    I’ve never heard it out in front as you play it. I didn’t realize how good this bass line was. That band was lightning in a bottle and the very best was still to come. Jacksonville funk/rock!

    Outstanding, Troy!!! Leon RIP was a total badass. This is my favorite LS tune and you showed how complex and athletic Leon's bassline really was. I have it on good authority he used Scott's Liquid Gold of all things to wipe down his flatwound strings before he played!

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 років тому +3

      +Eddie Pecchio Thanks a lot. Yes, I knew the bass line was involved but I definitely underestimated it when I finally sat down to learn it. It was a real eye (and ear) opener. When I was young, there was a spray on lubricant for guitars...I used it a couple of times but have forgotten what it was called...fast frets or something.

    Great playing! Leon Wilkeson was overshadowed by three guitarist, a great singer/songwriter and powerhouse drummer. Many times Bass guitar gets lost in the mix and not noticed as much as other instruments. He was an unsung hero in Skynyrd.

    Skynyrd back in the day was a disciplined, tight band and a lot of their basslines were really good. Somewhere on youtube is the isolated bassline (not Leon) for Freebird, and it's so good, it's almost like he's making the bass cry. All these years and I never noticed it until I heard that, and that's a song most of us who grew up in the 80s can't stand to listen to after they overplayed it on radio, but that bass track puts new life in it.

      Helium Road
      , I have heard the Isolated Bass Tracks .. I love em.. i listen to lots of them . and they help me figure some things out in the learning process ya no..and they also helped me Humanize some of my Bass heros too.. Guys i idolized as a young Bass player coming up ..Guys like Geddy, Gezzer, Steve harris , John Paul.. you get the idea im sure.. ISO Traks alow ya to hear the lil imperfections they did in the studio recordings .. things ya cant really hear on the albums ya no.. anyway....
      Ed King played & Recorded the Bass for "FREEBIRD" and in my opinion is one of the Biggest songs of all time.. Iconic song indeed... But all the Bass lines were written by Leon Wilkinson... Im a person that actually thinks that No One shud ever play Free Bird.. 90% of the bands out there butcher it anyways.. its not because i don't like the song, love the song.. it's because it such a big song... By "Big" i mean , everyone in your band my band who evers band.. We can all know our respected parts ya no, that's whatever...The Magic in that song is IF and When ya can all bring it together as One... Its not about everyone knowing the song its about everyone feeling the song... Anyways , sorry just felt like sharing that i guess..lol..
      Rock On Helium Road... thanks for listening . i mean reading.. sorry for the novel brother...

      I think it's a good sounding bass as well. The p/u's are really interesting. When the tone is full up, they act as single coils. When you back off the tone (below 7) another coil is activated and the p/u becomes a humbucker.

      +Glenn Affeld Thanks. It's actually not wallpaper, they are masks that I have displayed. I just collect them, not make them.

    Troy I'm a huge fan of Skynyrd since about 1992 ... I also play this song on the bass but after watching you, I realize I'm just faking it lmao.. it sounds great when I do it, but not like this... cool man 😁

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  5 років тому +1

      Cool. I pretty much started out playing Skynyrd and that's the beauty of it, you can do a decent rendition of it without all the bells and whistles. The core of the bass line is strong and the rest is just frosting. But, the frosting is there for you when you're ready to taste it.
