly underutilized skill in this community. I value my charisma a thousand times more than I value a round in the chamber. Honestly, I 100% disagree with the "violence happens fast" argument. There's (often, not always) a long, heated build-up to a shootout, and if you can't notice that, you've got other problems.
Will not having one in the chamber get me killed? It could, sure. But like I said, I don't carry one in the chamber, and I'm happy with that.

Two of them where they racked the slide and misfired and another where a semi auto so gets stuck in full auto while shooting. I keep a pistol in EACH hand, loaded, cocked, safety off, one in the chamber, finger on the trigger and pointed straight out, arms parallel to the ground. I also rotate slowly 360 degrees as I walk. The only problem I have experienced is that I have to stop frequently to rest; a small price I think to stay safe.

It is FAR more likely that one of my kids will accidentally fuck with it while im holding them than it is for me to ever be in a situation where I need to fire it. An empty chamber is one extra safety precaution when you are wrangling small children alone in say... A busy grocery store. Small kids make carrying a LOT more difficult and risky.
Personally, I'd go with a conceal carry with an empty chamber. If havoc breaks out in a civilian setting, concealed carry means you likely won't be a priority target and you'll find time to set yourself up for the appropriate defense.

It's a trade-off . . . likelihood of rapid development threat vs likelihood of an accidental discharge. Not as easy of a question as some want to believe.
Statistically, you're far more likely to shoot yourself or have an accidental discharge than be shot, at least in most places. Unless you live in a really bad neighborhood, it's probably not going to be beneficial to carry with a round chambered. Doubly so if you don't have a good holster or if you feel uncomfortable with it chambered.
Go with whatever makes you comfortable, and train with it that way. The last thing you want to do is ruin your life because of an accidental discharge that lands you with a conviction, all because you were being extra careful planning for a situation that is very, very unlikely to ever occur.

It is actually a very easy question and there's no such thing as an accidental discharge.
In Afghanistan I carried a Berretta and an M4. I chambered rounds when outside the wall but on post I did not. In everyday life accidents are way more common than split-second violence. You can always adjust your posture if the situation dictates, but to just walk around hot all the time....unnecessary in my opinion.
