Polish civilians train for conflict | DW Documentary

- Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Poland has been massively upgrading its military. People are worried the war could spread to their country, and more and more civilians are training how to use weapons.
Poland sees itself as a frontline state on NATO’s eastern flank. As such, the country aims to become one of Europe’s strongest military powers and is mobilizing society to achieve that goal. Increasingly popular are military training programs for civilians, offered nationwide by both state and private organizations. Under the slogan ‘Train with the Army’, the Polish armed forces offer one-day taster courses everywhere from big cities to remote regional areas - and demand has been huge. Agnieszka Wojas and Magda Radomska, two friends from Warsaw, have also taken part. Their training included learning to shoot an AK47 assault rifle. Meanwhile, paramilitary groups are also booming. Kamil Mazur is part of Strzelec, one of the largest such groups in the country. It primarily aims to prepare young people for military service. Mazur comes from Rzeszów, a city in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in Poland’s south-east. With the Ukrainian border around 90 kilometers away, the town and its airport have become one of the most important frontline hubs for aid being sent to Ukraine. Every day, military aircraft land here, bringing air defense systems, ammunition and armored vehicles.

American here. The Polish people are some of my favorite in Europe. I hope to visit someday. Your people are so smart and practical. You understand this time now is when you prepare. All of Europe should be doing this. If every country in Europe did this type of preparation, and spent as much on defense as Poland then think of the support that Ukraine could receive. I wish you could count on the USA’s support for Ukraine but you can’t. The silver lining is that Europe is starting to imagine a world where it doesn’t need American protection. This is great. A strong European NATO will allow the USA to focus on China. If authoritarianism spreads. Democracy loses. Every few years we see China updates its map to claim new territory it sees are its territory. We can see where this is going. Take care all. Best wishes.

We say in Poland - if you don't want to maintain your own army, you will feed a foreign one. We experienced this in the past, when the powerful Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth maintained a relatively small, yet elite and well-trained army. The nobility repeatedly refused to increase taxes for the army, this only happened when a conflict broke out. This was not enough in the 17th century, which for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was one great series of wars with all its neighbors. By the 18th century it was too late. And for over a hundred years we had to do just that - maintain the armies of the three powers and fight in their ranks, often against each other. We don't want this to happen again.

3) no - plans to build shooting ranges are there from many years - its jut on paper
4) no - Territorial Defence Force does NOT offer logistical support for other branches of the military. It is a seperate, independent military branch like the US National Guard or US Coast Guard. Those are seperate armed organizations gathered in one military.

It's like summer 1914.... I'm glad they are on our side...
I like the gun range owner. Although I do think he is overestimating the usefulness of simply knowing how to shoot alone. It's all well and good to have those skills, but if a person is not conditioned and trained for battle, knowing how to shoot isn't going to mean much when that person is completely gassed from running for 30 seconds lol. If people plan on being useful in combat, they really need to focus on fitness, especially cardio. Like the dude with the big beard and his son. If that dude has to actually run a long distance, he would be so winded that trying to think clearly, take steady aim, and not cough up his lungs would be near impossible. People severely underestimate the importance of fitness. It cracks me up when I hear people on youtube talk a bunch of tough guy stuff about combat, but they probably can't even do one pull-up or jog for a quarter mile without being winded. I'm sure you all know the type. I'm 36, and my cardio is horrible. I'd be a huge liability to any functioning unit since I couldn't keep up. I used to be amazingly fast and could run for days in my teens and early 20s. I started getting lazy around 27 or 28 years old. I'm not overweight, and I look to be in good shape. I need to build cardio back up and do some strength training to get cut again. I'm about 176 pounds and 5'9 1/2. I guess my point is if anyone out there thinks they may have to fight, which I truly hope you don't, however if you do make sure you are working out as well as learning to shoot!
I agree 100%, there is a reason why you need to pass cardio and strenght test to join army. No one wants someone who will be needed to be carried and slow down the rest of group.
I agree 100%, there is a reason why you need to pass cardio and strenght test to join army. No one wants someone who will be needed to be carried and slow down the rest of group.
You are 100% correct. However, those people dont have to be on the front lines in infantry or armor or other combat arms units. It takes about 9 soldiers to support 1 combat soldier. So Territorial Defense with people who might be unfit for straight combat can serve as support to combat soldiers. You need electricians, mechanics, convoy guards, supply etc. They can serve in that role if war comes. And if worst comes they at least have know how to fight. But yeah, for actual combat soldiers you need to be fit. I am like you. Served 8 years in the Army in combat arms. Now I am in my 40s and there is no way I could do job I did in the army. But other stuff, non combat tasks that support soldiers on front lines, absolutely.
Generally, I'm not sure if there's anything like this in the West, but in Poland, there is something called "Civil Defense." It's a formation that deals with: preparing buildings in case of bombings, helps with decontamination, evacuating the population, and most importantly, it focuses on protecting civilians. It seems to me that the man in the movie is referring to civil defense because many shooting clubs cooperate with it.
Oh boy......
2:00 As opposed to? Dead ammunition? How else are you going to fucking train your marksman skills?!
The main task of the territorial defence in the first days of war is not to shoot each other) It is from my experience in the first days of war in the Ukrainian territorial defence) I hope they take Ukrainian experience into account, both good and bad.

Polish people knows best
Polish civilians train to avoid conflict.
If russia will see that whole country is prepared for war they will think twice before attack.
or the Russkies will think: "check", it is good that people think ahead, it is bad that this is presented on German TV
Curious to know whether German civilians receive similar military training?
in germany you have more turkish and african imigrants than germans, and they won't fight for the germany
No we are not even allowed to get weapon.
And now our naziminister wants to make crossbows illegal too. They even restricted the length of my pocketknife
Germany unfortunately is one of the worst offenders when it comes to NATO members who spend at least 2% of their GDP on military. They currently spend only 1.4% of their GDP (almost as bad as Canada, who are among the worst offenders, much to my shame). Although they have committed to spending 2%... by 2030. Their military has been cut down by 70% just in the past 25 years, they are in effect today a mostly useless military considering their size and economic strength and have admitted that their stockpiles are so poor, they would run out of artillery munitions in less than 1 month of the kind of warfare Ukraine is currently fighting today.. and keep in mind, they would need about 10 years of straight nonstop manufacturing of munitions to perform the amount of artillery shelling Russia did in just 1 year of war on Ukraine. Russia was manufacturing munitions for decades and still is today, while German munitions factories sat idle and cold (and still do today, most are still not operational).
@@Hathur Really? Pretty surprised to know this fact. Most non-German people always think Germany is one of the most powerful military countries in the world.
@@AlfredJPLin They were, 20+ years ago. But since then they gradually and completely gutted their military after the fall the Soviet Union, both in manpower and especially in munitions stockpiles (again, literally only has enough heavy munitions to do 1 month of the kind of war happening in Ukraine, Russia can currently manufacture almost as much munitions as they use per day.. Germany can't even come close, they need 10 days of manufacturing to get 1 day of warfare.. Russia is roughly 1 to 1).
Torniquet! Not bandage! (For translator)
Tell him to wear safety glasses
It's foolish to think of Russia attacking a nato country without nukes
This is the mistake NATO nations make.. and the more sensible Poles understand due to history. Putin (assuming he takes Ukraine successfully at some point), will look at Poland and call America's bluff. He will say: "I'm going to test Article 5 of the NATO Charter... I don't believe you will start a nuclear war with us and end all life on Earth, just to save Poland." .. and he will attack. Or have we all forgotten already that both the US and UK betrayed Poland after WWII? They both promised Poland to protect it from Soviet Russia... and when Stalin invaded it, they turned their backs on Poland because they deemed a war with Russia was too costly.
Putin will make the same gamble. He doesn't think the rest of the world will risk the end of humanity with a nuclear war just to save Poland... and he might very well be right... at the end of the day, I think the rest of the world turns their back on Poland if it means betraying Poland to avoid nuclear war.
This is why Poland is so determined to create a powerful army, they KNOW they cannot trust NATO to guarantee protection, they know they can be betrayed like they were after WWII.. so they have to be strong enough to fight alone if needed.
If Russia can attack smaller countries (Baltic countries) without nuclear weapons, why would you do it? Besides, when they use the atomic bomb it will be the end of them, they will have broken the main rule. The West will thus destroy them. It's stupid the way you think about war
I thought Poland had national service? Its good to see how the Polish military has progressed over the last few years. Give it a few more years, and I reckon Poland will have one best militaries in NATO 🙂
We had that until January 2010. It's been suspended since then. Instead of providing basic military training for all young men, Poland decided to invest more heavily into professionalising the army.
Good to see that Europe is stepping up, though in the medium and long term more cooperation across Europe to ensure some expensive capabilities would be beneficial.

Poland has been invaded and partitioned by other countries in history, and the current war in Ukraine has awakened Polish people's memories of the past.
LOL, these Polish civilians trained for combat in the 1930s as well but the mighty Germans crushed them in less than two weeks. The German Armed Forces under the leadership of then Chancellor Sir Adolf Hitler had a policy to NOT target civilians but these Polish civilians had trained for conflict and continuously fired at the brave German soldiers fighting for our freedom and so, the German Armed Forces had no choice but to retaliate. This is a nice comedy documentary.
You are very mistaken my friend. The resistance was going on for weeks. Uprises and other things. Remember one thing: We will fight because we love what's behind our back (land and the people) with any intruder foreign or domestic. Mr India man.
The people who charged panzers on horseback and fought fiercely for their country in WW2 should not be ignored or ridiculed, the Polish people are very brave like the Fins.
the part of charging tanks on horseback is actually german propaganda that was proven false many times, but with the rest you are right ;)
@@Mszaanisko Yes, the horses were there to offer high mobility in difficult terrain.
@@PaweKabanski Yeah I know that but there was no "charges" like medieval style on horseback to attack tanks and that's what the bot above wrote. It was more like mechanized infantry, but mote "horseized" infantry :)
More than half the german army used horses and bicycles. Only a few divisions were mechanized
It's shameful that countries like Poland in NATO are forced to shoulder the first line defence against the unpleasant neighbor in the east while richer countries still refuse even to spend 2% of the GDP.

Curently it is a trial for his parents and the owner of a shooting range where he allegedly went and practise shootings. Are the laws in Poland different about that subject? How come it is legal for minors to use weapons?
they can only use them at shooting ranges under supervision. In contrast to Serbia there are way less guns in circulation among the civilian population so its way harder for anyone to obtain one. I would wish that adults know how to negotiate first and do everything to avoid conflict, and then teach themselves how to use guns and defend themselves. After that kids can do that by learning from them. Kids need to be raised with respect, then they will respect themselves and their neighbours and fight for their country and these values volountarily.
The training will do nothing without the above. Nothing compares to parental abuse in todays world. You can have rambo kids, but if parents and society is abusive also, then what to fight for? And child abuse and neglect(which is abuse) is common in all of the world today - propably more in the more authoritarian countries like Russia or China, but its still common everywhere.

Buddy negotiations only work if both sides want to negotiate. The Russians do not. And when you’re faced with a neighbor on the war path who as historically invaded and annexed your country multiple times it’s better to be prepared. And frankly putting the onus on Poland is victim blaming.
Si vis pacem, para bellum.
@@baneofbanes You have it backwards. Russians want and wanted to negotiate. It was Zelensky advised by Boris Johnson who broke the negotiations and never looked back. Read about it. Johnson said that if Zelensky would negotiate, the help from Britain and NATO would end. So now they have help, but the situation is how it is. Half the country in ruins and 100s of thousands more people dead. More guns and bombs would not solve it, becouse its not like Russians are short of people or artilery. The conflict would just escalate and drag on and on, potentially bringing more countries into it.
And in regards to Poland. I dont think we are responsible for this in any way, but our policy for the last 10 years was heading towards more NATO bases, more militarism and more conflict with Russia(Smolensk catastrophy was blamed on Russians). I never thought that mutual blaming and trade war, while building military was a good idea. We also help to open the way for USA to mingle in Ukraine and expanding NATO east. I dont think that all of that made us safer. Becouse it just brought more tensions with Russia and made us into future potential target.
When you stop trade and diplomacy, you start posturing and bombs are starting to fly.
@@michasosnowski5918 Putin wanst Ukraine to be a part of Russia and there is nothing to talk about to a guy like him. Russia should have stayed inside its own borders.
its good to be prepared, but knocking someones knife from his hand is a circus act and dosnt work in the real world. looks like a BS training to me, all that hand to hand they showed is a waste of time.
german deutsche welle shows polish civilians preparing for armed conflict, has the decision already been made?
Yes as seen by all the provocations and active war participation by natocountries for two years now. The western politicians want war to save their debt ridden economies and their political power from the masses who start hating them
I support their will to be prepared but the guy keeping a gas mask in his bedroom is creepy
The way I see it, it is a failure of government and society when the community increases its desire for self-defence skills. This is a sign that things are moving in the wrong direction. Poland is not Ukraine, it should not dream about ending up like it.
Good luck Kamil. Bóg, Honor, Ojczyzna
Honor Ojczyzna, bóg to doklejka z lat 90 do przedwojennej dewizy, gdy rządzili nami radykałowie z ZChN.
I am duchs i hef e lod of respect tho the Pools
As a historian I gotta admit you Poles learned your lesson 500 years ago : always be prepared incase if Russia does invade you
Clever to build a civilian army, the Polish have had experience of living within a Soviet state, great country bad neighbours!
Unfathomably based.
When Japan was contemplating a mainland invasion of the US it was said “behind every blade of grass would be a rifle” or some variation. It says something about a civilian population that is “gun crazy” vs some euro nation with no firearm liberty’s
DO NOT GO TO WAR.....ONLY POOR PEOPLE GOES....RICH GET RICHER
We have no choice. We will not live under Putin. Maybe this is for you?
To quote a German i served with in Afghanistan - who was railing against American gun rights: “vee vould never allow zis in Germany…” Indeed. Good for Poland - a free people should be allowed to own arms and ammunition.
I mean there is reasons half the germans now feel unsafe, jails are full and violent crime by foreigners on germans is around 80% and rising. They cant and dont want to defend themselves and just like to bend over and cry for daddy government. I live here its really that case
