Honestly I see everyone's point (bad behavior, highlighting cruelty, highlighting stupidity). But you must admit that if you are an exclusive restaurant with regular VIP patrons, preserving the narrative is absolutely vital, and some guy asking an honest question once could pop someone's bubble.

I am Chinese but totally against eating the real shark fin. I am saying from the point of biodiversity preservation. The population of shark has been rapidly declining. It was okay in ancient time cause lower productivity and slower transportation ensures that it is a rare dish and only the richest can afford to have it. Superior modern productivity, transportation and larger consumer base have made this dish an unsustainable bio-disaster and have elevated the shark fin hunting industry to the position of disproportionate slaughters. There is a substitute to the shark fin in this dish, and it does not taste that much different. People who enjoy this dish should really consider the alternative choice.

Imagine you are at an extremely formal work gathering with your bosses and perhaps even the top dog of where you work. You are all wearing 3 piece suits, ties and have paid an extreme sum of money to be at one of the top restaurants in the country.
Now imagine some foreigner, perhaps a Asian maybe wearing a t-shirt and jeans, who doesn't speak a lick of english, barges into your private dining room with a full tv crew and starts asking you questions which you have no idea of. It is plain rude.
In Hong Kong we have "Small Bowl Fin" which is basically a rip off version of the typical shark fin soup, with a thick soup very similar to it (with cheaper and other ingredients like mushrooms, but shark fin replaced with fake ones or simply shortly cut glass noodle. I had shark fin soup before, when I was 12 years old. It was very delicious.
+ambiva the only reason why shark's fin is soo expensive is because.... each shark has only one damn fin..
I'm sure the soup itself tastes great but as Gordon demonstrated, it wouldn't have to have shark fin as an ingredient at all, as it tastes of nothing. so it could just as easily be a non endangered free range chicken for all the difference it would make.

From what I've read, they cut the fin off the shark and throw the shark back in the water to die. Pretty messed up.
+workoutfanatic yea, most of the time they get eaten alive since they cant escape, taking a fin away from a shark is like taking a humans legs, and then its like throwing that human in a cage with savage animals and expect that human to run away :S
+Njoy32Gaming Or you, know throwing that human in the biggest bowl of water in the world to drown.
mmm Serious? A Shark tears through you like butter. A man holds one knife a shark has 50 in-built razor shark knives.
Also a shark will hit you at an unbelievable speed and force - that it will likely knock you out - or you'd just feint from blood loss and shock.
***** mmmm, i don't believe they are scared of humans at all. Sharks have evolved for millions of years - far longer than humans - so i assume they are very developed hunters.
You can think that all you want - but in reality, they aren't scared - they just have different territorial instincts - the Bullshark and Tiger shark are the most territorial while Nurse sharks are much further down.
It is like saying if you or i are afraid of spiders - In reality, i kill spiders with my bare hands when they show up:
1. Because i'm protective of my home.
2. Because i understand i am more powerful.
A shark? They exhibit underwater signs of aggression - like a Gorilla beating his chest - a shark will circle and bump into the intruder.
It's kind of silly to assume they're afraid - you might as well assume they aren't and be extra cautious.
+EnthusiasticTaco is that based on what you know or what you googled to makes you seem smart

The problem with Shark Fin Soup is not that people are *just* eating sharks, but that sharks are having their fins cut off and thrown back into the water-and additionally habitats are being destroyed by removing a top predator. It is a disgustingly selfish and wasteful practise, with no respect for the food consumed and apathy towards the stability of an environment.
Bryce well said
The only arrogance displayed here is by you. What did Bryce say that triggered you?
Bryce definitely well said, I guess a lot of people don't understand how this impacts our environment. Human beings are destroying most of our natural world and soon we will have no resources to sustain ourselves.. I too find this practice utterly ridiculous as well as any type of poaching.
Bryce you are very correct
So what if they throw it back in the water other animals going to eat it anyway
Sharks die in PAIN at the same time DROWN because they cant swim just so an asshole can have "shark fin soup"out of all fish and animals to make soup from,a drunkered bastard had to look at how beautiful a shark is,see how agile it is then think "why not remove its fin and make soup out of it?"Really! How about you stop eating beef, pork, fish and chicken then? Have you fucking see how they are butchered? Didn't think so. Fuck off and get educated.
Michael T Sharks are endangered and is at the top of the food chain. if sharks go extinct it will destroy the ecosystem of the oceans. Fish is overfished aswell and is also a serious problem, many slaughterhouses in more developed countries have a more humane way to kill the cows, chickens and pigs but they are plenty of them
Michael T
you really are a fucktard not to see what species preservation means to people like me who have love for nature....

cutting of a sharks fin disables it from swimming..sharks move in order to breath...no movement=drowning
badfshn stop lying, you never knew XD but I didn't know as well, that's crazy adds a whole new level of depth to the problem, because they literally chop off the fin & throw it back in the ocean...that's horrible. Shark's fin is like gold or diamonds, it's only valuable of you think it is.
well gold is pretty useful and so are diamonds, but definitely overpriced.
Kevin Yeoh gold is valuable, we can't function without it and we can't artificially make it. Diamonds on the other hand are worthless. You can buy one for $2,500 and try and sell it the next day and no one will buy it. Plus you can make them in labs now also and they're just as strong as the real ones.
Wrong, both Gold and diamond is valuable to begin with. You can say it's like Chinese jade which is only valuable in the eyes of those who appreciates it's beauty.
I mean diamonds are really useful, you know diamond tipped tools.
diamonds are valued for their clarity, size, cut quality and color. They have some value in cutting but they can be manufactured. Gold cannot be, it is the most conductive metal, it is very reflective and has many uses in manufacturing and is very limited. Almost all gold on earth has already been uncovered.
Please stop eating shark's fins, after they cut the fins they just threw the sharks' bodies back to the sea then the sharks will eventually die because they can't swim anymore, its too sad

Seriously, people should learn something about what happens to the sharks. Also what happens to the oceans. Now, stop fucking buying this shit. Dont even try it. Restaurants should stop buying this, people should stop buying this.
If this shit gave me the strength of shark or something, Id understand the need for it, even if its horrible.
I think it's because over there it's a sign of wealth, the people clearly don't want to talk about how horrible it is because they know, they just don't care, as long as it makes them look good and rich they'll happily eat it
o.o wat. so it's a mean of expressing your wealth? that's kinda stupid
so its ok for other forms of cruelty to animals its just pick and choose whats ok or not. Mr Ramsay its ok with foie gras, kinda a hypocrite I think.
Jeremy kwong I believe Ramsey is opposed to it being done cruelly, he hates seeing how pigs are treated in slaughterhouses
Foie gras is cruel, too. However, some Europeans and Americans just don't care.
*"can I get a pin and paper?" Gordon is an absolute mad lad*
look don't blame Asians for this, blame the Chinese. Barely anyone in Asia eat shark fin soup except for Chinese people.
Friend, the Chinese are Asians.
yes i know but only Chinese people eat this shit. most people in other asian countries don't eat this.
xArktronix That's not what he meant. He meant that they're Asian like how Malaysians are Asian or how Koreans are Asians etc. xD
xArktronix I never said all Asians are Chinese.
Kieran Henderson But my friend not all Asians are Chinese. I wanna throw a book or a world map at people that are retarded lol.
So basically this shark fin does not taste any good so they have to make it for 3 days to have any flavor... Why even bother eating it?.. Dam...
There is "face" culture in Asia. The more you show off that you're rich and have connections, the more positive people will think about you. It's really toxic and especially in China it can even get you sent to jail or killed
It's not that it doesn't taste any good, it's that it doesn't taste of anything. Cooking it for three days is to loosen up the fibres so they become stringy. The broth is what has the flavour (and is actually really good); the fin is there to be a textural thing. It's like having glass noodles or similar; you don't hear people complaining noodles don't add flavour. Shark's fin is therefore basically a luxurious type of noodle, eaten purely for prestige and heritage. Given how sharks are threatened it's pretty unnecessary in this day and age, but people aren't going to stop eating it, because of what it represents.
stop killing sharks man
DevilPoroNnj fins no longer being served in Asia
lol you libtards. you say stop when they are eating shit loads of shark...but when someone get eaten by one...you libtards say "kill them all!"...contradictions all around!!!
Chris Robbins Who the fuck says that? Almost everyone I've heard who knew of someone being attacked by an animal didn't call for a genocide of the entire species lol
Chris Robbins How is he a liberal for saying don’t eat sharks...
Soo Kaiwen , I tried to make a joke about Finns not being served in Asia but I need to polish it more.
“Just because something is called tradition doesn’t mean that it is good and right..”
One of the saddest and most disgusting things humanity still does! While the shark is alive, all of his fins been cut of, afterwards the shark is been thrown back in the ocean. Most shark species have to swim to be able to breath proper! Means, some of them will lay there up to 3 days till they finally die...
All this for a chicken soup with a piece of very expensive fin!
Official numbers say we kill around 200million sharks a year, imagine the real number..
Sharks are one of the most important members in their ecosystem! Please protect them! Don’t eat shark fin soup! Don’t even go in restaurants which sell this soup!
he paid 90 fucking dollars for 2 bites fucking hell :D
pounds*
It's hella expensive! Do you know how to catch a shark? They will bite everything you throw at him so it's hard to catch. That's why it is expensive
It's hella expensive! Do you know how to catch a shark? They will bite everything you throw at him so it's hard to catch. That's why it is expensive, but for only 90 pounds? Most shark fin soups are like $150 at least
He's got a net worth of 140m I'm sure 90 quid won't break the bank
Lol yeah but still for 2 bites?thats just ridicilous
I have eaten shark fins and it's tasteless.....Expensive .... Yes.....Pretentious...Yes!
How much does it cost to eat that?
depends but about 130 dollars if you want something expensive that taste good try turtle eggs from mexico they are an endangered species but those things actually are really good i can eat them raw its sad but damn they are so damn delicious i used to feel bad for doing it but its like an addiction.
Not all are tasteless. Some are actually good if you go to the right places.
It all depends on the gravy or soup it is cooked with but the fin itself is tasteless. Some shark fin soup have a little crab meat in it and yet it overpowers the whole dish cancelling any taste of the fins if there is any.
+Sedus Dingus see, it's tasteless until you season it. Shark fins can easily be substituted with other things
ramsay so god damn naughty xD
Fourthy Blank Clutter he's a cheeky little bugger ain't he
Nushi1098 hahaha but i like his style
Fourthy Blank Clutter w
Gordon: "Can you get me a pen and piece of paper?"
Guy:"Pen and paper?"
Gordon:"Yes"
Guy:*Leaves*
Gordon: Time to do a sneaky. Hehehehehe~
to those who does not know the shark fin is basically starch to give the texture shark fin soup has and it is also harmful to the human body. The shark fin can always be replaced be other source of starch
Michael T
What?
Michael Gillen the thing is that the shark fin soup ABSOLUTELY does not taste any different than using starch because the main reason is in chinese tradition it is a symbol of wealth.(also shark fin is just a bunch of starch)
You know as a Taiwanese I feel like this is misunderstood.. In Taiwan these shark fins aren't actually common... If they are common and found everywhere one the streets then it wouldn't be that expensive. When people do eat it it's usually just a special occasion or the family that is bloody rich. And people saying how Taiwan is disgusting because we cut their fins alive and leave them to die, you are wrong. Shark finning has already been banned in Taiwan for a few years already.
Just because it's banned doesn't mean people won't do it
Oh I'm only talking about Taiwan if it wasn't obvious enough.
Doesn't matter where, just because it's banned in Taiwan doesn't mean everyone there will stop, there's going to be a few here and there.
Han Zhang
Kay cool.
+Han Zhang Probably just makes it more valuable, and giving poachers more incentive.
Gordon Sneaks off-
Manager- Please don't let them know it's not tasty.
Gordon, it's bizarre cuz you're eating it wrong, you're suppose to add red vinegar to the soup lol
You only need to add vinegar to cover the fishy taste if the ingredients were of lower quality. It's not mandatory.
i love asian food
not all asians eat cats dogs or shark each culture has their own special dishes.
+Brittany Mallette Ya, they just cut off the fins of the shark then throw them into the water to die. What's so wrong with that right?
+Josh Marion you're insanely stupid. Many countries use every part of the shark and export it to other countries. Sure, this may cost more. But 70% of the shark fin business isn't cruel.
+TrueVoidGaming I agree, that that comment was extraordinarily ignorant, however, shark finning and long lining is a major issue. From the last time I checked, the shark population was down by 90% due to long lining and hunting. Whilst I do recognize that the people who are judging Asian culture due to this should have some knowledge on this topic, in reality, this is a very important environmental problem.
+Josh Marion It's actually harder to get that dish than getting Cocain in US, so why don't you take a look at yourself.
Stop the YULIN dog festival!
Growing up in Taiwan, I completely agree with you, sir. I remember trying them growing up, and not once did I feel like it tasted amazing. It is plain like you said. I have never finished the whole soup. I didn’t even like the soup, it is too gooey. People simply eat it for the status.
It is odd, Taiwanese normally eat anything from head to toe, from fish eyes, pig ears, to chicken butt. They leave nothing to waste. They even eat the bones sometimes. We consider Westerners as wasteful because they normally don’t touch stuff like that, unless you are a Cajun. However, with sharks, Taiwanese are wasteful. They have abuse it for no reason but status.
Gordan: Can I have a piece of paper please?
Waiter: Get out and fuck off
"piece of paper..? ah yes, that is a reasonable request. be right back"
"it almost taste like nothing" - its fucking bland!
damn ramsay getting em jukes in there
i've tried shark fin soup at high-end chinese restaurant in indonesia and yes it tastes nothing, it's like eating wide glass noodle. i've eaten it only once and i'm gonna say it is not worth the price at all. it doesn't make you full and it's too overpriced.
My family used to take me to this restaurant when I visit. Ramsay is spot-on; the flavor is in the broth, while the fin is only for texture. I actually held a piece of shark fin in my mouth until all the broth was swallowed; the fin doesn't soak up any of the flavor at all.
I didn't even like the broth, so I only endured the shark fin for the tastier shrimp fried rice and beef.
i think if there was another chef in place of gordon, he would hav said " it tastes amazing, natural.. something like dat... gordon is always real
0:50 - acting like hes not already had it translated 😂😂
Gordon Ramsey is the most stand up guy in person. Real sweet guy.
Gordon, that you?
It's bland.
ITS RAWWWW
Jovan Lim ITS SO FUCKING RAW ITS STILL FUCKING SWIMMING
its just bland . damn . holy mackerel .
Ayeee a fellow Rasmussen
Beef wellington is more appetizing that his food im sure.
I grew up in Taipei before coming to the West and Shark Fin is not a common everyday cousin like Curry in India, it's more like for the Rich( the way it makes them feel when they can have Shark Fin and others can't ). Taiwan is famous for its Street Vendor Delicacy and Night Market food, why would you pick a freaking Shark Fin as a representation of Taiwan food. It's not even close.
Chiang Kyle This clip is not for Food documentary. This is for documentary on shark hunting. Search "Shark bait" for more info.
If it’s taste like “plain glass noodle” then it make sense the Chinese like it so much. We Chinese love our noodle. I kinda want to tasted it now
They should ban this sort of food.
I'm a Chinese and this is my true experience.
I have alot more chance to get in touch with Shark Fin becuae of the ethics group I'm in. We can usually see shark fin in celebration or wedding dinner.
I was once in Thailand with my family at a Chinese restaurant and they ordered the Shark Fin soup, I told them how brutal it is to eat shark fin but they wouldn't listen especially the old folks, they showed how they not give a damn about it especially words coming out of a young boy's mouth. At the end I didn't take a single sip, but when I think of it the other way, it's the people who captured shark fin and dump it back to the ocean deserve hell, as well as the people who purchase bunch of it like restaurants, and finally the customers, I hate the position where I was standing, when I see there's some leftover shark fins in the pot, I can only think that the shark died for the Fin and if I don't eat and finish it, then it just died for nothing, there's nothing much I can do about it on the table, I want it to die for something, something meaningful at least, but I don't want the market grows because of me, I know how the market works, if people don't order Shark Fin and there's no needs in the market, fishmen won't capture and kill it. but I didn't order the shark fins, they did! So there's even more conflict for me on the table, there's nothing I can do for it, I can't convince my family or other people who host the celebration, they will only think im a idiot starting with nonsense! I'm fine with eating Shark If we capture the whole thing and kill it humanely before we eat it, but that doesn't happen often so the best we can do is just to promote banning shark from getting killed just for its fins.
My grandmother has the same attitude. Instead of buying a water filter or something like that for home, she instead buys the individual plastic water bottles one might buy from, say, a fast-food store. She then chucks them in the garbage. I asked her why she doesn't recycle them, and she said she didn't care. I then asked does she care about the environment and future generations? She said no.
I'm happy you're against the fin soup, but I'd never talk my family members again if they did this. They wouldn't have to listen to me, as I'd never speak to them again anyways.
"At the end I didn't take a single sip" bro it's already ordered you're wasting food, if you want the shark to live up to it's honour you might as well enjoy it instead of throwing away that soup like it's nothing
@@woodbrettm must be hard for you to hear your grandma don't care about you, a future generation
This is why I don't grant respect nor kindness to anyone older than me by default, nor do I grant disrespect to anyone younger than me.
Honestly, it's the older folks that are the ones constantly demanding respect when they've done nothing deserving of anyone's respect.
There is hope though people! According to recent studies, the worldwide market demand for sharkfin soup is been in rapid decline in the past couple of years. It was also shown that many Chinese are now starting to understand what shark finning has been doing on the shark populations. Sure there are still areas like Costa rica where black market shark dealing is going on but on a whole, shark fins are in demand like they used to be in the 90's.
People saying it’s blend and it’s not worth it but at the end of the day us Asians finds it delicious. The texture of the fin is unique and elegant.
I expect everyone who feel bad for the shark because it is killed and eaten to give up eating meat
Why?
+Sunny shah Look how the fins are actually harvested, Gordon has a video about that, then you know what we are talking about
+Gabrielle Marin (YoshiLikesCandy) so is most of western meat industries
+Roronoa Zoro I'm not going to try to defend factory farming but the animals arent left alive, 99% of the meat isnt wasted, and the farms arent nearly as detrimental to ecosystems.
+Sunny shah its the fact that sharks are dismembered while still alive and that they are being hunted to extinction.
The classic “can I get a pen and some paper trick” to the sneak, legend
Explain please
In the rest of the episode he manages to squeeze through and speak to the diners! That's why I love Gordon. Not only is he an incredible decorated chef who seriously cares about food, he also happens to be an effective journalist; unafraid to go where he's not permitted to get information. Gordon breaks the rules in all the right places.
Shark fins taste good you just need to season it. Catch sharks all the time in cali with my dad and we cook everything and leave no waste
ive had it once, can confirm it tastes like nothing. dunno why people eat this crap
MinGi Song for its benefits apparently
Trevor Morgan rude I can say the same to you
As opposed to Americans who live in McMansions and guzzle insane amounts of gas for their SUVs and use up the most amount of electricity in the world and throw out perfectly good food, right?
>chinese
cool.
3:33 when you're at a family gig and your girl wants to start an argument 😂
The sign reads: Flavoured Hot Water & Shit
Ram 👍
I had tons of shark fin soup as a kid, I miss it, but if you asked me what it tasted like, all I could remember was it was good. The way Ramsay described it as no taste, and the soup base is what makes it taste good rekindled my memory: so right.
Please Don't eat anymore shark, the hunting practices are cruel and wasteful, it's a dishonorable trade and we should have nothing to do with it when there are so many better options...
@@proudfathervince6835 a lot of it is imitation shark. It's really good and has a strong umami-like flavour.
@thanosofthecommunistdruzhi9107 well that's fine, that's like cheese and vegan cheese. One is made differently and less cruel. (Not a vegan.) So my point still stands, don't eat shark. It's fucked how they butcher them.
Why shark fin soup? Cause it's expensive and rare - it's a status symbol. Same reason women want a diamond ring. Same reason people buy SUVs and never drive off road...
Killing off a living organism is SUCH A VANITY FAIR right? Right? Okay, this is where you get your mind straight.
MtEdeNLov3R Unfortunately it's true. People disregard the suffering of living things for the sake of status. Such is the fate of many animals, whether it be shark fin soup, exotic furs/leathers, exotic pet trade. Fellow humans, as well, do not escape this fate, as can be seen from the stratification of wealth, human trafficking/sex trade, and exploitation of the poor.
Humans just have no regard for living things, including our fellow man.
