In this video, we go over the differences between coolant and anti-freeze, and who should actually use what based on the climate where you live. Then we show you the full process of cleaning the entire cooling system on your sport bike with a mild acidic solution, then flushing it out and replacing it with fresh new coolant.

I was in the middle, try to clip the hose without flushing. And then, the clip wouldn't want to clip anymore. I was taking a break and look at videos more efficient that the one's I've look. I fall on yours.

That was the best flush video I have found. I was prepping for the track where no glycol is allowed...I used distilled and Purple mixed ....38 ozs distilled 4.5 ozs Purple. I did the overkill triple flush. Fan came on at 220 and sitting idle stayed at 218 2006 CBR 4fi / ... Overkill , but it was first flush with used bike.

On a GoldWing there is always about 3/4 +/- of a quart that remains in the system after draining. I flush with 2 quarts of new coolant and dispose. Also if coolant contains silicates it can be death to the coolant pump. Best to check owners manual for ingredients known to cause damage.
you have to remove the swing arm on the cbr 1000th to get to the reserve tank lol. I just got a siphon vacuum hose from h.f. which works great. don't have to disconnect any hoses

Hey, i have a question. I have a light green coloured coolant currently on my bike. I just got this new coolant that has a much darkee green color. Theyre both suposed to be green. Is it ok to mix them?

Hi there... this is very informative, thanks for such a great video. I am in Africa and as usual, we do have hot weather. Is it necessary to mix the coolant with distilled water?
It depends on the coolant you buy. Some comes in a concentrated form that needs to be mixed with distilled water and others come premixed so it isn't needed. It varies by manufacturer so its best to just reed the label and see if it calls for dilution.
Thank you for your video when the motorcycle is cool with the thermostat allow you to put that distilled water and the coolant in . In other words, will it go from the cooling neck straight to the radiator?

I followed all your steps but when I reattached the overflow tank and filled it, coolant started coming out of the hose that leads to the bottom of the reservoir tank. I have a 2003 Honda car 954rr... pls help
Just a quick adendum: The top-down hose direct flush has its own reason of existance.
When some parts corrode or really big flaky deposits appear (particularly in old bikes that haven't run that much or just bikes that have been sitting for a while), it is preferable to use this approach, as forcing those flakes and deposits in an anti-gravity way by running the bike may have them clogging up your system, particularly in smaller diameter tubes and parts. In some cases, it may even damage the water pump, and this can be a bummer if you have just replaced it.
It even saves you time and distiled water, particularly if you know the bike well and are able to do this whilst by-passing the thermostat, so you get the whole circuit. Although if you do this with tap water, I'd recomend flushing it at least once with distiled water before you put your coolant.
Hey Aaron great video. Very informative by the way. Just subscribed also. I ride a Kawasaki Vulcan 750. My repair manual mentions bleeding the system of air while slowly filling with new coolant. I use Engine Ice Btw. Any advice would certainly be appreciated.

2 questions how do you make a 50/50 mix of distilled water and vinegar to flush out the system ? Is it as easy as pouring half water and half distilled vinegar in an empty soda bottle like shown in the video ? Also is this mix safe for aluminum engines ?

Hi Neil. Unfortunately, we don't have access to every vehicle so we can do individual how-to videos but the procedure for this should be the same across the board. Each machine may have different drainage points or air bleeds though. The best suggestion would be to consult your service manual to see. Thank you.
Is distilled white vinegar same as Alcohol vinegar? Where I live we have only this Alcohol vinegar that is clear colour, other ones are like apple etc.
Also, this one has 9% acid.

Help please. While blipping to get rid of the air bubbles (wasn't able to get rid of all of them) I noticed that as the bike got warmer the coolant was rising to the point where it almost spilled out had I not killed the engine. When the bike cools down the coolant starts going back down again.
What I'm worried about is after I cap it off and while I'm riding, what if the coolant rises again with the cap on it and the pressure would build up and something disastrous can happen.
Do help please.
I thought on the final step when "burping" the air out of the system, the radiator cap should be off to let the trapped air escape? It's what I've seen in some other videos. Should the cap ALWAYS be on every time this video says turn the bike on?
Find the bleeder screw on your bike and leave the rad cap on.

Re: which temp you're wanting...what you're doing is waiting for the thermostat to open so as to fully open the system, circulating the coolant from within the engine block into the radiators as well. Each bike is different, as are their thermostats. You should be able to check your manual and find the numbers on your personal bike. As an rough idea, think that most thermostats begin to open around 180* and are fully open at about 200*-205*. Hope this helps.BB.com

Little confused. Appears you drained out all the old coolant (approx 2.5-3L) and then used just 2L of distilled water/vinegar mix. This is safe to have so little fluid in the radiator? Many thanks, in advance.

Hi Guys, Out of all the coolant changes on UA-cam this one is the most professional one I've come across it give me confidence to do it myself.The only question i have - Distilled white vinegar l can not find it, searched all major supermarket and auto stores, All we have in Australia is white vinegar and Glitz Green Cleaning Vinegar ,can on of these be a replacement for distilled white vinegar or are they it ????? distilled water can be found but we've got a shit lot of demineralised water, I've been told that they are the same??

Here are the details...The term "distilled vinegar" is something of a misnomer, because it is not produced by distillation but by fermentation of distilled alcohol. The fermentate is diluted to produce a colorless solution of 5% to 8% acetic acid in water, with a pH of about 2.4. This is variously known as distilled spirit, "virgin" vinegar,[8] or white vinegar, and is used in cooking, baking, meat preservation, as well as for medicinal, laboratory, and cleaning purposes. Distilled water is simply water that has many of its impurities removed through distillation. Distillation involves boiling the water and then condensing the into a clean container. I have a 2011 triumph Daytona 675, last time I took it for a ride, the coolant was boiling and spilling out of my ride.
I tried riding it back home and the engine was overheating to the point where temp light came on, pulled over, let bike cool for hour and half, got back on hwy, within 10 mins, high temp light came back on- towed bike home. any ideas or suggestions. thanks

Did you have to put the rad cap back while running the engine on the last part? Some say you don't put the cap for 10 mins idling.
We leave the cap off,,,it seems to help with air bubbles.. giving the air an escape....sort of like burping the system. But every setup is different and it may help or not.
My water expansion tank is empty ( is this normal ?) .. radiator has got water and my bike doesn't overheat ..should I be concerned

yes, but it can take some time and it depends on the type of bike you have. some engines have multiple spots for you to bleed air from the cooling system. you open up a bolt passage and bleed the coolant through very similar to bleeding brakes. You can usually reference your owners manual to see if you need to. Thanks for the great feedback!

Some of the stuff was overlooked burping and tighten cap otherwise boiling overflow ...also be SURE your fan is kicking in at bout 220. Be sure to know the specs for your BIKE so if it's 70 oz out be sure 70oz goes back in. If you are going to the track non Glycol Royal Purple with straight distilled has been working read directions 2 oz per quart of distilled so a 12 0z bottle would be good for most bikes. 11$ a bottle 1$ for a gallon of distilled...ONLY use this if you are track riding in case of overflow... anti freeze us like oil track will be hard to clean. AND IT FREEZES SO DUMP IT BEFORE FREEZING WEATHER UNLESS YOU LIVE IN A WARM AREA WITH NOTHING BELOW 32 F. If you can't get to the overflow tank ...try a shop vac and a piece of small fuel line duct taped into a makeshift hose, and try sucking it out. I tried it... it worked ...otherwise you may be removing your tank more fairing etc...Remember the green stuff is anti freeze not anti over heat. Be sure the pump is strong , fan is working and the dumpflush is fairly clear...

What's the scientific reason to flush the cooling system w vinegar? other than to clean or flush cooling system n yes I'm new at this just got my first bike lol
Vinegar is acidic, it helps to remove limescale, rust, and other solid particles inside your cooling system, but vinegar itself may attack the metal parts of your system, so after using vinegar, do not wait for hours, you need to flush the system to remove the vinegar. Flush it with water, then you can fill it up with the coolant solution.
After the cleansing step, do you have to flush it again with distilled water or you can add the coolant right away?
+NiRMALCARES Hey NiRMAL,You don't have to, but if your system is already been opened, and flushing coolant is something you do every other year, the extra step just makes it just that much cleaner inside. I would say it won't need it since it's just a plastic container technically unless it's really dirty then yeah just to clean it up but if not it's fine

How long does it take for the fan to come on? I was running it for 40 minutes until the radiator hoses were hot to touch, but I gave up as the fan didn't come on.

How do you get the rest of the air out of the system? Is their a valve to open to "Burp" the closed system of all the air..or..?
Many bikes will have multiple ports on the cylinder or cases to open and help purge any air. I'd consult your owners manual to see if you have any that we haven't covered in this video.
Hey Aaron. It's me again. So sorry to keep bugging you. Question. Need to change my plug wires on my 06 Vulcan 750. Could I use those 8mm Accel wires or should I stick with OEM NGK wires. Any advice buddy?

Already the right length, with all fittings and connectors facing the correct direction, proper gauge wires, etc.Accel makes a great product, but their universal kit would be something that I'd use on a custom machine that the OEM didn't make a set for. Where are the drain coolant plugs on the Honda VTX1300R 2006 motorcycle

Usually only one drain, on the engine block, at the base of the water pump cover. Not sure exactly where on the VTX's. Just check your manual and it'll tell you the specifics re: where's the drain bolt, torque values upon closing up the system, quantities of fluid, etc. Thanks for watching our videos and the question. No youre fine. Just make sure its between the lines.
Engine running temperature is set by the thermostat and not 20deg cooler by some promoted brand of coolant!

+the goog Hey Goog,If you take your time, and wait for things to cool down before you proceed, maybe a couple of hours. Set aside a little time one day and do it. The job is not hard, but does take time. Just remember that you're dealing with a hot liquid and scalds are no joke! Safety first. Think of it this way. Water that is just 156* will cause a third degree burn in one second, and you're dealing with coolant that is well over 200*, so please take your time. So my question is this: If you use vinager and distilled water to cleanse, and then flush the agent out, how do you know that you've gotten all of the agent out ?
