How to fit the clips on a CV boot

  • I'm currently teaching 'Transmission & Drive Trains' so have made a start putting a few videos in the 'can' covering some transmission basics.
    This video covers the simple, though often neglected, task of fitting the metal retaining bands to both CV & Tripod joint boots. Some use cable ties as a last resort, these just don't provide the clamping force needed and are not suitable.
    So, here's the right way of fitting these clips...
    Any questions then please add them to the comments below & I'll get back to you just as soon as I can.
    Andy Mechanic!

    Best video I've seen, specially bending over and holding the handle. If you don't know that, the tire slides back unnoticed. You then have a clamp band that is too loose and you can start again and a clamp band wasted. Thanks Andy

    ....An excellent Vid Andy ... when I did my apprenticeship we were taught to first determine the correct direction of rotation of the driveshaft (ie left side or right side of vehicle) and then fit the strap so that when we folded the tang over it would be less likely to catch, snag or undo itself on when rotating in the forward DoR ... of course this makes no difference if the vehicle reverses !! Cheers ...

    I actually bought one of these tools to reband the CV joint boots on my Honda Element. Used it on both inboard and outboard boots but couldn't get enough tension on the outboard CV boot because I was reinstalling the OEM thermoplastic boot and it leaked. The inboard CV boot also OEM but made of neoprene rubber and didn't leak. Switched over to the "ear" type bands because you can get more tension and they are about 25% wider.

    Holy shit Andy - very old video mate. Been spannering since I was a teen and to my shame I didn't actually know how to use this tool - I always used the other kind of clips but I have had some bad luck with the batch I was using recently so I'm switching to this type of clip. Thanks for taking the time to show us n00bs.

    The better quality clamps used on Genuine Parts are normally Oetiker Clamps, and require a different tool and a torque wrench...

    I don't think I've ever seen that style of band before! The ones I've used have all been the sort that have notches you use to set the band preload, then use a special pair of crimping pliers to tighten down an extrusion in the band. The same style tends to be OE equipment for boot seals on most stuff I see here in the States. :)

    • @AndyMechanic
      @AndyMechanic  8 років тому +1

      +rhkips I know the ones. We have them as OE fitment but can't buy them here in NZ so it's become the 'norm' to use the type I had in the video.

    How is the boot supposed the seal the joint if there is a big groove in the axle? I mean the boot is round and the sealing surface is not.

  • @Badgertronix

    I've had some very ugly, clicky CV joints pass a WOF in the past! I get boot kits with clips that don't need a special tool, seem to work well. nice vid

    • @AndyMechanic
      @AndyMechanic  8 років тому +1

      +Badgertronix It's crazy here in NZ. The condition of a CV joint is not considered in a a WoF inspection, despite it been a critical part of the drive train and can affect steering if it collapses....NZ regs????
      In the UK, it would be an MOT fail.

    Do you think you might be able to tell me why the CV boot keeps popping off my CV joint? I got a brand new one from Auto Zone twice and both times immediately after being installed, the boot popped off. Auto Zone said the rings come pre-tightened.

    • @AndyMechanic
      @AndyMechanic  6 років тому +1

      Hi Angela, well, every CV boot I have installed you fit the retaining clips last & they have to be tightened as per the video. It wouldn't be possible to have pretensioned retaining clips. I suggest you take the car to a proper garage!

    Is there anything wrong with using jubilee clips (worm drive clips) like you find on radiator/heater hoses?

    • @AndyMechanic
      @AndyMechanic  5 років тому +1

      They'd work for sure but remember that drive shaft rotates at Wheel speed. The worm drive clips are unbalanced - weighted where the drive is. At higher speeds this would probably cause a vibration. If it's a slow speed vehicle like an ATV then no problem using them but on a car? I'd suggest not.
      Cheers Andy

      +Richard D So true & terrible too. Did you know that the condition of the CV joint is also exempt from the NZ warrant...despite the fact that when they fail it can affect steering and cause the driver to loose control of the car!
      The NZ Government would be better suited running a circus!
