9. I'm Heading South but The Boats leaking!

- After a peaceful night moored up at Braunston I set off towards the Braunston locks and the Tunnel. Once through the tunnel, I cruised slowly along until I reached the Buckby flight of seven locks which took me down to Whilton where I bought Bubbly Too from Whilton Marina. I spent a night there before continuing down the Grand Union heading to Milton Keynes. All was going well but after using the bilge pump and pumping out a fair amount of water I found the stern gland was leaking quite badly. I thought the worst but thanks to the guys at the Grand Junction Boat Company It turned out that the stern gland just needed repacking which they did for me in quick time and for a reasonable cost. Feeling a little stressed I moored up not far from Gayton to relax and unwind.

another great vlog. Glad it didn't cost you to much. Looking forward to the next one.
Such a beautiful country! Greetings from New York!
😀😀😀😀😀😀😀That's good news that it's only packing required. I would ensure the engine bay is cleaned and dried out and rust treated with a new lick of paint before winter sets in. Rust is a boaters nightmare, just like termites in a home the damage can be costly.
Fortunately I have a wet & dry vacuum so managed to get the water that the bilge pump couldn’t pump out cleared quickly.
We've had some leaks too! Glad to see it was easily sorted
Hope your leaks were as easily fixed. As they say there is always something to do on a boat.
@@TheNarrowboatNomad they will be sorted next week by a service centre in Colchester. I can imagine boats get loads of leaks!
@@suecoo66 I hope all goes smoothly next week for you and yes all boats leak a little I suppose.
Good morning
By the time you read my post I would presume you sorted your stern gland.
What I was going to say on the matter is. Check engine mounts and drive shaft alignment since if they are out of pure alignment then that will cause the drive shaft to pressure at an angle causing packing not to do its job.
On the subject of hull protection bitumen blacking is of no use.
It is the cardinal sin when boats are first constructed to use.
Steel boats are battery plates in the water.
At our level of entry our best hope is to sand blast the hull and apply 3 coats of two pack resin which protects for upto 5 years.
The proper job is another matter.
Hi David, the mechanic who repacked the stern gland for me thought everything was good, engine mounts etc. I nipped up the nuts a touch after running for a bit and have had no issues since so I think all is as it should be. Bubbly Too was two packed both top and bottom two years ago.
Shame that you just bought that boat and are having issues with it. Glad the issue is resolved though...she sure is a pretty boat. Have a safe time!
Hi and thanks for the comments. Bubbly Too is a lovely boat but she is 35 years old so I suppose I have to expect some issues.
Hello and thank you for a lovely trip. Glad to see the problem was resolved easily. The music you chose made the video extra nice. See you next week😎
Welcome aboard. Thanks for the lovely comment and your support. 😊
Hi Alan, just looking at the footage in Braunston tunnel, the engine seemed to be working rather hard for the progress being made (2 - 3 mph).
Hi and thanks for the comment. The engine seems fine but the sounds were reverberating around the tunnel a lot, more so than than the previous trip through. Appreciate your your comment though, good to know someone is watching my back. 😊
Left the rat race of the Uk 25 years ago to live and work in Asia and watching video's of life on the boats is making me think , Why not ? and maybe come back.
Why not indeed. It is a great way of life but a big step. If you do decide to give it a go I wish you all best.
We are in the throws of going back. Fingers crossed.
You should try to up your audio
Yes I know I have tried a couple of different mics and hope I’ll improve soon. It’s all a learning curve and I’m trying. 😊
cannot hear you, you need to get the sound sorted out, a shame.
