I had to let the copyright strike dust settle before posting another video from my "short notice gig" list of songs. I think every bass player has messed around with this one at one time or another. I remember playing this in one of my first bands though no one ever sang it and it always fell apart at the end. I'm playing this one pretty close to the album version, but not exactly...some parts are "in the spirit of" the original bass part.
Last month, on the Cygnus X-1 Facebook group I belong to, I saw a "40th Anniversary Cover Contest" being held by Indaba Music...whatever that is. I submitted the audio track from the "Time Stand Still" collaboration I did with Harry a while back. I should have read the description of the contest before entering it as they were looking for "creative, contemporary covers" and not the standard, run of the mill covers that I enjoy doing. I don't really think Rush is the type of band, or the type of music, that lends itself to a contest of this sort. I don't have any hopes of winning, placing or showing in the contest, as our "tribute" doesn't fit the criteria, I just thought I'd let you know this was out there.

Anyone who feels the bass line isn't crucial to a song, need only to listen to this to see just how wrong they are.
Bigtime!
You hit the nail on the head. This bass line is a hidden treasure.
it is the link between the drums and guitar, it often drives the song and more often than not provides the melody - John Paul Jones is a genius.
@Dave Gill There are plenty of amazing bassists and musicians who don't know theory. Anyways shitting on people who play music you don't like is pretty douchey.
Fast tempo songs makes it more difficult to have a melodic bass line. With that said, when a song like this breaths, the bass player is only limited be lack of sound, feel and imagination!
man Zeppelin had some insane bass
Sometimes.
What do you mean sometimes! Lemon Song, Immigrant Song, Achilles Last Stand....there are countless.
Shreya, check out some Jeff Berlin, Percy Jones, Alain Caron....to name a few....
JPJ was easily the most musically gifted member of Zep.
JPJ , the least spoke of, MOST VALUABLE!
This is why the bass is the King of Instruments!
I am a bassist myself. With that said, your statement is debatable. What certainly is a fact is that if one chooses to only play rudimentary bass lines, that is on the player, not the instrument!
Bass ties everything together like the carpet in the big lebowski Bass on 🤘🤩🤘
It almost seems too good to be true - such masterful electric bass playing to sound and BE that good. Little did many know when this record was released in '69 that Mr. Jones was already a seasoned session veteran. It's very intimidating bass playing. It screams "I 'know'...what I am doing so, don't even try to copy me." His playing was so clever that it should be a lesson to ALL that aspire to play bass. My ears seem to never tire of hearing this mans' playing. Troy, yet again, unearthed some tricky passages that I have had some trouble copping. Thanks again my friend. Don't ever stop making these videos!
He was known as the " governor " at that time pre led zeppelin 1963-68. Amazing player and all around musian.
The bass is so sexy in this song
Jonesy was the backbone of Zeppelin... absolutely brilliant
AWESOME tone from that bass
Thanks.
I am curious to know how a bass line would sound on a "classic rock" song played with a "modern bass."
Who could have done this bass lines no one else but JPJ, a seasoned musician.
Perfect, tnx for covering this.
Truth.
Thank you, Leticia.
As noted by many is the bass lines and choices made in this song. One thing that stands out for me here is Troy's effortless playing and how certain notes are allowed to "hang" in space/time, which contributes to both effortlessness of the playing as well adding to the beauty of this almost ballad song, nice work here!
Thanks for the kind words. I really do appreciate them, but I just tried to do my best to capture and, humbly, recreate this epic bass-line.
No one nails these riffs like you. My routine is hit the tabs, then watch you play it!! Well done. Your Name should be Geddy Paul Jones :)
Raymond Santini geddy paul butler
Entwhistle
Bruce
@@chuckduchamp7560 No doubt "thunder fingers" really revolutionized on how the bass can be utilized in rock music!
Some of the finest bass lines anywhere. Ever!
I'd have to agree.
Just wow. That was jaw droppingly outstanding and beautiful. I closed my eyes and listened and if i didnt know any better i would have thought JPJ was in the house. Very well done.
I've listened to this song for 25 years and yesterday this bass riff sunk in. Holy Christ John Paul Jones. Thank you.
I can see by how you are playing this that I have been looking at the wrong tab. great work. I hope I can learn to make it look this effortless.
I hope it helps. Practice and repetition is what it takes to create the illusion of effortlessness.
Can you do the Lemon Song? Pretty please. Your bass should sound epic in that song for sure.
JPJ crafted some of the most melodic bass lines. Great choice for covers. Ramble On is another gem. Love your treatment on this Zep classic.
True masterpiece of bass parts.
Nice job, you nailed it!
Jeez, thanks a lot.
So sweet. It's like you dipped those strings in wild honey, restrung and played.
Oh, these unearthed gems.
Thank you, Professor.
Amazing. Thanks for sharing with us.
Constantine Isslamow Thanks.
+TJH3113 Thank you for blowing my mind! ....and thanks Constantine for sharing as well! I am an old man....rediscovering my bass after living on it for years from 79-83.... you both have inspired me....and made my reentry easier.
All covers I see by you are great but the smoothness during the guitar solo…. Just wow.
Thanks so much.
I've been playing about40 years in the old days I would wear albums out going over and over each part to get it just right, thank you for your help, watching you play not only makes it easier. But it's a joy to watch, your such a Great bassist
Same here, Eddie! I'm so happy to hear that you find some of the videos helpful... though you probably don't need all that much help. Take care!
I just read that it was this Zep song that inspired Geddy to pick up the bass. JPJ was a master at crafting bass lines that were both melodic and intrigal to the song. Great cover Troy!
I've heard a lot about that last interview of Geddy (I'm assuming it's the same one) and should really check it out. Thanks!
One of the most organic bass lines by Mr Jones, well done!
Definitely. Thank you.
Haven't checked in for a while, Troy, and I haven't seen this vid before. The thing that strikes me most here is not how well you've worked the bass line out or how well you (personally) play the part - by now those are just the norm (if you've posted it online then you're happy with it, therefore it's pretty much nailed). No, what strikes me is how much I DON'T know a song which I've been listening to for years. I've always been able to pick out the various parts of a song in my mind whilst listening to it and that is a nice ability to have - but being able to clearly SEE one element of that song being played is something else entirely. Having people congratulate you on a job well done is great (and your videos are a job well done) - having people better appreciate the artist who's work you are highlighting is far better ... and for me that's what you've achieved here. Thank you.
Welcome back. Thanks for the kind words and for the biggest compliment of all - I'm always delighted to hear when someone has a deeper appreciation for a song (or a bass-line) after watching one of my videos. Thank you once again Mike.
Very well-done, as always.
This and the Lemon Song were the two pieces that drew my attention to the bass guitar, nearly 45 years ago. I couldn't wait for these two songs to come around on the cassette that I nearly played to death, so that I could listen to JPJ. Truly a study in bass guitar.
Thanks. I may try and get to the Lemon Song one day...I'm not looking forward to it one bit though.
:)
Me too!
Dude man, that was seriously so great. Like buttery smooth and all of the JPJ groove!
Jacques Groulx-Couture Thanks a lot.
Bassist get no love. Or rather bassists only get love from other bassists. And that's all we need.
True.
Probably my favorite work of JPJ and well done hre
Seldom at a loss for words, so I will drop this one word here...Outstanding!
Thanks!
I been working on this for about a half hour and got about half so far. You are an amazing bass player. Thank you so much for this, forever in your debt.
Awesome! I'm glad it was helpful. It was my pleasure.
Probably one of the best bass lines of Led Zepp. It is singing along. Excellent demonstration
So smoothly done.
Thank you.
What a beautiful song made by the bass line! You play it so smoothly and the j sounds so rich. cheers
I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Thanks for bringing this Led Zeppelin song back to memory. I never tried this bassline, but it's never too late. I can now see how it should be played.
ThunderBassist Jay My pleasure. Thanks for checking it out.
J.P.J... Underrated Beast
Epic, well done. Always enjoy your stuff. This is the first non-XTC bass cover Ive watched. Thanks for this and for all.
Thank you very much.
An iconic bass line, and you nailed it.
Thank you Lawrence.
Silky smooth!
I've always loved this baseline, so enjoyable to see you playing it, thank you!
Glad you liked it! Thanks Ned.
Very nice... almost verbatim for how I play it. I do some walking in the end though, like the album. I'll tell you what... you've definitely caught my ear and respect as a fellow bassist... well done!
Wow. You're killing it!
back again to listen, your tone kills on this one!
Thank you very much, Mike!
Always enjoy your covers, Mr Hughes. Excellent.
TPBass1224 Thank you.
Troy once again many thanks for sharing your inspirational skills. I never thought I could play this song (or the others I learned from you) but studying your videos makes it possible.
Aw, thank you very much and I'm so glad that you find the videos helpful. If I could do more, I would.
Quality over quantity my friend. I've studied your Fairies Wear Boots and War Pigs videos for a couple of years now. There's so much to them besides just learning the song. There's your selection of tone, note delivery, technique - I pick up something new single every time. And you probably hear that all the time but your videos really matter to those of us who aspire to some day play like you.
I thought this was going to be a tutorial on what not to do on bass covers. I watched the whole thing thinking this is what a Bass cover should be.
Aw, thanks for the very kind words.
silky smooth
Great cover as always. Interesting thing about JP Jones. I have a lampoon series called "Bass Players in the Wrong Band" where I play in someone's style in a band where it's completely inappropriate. (It's pretty funny). But I could never parody JP Jones because he is such a chameleon -- so well versed that he fits every styles he plays -- heavy, funky, tight, loose, simple, complex. He does it all. The man is a great musician. You nailed this one, as well as the tone!
Thank you, Nelson. I checked out a couple of those videos and they are really cool!
Very well done Troy. Great tone as well. A song every bass player should learn at one time.
IRONSTORM4 Yea he always has amazing tone!
IRONSTORM4 Thanks a lot.
Love your covers brother. The tone, articulation and attention to subtle detail is to be commended. Bravo.
Thanks a lot.
More then welcome my friend. Just wish I had a friend near by that played as good as you that I could collaborate with. My music would definitely jump in quality. But when you have to do it all yourself it is what it is, hanging on your limitations.
Beautiful work as always.... I salute you Sir
The whole this is amazing but your playing during the solo is KILLER! Thanks so much for helping me learn this.
Thanks Larry, I hope you find it helpful.
If I see your name and the masks, then I know that the songs is played excellent.
Haha.
Your tone is glorious!
Awesome You the man. Led Zeppelin classic, You made its brilliants shine. You are going to go down in history as a UA-cam bass cover icon
Keith Wisbar Thanks a lot. I'm going down alright.
That’s a beautiful Jazz. Love your ghost notes/muting. Nice effort.
Thank you very much Todd.
Nice, smooth playing and as always the sound is set up just right.
Love the beautifully played songs my friend .. excellent thanks for the videos your practice shows you kick ass
Thank you very much.
Gorgeous rendition of one of the most beautifully bad a** bass lines ever written. Your playing is consistently stunning.
Carolyn Gutierrez Thanks.
Excellent Troy! Nice classic melodic bass line from one of my all time favorite bands.

Thank you very much.
Sounds great. Thumbs way up...Lloyd.
Quite excellent work again… Thank you Sir
Thank you.
Thanks again for doing this man! You’re an Outstanding Bass Ninja😎
Thanks for the kind words.
Really nice playing Troy. This is one of my top 5 favorite players. You really nail the tone an feel of the song. As you know John (Baldwin) Paul Jones never played anything the same way twice. You took that and really play some tasty fills ect. I'm obviously going through your catalog by choice. If you wanted to throw a minute after any song you choose I wouldn't complain a bit(ala Excitable Boy). Lol. The 2 things a player needs to be capable I think is chops and taste. You got both in spades. This shows that. Thanks for posting.
Chris.
Thanks Chris. I was never a big Zeppelin fan, but I know many people love them. And, you're right, JPJ rarely played the same thing twice, but that's not the entire reason i don't care for them... haha. Take care.
Your playing style has helped me, thanks.
One of my favorite bass lines by Zeppelin. Very challenging part , you can really get in touch with JPJ on this one. Great job brother 👍
Thanks a lot!
Fantastic job ! Now to spend hours trying to nail it.
Thank you! You can do it!
da te imparo sempre di piu'....grazie . Number one
E, da te, imparo sempre più l'umiltà. Grazie per le parole molto gentili, amico mio.
Outstanding

I like the way you choose challenging songs to cover. I've seen a few of your other videos. Nice job. The creepy masks in the background give me the willies though.
