- Natural edges are the the best way to separate the lawn from mulch beds and look absolutely fantastic when done correctly! Here is how I do it using a cheap and simple tool!

When I was a young teenager. My dad would ask me to do some yardwork. Dad, you want me to do what? You have to be kidding! At 70 I enjoy the yardwork. It's relaxing.
Happy men are those that have learned to enjoy hard work due to its high reward.
Same here! Funny how that is.
It's relaxing bc it's a mindless task in which you see instant results for your work.
Nice job!
I love that you pat the grass when talking :)
I hated yard work when I was younger. My parents had to pay me to mow the lawn. I actually think my family took bets to see if I was going to do my own yard work or hire someone when I bought my 1st house. 😂 I actually like doing yard work & taking care of my flowers. It is relaxing, it took me 30 yrs. 😊 ✌💙🌻
Absolutely terrific video! I am a widow, and have been struggling with my yard for years. My husband used to take care of it, and I always did the flowerbeds, but he always took care of the edges. I still have not conquered the string trimmer, but I’m working on it, you’re a great communicator and I so appreciate this video. My yard has Hope and so do I.!!
An added benefit, is that you can use the pulled out grass, that has grown within the bed itself, to fill in holes and gaps in your lawn, wherever required.
Excellent video! I've been doing my beds this way for about 12 years. People always ask me how to do it. Now I will refer them to your videos. Like you said, my beds have not migrated into the yard. Looks AWESOME! 💯🤙🏼
I’m a single woman who has to do my own yard so this is an awesome tip! Love the curved shape.
Get a man

Can't beat the ole tried and true half moon edger!. My Grandma taught me how to do this 60 years ago and it still works great today....
I find it best to edge the lawn after a good rainfall as it makes it so much easier.
I started using this method last year. Love the look and cuts the spread of grass into the flower beds by 85 to 90 Percent. Thanks for the tip...
I have been watching many videos on garden beds and edging since, with my new house, I inherited about 15 small circular beds 😢. Am ready to buy the half moon edger BUT I just wanted to THANK YOU for the tip on using the weed wacker about “…if your motor spins clockwise, walk this way…” . In all the years I’ve used a wacker I’ve NEVER even thought of that. Was always upset with grass being thrown into flower beds.
Your tip on purchasing a half moon edger was helpful. I have two areas by the shed that need to be edged as a future project but for now I'll be planting on my land. Your edging was very well done very clean & neat really perfect.
Keep making vids brother. You have the perfect personality to really take off...
This is pretty scary. I was thinking JUST YESTERDAY that I needed to redo my beds and buy new edging. Can't really afford it at this time because of a kitchen remodel and lo and behold....your video pops up today.😳😁 Thank you for showing how to do a beautiful edged bed without having to buy edging and your work is absolutely beautiful!😍
Thank you! They’re always listening to us 🤪
So awesome to see a young guy doing this by hand!!!! You give me hope. Where I live in NC I cannot even find a teenager to PAY to come use my 2 mowers to mow one acre (my own son stopped doing because "he doesn't like to sweat"). I'm 70 and still weeding by hand and doing all my landscaping & mowing.
Where in nc I’ll come do it
It looks great! I'm going to buy one of those half moon shovels! At 112 pounds I can't even jump on a shovel to get it go in! I'm sure the neighbors all get a laugh watching me get anything done out there. We have river rock. Beautiful when I hired it done, not too pretty right now.
Yes, this is also my problem! Not weighing enough to get the darn shovel to go anywhere! I imagine my soil could use some amendments too.
I’ve been doing exactly what you have going on for the last 23 years. My neighbors always compliment me on my yard. I’m left handed so running the string trimmer is a little different. Good video!
That looks amazing! I'll be doing this as soon as the weather cooperates. Thank you so much for the edging tips! 👍
Thanks for the video I have a new yard person trying to show him what I am looking for. Hope they can see from the video what I need. Wish me luck 😊
Hahaha! I love it. I always love to look back at my finished edges that way too!
I'll be taking up on these pointers!!! I have always found edging so hard to prefect but this seems so much easier..
A nice clean edge makes all the difference!!
Thanks for this vid and mentioning Bermuda. It air prunes the roots, so Bermuda sends out runners. I still only need to pull them about once a year. 4” is a helpful depth.
Beautiful job!! Nothing like a greatly manicured lawn and garden beds!! You are a ROCKSTAR 🌟!!
I can tell that you enjoy what you do I like them deep crisp edges too
Good info especially the edger tool. I actually like that the bed increases a bit each year to compensate for the shrub growth
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, CRISP EDGES, GREAT VIDEO, THANKS!
🙂🌱🙂🌱🙂🌱🙂🌱🙂🌱🙂🌱🙂
Thank you for posting. I bought the tool but used it wrong. I couldn't figure out why my edges wasn't sharp. I didn't want to hurt the grass so I did it in the opposite direction. I came back and watch your video and figure out press against the grass.... It looks awesome now.
a clean edge looks so nice.. and something to think about.. you will never see the shape of a bed you will always see the shape of the lawn.. so think of your lawn as a carpet and make it a pleasing shape, the bed will be what ever shape is left over.. sometimes people cut their beds into star shapes and half moons.. which just makes cutting the lawn harder to do.. and all you see is the weird shape of your lawn.. a nice soft flowing shape like you showed makes the lawn look nice and the beds too
That looks amazing! This is exactly what I have been wanting to do at my house! Thank you for the tips.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
Dude! Your stuff is
Extra KRISPY! Looks so good!
I am doing my own trenching this season.....!
Nothing beats an edge like this! I just yesterday filmed 2 new videos edging new beds at my new house. Tight!
Yaaaaaaasssssss!!!@@TheLawnWhisperer
Looks fantastic. I like it so much better than ANY type of edging. Bricks, rocks, whatever, always get grass and weeds growing in or over them and it's hard to get out. Thanks for showing how it's done.
If you kick the back of the shovel, or half-moon, rather than prying back on the handle will give you an even sharper edge. When you pry, you arerounding off the top of the edge.
I love how you really love the job. makes me love it to. Keep the passion
Nice, I am going to try this method on the new grass in my backyard. initially I was gonna putting metal edge around my grass but I think this will look much cleaner.
Looks great! I love that he's so stoked about his edge.
Im a new home owner. Spring is here. Thank you.
Looking good, brotha! Those edges are extra crisp! It is so satisfying cleaning up the beds.
That looks great! Thank you so much for sharing and giving me the confidence to know I can do that, too. I really liked seeing the pleasure you took in a job well done 👍
So that how you get the perfect edge. I love this.
Great job.....my goal is to make my mulch bed and lawn edge look as good as yours did on the video. Thank you for your expertise..
I live in central Texas, I miss fescue grass and I miss live edge beds. I was a horticulturalists in both Virginia and Texas. Can’t wait to move home to Virginia. If I see another flag stone, or plastic edging I’m going to get sick. Great video!
Thank you. I subscribed to your channel. Very good information. I just retired so I’m going to try this on a small section until I get the hang of it then I’ll do the clean up on the front yard.
Nice! Love it
Crisp, clean and tighhhhhtttttt. Nicely done brother. Great video....as always !
This guy is fantastic at explains things.
Thank you so much! I’m trying to do this myself for the first time in my life 😅 this helped!
I remember your past video on your sharp edging :) thank you for making a new one and detailed explanation! awesome!
Thanks for this. Love this look, never knew how to achieve it.
Oh My Goodness. Already on the hunt for a Halfmoon Edger from my local hardware store. Thanks for the tip. Subscribed & looking forward to more Vids. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia ; )
OMG! First watch. Here in the UK we are lawn obsessed! So many useful tips. Looks amazing! Inspired! Thank You! Subscribed and looking forward to so much more content.
Depending on how much your mower deck hangs over, the weight of your mower, and soil moisture they all contribute to the collapse of the berm wall. But, it looks nice for sure.
That's what happened to mine after the first cut
Great video!!! I hope you show it after the flowers and mulch.
That's how i do my edges too! Love my half moon tool.
Brooooo. Thank you! I really appreciate this video. I rent a house and want to keep the gardens nice (the older Italian lady who passed on and who’s family sold it to my landlord has it blooming year round in the front AND back yards) and tidy! Do you have videos about fixing a patchy lawn? Our landlord has let it get weedy and patchy and I want it to be grassy instead. ❤
Brooooooo. Thanks for the good words! Glad you are keeping things nice! I do have several videos on fixing a patchy lawn. Where are you located? Grass type will dictate a lot of how you go about fixing it
That's how I do all my bed edges. I love curves.
Mary Crowley, watching here inn Southern Ireland great video, the edges are looking almost as good as yourself👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Good video! I'm gonna get rid of my rocks and pavers!
Great video. I went out and bought $100’s of dollars in blocks and now I hate them. I’ll be giving them away cause idk what to do with all of them, now that I want to edge all my gardens. Thank you for the great tutorial
Great work. Just the instructions I was looking for👍🏴🏴🏴
Thank you for this video. Exactly the Info I was looking for.
So satisfying! I hope I actually attempt to do mine 😊
Marking your spade is a great tip!
Great job i personally have concrete decorative curbing around my garden beds but this is a cool idea. Unfortunately here in Florida the ground (soil) is not as good where you live digging or shoveling here is difficult in many areas do to rocks , sea shells ect and the grass sucks gross like snake.
I use the same method. Just have to watch the mower if you drop the wheel in.... scalp! 😄
Just stumbled on your video. Love it! “Testing my pullout game” was hilarious.
Well done young man, well done.
I’ve never been able to go to deep but thanks for the advice
Same 😅
If yardwork were Game of Thrones, you would have been selected for the Nights Watch guarding the Wall. Lol
This is an awesome comment 😂
Super dope comment…🔥🔥🔥
Worth the effort in the end. It does look good.
Crispy....the best landscaping term EVER
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and time
I got my half moon edger in great condition at Goodwill for less than 5$!
Chef's kiss!
This is perfect . Thank you and for free . Minis tools ect . I'm going to check your videos on how to Make a straight line to make a flower bed outlinr in to turf that's already there
I like staking the ends and using string or 550 cord. You can spray the line with paint after that.
WOWZA THAT DOES LOOKS GOOD . Thank you. Great video.
That was soo dang satisfying!!
Now it’s my turn! Zowser !!
Thanks!!
“Testing my pull-out game” 🤣🤣🤣
Well done!... Thank you!
My half moon seems to hit a lot of rocks, clay or tree roots that are in the bed. Tract home, don't think they put in much or any top soil when they threw down the bermuda sod. I have a power edger and drop the blade as low as it goes. Not a 4' depth tho.
Love this! My spatial reasoning gives me nightmares when I see how pacers and things shift and sink with time.
Only issue I am wondering how you would deal with is mulch. I guess if you had rocks you could use blower after trimming grass back flush with the wall each time, but what if you have mulch? Love this though!
Best ever explained
Nice tips. Hope this works well with St Augustine grass.
I’m not sure, I’ve never tried it. It might spread too aggressively for this, you’ll have to let me know
It is gorgeous!
@1:50 I can imagine his neighbor watching from afar thinking “why is he bent over talking to the ground?” 😂
8:15 so satisfying 👍🏼
right at this frame, love it
it looks very very good
Moonwalking that edge 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
what a good edging video.
You can buy a stihl edger for like 350-$400 it will give you the exact same look and allows you to maintain it throughout the year. Just something to think about.
This half moon edger costs like 20 bucks
When weedwacking the fine edge in the future, what is a good way to prevent that grass from going into the nicely mulched bed?
i have one of those edges, i love it!
Old landscaper’s trick. Take your edger/string trimmer (they are not that expensive) and cut the edge deep (you want to sever any grass runners so your herbicide does not translocate across the edge line). On a non windy day spray the weeds and grass growing on the bed side with Round Up. Mulch the bed. Wait two weeks before planting additional plants. Round Up breaks down in two weeks. Across the summer use the same technique. Lot less effort with great results.
I like the results of this deep edge though. This can’t be achieved with a string trimmer alone
Great video!❤ Thx!😊
This will solve my "look" issue. Thanks. Wondering how you mow the lawn close to the wall. Would worry about the wheels of the mower falling into the groove and cutting the grass at the edge too low. I suppose one could just mow along the line a few inches away from the wall and then use the edger to get the wall grass like you did in this vid.
Looks great Justin. I need to get out and redo mine soon. 😁🔥👊
Currently 431 comments and not a single one talking about the “pull-out game” comment… I’m impressed :)
Testing my pull out game is always a dangerous game
Looks great! I just spend half the day replicating that on my front yard mulch bed-looks great! I’ve always struggled keeping tight lines and keeping the mulch from washing into the yard.
Do you run your mulch right up the the edge or keep a gap at the “dirt wall”. Seems like the grass might still try to grow into the mulch so I’ll probably keep a gap.
I run the mulch to the bottom of that wall so there’s still the gap there! Looks cleaner and stays cleaner I think!
Nice work! Great tips ❤Mine needs a serious redo 8:35
i wish I could manage the trimmer as you - a pro does 😅
"testing my pull-out game" hahaha, no-one else seems to have picked up on this double-entendre 😆😂
😜😎
You are excellent man. Love your work
Super Job. Thanks 👍
Very nice and neat!
