    UA-cam is like Christmas Morning. A video about recovering dining room chairs popped up and after that -- serendipitously -- your video on Velvet. This is fascinating and you are an excellent teacher. Sewing with velvet has always been the bane of my existence so I cannot fathom putting it on furniture. You have taught me things about velvet one could only decipher after years of experience. Thank you for sharing your very valuable knowledge. Cheers from New York.

    This video was excellent. Unfortunately. I am a day late and dollar short. I have spent money and cut some luxurious velvet, and tried to sew it to a different fabric weight. Only to tear up the pieces. It was my fault, I tried to pair outdoor fabric with velvet. Rookie Mistake. Please please keep creating excellent content. Do Not stop! We appreciate you!

    Nice job, some of the older style velvets can be a headache to work with. Cotton backed velvets can be steamed to eliminate the odd wrinkle, the cotton shrinks and tightens the velvet.

      I have a velvet chaise I'm attempting to reupholster. It may not be considered traditional velvet because it's not as shiny, so maybe it's velour. Anyway, there are areas where the furry surface rubbed off. I suggest watching another of Aimee's videos on fabric from April 2021.

    Hi Aimee, I did view your previous recent video and liked, but didn't comment, but I will. I also Liked this one and will view this one in full later today so I will be caught-up. Interesting that you chose to show how to use velvet on a Victorian Bench seat as that is what I plan to attempt in the very near future. I am still a little hesitant on the attempt as I want to do it right especially since it's an antique. I always enjoy listening to your tutorials on upholstery and it would be nice to be able to attend one of your classes, but Nova Scotia is a long ways from Colorado. Have a Great Day!!

    This very helpful and lovely sofa. Can I ask which direction your inside arms are laying. I've had to run my back piece sideways and now having trouble working out which way round to put the piece running inside the arm over the top to the edge of the rolled arm. Seems like every light that is different makes me want to have it a different way.

    I revived a headboard once with the nap to the right and it looked very rich and nice from the right and washed out and bad from the left. I was not happy about that.And leaning against the board with the nap to the side causes a lot of tear if the direction is to the side. What are your thoughts Scott that?

    • @ArtisanUpholsteryStudio

      Well, the internet is the absolute worst place to shop for fabric. You have to be able to feel it. I’ve made many costly errors buying fabric online that I thought would be great, but was terrible in person. So, if you have a fabric store or home decor shop (or even a home-based upholstery shop 😜) in your town, stop in and see what they have. Especially with velvet, which can look very different in person than it does online.

I know it won't look right and that is not what your profession is into, but did people always reupholster a full sofa to fix a cigarette burn or similar small hole? Thank you.

    I am trying to sew velvet in double welt and its just been really hard first it was the size of rope then i had to steam it to take bends or wrinkles out now its lining it up and sewing it straight. Because it's stretchy it goes off line and i end up with bumps in the welts and looks awful. I can't find anything on this. Anyone know a video i can't watch in this?

      Hey thanks for the like. The sofa I am reupholstering the seat is more than 140 cm 55 inches wide so is wider than the roll of fabric . I was thinking of running the velvet side to side and matching the other sections like you did in the video. Is this a real no no the nap will be running sideways instead of down but is the only way to cover the seat in one section. What do you think ?? 😃

    • @ArtisanUpholsteryStudio
      @ArtisanUpholsteryStudio  3 роки тому +1

      Definitely do that. You don’t want seams on velvet. There is nothing wrong with the nap going sideways as long as it all “looks” the same.

      @ArtisanUpholsteryStudio  3 роки тому

      I don’t know what that is

    • @annadavis3187
      @annadavis3187 3 роки тому

      Penne velvet? Or broadcloth? is a type of crushed velvet where the pile has been flattenned in the same direction all over. In the large majority of cases these velvets are stretchy, either because they contain elastane, or because their base is knitted and not woven. They are generally made out of polyester. Broadcloth is a medium-weight, unbalanced plain-weave fabric with fine ribs. Broadcloth is woven tightly, resulting in its characteristic luster.

      Sometimes velvet is easy to clean and sometimes not. It depends on the fabric. Furniture manufacturers are misleading, so best to buy a good vintage sofa and choose your own fabric with Fibreguard.
