How To: Coolant Flush and Exchange for Motorcycles / Engine Ice Coolant

Today I am going to show you how to conduct a coolant flush in order to change over to a new coolant on your motorcycle. I will be conducting this on my 2018 KTM 390 Duke but the procedure is fairly similar for most motorcycles. The coolant of choice for this video is Engine Ice performance coolant. Always refer to your owners manual for any special details your bike may need while performing this operation.

We run engine ice in Florida and it works great. btw - there is probably another bleeder bolt up high on the radiator that will allow draining and aid refill.

I don't know if its this way with the 390, but on some engines you have to continually have a stream coming out of the bleeder so it doesn't do a backpull of air when the coolant rests into the bottom of the engine. Probably fine not to on this bike but something to think about if your getting air pockets
Thanks for sharing 👍. I spent £50 on Spal radiator fan ( direct fit once you swop out the connector hood) as the stock one prevents the air flowing though a large section of the radiator! Best upgrade to date for me given how noisy and how long the stock fan runs for even when moving in slow traffic - even if the weather is not that hot!
Do you have a 1st or 2nd gen bike
Mine is the 2017 .... which looks likes yours. KTM sold a batch of 50 in the U.K. for @£3000 at the end of 2017 so I bagged one - they had zero miles but had been pre registered. At that price it was too good to miss. 2 years later and I’m still loving it!
@@gressshap8200 one day I may have to consider doing the fan mod. It gets hot here during the summer
Whats does the resevoir actually do?
“Lean right” means leaned to the right for the air to rise to the highest point which would, at that point, be the bleed bolt.
I get that but it says there will be bubbles coming out and if you lean it right to make it the highest point you will never see that because the fluid won't reach.
The method I used still worked just fine. Went out on a 100 mile ride yesterday and its performing just fine.
Not sure this helps as much with a coolant change but have you tried the trick of using a flashlight from behind to be able to clearly see the coolant level on gauge window?
Yes I do that as well but while the fairing is off doing this procedure it was easier to mark it and use that reference until I was done. Thanks for the feedback!

Yes it runs a tad cooler and takes longer for Temps to rise while sitting in traffic.

But if it takes 2 flushes to completely flush out your old green coolant with the white distilled water...
It should it also take 2 flushes to completely flush out your white distilled water with the new blue engine ice right...?
I feel you still have heaps of distilled water left in your system if you top it up now... Don't you think so?
Not enough to make a huge difference. If anything you would only be diluting the engine ice slightly. Freeze point on engine ice is -28F. I don't know anyone who would operate their street bike in weather that cold 🤣. The reason you want all the green gone is because you know it's all out at that point and the two coolants do not mix well together.
What’s the green coolant isn’t motul pink for this bike
I believe the pink motul was not used in bikes for the US.
What adavantege ice coolent oil for duke 390
Its better at heat dissipation than standard coolants, so the bike tends to require less fan use and when the fan does run its usually for just short periods.

What is the main cooling effect of engine ice did you find? Is it the reduction of heat quickly or the coolant gets heated lately? Like I have been using Engine ice for the past one week. I couldn't tell the difference due to the weather maybe.
I felt like my fan kicked on less often and when it did run it was for shorter periods of time
In my KTM 300 EXC in florida/summer without ICE it would blow off a lot of coolant every ride. with ICE I didnt loose much ever with normal riding. I run it on every water cooled bike/atv. well worth it. on ATV the fan was on constantly before ICE - on ICE the fans seldomly kick on.
Does this apply for the 1190 RC8
Obviously drain and fill locations will be different but the steps are universal themselves.
Can you do this with normal water??
You shouldn't do it with anything but distilled water. Regular water has a ton of minerals in it that will leave a scaling residue in your radiator and motor which can lead to a breakdown of the parts and ineffective cooling.
Was there a noticeable difference in time to kick fan on or overall operating temperatures?
Yes there's a noticeable difference, its nothing out of this world but it will dissipate heat much faster. I wouldn't say it's slower to warm up by much, but at a traffic light it will stay cooler longer and thr fan won't run quite as long
@@MotoMedicine904 Good to know 👍, I just ordered a 2 bar radiator cap with a Guage built in for my KTM 450, It's probably past time to change my coolant anyways so I guess it will be the perfect time to test it. I am racing this thing in a GNCC style event so I want to be sure and take any WORTHY steps to keep it in the best mechanical shape possible.
When u first put engine ice in your KTM DID IT QUICKLY RuN hot?
This happened to me too. Did you manage to find the issue?
Sounds like an air pocket. Squeeze the hoses with the cap off to help move out any trapped air.
How much coolant did you have to put in total including the coolant reservoir?
It was right about 1.7 liters. Engine Ice comes in 1/2 gallon bottles so one bottle is enough with a tad extra.

Should i flush the coolant if my new coolant is the same color?
If its the same coolant Type then you don't have to flush but it's a good idea to flush the system to make sure it's fully clean and will continue to be as efficient as possible
How often do you recommend flushing old coolant and adding new coolant? Every 2 years?
2-3 years or 24k miles is probably a more than safe bet. The coolant won’t likely go bad for quite some time beyond that but it will keep inner components happier
@@MotoMedicine904 I always thought coolant would last forever. At least on my previous twin cylinder bikes. I hadn't thought about the other lubricant qualities of the coolant.

So it’s ok to start the bike for a little bit with no coolant?
There should always be fluid in the system when it's started wether thats coolant or water being used to flush it. Never dry though
You can either use expensive Wuerth Radiator flush or cheap coco cola/pepsi and then use distill water or vinegar
If you flush it twice just with distilled water doesn't it mean that when you finally fill it up with coolant, it'll still have too much water in the system? Same logic as flushing the old coolant, don't you need to flush all the water?
Not much is going to remain in the system, not enough to cause any harm. If you're using a 50/50 mix of coolant then you may end up at 60/40 at worst. Unless you plan to ride in below freezing weather there's no worry. A ratio that favors more water will typically cool better.
Can i use tap water
Not a good idea. Tap water has tons of minerals in it that can leave deposits in your coolant system.

For the life of me I can't understand why this bike would come with "green" coolant from the factory when KTM recommends Motorex 3.0 pink fluid. I asked our local dealership how that affects the warranty if something goes wrong with the cooling system (ex: leaks, water pump, thermostat etc). They had no answers at all. Basically, good luck with that...
It must be a regional thing. Seems like all the bikes sold in the US have green coolant. I mean it does a fine job but engine ice is definitely a little better
@@MotoMedicine904 - Definitely. We already flushed it at 2000 miles and replaced with Ice.
