My Father interviewed him a number of times lovely man and very gracious, but always had a nervous energy, he said that Del Monaco and Corelli along with Di Stefano certainly were much the best Tenors from 46 till 60, in the Italian Opera sphere, Pavarotti came on the scene and the area of power shifted, for a while although the he had none of the Power of the other three. He also Interviewed Giovanni Martinelli three times and Corelli came up, Martinelli said he was a truly great Spinto Tenor with film star looks and a kindness of heart, I had many conversations and meetings with him and Del Monaco in New York , both were friendly rivals we often talked of Fanciulla and Otello and other roles, also Caruso, this was in 1964 and it was poignant that he talked of Otello with BOTH these great Tenors, Del Monaco knew the role inside out, but always looked for something different, Corelli was more interested in Caruso, Martinelli said I explained that Caruso, was not one Voice but many voices of Colours Shades and with a smoothness that was from God himself. Caruso was capable of making Men and Women cry even Nellie Melba would often cry whilst listening to him, Corelli really understood this, so to Del Monaco because they were around when people who had heard Caruso were still alive. I still believe that the Singers today are really only third rate compared to the Tenors of the post War period and probably the tenors of the age before the last war excluding Caruso were very much better again in their period there were so many truly great Singers from many Countries, even then Caruso was thought to be in another Universe, his like will never be heard again and I doubt we will here a Corelli or Del Monaco again either. Lovely rare film of a beautiful Tenor Voice and Human being.
Adoro Mario Del Monaco! Saluti e grazie. Manuel Ferrante.
I swear his voice gets younger throughout the evening. Truly stunning singing. Simplicity with passion. My favourite tenor. Love the random audience tenor at the end on the "ahimè"! 😀

Even near the end of his career, Corelli maintained the ability to thrill his listeners. Something that he never lost. Even though his voice is not what it was once, his emotions are incredibly credible.
Could you help me understand why a beautiful man with a stunning voice and considerable talent in opera only garners about 30,000 views, whereas a renowned figure, often hailed as the "King of Opera," receives nearly ten times that amount?
@@PragueImport It definitely wasn't. Echo is an echo and it doesn't change the original sound. Listen how Corelli cuts the high note short, the "echo" slides down from the high note - that's not how echo works. It was a different singer and that's why Corelli reacted the way he did.
This is quite a find. I have never seen this and enjoyed it immensely. There was a little miscommunication between Franco and Nello on the last piece. Thank you.

While I very much appreciate this video, I must say that this is valuable as history and biography, and not so much as an example of this tenor's best work. Here, on this 1970 performance he has no phrasing. This is particularly noticable in the first aria. He continued in one long line, with not one sign of the wonderful phrasing of earlier performances. In contrast to the cystal clear diction for which he was known, his wording through this entire performance was muddied. He had the power and control for which he was known. The question would be...why was he singing with such a lack of clarity? Just on the basis of biographies, , I would say that by this time Franco Corelli was experiencing so much nervous anxiety and stage fright, that he could not control his phrasing and pronunciation. It is strange in my opinion, to hear him singing with the strength and power of previous years, in combination with such muddied phrasing. Here was a tenor known for the ability to tell a story with a song. Phrasing...the placement of breaths along the lines of the music ...was key to communication of meaning and emotion. By 1970 Franco Corelli was still a full five years from retirement. This video has me thinking that by 1970 he was already experiencing a loss of confidence. Thank you very much for this video.

It always cracks me up how there is a tenor in the audience also singing the final high note in 'O Paradiso' that evokes a "wtf" glare from Corelli.
