You know where you sit if your parent doesn’t even make it to your college graduation. My own mother skipped mine, because she was tired and sore from shopping all day with her friends. I wish I was kidding about that. She didn’t even try to make something up and told me that herself. I’d worked full time and gone to college full time, graduating in 4 years, only to be dismissed like it wasn’t much. She apologized later, and seemed sincere, but what do you say to something like that? I just said it was fine and tried to move on. Didn’t work. For unrelated matters we stopped speaking entirely for several years, and now she’s passed. Although unrelated to the college incident, it was due to disrespect and breaking boundaries. She tried to start getting accusatory and abusive with my wife, and that will never happen on my watch. It’s sad, because we could have had a real relationship, and I could have been there for her when she was dying. But I didn’t even know about it til a month later, as no one contacted me. Think hard before treating your son or daughter with contempt.
Luckily my family situation is not at all like that, sure it’s not perfect but it’s healthy. But it seems like a letter of cease and desist is a power card which I am sure is good to know.
