The first prototype of a bicycle was invented by a German guy. It was made popular by France, though.
Depends what you're thinking about. And how you define bicycle. Karl Drais made the draisienne long before the Michaux brothers made their first velocipède, but it was that famous "dandy horse" that you sat on and ran to move. the Michaud brothers and Pierre Lallement (another Frenchman) were the first to get the idea to put pedals on a draisienne.
Certain, without Karl Drais, the bicycle would have ben invented much later; so he can take credit for that. But does it made the draisienne a bicycle as we hear it?

(I'm a French person) For thoses that talk about the muslim issue that especialy France is having it's quite easy to understand but they are multiple things to say :
-1st Algeria and Morocco was before the 1950~1960 french colony and Islam always was very influent and practiced in theses contries. Since 1954 Algerian's independace war a lot of North-Affrican people have started to travel and install in France. Islam has never exist in France before. Today's Islam in France is almost exclusively practiced by theses people.
-2nd Algerian and Moroccan's influence on French society is real and is lived as a pain in the butt for a lot (real Native) French people since quite some times.
-3rd France has become worldwide known because of it's history and influence with events such as "la prise de la bastille"
That's why I guess we can say that in the Modern Western World it has become a symbol of Freedom and love. And Isis probably knows that if they can claim the decline of France then it would be a big victory for them.

As I said: they are similar, but also very different. Both Singapore and Norway have a population of ca. 5 million, both have a similarly sized economy highly based on shipping and oil (Singapore refining, Norway raw), etc. Both countries share a lot of the same circumstances, but yet have turned out so different; that is why I love comparing them.
