Jess' ad transitions are absolutely awesome -- get me everytime!
If she gets me with the transition i like the video
A freakin pro, haha
I look forward to this every time
Did not see that coming lol!
I was ready for it and it still 100% got me
Every time Jess appears in the video, you know a smooth transition to the next squarespace ad is coming up 🤣 love it!
This one made me literally laugh out loud
I was digging the tomato interlude.
I wait for it now!!
all business
That squarespace intro by Jess was smooth 👍😂
Box corners really improves the look of the house in my opinion. Great work Scott. Thanks for sharing!
Base isolation is considered one of the most effective ways to protect a building during an earthquake. However, did you know that adding dampers to the system can improve performance?
Lol
Scott I really appreciate you showing how to to the scribers, I am a carpenter from the US and I have always struggled with scribers and I think this video will help with that
Happy to help
Although moving to the South Island has meant no Paerau or Cameron, what it has given birth to is a new fan favourite - Jess's Segues!
I'm a fan of the box corners too, the corners of my weatherboards look shagged and could do with exactly this, the question is whether I have the skills *probably not, but i'll give it a go
The skill question is one I'm wrestling with as well. I may ask around for some quotes.
I'd never seen anyone fix weatherboards, thanks for the vid now I know what to do about our own!
Anyone else treat Scott's vids as a form of meditiation? Good for the soul~~👍👍👍
This just in; if you find yourself going in circles you need to abandon circle space and head over to square space.
So glad to see corners ran over that ugly flashing. Most siding here is always done with different colour trim to make the house look more bold.
For your weatherboards could you do what we do with our engineered wood? We leave a 5/16" gap for expansion and contraction and have a flat colour matched aluminium flashing behind it for water run off. The boards don't touch and can't swell, winds get into those open ends and drive the moisture out
Your surprise tomatoes remind me of a friend who got some “fertiliser” from a certain ‘treatment’ facility and over 500 tomato plants popped up in their flower gardens!! Love your posts.
Jess's sneaky adverts crack me up
The best ad transitions in the biz, pay her moar! :-D
Thanks for another great video. As an expat New Zealander your videos and their vibe give me a nice connection back home.
Around here, box corners are really common. The difference is that we usually put the box corners on before the weatherboards, and the weatherboards butt into the corner trim. Caulking and/or a rain screen gap keeps everything healthy.
The joys of home ownership! You get to redo 50 years of someone else's style, short cuts and screw ups! You two are a pleasure to watch. Get after it!

The box corners look good. I also loved the view of the hills . Jess & you have chosen a lovely part of NZ. I love seeing your videos SBC.😎
Love the sound of your high speed nailing
that cheeky ad read
Here in B.C., particularly the South Coast and Vancouver Island, a common phrase explaining how rainy it is here; "It only rains twice a week; 3 days the 1st time, 4 days the 2nd".
A SBC vid to start the morning, always enjoy them regardless of the topic 👍 Best of luck with your renovation Scott, it’s an incredibly rewarding process!
Cheers mate 🙂
That might have been the smoothest ad transition ever. Damn. I'm not even mad.
The scribe cut was very satisfying to watch. Love your videos man!
I enjoy watching your episodes🤙 You should print a T Shirt with " Hi , Scott Brown Here" & " No Pensil Marks" Very Pro🤙 Keep filming them episodes Buddy, very usefull info all day👌
And one more tip. EVERDURE EPOXY TIMBER SEALER. INTERNATIONAL EPIGLASS is a 2 part timber sealer. it soaks into the timber, and once set it is as hard as 'steel'. Even if applied to rotten timber, it turns the rot to steel. Great to use on cracks in exterior windowsills before you apply filler. Previous experience on a 1910 villa tought me this tip.
If you try and clean out the crack, you almost never get out all the old problem timber. use the 2 pack sealer and all the crack is then sealed and rock hard. prime. fill and sand then pain and it will last another 20 years.
Exactly the advice I was looking for for my 1960s house that badly needs it in many places
Could just use epoxy filler and add your own milled glass fibres. I do that and also with mortar mix, I add chopped glass fibres to strengthen it.
This!!! We use Everdure at our boat shed, both for the wood on the shed and the boats.
My wife and I just got a ducted heat pump installed in our house. It was originally heated by either a propane heater or electric baseboard heater with both options being expensive. We love it and highly recommend to anyone that does not have the option of natural gas (the other less expensive alternative). Where we are, we're able to get a 7 years 0% interest plus some rebate.
natural gas is a climate disaster, so it's only cheaper in the "money paid today" sense. Plus it's toxic for people in the house, which matters to some people (it's not the CO2, most of that goes up the chimney, it's the VOCs and direct gas leakage)
Imagine the work required by those old Victorian homes with all the filigree/gingerbread woodwork everywhere. I like the corner solution despite the extra scribing work. Here in the USA I've never seen those plates used on siding joints, interesting. You've got yourselves a beautiful spot for a home there.
Spent 9 years in NZ for my high school & tertiary studies & the sound of the cicadas are my absolute fave! Reminder of the Kiwi summer!
I love to sit down and relax to "Scott brown hair" after a stressful day at work .. your wife's Squarespace segways crack me up every time!
I feel like it's pretty much been 3 days rain to 1 day sun for the past 18 months in the Waikato. Thanks for the video - gave me some ideas on how to fix my aging house
When I’ve done exterior cladding like that in the past (from the UK) I’ve always started by fitting corner posts around the house then butt the boards up to that,
Great video again Scott.Love watching you work from my armchair!Kia kaha!
The face lift of the inside of your shop/garage looks amazing!
That sponsorship transition was smooth as hell haha!
Can’t wait to see how you tackle any leaking gutters.
I had a mighty chuckle at the "no pencil marks" ^^
Your old house carpentry work is so relevant to the new modern wooden homes
I need to do this sooooooo badly - thanks for the tips!
I have to add the Iceberg rose.. white rose , looks so much better after I pruned it on Christmas Day! I’m not sure if it is an Iceberg though?😎❤️
Hey Scott, I saw you using one of those Makita orbital Sanders and went and brought one, so handy! Keep up the good work, I really enjoy watching. I renovated our old bungalow a few years ago, so fun to watch a pro do it. Your saw bench is epic too.
Thanks mate! enjoy the sander :)
Love your style esp “Scott Brown here”. Look forward to your vids and the DIY tips and carpentry tricks. Well done and thank you fm N Ireland.
Hey. Love the videography and your work. I am learning heaps. 🙌👌. I would recommend oilbase undercoating the bare timber before applying the 2 Pac filler. This will increase your adhesion, stop staining coming though, penetrate/seal the timber this will create a longer lasting finish. It's not something that alot of painters do but that's what I do.
Jess's segue into the ad was top-notch.
+1 on that seyway there Jess, that was exceptionally smooth.. heh
Thank you Scott, I have the same issue on my house with terrible corners. I will try and do this job myself, when the rain stops lol.
Earthquakes
I have the same issue with the weather boards on my 1955 built house and was stuck on figuring it out, excellent video (as usual), so thanks muchly! ;)
I do love a Scott Brown scribber
Just installed a Daikin 5 zone with Airtouch 4.
My wife and I miss this channel when it was more about building/creating and less blog. You should start up a sister channel.
Scribers, a thing of beauty
I think it was 24.53 and 3/8ths😁 I thought you were going to cut the ends at the corners and sink the corner boards in.
That friggin ad transition. So good
you can get tongue and groove boxed corners pretty easily. so good to use. (I'm from Welly NZ)
I don’t think you can go back to doing the square space intros now Jess has stepped up 😂
Solid Segway by Jess! Lol well done!
Just a point on Jesses tomatos...you are supposed to pinch out the side shoots that grow out of the junction with the main stem. they sap the plants strength and reduce crop size......love you videos.
I can hear the house saying thank you.
You're easy to follow...and I have a short attention span. Ha! Since I saw you using it thought I'd also let you know I bought the new Makita Multi-Tool based on your tool review...my first. Beyond a day & night difference between it an my friends older corded Fein. He's doing the demo/reno downstairs and I'm just helping when I have the time. Can hear his throughout the upstairs and sense the vibrations. When I use mine I play music on a small blue tooth speaker that's about 8-10 ft. away and sing along with significantly much less vibration than what I hear from his transferred to my hands. Thanks for the tool review and those box ends look so nice. I think it looks better regardless if the wood was damaged or new.
Take Care 🤙🏼
Thanks for another great video. I love how you combine the everyday life with carpentry in your episodes. The nature there is amazing ! All the best.
Jess - On point with your SquareSpace transition
Looks good.
Soakers also can possibly cause problems if paint not kept up.Water can go in behind them by capillary action if any gap not sealed by paint.Great videos Scott and Jess.👍
Scott you need to make a scrap bin on wheels for all the scrap offcuts at the mitre saw👍a tidy space is a tidy mind👌
Great idea
So good to be working on your own house and Jess loving the tomatoes. Nice one.
Great work. Love the scriber detail. If it was me and my new house. though.....I'd have to add a puppy.
This is perfect timing! Thank you
Another brilliant segue by Jess there
Hey I live on the opposite side of the world and I have the same Britta water bottle.
Love watching your house renovation videos from here in currently a chilly England. I renovated a house back in 2015 and quite honestly as a DIY enthusiast probably bit of more than I could chew (I did get some trades people in for electrics and plumbing). Having said that I’ve got the bug to do it all again and that’s just from watching your channel. Keep up the good work…. Love it 😀.
Lol he looks like a giant in his garage Scott always come through with the awesome episodes
Great video and YES, I agree with Jess, you are a fantastic builder! Your attention to detail is outstanding, I learn a lot from your videos! Thanks for posting :^)
Jess, again with the crazy smooth segway, to the sponsor....Go Jess!
I think if a ducting system is in the budget then go for it as they are more costly but they look great and you get the whole house done which nicer than just 1 or 2 rooms. Looking good nice job with the corners and cracks.
I agree Ian, big cost up front but I think we will be happy with it long term.
Also agree, and if you have the budget to add some electronic dampers to shut some rooms off when not in use it will show on the electricity bill. Keep up the good work, enjoying the vids scott.
Nice work mate looks good, box corners great option with windows with facings. I've been drilling a small 3-4mm hole at the end of a crack in timber weatherborads seems to work well to stop them spreading. Repair care is also a great product for larger cracks or damaged boards seems to be more flexible to allow for movement in boards. Keen to see the houses transformation well done bro
...ok, that's the first tomato based segue I've seen and I like it! :D
I’ve never had such a good laugh at an ad transition. Don’t even mind sitting through the pitch yet again 😂
G,day Scott Brown Carpentry from Sydney Australia.
Thankyou for explaining the process of box corners and weather plates for boards.
* The tomatoes may need dusting with pesticide powder. This is when large and green. Don't let any leaves touch the ground. Spots or brown leaves break off and - in the bin, not compost to stop desease.
🌏🇦🇺
Installing a Dust Deputy (or simular in-line cyclone) will save you $ on bags and filter. I use the Dust Deputy in my shop and the Festool separator on site. Makes a huge differance in longevity of the hepa filter and bags used. It has more than paid for itself in savings.👍
Nice to see you house getting better on every new episode
Thanks for the video Scott, really interesting to see you making progress with your new home. Hope the weather is a bit kinder to you.👍👍
Excellent advice as usual tx SB🎯💯
Mate that’s a true cry for help right there, need a vacuum for this table saw but I don’t wanna buy one! Lol
Hope that cyclone didn't do any damage mate. Love the vids man.
Love surprise veggies. We always chuck any sprouting potatoes in the garden somewhere.
We recently had (what we think is) corn growing in the middle of the lawn. It looks like corn and its where we usually feed the chickens (a layer seed mix that contains corn) so we are watering it and seeing where it goes. We have not done an actual veggie garden in the last few years as we have not had the time to put into it with 2 kids under 3.
we are hoping to get the veggie patch sorted over winter when the ground is softer ready for September.
I really enjoy your videos and a lot of advice. Always have lots of guestions and watching your videos answers them. Thank You and keep up all the good videos
As always, love the video. I reckon split systems make more sense than ducted for almost every scenario. There’s absolutely efficiency lost by moving heated (or cooled) air around as opposed to making it in the room with a split system.
Perhaps bulkhead mounted multi-split would be a good option?
some ducted system move refrigerant around... so it's not too bad on efficiency front
I was checking your Merch. I really would love a hoodie like the T-shirt with your Van on it.
i have just planted the seeds of my tomatoes (cherry) today. still winter here in Europe in march/April hooping to plant them outside in pots.
Always a great job Scott. Thanks for sharing all those little techniques that gives you the nice tight joints that stand out when you don't follow the correct steps. It makes a huge difference. We really get great enjoyment from making something for ourselves. Awesome mate...........
I had a weatherboard house and used a timber treatment chemical mixed with turps. It treated the timber and I put new metal soakers on the corner. I made them myself because the old sizes weren't available any more. Instead of replacing all of them, I just replaced the ones that needed it.
Box corners, good call!
The next owners of this how are gonna be some lucky folks.
I think I would have ran a bead of silicone caulk in the gap youre covering. looks good scott
As luck would have it, I just bought a house similar to yours, so I look forward to more vids of your progress 🤙
I want to visit New Zealand really bad. The travel agency for new zzealand should give y’all money for such good promotions.
Second comment. Tomato plants fall into 2 basic categories - bush or upright (the technical names don’t help). Totally different control measures needed for each; including nipping put the parts which grow between the stem and leaf junction on upright toms but not on bush. Bush tend to have lots of small toms whereas upright tend to have fewer but larger. We particularly like San Mariano toms because they are mostly flesh and are the best for use in pizza and pasta sauces etc. we also think that they are better in salads for flavour. Mind you, anything home grown, picked and eaten within hours is better than 90% of the tasteless imitations sold in supermarkets
definitely prefer the box corner look. Good job!
Jess Segue ftw! 😁
New Zealand cicadas are much easier on the ears compared to North America ones.
they use a self colour cement planks here in the uk they seem to work well and we have a similar climate ....rain
What a great video! Awesome treat to watch during my brekky before work.
I just love the videos on your house. Hope you find time and energy to do them more often, cuz I want more 😍
Firstly, that was a slick segue into the squarespace sponsorship.
Next, what did you use to fill the irregular gap between the 'box corner' and the weatherboard? It looks like builders bog (2 part epoxy filler)
My house has brick on two ends and weatherboards front and back. There is a type of box corner that's nailed and adhered to the brick and overlaps the weatherboards, but it isn't sealed and I believe that driving rain is getting in and around the corners against the weatherboards
cheers
Damo
