im 31 life has been full of loss and self destructive behaviors from career to relationships. recently diagnosed with
ADHD after a family intervention. I truly believed i was a terrible person. But since being diagnosed and seeing videos on the science behind it and most importantly reading comments of people going through the same struggles ive had my entire life has helped me so much to understand im not alone, and helped me to go from a mindset of telling myself and truly believing i am just a POS person who doesnt care about anyone or myself to a mindset of understanding that the mental struggles and waves of no care and lack of motivation are not just because im a horrible person but in fact are something i cannot control. but with the help of my family and people on the internet that share their stories my mindset is greatly improving and my hope to be able to live a normal life and win the daily battle within myself is returning. I never wanted to believe i was the horrible person i was telling myself i was but without any understanding of my disorder i had nothing to blame but my character. I know that this is something that will come in waves and im still responsible for my decisions of the past and future, but it has helped restore hope to live a normal goal oriented life. God bless everyone in the comments that shares their stories and people who deal with these struggles who think they are alone or think they are just a bad person.

The music in this video is too distracting. Hard to listen to and absorb the information.

It's kind of ironic you make a video about adhd and put music on it, which sounds as loud as the conversation itself. So hard to pay attention to anything. I appreciate the work, but at the end of the video I couldn't even remember what was said.

The relationship between these two conditions has always been unclear to me until now. Thanks so much for this awesome resource!!

For someone with ADHD the background music was really distracting and made the video difficult to follow.

I just had my first psych eval today and the Dr. leaned into depression more than ADHD which was surprising because I felt like I exhibited more symptoms of ADHD/autism. I basically feel like I'm constantly searching for things to grab my attention and literally cannot make myself do things that are uninteresting to me. I hyperfocus on interesting (and sometimes unnecessary) tasks trading that time for something I objectively should be doing. I also have a pretty good grasp of my mood day to day, year to year. While I have struggled with depression it stems from a feeling of lostness with respect to finding things I enjoy doing and spending my time doing things I should be doing. I thought it was classic ADHD. Am I wrong? Was prescribed Lexapro but am hesitant on following this line of reasoning from the Dr.

Hi, wondering what ended up happening with your diagnosis? I’m in the same situation - also prescribed Lexapro, but resonate so much with ADHD symptoms. I thought maybe the depression could be a result of ADHD, so was surprised at how quickly I was prescribed meds for depression. Was asked to provide interviews and need to take additional tests for ADHD.

@@killertofu88 Eventually we landed on ADHD after about 4 months. Bumped up the Lexapro dosage after a month and had no effects whatsoever after the second month even, positive or negative. Then we tried Strattera increasing the dosage after another month and had no impact again. Then my psychiatrist started to lean more toward ADHD and prescribed methylphenidate which was a step in the right direction. After a couple dosage increases and switching to Concerta I really started noticing improvements but still not where I wanted to be. Then we switched to Adderall XR 30mg which was even more helpful but was making my stomach feel really tore up even with eating appropriately and sometimes causing some mood instability. Switched to IR which helped a lot for some reason. Then switched to Vyvanse to try a stimulant without the levoamphetamine because I was still getting some mood instability. Been on 70mg Vyvanse for about 4 months and it has been really great. It is way more gentle than Adderall was and causing pretty much no negative side effects after I got a routine down.
My psychiatrist explained to me that with people who exhibit a good mixture of depression and ADHD symptoms (which can be pretty easily interpreted as one or the other) they like to try something like an SSRI or SNRI first with the risk associated with stimulant medication. I was willing to try that because they have a process and if the Lexapro or Strattera were to cause any negative effects I would just taper back down to nothing pretty quickly given the short time taking the medication. Patience is key. Also finding someone willing to listen is also important. Good luck!
