At iasca finals 2006, there was a truck filled with rainbow components , mounted with billet brackets. Looked amazing but sounded like crap (no imaging or sound stage). Sat in Biggs and Eldridges vehicles, very neat. The Buick was like IMAX. The 4runner was completely anechoeic , you couldn't even hear your own voice when talking inside. 😁👍
I remember seeing that van driving around at the time it was one of the only few vehicles that could over power my system.. the orion 280gx was my 1st amplifier also I used to drive around waiting to see how far away it took for people to start looking for where the source was, while it was nothing like your van but I loved my blow thru's cuz they were very deceitful hidden under the truck tonneau covers but for best sounding inside I loved my full size blazer and suburban walled out builds
I can’t stress how amazing good imaging is with passive crossovers there are often signal delays at, and around the crossover frequencies. It is unavoidable it is just the side effect of using passive crossover. I would always recommend a DSP. I use the Dayton audio DSP-408 for only 160 bucks and it is superb for the price. Once you adjust the timing for each woofer and tweeter the imaging is superb

Small note; In your example you were measuring the DC resistance of the speaker, not the impedance. The nominal impedance will always be higher than the Re.
My head unit has time alignment. So I’m doing a simple 4ch and mono amp setup with 6x9 coaxials in the back and 6.5 components up front. I went with the Sony Mobile ES which are excellent speakers for the price.
Been following you a long time. your content is top notch, and your subscriber success is the direct result of pounding the pavement on here. Make sure to mention the faux-component systems that do have 2 drivers, but don't have a real crossover. Just a HPF on the tweeter wired inline with woofer.
Not to mention the quality of the head unit. The best speakers in the world aren't going to help if they're wired to a 1992 Audiovox head unit from O'Rielly's
I currently installed polk audio after had reference ive thought of focal and tried morel but im liking these polk db's...do you know if the polk mm's would be better..how do they compare to kappas
I just keep learning more new car audio stuff. Sadly both of my cars got ruined by the previous owner by joining the Tweeter with the Woofer in the same wires. If that makes any sense. I initially thought it was the crappy stereos I have in each car that made it lack bass and crackle. But thanks to this I now know what it is
Do the factory components have a xover installed somewhere? Or does the head unit supply separate channels for the rtweeters & door speakers? Trying to g Figure out how many channels I need for a dsp/amp . Thanks
pros and cons to both designs. Assuming the drivers and crossovers are the same then: 1) Coaxial speakers have the benefit of better integration, less lobing, suck-out and destructive interference at the cross-over frequency but may have some intermodulation distortion because the tweeter is effectively mounted on a constantly moving surface i.e. the mid-woofer cone. Also, they are less flexible in terms of placement. 2) Component speakers may suffer lobing and comb-filtering if the tweeter is placed too far away from the mid-woofer but you do get the flexibility of tweeter placement - just don't place them more than 1/2 wavelength away from each other.
My 02 E320 had the Bose system. I think it sounded great. Crisp, clear, and just the right amount of bass, but all the drivers were paper so time kicked there ass.
4 amps, 2 pairs of cross-overs. Mid-bass in rear, side body panel mostly hidden by rear seat bottom and matched tweets beside them, tweets to side of rear seat back. Mid-range in front doors, tweets in place of phase plug, factory front door/A-pillar tweets. 1 SL7 12" Sub in trunk. All stuffed in a 2000 Grand Prix GTP Daytona 500. Miss the old girl !
ABOlsen69X I miss both the 6.5 and the 4.0 sets. I ran them in a custom designed passive crossover that was in a 1989 Grand Prix. I also had their Pro 10” sub. I ran all of that with a Orion 425 HCCA. I had the 10”’s in the rear quarters, the 6.5” in the doors and the fours in the kick panels along with the tweeters.
Nice info man ..... I was like " I'm going to get component speakers, " ... Looked up focal components.. wtf $.?.!!!... Then I looked at alpine.... " Dam... Ughhh.. how about S series coaxial ?... Oh ok pretty good" .... $400 worth of 2, 6x9 and 4, 6.5, and 3.5 dash tweeter replacements, and some sound deadening material and speaker baffles, stock head unit, no amp and a weekends install ... Nice !!!!!... It make my pant leg move from base from front door speakers... I am thinking that having the tweeter not present in the front door might equal better sound stage but it's hard to say without a side by side comparison...an amp will play a big part of next step... High def reproduction or smart self balancing amp.. we will see
I'm running a component with crossover set up. Would I need to set my crossover on my amp and head unit? Or should I turn them off? And let the crossover from the components do their job?
My truck speakers were going out so I changed them out with 50 watt rms 6×8 yeah ford truck factory everything else the sound was so much better and no distortion ontell I hit max volume so worked for me
In the crossover you are holding I see a "Bi-amp" (ing) input which means that you can drive all drivers individually meaning you can dip the tweeter level all you want as it will have a designated amp channel driving it. Just mentioning cause it does not get mentioned in the video. Am Mentioning this I have often seen people simply deciding to not use the crossover and connecting the drivers directly to the amp and call it a day, which is not the best solution acoustically to put it mildly... :-) In this case of "direct connection" you need to use Dsp or a good parametric equalizer in order to correct the frequency plot as a crossover is not only meant to separate the frequency content so the tweeter does not get bass frequencies and vice versa for the woofer but also to balance the frequency plot of the driver as a driver by it self in very (very) rare cases needs no frequency response correction. So This is general information, not directed to the OP of the video which I find wonderful and making superb videos.
JL audio is the best speakers and amps going right now. I can tell you I have been listening and putting together systems in both home and car and vans and back in the 80's it was ADS and Concord head units, then smoother came and went, but right now, the cleanest power and the most accurate speakers are being made by JL audio. Try to by the best speakers they make and match up the power with the amp that can also power the subwoofer also by JL audio. It sounds so good to have everything matched up from that one company. Chose whatever head unit you like, I prefer the Pioneer but that can change from year to year, the JL audio will not be changing. I am very said at the moment because I am stepping into a Lexus that comes with Mark Levinson sound system and it is not nearly as nice as the JL audio I'm leaving behind in my old Honda.

Sure like to know what the hell you're talking about. I wasn't aware I was missing out on that much music. 😮
You’re a good man. Good explanation of things. Awesome.
Please review sound ordinance products!!! I mean, you’re already halfway there by having Crutchfield as a sponsor
I only run active my buddy had to convince me to run it that way but he convinced me and I'll tell you I'll never run passive again and I'll only run front active speakers in my cars now. I have no rear speakers and just a subwoofer and it sounds like surround sound in my car it's amazing!
Had a component set focal k2p 6.5 ,they sound awesome, they need power and of course the passive crossover they are bright but well worth the money and they need a lot of power to give you amazing concert sound in your car.He would have my business because he understands the full spectrum of install.
Thanks for your wonderful videos. You explain complicated stuff in a language that I understand.
I just installed a set of component speakers today without being powered by an amplifier but straight from the head unit. I instantly noticed loss of power in my system and I'm using a vintage JL Audio crossover on my components. I'm definitely going to install a second amplifier.
Man i have exactly same Focal set sitting on the shelf next to me... Can't wait to install them! Thanks for vid.
I have the older ones 165krx2. Have you seen the new utopia m series?
@@johnclark3067 Utopia is next level...Soundwise AND moneywise... Currently I'm running the Focal AS series (entry level components) so K2 Power will be fairly big step up for me. Btw how do you like your's?
@@DagnisCC Mine are probably not even broken in yet. I am going to buy the 3" mids and go three-way active soon. Looking at Zapco for a 6 x 100 class ab amp.
@@johnclark3067 Yeah 3 way front is way to go. I will feed mine from Mosconi 130.4 :)
Ive had these exact same set up. Such bad ass speakers
I love the sound focal gives.
every time i watch a video to understand watts to ohms to amps i get more confused than before i watch them.
RCA's and speaker termimals are measured with AC on amps. Sine wave runs will show clipping for the tune, just make sure all inputs measure within 1volt👌
DVD wire doagramfor car
Watt = power (or ability to take power)
Ohms = resistance of the speaker (actually impedance = complex resistance).
how many "what"s in this video?
Watts law is P=VI ohms law is V=IR
I see the Xtant on the shelf in the background. I miss those day and setting up PQM modules. I would love to get a hold of some working units as I think they made one hell of an amp!
Luv the video...as many others I saw over the time...
Greetings from Portugal...
Or use quality coaxials.
My opinion coaxials are better rhen components.
Do you all use the DSP in your Headunit without having to get a seperate DSP?
I bought Rockford Fosgate T2652-S 6-1/2" 2-way component speaker system
Cool video. I never knew about Crutchfield until now. I am doing a whole new system for my 67 mustang they literally have everything you need. They are amazing and so are your videos. Thanks for sharing
I just bought the focal flax and I’m installing them tomorrow on my 400 x 4 Rockford Fosgate power series amp
Along with my 1500 W by one Rockford Fosgate power series to my JL 12 W7
Central processing is gonna take place through a pioneer - touchscreen DVD
It’s gonna be a rockin good time
Small note; In your example you were measuring the DC resistance of the speaker, not the impedance. The nominal impedance will always be higher than the Re.
It’s would help when you live in America and have American car. Using Crutchfield!
My head unit has time alignment. So I’m doing a simple 4ch and mono amp setup with 6x9 coaxials in the back and 6.5 components up front. I went with the Sony Mobile ES which are excellent speakers for the price.
Congratulations on your new sponsorship from crutchfield.mid 90’ shopper from them
That Company Makes Really Nice Home Audio Speakers as Well
Thank you for your videos. Video by video your helping me master the art of car audio.
CarAudioFabrication to car audio is like what Fitment Industries is to wheels and tires

Brilliant! Just what I was looking for when deciding to run active or passive. Really great info!
Omg thank u ...checking out your site. An audio place has jacked up (in a bad way) my Levinson system
I’m a Polk audio and focal fan for my mids and highs, always loved the crispness of the Polk audio
I currently installed polk audio after had reference ive thought of focal and tried morel but im liking these polk db's...do you know if the polk mm's would be better..how do they compare to kappas
A very good video.
A lot of good information.
A component set will give you a much cleaner sound.
I just keep learning more new car audio stuff.
Sadly both of my cars got ruined by the previous owner by joining the Tweeter with the Woofer in the same wires. If that makes any sense. I initially thought it was the crappy stereos I have in each car that made it lack bass and crackle. But thanks to this I now know what it is
Did you ever review the Rockford Fosgate P165-SE ? I am looking into purchasing those in the future.
I had a krx set a few years ago, but I sold it because the tweeter was so harsh for me. I bought a rainbow set. Its sound is much better for me.
what's a rainbow set?
Thank you by picking on the bottom link from Crutchfield you save me a digital 20 bucks on my rotary when Kenwood 1701 speakers
It would be nice if you made a video on how and where to mount those bigger crossover networks
Do the factory components have a xover installed somewhere? Or does the head unit supply separate channels for the rtweeters & door speakers? Trying to g
Figure out how many channels I need for a dsp/amp . Thanks
Mark thanks for all the videos man ive learned alot! Keep it up my man!
Thanks for being a part of the community and watching!
pros and cons to both designs.
Vito Corleone Laughs in polypropylene.
Just found your channel, great vids. Tangible, direct, easy to understand, informative, & well put together. Nice job, keep it up👍🏼.
I have huge crush on your channel again, now that I've got some ideas on upgrading my OEM systems. Great videos, Mark!
i got rid of the focal tweeters in the dash and put in a focal 3 inch coaxial speaker wired on full range to crossover and the sound is 100X better.
You Sir are a true Pro!
I bought my first component set back in the early 90’s. It was the first generation Boston Acoustics Pro series.
Great speakers. Still miss my 5.5
ABOlsen69X I miss both the 6.5 and the 4.0 sets. I ran them in a custom designed passive crossover that was in a 1989 Grand Prix. I also had their Pro 10” sub. I ran all of that with a Orion 425 HCCA. I had the 10”’s in the rear quarters, the 6.5” in the doors and the fours in the kick panels along with the tweeters.
gr8 knowledge/info/explanation process
Good video, but I wish you would’ve covered bi-amping the passive crossover especially since that red tag was in most of the shots of the crossover.
I'll explain biamping in a future video. Lots of information in this one and wanted to keep it somewhat basic.
This helped me so much. Thank you!
So you basically always go with full range signal from the amp if you use the passive crossover? No hpf?
I started out with audio controls good starter dsp
Cheers, great info. Im gonna get focals coaxial cos I dont want a major upgrade
My truck speakers were going out so I changed them out with 50 watt rms 6×8 yeah ford truck factory everything else the sound was so much better and no distortion ontell I hit max volume so worked for me
Thanks Mark! Love how you explain how systems and devices work!
I've also had those passive crossovers blow up. A throw amps into protect.
Nice Focal component set. I have those in my truck. Awesome sound. Mine are a little older though, I think around 2010.
with the enclosed xovers? stupidest thing I ever did in my life was give away mine.
In this case of "direct connection" you need to use Dsp or a good parametric equalizer in order to correct the frequency plot as a crossover is not only meant to separate the frequency content so the tweeter does not get bass frequencies and vice versa for the woofer but also to balance the frequency plot of the driver as a driver by it self in very (very) rare cases needs no frequency response correction.
So
This is general information, not directed to the OP of the video which I find wonderful and making superb videos.
Thanks again Mark!
Excellent explanation! Thank you
Hey mark can you put a component set in the rear doors you haven’t covered this. At least none of the videos I’ve seen cover this
Great video...just got into this as a hobby a couple of years ago and your channel has been greatly appreciated...Parts Express or Dayton Audio ought to sponsor a video or 2 :)
I know this video is old but one question for you. What's the meaning behind the power rating for the crossover? Do you base it on the connected speakers?
pleaseeeee bro i need a vid on compression drivers whats the best what do i have to look for and how and where do i mount them
Many choices hlcd drivers/waveguides
Please point me to a video of you showing how to wire the components and crossover. I am installing kappa components in a Ridgeline with infinity amp and Teyes CC3 receiver. No idea how to add the crossover and wire using factory wiring for the speakers. Can you point me in right direction? Love your videos….
U are brilliant man!! Solved lot of my problems
