How to clean velvet Upholstery and fabric. In this cleaning tutorial, Carl, a certified fabric specialist who runs training courses in fabric cleaning shows you how to clean velvet upholstery using this chair to teach you how to clean velvet but this method will work on any velvet fabric such as velvet jackets or shoes. Velvet is a luxurious fiber but it is notoriously difficult to keep clean and stains easily. Velvet is also water sensitive and clumps under moisture meaning that stains need to be removed using special techniques such as dry brushing to open the velvet pile - grooming is essential and Carl shows you how to dry and groom your velvet so that it retains its soft hand and luxury feel.
TO CLEAN YOUR VELVET UPHOLSTERY OR FABRIC YOU WILL NEED:
    1. A stiff brush or nail brush - these are my favourite type - amzn.to/3m5mSSW
    2. A soft brush
    3. A blunt knife or butter knife
    4. A duck billed scissors
    5. A spray bottle
    6. Rubbing Alcohol
    7. Dish soap or mild detergent
    8. A hair dryer
    9. Cotton towels - CLEAN ONES!
Following the instructions in the video will allow you to clean your velvet upholstery and fabrics without causing damage or clumping. The key is to gently groom the velvet and not to overwork the pile as this will cause damage; this is especially important when cleaning velvet shoes or cleaning velvet jackets.
If you want to clean velvet or velour car seats you may need to adjust your method slightly: Velour car seats will hold quite a lot of contact grease soiling so to clean them properly you may need to use rubbing alcohol to help break down the soil before using moisture - but test an area to be sure. A lot of auto interiors have velour door panels, arm rests and seats and they are quite east to clean - the method to clean car velour seats is exactly the same as normal velvet cleaning, though car seats are always synthetic and hard wearing so will clean up really well using the method in the video.
The tutorial will also teach you how to clean velvet headboards, how to clean velvet sofa chairs, and how to clean a velvet bed boards among many other types of velvet such as velvet shoes, velvet jackets, and velvet clothes.

You are a total gem! I cannot tell you how happy you've made me. I bought brand new velvet sofas for a newly renovated house I moved into a few weeks ago. But I also offered to look after a dog for relatives who were in a last minute bind finding dog care a few days before their holiday. The adorable, but naughty, dog climbed the sofas and slobbered on them. I asked a really highly rated professional cleaning company to take a look and they declined the job because of the velvet. My next stop was you and after 3 solid hours of carefully following your step-by-step guide, they're back to new!! I genuinely can't thank you enough.

Ok for the dog odour, you’re gunna need to deal with pet greases - I’d advocate using this method first, then using the dry cleaning method in my dry cleaning tutorial - rubbing alcohol has deodorising properties and will also break down the pet grease/oils. It’ll take a while but it should work!

Modal is viscose, and cotton is well, cotton; both are cellulose fibers that dont like being wet! I'd test both methods in a hidden area but I suspect the dry cleaning method is the safest bet - the trick as always is the dry soil removal!

The pile is worn to where it has more of a sheen, more crushed velvet look now, not like your chair in this demo. I was changing printer ink cartridge and stupidly put it on the couch, and ink came out onto the cushions. I think they are down filled. This was about 10 years ago now. I just flipped the cushion, but would like to try to get it out, I didn't try then, too scared. Will this work?

I started immediately, I did 2 settees and a chair and they’ve come up fantastic. They were so grubby, dull and the velvet had gone flat that I was on for buying new furniture. Your advise has brought it all back to life, the colour has come back and the velvet has lifted. I was really surprised how little washing up liquid you need to get a great result easily , also it dried really quickly.I only used washing up liquid and water. As you say, too much detergent is too much froth and so too much stays in the velvet weighing it down and you can’t get it out.... that was the problem I had before seeing your video , I was using too much soap, too much water and too much rubbing and knocking the life out of the velvet. I spilt a couple of drops of tea on it last night.
