  • In areas like mine with deer over-population it can be very difficult to grow a flower or vegetable garden. Deer will eat your plants while you sleep, and they are not necessarily stopped by fences, sprays, scents or other tactics. I have found a solution which works very well, however. The "scarecrow" motion-activated sprayers are an inexpensive tactic to keep deer away, as well as rabbits, groundhogs, squirrels, cats, dogs and other creatures. In this video I'll demonstrate how they work.

Awesome video John, originally found your channel looking for tile installation tips. I dont have a deer problem but about 6 different neighbor cats that use my lawn as their litter box. Ive been so pissed at times I considered an airsoft gun, but decided against it because I dont want to hurt them. We tried ultra sonic pest repellant devices but they didnt work. The coyote urine or other repellant would be a huge cost here because it rains 8 months of the year. I think ill try one of these.

This will definitely work on cats! Since they dislike water so much, they won't be back after the first spray. However, cats are smarter than deer, so you'll need to be clever about placement of the sprayer and perhaps move it to a slightly different spot from time to time.

Deer will feed starting at dusk and going through the night. So, unless you have a night vision scope to shoot in the dark and have friends who will man the watchtower in shifts, I think you'll be fighting a losing battle. Most states also have hunting laws to forbid this practice and it wouldn't be practical in suburban or urban areas.

This is a terrific invention. It's rare to find a pest deterrent of any kind that is also completely humane. Thanks for sharing the information.

Dam that's a nice size yard you got there. I'd plan massive Paw Paw around the property. They have diesel taste which will kill the deer so generally they stay away from it. A young buck might ram down a young tree, just enclose it with barb or chicken wires. Paw paw is really tasty too.

I built a double fence with about 36” between them. The deer are afraid of jumping the outer as they would land on the inner.

Fences can work for a period, but they have limitations. They can be very expensive to do large areas, they may not be desirable as far as looks in many situations, and they can be broken or bypassed. Their effectiveness will also depend on how much deer pressure you have in your area. I had a family member many years ago who paid an exorbitant fee to install 7 foot tall deer fencing to enclose his back yard. A week or two later he had his first deer inside the fence, who managed to make the 7 foot jump. While trying to corral the deer toward an exit, the deer got agitated and ran full speed at the fence. She didn't try to jump but went hooves-first into the fence, and sliced a hole right through the center! After that was patched, he found a fawn who had managed to dig under the fence. Time eventually took it's toll on the fence and I think he finally just tore it down and gave up.
