I stopped the video at 8 minutes and went outside and got busy ,thanks to your reminding me, that it has rained and my c!ay soil in Georgia is easily dug. Thanks Linda.
I live right outside of D C, and older gardening ladies taught me 30 years ago (I’m an older gardening lady now!) to add 1/2 pine bark chips, 1/2 compost to my horrible red clay soil. I end up with about equal parts of all chips, compost and clay. It really helps. I’ve been told no peat or sand, because it more or less can make pottery! Linda, at least your clay is a pretty dark color!!!
Linda, thank you so much for sharing your gardening and lifestyle tips! You are beautiful, smart, stylish and so fun to watch!! Hope you have had a lovely Mother’s Day!
Linda, I am concerned that you may have ran across an Asian jumping worm when you were planting a hydrangea. Normal worms do not jump that way. Maybe keep an eye out for more. They are invasive, and what I have read is that you should capture it, freeze it and throw it out.
V-neck. Always V-neck. Its rare that I hit clay soil on my property, but I have. Been organically farmed for hundreds of years. Its beautiful soil. But don't let clay soil stop you from gardening. Good vlog!
My clay soil in the Niagara Ontario area is horrible and has zero drainage. I plant high, amend with triple mix and mulch well. I’m hopeful my newly planted hydrangeas survive. So far so good. Great show Linda
I’m in the same area, I shred my leaves in the fall and top dress the beds. I mulch with pine bark. I’ve got three limelight hydrangeas that are doing fine, probably smaller because of tree root competition and they could use a bit more sun.
I live in the Waterloo area and we also had clay soil, we had many deliveries of screened soil to amend our gardens. Now the gardens are happy and so I'm l not having to dig in the hard clay😊
Ciao from Italy. We have red clay soil, it was so hard to dig for the vegetable garden. I built from old bricks raised beds just a frame added sand and torfe every year, it improved a lot but after 4 years of tons of veggies decided we needed much smaller, so changed location and planted there pumpkins. I hope this tip will help to someone.
The clay soil in Illinois and Connecticut were such a struggle for me after gardening in the San Francisco Bay Area, where anything grows! I remember my neighbor ‘s fantastic blue- pink climbing hydrangea which spilled into my yard, and the bountiful Lantana that grew year round! Now I’m preparing to move to Coastal Connecticut which I k ow nothing about! We will be building new construction and creating a garden from scratch! Big changes and challenges. I’ve been taking notes from you, Linda!
Linda your garden and home look absolutely charming! What a transformation. In my younger years I was a V neck kinda gal. however after my seventh decade arrived it was back to crew neck, elbow or 3/4 length sleeves. . . .eventually no matter how thin, healthy and well preserved you are, things go south!!
Linda, my hydrangeas do quite well in zone 8a NC . My soil is definitely clay. I amend the beds with compost and do plant high. Also mulch each year. For the most part I have no trouble as long as the plants can withstand our heat and humidity. Thanks for addressing this issue.
Hi Linda , I have clay soil here West Cork , Ireland. That was great advice for planting. Never knew about roughing up the sides of the hole. Thank you.
Oh my gosh! I am laughing....My clay soil is red and like digging up a brick. Despite it weighing a ton, I dig it out and haul it into the woods and then fill the hole with better dirt and compost. Sometimes that doesn't work long term when the roots start reaching the brick soil. Over time I have added a ton of compost all over to get better soil. But, it has been a 30 year project!
I have the same pants from Amazon, which you had recommended a couple of months ago!! I have followed you on UA-cam for several years now. I look always look forward to see what you're up to next. Happy Mother's day!! 😊❤💐
Hi Linda Great info on planting in clay soil. Monty Don,whom you know, advises to always water newly planted plants in with at least a gallon of water, even though rain is expected or etc❤
This was the best video for me so far although I LOVE all your videos! I didn’t realize I had clay soil until you explained what it looks like. Thanks Linda and hope you enjoyed your Mother’s Day!
The best video on planting in clay soil I've seen. You made it so simple for new gardeners to understand. My garden in Kentucky is heavy clay, but as you showed it can provide successful plantings. Thanks
For style, I like a V neck. For sun protection, a crew neck:) I have black clay soil in the Pacific Northwest. I plant some things high, so the wet winter doesn’t get them. I look at my black clay like it’s black gold, as far as nutrients go.
THANK YOU!! WONDERFUL information, great tips that I will absolutely do, great advice! Our front beds and back garden are doing so well, and it is all due to your excellent, thorough advice and honesty about our climate and challenges. One day I saw our 20-something DIL videoing our back garden, and it was a huge compliment - due to you!! This clay soil video is absolutely SPOT-ON!
Thank you so much for your depth of gardening knowledge and have admittedly made a few planting mistakes so i for one am learning so much especially regarding the subject of growing in Clay soil conditions which i sm dealing with here in the Uk . .
Wow, what an informative video. I’ve been gardening for years and never heard of some of the techniques you used. I live in Atlanta so we have that good old red Georgia Clay! I laughed when you said the word britches because I thought that was just a southern thing😜
this was a very helpful video. I have clay soil in my garden. A few of the plants you mentioned i just planted over the weekend so I feel pretty good that they will take in my garden. Also- the tip about not fertilizing/watering as much is a great tip. I usually just keep an eye on the plant and it will let me know if it needs water. I do alot of container gardening too so I usually have to keep them hand watered. You're garden is really looking full and luxurious! Looking forward to seeing more as the season progresses.
I have clay soil too....like most people do! I know that you have mentioned in other videos that you recommend walking as little as possible in your garden bed , since it compacts clay soil. That is why we see you "hop" from stepping stone to stepping stone. I am guilty of this, and need to set down some stepping stones in my garden,
Thank you for this very helpful video. I have clay soil but never knew about not fertilizing or backfilling with the clay. I always backfilled with bagged “garden soil” and fertilized the area after planting. Now I understand why those steps aren’t necessary and probably detrimental. I’ve learned a lot from watching your videos and appreciate you sharing your knowledge and great ideas! I’m on team v neck!
I ordered those type of plants today in Navy. From manufacture off commercial today before I saw yours. It just awes me how much we like and order the same things. Mine were 22 or 24 dollars. They come in black, navy, green. Reg. Or long. I need long. I was thinking that if they did well I should.order 4 more pairs in different colors. At my age I am into comfort at least at home. Wish they made short out of same material because it gets hot where we live. By the way I have 2 of those navey Asian lamps and got them before you showed yours. I also started adding all the blue in my house around when you did. Lol lol. That's just a few of what I see we have alike. I told you sister from another mother! Lol. Yard looking good. Mine is almost planted with new plants so looks good so far. Way behind you. Texas 9
Hi Linda, Love your channel, I have learned so much from you not only in gardening but also dressing after 60 years of age. You have great taste. My question is, my father taught me many years ago to shove the running watering hose down into the newly planted perennials to get rid of all the air pockets. While watching the bubbles come to the surface, you can be sure to get rid of airpockets. Thanks for making thrifting so cool, I've been doing it for 40 yrs, even though it was looked down on. You're my therapist! ❤
Just watched your video on clay soil. Oh my dear(OMD) I have clay soil with rocks, big rock in it. Love it love it. thanks for the education. I am in Dutchess County NY. My plants are not as blooming as yours. The cottage looks great Oh and the view from that side of the garden is lovely.
And here am I in Southern Maryland dealing with my hydrangeas and mean old clay soil. I use clay breaker with gypsum to amend my clay. I’m in the house as it’s started raining.
Ive gardened on clay and I had the best roses ever! I found spreading organic material quite thickly and letting the worms do the rest does not damage the tilth. I now have light sandy loam and my roses are inferior but I can always work the soil BUT I still spread my own homemade compost everywhere so the worms are busy here too 😂
I live in Colorado & we have clay soil - I amend my soil with manure - perlite- & my homemade compost - I mostly grow succulents cause I live close to Denver & it gets to hot to have special flowers . We have hail also so I have mostly ground covers perennials.I buy cactus mix in big bags to mix with compost - clay - perlite when I plant .. I also dig a large hole for each plant & amend it. I use mulch & in my garden I use real straw to cover ..thanks for doing this video - also I bought two metal hoses that u recommended & they are perfect- so light & easy to water anything .. the name is BlueBala. I need some more boots so thank u..
Love the flowers....alliums....beautiful. Where did you get your bird bath? Love it. Central Texas here...clay soil and less than a foot below...kaliche. I simply don't know how to garden here.
Great video Linda!! Your garden is beautiful! Please, what is the white flower that you have so much of in the bed on the right of your sidewalk? First I thought it was Shasta daisy, but when the video zoomed in I decided it wasn’t. I am also dealing with clay soil and a LOT of rock in north central San Antonio. The challenge is real.
Linda have you ever heard of filling a 5 gallon bucket with sand and then saturate it with motor oil to clean your garden tools? You just insert your tool a few times in the mixture and not only does it clean the tool but helps preserve it😊
Great informational video! My clay soil is very orange/red in East Tn. Yours looks lovely! I didn’t realize it absorbs amendments. So I guess short of completely removing all soil and starting over, one would always have it no matter the amendments? Thank you❤️
I was wondering if that big worm she came across was a jumping worm. I live in SW Missouri not far from her and I’m pretty sure I just found a jumping worm in my garden. 😫
@bonniemaciver I was also wondering if that big one she came across was a jumping worm. I definitely have them here in NE PA and they behave much differently than the typical worm. Hi Linda, Thanks for all the great information. Can you explain the difference between compost, mulch, and planters mix? I have been lucky intermixing all of them in my garden, but wish I knew which would be better to use.
❤ I really love the Hapi Gro however I had to drive from Michigan to Little Rock Ark to get it. And trying to get Lowes management on the phone or even to speak to anyone at OldCastle...forget it. No one has any answers as to why I can buy it in my state. It wasn't even available in illinois, wisconsin, indiana, and it's so frustrating when I go to my local landscape suppliers and show them a sample of Hapi Gro, they have nothing that comes close. What a bummer.
I love your videos and have learned so very much. Thank you. As for the pants, the link doesn’t seem right. Can you list the brand. They look really comfy.
Great Video. V neck Also live in clay soil. Northeast Texas. Advice for container plants for covered patio. Lots of shade. We have 100 year old trees in and around .
Team V neck all the way from my 20s to my 70s!!! It elongates your neck and makes you look thinner! I had to laugh when you said the pants are figure flattering..... duh!!!! when you look like you! One of your other subscribers told me Select Seeds had the minoan lace seeds... yeeayyyyy..just ordered them. And foxgloves and larkspur. I have great soil here in California, so feel fortunate.
I would never have been able to create my new garden on clay at my age without my power planter (dewalt drill with auger) I only ever dug where I was going to plant, shoved a bit of compost in the hole then the plant then some clay and then I watered. Not digging over meant that there were fewer weeds which was good because in the worst places the soil is so sticky you can only scrape them off
you forgot expanded shale. Expanded shale will permanently improve clay soil per the experts. i am into Baptisia and yellow flowers this year. What kind of baptisia do you have? i had an alba come back this year. i ordered a 'lemon meringue".

I saw that and they have that ring around them too.
That was just a large earthworm. We call them nightcrawlers. It was just retracting into it's tunnel in response to the light.
@@suzanne529 I'm not that sure it isn't a jumping worm. That band is pretty distinctive for pictures I just looked up on those jumping worms.

Georgia red clay grower here 🙂👍

Happy Mother's Day, Linda!
Hi Linda , I have clay soil here West Cork , Ireland. That was great advice for planting. Never knew about roughing up the sides of the hole. Thank you.
Oh, my gosh! Linda, I live in Raleigh, NC. Our clay soil is bright orange, and you could start a pottery business with it!
I think there IS a famous pottery business in the Carolinas. 😮
My clay soil is red. And it stains clothing! I definitely have garden clothes I don’t wear anywhere else.
@maryeliason Seagrove NC, pottery capital of the US. 😊

Have you noticed an increase in "jumping worms" over that past few years? They've become quite invasive in my PA garden - I also have clay soil.
I live in sw Pa. and I've noticed them here.
I’m in Reading and haven’t seen them

Mine has done that too.
Any suggestions on that?
Was that a jumping worm you dug up Linda? Happy Mother's Day to you!
That’s what I thought when I saw that white ring. They are so bad for your garden as they eat the plants’ roots.
I was thinking the same thing. I have an abundant supply of them but they haven’t eaten roots, they just take nutrients from the soil so I continue to amend my soil until more research is done and we can find a way to eliminate them.
At 11:11 , what is that long wispy plant behind your left shoulder looks like it has a purple flower coming out on it?
I prefer v-neck as well
What is that gorgeous yellow plant with the purple flower spike next to the White wedding hydrangea you were planting in this video?
Yarrow is hard for me in our clay soil in Louisiana-maybe because of rainfall.
Does it not like water? Just planted some-I’m in bossier city. Clay soil!!
I think it likes it on the dry side; just my experience with it.
What brand leaf blower do you use?
Team V-neck!!
Invasive jumping worm at 7:40
You really don't know that for certain unless you look very closely at the marking on the body.
They should watch Gardening with Creek Side to really learn how to garden in clay soil.
Good tips I like the v neck but they are not as plentiful as round when I go shopping 😢
V neck always! Much more comfortable and us look younger!
Absolutely V-neck.
Definitely V neck makes the neck look longer.❤️
