I’ve been making variations of this dopp kitt for many years. The one that people like best is the side by side zippers that allow for the entire middle to open as a flap. This eliminates the issue of the small zipper opening. The same thing can be achieved with a singular zipper that wraps around the bag. My one piece of advice for you is that the lin8ng you used will look pretty lousy in a short amount of time. There are so many great materials that are waterproof or water resistant, and I suggest using one of those. Another thing you can do is increase the pattern by 600% to get a type of duffle bag. The “H” pattern is super flexible.
A suggestion for the lining: Consider using a waterproof fabric that can be wiped with a damp cloth, e.g., ripstop waterproof nylon. It would protect both the interior and exterior of the bag from becoming stained by spills or leaking toiletry containers.
I used to fall asleep to your videos when you were just a pair of hands, no music, just timelapse content. I was just a kid then, I found you interesting because I was building boats. I've been your fan for 9 years now. Crazy how time flies. I was 14, now I'm 23! Edit: wow thats crazy, what are the chances I thought of you 30 mins after you uploaded a video of 2 weeks of no content 😅 that's some pretty witchy stuff 🧙🧹 Next video: authentic witches broom lol Edit again: after further irestagation, I've found that Diresta has never just been a pair of hands, nor have they ever been just timelapse content 😅😳 I just used to watch them from a console and the UA-cam that I was using at that time didn't have filters options for me to view older content, so I guess I just happened to watch videos In the style described. Regardless it's pretty badass and definitely influenced my creativity novice wise 🤗
9/9/24..2day leather 'Dopp kit' (travel & shaving bag)...another fine video Jimmy!👍⚙️ Much enjoy your overall style..intro of 'what' & materials with brief comments then Fast Forward (very fast!) to 'making' with frequent 'normal' intervals with relevant comments then FF, then normal & comments & so on until the finished product(s) with closing talk & encouragement. Oh...emphasis on yur Weaver 303 machine was later changed...to another (more heavy duty) 203..?..so thanks for this honest process of making a very nice travel shave bag. A+👍👍💪 Stay safe & carry on..👍👨🔧🍺😊
I miss making things. I recently moved to another country and left all my tools behind. Your videos really help. It almost feel as if I'm there, in the workshop with you making stuff. It gives me a lot of peace. Thanks Jimmy.
It's fascinating to watch the process of creating a toiletry bag from textured leather. You can see the amount of work you've put into improving every detail with each new piece. Your passion for quality and attention to detail are impressive.
Jimmy, I could watch you all day long. I also like crafting but you always make it look so easy - even if it isn't. Many greetings from Germany. Thanks for the many ideas.
Always enjoy the leather videos. I've got a cloth version of this where the top goes out wider with the sipper, but you can button it down the the same shape as what you made if that makes sense. It lets you get full access to the insides.
One of the older videos you made your own pants. Back then I remember thinking how cool it would be to learn to do that. From then to now your videos still inspire me. Beautiful work.
I stumbled through affixing the felt liner on my last project. Now I know better what to use and how to apply it. Thanks Jimmy p.s. cheers on the shirt
Hi Jimmy. The bags came out beautiful! At first, I didn't really like the embossed leather and thought it looked too busy but on the finished bags, I think it looks great. The liner is a nice touch and contrasts nicely with the leather!
I can watch you work for days. If I were 20 years younger, I'd ask to apprentice with you. You methodology is awe inspiring. Thanks for posting. I'm rootin fer ya!
"If somebody else has done it, I can do it..." Words to live by Jimmy. If you don't try, you'll never know. In Australia, we call it having a crack at something. e.g. "I'll have a crack at making that bag." Thanks for the inspiration.
Mr. Diresra, maybe after you fold over and glue the sides, you complete the bag as you did and then saddle stitch across the sides where you glued it in place because you already had the stitches there. Love watching your videos. ❤
Oh wow.... I haven't heard the term "Dopp kit" in ages! That's what my grandfather always called it. Very nice work. I definitely prefer the southwest version.
Jimmy, I agree with your opinoin of this style of Dopp kit zipper. The Dopp kit that I have had for 40 years is made like an old timey Doctor's bag, with a zipper in the hinged opening instead of a clasp. This works a lot better, in my opinion.
The wife put on Miss Congeniality last week, I was surprised to see your brother was in it. Haven’t seen John do anything publicly in a long time, hope he is doing well. Would love to see him doing a cameo in one of your videos. I’m going to go back and re-watch the Hammered episodes, I loved that series. Cheers Jimmy!
Very nice job! (as aways!) And very inspiring! I think you could create a U-shaped opening, with the zipper running around the "mouth" - you'd have great viewing and access!
I have a similar bag I keep my clippers in. It has a double zipper on each side tied together by a handle. A Velcro on the end keeps it sealed. That way the whole top of the bag peels away open like a banana. Easy access to everything inside.
My brother gave me one a long time ago that the top opens as a big flap long ways and has a magnet inside it to hold it shut if you don’t want to zip it shut. It’s awesome.
I had a duffel bag with the same basic shape as your dopp kit. Instead of one zipper down the middle, it had two parallel zippers on the top that created a wide pull back panel so it was easier to get into it.
One thing that’s cool to address the restricted access opening is using 2 zippers that are parallel on the edges of the bag, (instead of one down the middle) with a string / rope / strap in between that you pull to open both at once.
Agreed, the leather itself is the center piece of the product, blemishes made by myself instantly equal discount or start over. I bought a Cobra Class 4 machine and sold it less than 2 years later and only hand stitch now because of the marks left by that machine. If the tool makes the product worse, I don't want it! But also very hard to mass produce hand stitched items without employees.
Suggestion on sewing the side: before you sew the folded edge, sew the zipper add than the handle and tab and with the bag leather side out. than you can open the zipper and sew the folded edge to the zipper edge with the two lines of stitching (you could probably glue it first) than flip it so the fleece side is out and sew the sides.
Try lengthening the zipper and the zipper leather to go all the way down the sides. If you keep it in the middle the case will clam shell. Move it to the side and it becomes a lid. Don't know if that will fix the rivet issue but you will get better access to the inside of the finished bag.
Im not a sewing expert, especially with leather but i feel like the only way to stitch up the seams that you glued would be to do only a single stitch first, reverse it to its "final" shape and then do the 2nd line of stitching with the inner section already tucked in place. This way you still visually have the clean double line but its also properly secured with thread. Otherwise, i do think that 2 simple brass rivets to go with the zipper are perfectly fine too. They add a bit of color and texture to the overall body.
We call them Toiletry Bags and they are usually lined with a water proof liner so soaps and wet items can be put in after a shower or shave. Got a few of them due to being constantly thrown in hospital ;-D
Loved this Jimmy. This might be a bad idea, but how about a snap button in the end bit? It could be a little storage area for your keys or something. Handy if you're away on a big weekend. You'd never lose them :-)
And idea: If you don't create a folded hem for the zip ends, but instead sew those ends together, you won't need to glue... 4 vertical corners--and the bind the raw edges with skived down leather for a clean interior. (Though I have a post bed machine, which makes some steps for this type of bag relatively easier...).
Make some leather waist bags! I've been looking for ones with a more vertical length as they are more comfortable and get in the way less. I have found very few. I want to store oblong items in them like my huge phone, but also tools - but not too big. Basically nothing wants to be stored horizontally. I prefer that they hang a little below the waist belt as they don't interfere with jackets and sweaters as much, making them feel less intrusive. I have made one myself that I absolutely love (by combining two existing bags), but I want to make a cohesive item in leather. Also, stay away from square shapes, it should be rounded or the edges will become annoying.
Interesting tidbit I have heard in the past, 1 oz of leather is approximately 1/64th of an inch, or about .016" (.4mm)... I think that helps gives people some frame of reference.. 👍🏻🍻

„just a pair of hands“ are you confusing him with This Old Tony?
@@AgiHammerthief I don't think "just timelapse content" would describe This Old Tony, even his older content.

@@codytaylor2868 thank you! Thank you! 🙏🏼💪🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 I try to keep it fresh and find to the best of my ability ❤️
I love that your relationship with Weaver Leather is ongoing. True "loyalty" is immeasurable and is either 100% on, or its off. Nice work, nice video.

My mom was great on the sewing machine but she would be jealous of your work Jimmy!
always inspirational to watch, I love to see you problem solve, and i love the attitude of if someone else can make this so can I
Very nice materials, very nice concept. I guess those bags gonna sell like hot cakes. Good work, Jimmy.
compliment 👍 cool your new leather shop👌
I enjoy watching you work with leather, Thanks! 👍
Adding the liners was a cool way to address the thin leather. I think it adds a level of quality feel to it as well.
Always a pleasure watching you work sir!
Great job once again! The bags look great, the liners add a nice touch.
That's so great man.. love that you're always trying new stuff
Beautiful work Jimmy!
You're a man of many talents.
Always enjoy the leather videos. I've got a cloth version of this where the top goes out wider with the sipper, but you can button it down the the same shape as what you made if that makes sense. It lets you get full access to the insides.
A lot of solid sewing advice here!
Well done Jimmy & I always learn something of interest from watching your videos. The best lesson from this is learning from ones mistakes. 👍👍
One of the older videos you made your own pants. Back then I remember thinking how cool it would be to learn to do that. From then to now your videos still inspire me. Beautiful work.
Leather always looks classy Jimmy, even with a few scratches, adds character if you ask me! :)
Great work as always Jimmy! you the man!
Always heard it called a dopp kit. Someday somebody will tell me why. Always interesting and fun to see your process. Thanks for sharing!
I stumbled through affixing the felt liner on my last project. Now I know better what to use and how to apply it. Thanks Jimmy p.s. cheers on the shirt
Anyway I must be living under a rock for 77 yrs.always a shaving kit I'll relent Dopp bag it is,thanks for all your efforts🤗😎🤗😎

Dude that's awesome your work is super inspiring. That material is beautiful I will be checking out weaver for sure!
Thanks for sharing Jimmy
the liner looks very nice!
Good job mister Diresta beautifully done
Beautiful, Jimmy! They look amazing!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I've always liked the hinged top bag which opens wide but these are great looking bags.

I have my dad's dopp kit. Not as intricate as these but 😥 I miss him.

He is doing loads of standup In the west coast we live in Cali and ny so it’s not easy to get him. But it’s the goal
Very nice job! (as aways!) And very inspiring!
I think you could create a U-shaped opening, with the zipper running around the "mouth" - you'd have great viewing and access!
It almost doesn’t matter what you make or do, you are inspirational - thank you.
I also use glue when I have a precision quilt piecing or binding project to sew.
Nice project!
I really like the rivet idea.
Exelente trabajo manual
Y un gran utensilios de viaje y muy elegante
Felicidades Jimmy

Love your hands-on vids
Very cool great bags. Thanks for sharing
Those sewing machines are solid. Nice project.
They look cool…I def want to get into leather stuff
I'll be damned. I've always called mine a "Dobb" kit. Damnit Jimmy! You just learned me something new!
My brother gave me one a long time ago that the top opens as a big flap long ways and has a magnet inside it to hold it shut if you don’t want to zip it shut. It’s awesome.
always a pleasure
In the Navy back in the 60s, we called it a Diddy Bag.
I had a duffel bag with the same basic shape as your dopp kit. Instead of one zipper down the middle, it had two parallel zippers on the top that created a wide pull back panel so it was easier to get into it.
it is beautiful. thanks for sharing

Great video. Nice bags but agree with your points. Mahalo for sharing!
Jimmy! I’m like a kid at Christmas on each of your videos.
yes! new content!

I bought a sailrite leathermaster a few months ago. I dont onow why im intimidated using it, but i think this will be my first project
Nice work.
Damn those look great. Enjoyed watching this come along on Patreon.

Awesome work as usual Jimmy, love that south western patterned leather 🔥
Awesome job

They look really good. Would you want to put a water proof liner in instead? I made a wash bag very much similar to that with one.
Awesome. Did you solve the issue with the missing stitch? do you think you could you have made the zipper flaps longer and just left it unstitched?
Saying "Put it in a safe place" while casually throwing it to the side :)
I like them! Jimmy, did you give any thought to the double zipper type of bag? May be more difficult but gives great access into the bag
Потрясающая работа. Привет из России.
Beautiful! Where can I buy one of your bags? Thanks… I enjoyed watching!
Cutting the zipper! Never thought of that.
Very nice

Good job anyway ❤to see more
Good hands jimmy
the next step will be making shoes! but you should do as Daniel Day-Lewis did who spent 2 years learning in an artisan workshop in Firenze
I learn more from a half hour video from than hours of reading instructions
My Dopp bag has 2 zippers on either side of a flap that allows full access to the inside. You might think about adding it to your design. - Chris

2 zipper flap top gives full access. The handle straddles both zippers.
Came here to say the same. The flap between the zippers really opens things up. Enjoy your content, as always!
the zipper can be put around the top part like a "mouth" with 3/4 of the perimeter of the top part
What can you not do? Great projects all the time
With the hand fit problem I wonder if an upside down trapazoid shape would be feasible?❤ just curious
