How Weak Are Cyclists?

- Pro cyclist vs bodybuilder. We know the pros can put out a lot of watts on the bike, but does that power translate to the gym? We’ve recruited lightweight climber Max Stedman (all 54kg of him!) to go head-to-head with our resident muscleman Brad in a series of strength challenges to find out just how weak cyclists really are!

Would you like to see Max 🚴 and Brad 🏋♂ in more videos?
Let’s do it 💪
Totally
Of course!
I love how people seemingly instantly pop up with insanely detailed sadistic plans to test the two.
Take the bodybuilder on the bike he won’t last 30min😝😂
As an ex bodybuilder I always thought cyclists were weak. I got to 20 stone and found walking upstairs a struggle to breath. Gave up bodybuilding and now 89kg and absolutely love cycling. Cyclists are hard as nails especially those of us that love hills.
20 stone and 89kgs in the same paragraph. Must be British :)
@@ollyrukes yes fella. Moving to cycling was more than just a change of hobby, it was a mindset change as well 👍🏼
(For all our European friends, 20 stone is 127 kg)
My knees and back are way happier since I switched from powerlifting to cycling.
Good fun. Cyclist has better extension / form on a couple of exercises. Brad is omg built strong. Both astounded me on plank and situps. Bravo.
3+mins on a plank for a guy Brad's size surely can't be seen as a loss. That's a cracking effort
Great to be on the channel again guys great fun as always 😋
Bring on round 2
Your BB, Brad Parker
Good job mate!
Nice work there Brad - If you were clipped in I reckon you would be north of 1600 watts on a sprint 💪⚡️
@@stephen_101 100% I’ve done more before 😋
@@theMosen thanks buddy
Big fan of yours Brad! Great to see you again in the GCN video.
Great to see both Max and Brad back on GCN again. Thanks guys for being such great sports and putting up with Hank.
Pull-up was like 6-0, Bodybuilder never cleared the bar
Looked like he was gonna point it out but wasn't allowed
Yeah. Brad's pull-ups were total rubbish - barely half the range. For me a proper pull-up is full range - chin over the bar with a brief pause and dead hang at the bottom. Slow tempo, no kipping.
@@inz_uzi I heard you shouldn't go all the way to the bottom, stopping with a slight angle is safer, but agreed about the chin.
@@ghislainbugnicourt3709 I think it's 100% safe to hang all the way down. Our ancestors lived on the trees so we should have no problems with that. Before you start pulling you need to go to active hang first - move your shoulders down. It's a good exercise in it's own. However if you are a total beginner you should be careful and do it gradually. Build your strength first.
I'd love to see you guys pit an Olympic track sprinter against Brad! That would be cool to see.
How do you think Brad would compare?
@@gcn I think he'd fair very well! But would equally be good to see how strong a sprinter is!
@@TheBrokenMountainBiker Well, now's time to find out!! 👉 ua-cam.com/video/vtmR-D35OAs/v-deo.html
Get Rob forstemann in😂
@@gcn I think Brad would lose, not because of the power but because of endurance. Clearly brad has massive power but being able to hold it would be his challenge against track sprinters
I'm 66 years old. And I was just concentrating on cycling and doing the odd weights session. But in February when I started working part time I decided to join a gym. A fitness gym. And I'm now stronger in myself and on the bike. I love watching these videos with Brad he's got a great personality and he's got great sportsmanship. I wish both Max and Brad the very best in there chosen sports 👍
These "whippet vs mastiff" competitions are silly and predictable, but quite entertaining. Thanks to the people involved for being good sports.
My thoughts exactly - pointless, but fun.
VERY impressed with Max core strength (re: sit-up with medecine ball) 👍
Cyclist i know are always impressed with how hard bodybuilding is and bodybuilders are always impressed be the mental fortitude it takes to do a long training ride. Shows that whatever you're unfamiliar with seems harder because its uncomfortable.
Love these comparisons. Max and Brad are top blokes.
👍
Love the video, bring on round 2 💪
Max and Brad are both superstars! More of them in videos please.
Great job max! I love both of you guys. Keep doing the challenge videos
I have to admit, that was fun to watch. I think the odds tipped in Brad's favor when you increased the weight of the medicine ball for the sit-ups. Max, you did awesome! Brad, you did great well! When my dad was in the Navy, he had the record for sit-ups, 500 sit-ups in 5 minutes. I just thought I would add that in.
Brilliant episode Brad and Max we got to get more of, fair play Brad is in seriously good shape really strong too.
That was SO much fun to watch!!! Yes - more of these, please!!! 👍😂
I love these vids, well done both 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
The bodybuilder uses a very short push-pull technique which is easier than the longer push-pull of the cyclist
this video made me feel better about being 173cm and 55kg. I love to climb and anytime other riders would see my build they would get excited to call me a climber, which is something I have always enjoyed in cycling. all this time I spent trying to show other athletes that my physique is suited to my type of activity and now I can just show them this video :)
Bravo Brad!
And Max.
You guys are both inspiring!
BRAD MAX & Hank great video of course it is all about Body Mass great to see that used to bring the two willing competitors on an even footing!
Brad is such a good sport, great to see him back.
Good fun guys! Very impressed with both. Not your average guys at all. Great competitive spirit!
Yes, I'd love to see Round 2 🙂
Very impressive from both Max and Brad. It's interesting to see how much better Brad was at the isolation exercises and how strong and efficient Max is at compound exercises. Great range of motion from Max on exercises he wouldn't usually do. It's amazing how similar these athletes are in strength when power to weight is factored in. Cool video
Well done, Max and Brad! How about cyclist vs pro dancer? I am a professional dancer in New York and have taken to cycling all around the city for everything, including rehearsals. Dancers don't have any gear telling them about power output and so forth while dancing so it's hard to quantify our athleticism. I'd love to see a local professional (in any style: modern, Sabar, breakdancing, contemporary, house, theatre/jazz, etc) come into your studios, teach a class with a long dance phrase to the always-game GCN presenters and see how they fare in terms of endurance, strength, and flexibility (and optionally, swagger). And then you can put the dancer on a bike to see how they do. Does dancing make you good at climbing? or sprinting? or time-trialing? let's find out! Love the channel - thanks for all the adventures and good fun and info!
The sit-ups were so funny, for a moment I thought Max was going to make it - great effort, congratulations!
juiced to the gills lol
Brad - kudos on that bod. Fantastic.
Thanks Brad
Mega nice and entertaining video👍🏻💪🏻
Thank you for the video!
Might be great to see a cyclist vs a weight lifter?
“Brad, don’t eat Tim”. So silly but performed well by all. Loved it.
I laughed out loud at that comment! What an enjoyable video! 🤣
Chwarae teg Brad, he's a star for giving these tests a go!
Love it 🤩
More of these please.... Average Joe Vs Enthusiast vs Pro Vs Body Builder
Straightening the legs in the leg press made me nervous 😬
loved this, bring them both back, its amazing how the body adapts to its purpose.
Always love to see such content. I lift weights 4 times a week and ride 120km a week. I just take in the best of both the worlds :)
This was such fun!
5:52 a cyclist would have a stronger core especially one that excels in climbing
Great video
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Ummm.... I'm pretty sure that you're not supposed to go all the way on the leg press. I cringed when I saw the pro cyclist straightened his legs on the leg press.
Yes, so dangerous to do that.
I prefer the Hack Squat machine. Definitely works the tendons around the knee joint, too.
The cringe was too much I couldn't watch it 😢
They both did very well. Brad could actually be a pretty good sprinter in cycling. And Max is still pretty powerful for his weight and body size.
Great vidd
Lol awesome vid!!
My youngest wants to be like Brad!!!great video gents
I was a journalist once for a company called whizba haha, but never thought of a gcn host as a journalist. Valid point though just hadn't thought about it.
This was fun to watch, thanks Hank & Co. 😄👍
But in reality isn't "light fast and powerful" as Hank described of Max, sufficient?
As a cyclist it makes no sense to me to add bulky muscle because I'd have to burn calories just to carry the extra weight. 🤷♂
Great vid guys, my wife loved it to…….she’s rewatched it four times already…….
😂
Max is so fresh Brad is so committed but my heart belongs to the Hankerman ❤
The cyclist is wearing lycra… as if we can’t tell him apart from the body builder 😂
well done guys for pitting your different strengths against one another, great test to watch, I reckon max could of leg pressed a lot more
Brad and Max excellent sports !! Gentlemen.
I wish I can look as good as Brad while having the cycling performance of Max, btw... both gents have solid names!
The results were pretty much given beforehand, except the core test, which was interesting. How about offroad-biking, would a muscle man like Max fare better there, with shorter explosive bursts, compared to road racing, which is more of steady power?
I’m not sure what the point of this was but it was funny to watch😂😂🚴🏼💪💨
I am really impressed of their performance. 😮
So strong Max, you did yourself proud x
Yes, I'd like to see round 2 and I'd like to see hank as a third competitor.
Great entertainment 😁👍🏻
Both did amazing. Considering how dense muscle is, I'd have thought Brad was a lot more than 90kg given how huge those muscles look. Like, just from the size of the muscles he looks like he'd be wider than a chubbier 100kg person that isn't that tall.
He's probably on a cutting cycle
He’s quite lean in this video, and not very tall.
It’s why we’ve got track sprinters and GC contenders and all points in between. Almost any body type can be a fabulous athlete in cycling… as long as they are aero enough…
Brad's pullups:
0, 0, 0, 0, 0
There's a chin-up and then there's a pull-up. Relative to Max look at how high Brad gets his chest tho.
Very impressive Max. You surprised me. I can happily volunteer for a weaker cyclist.
Needed to make exercises that were in between slow twitch and fast twitch such as a 300M sprint or 1/5 body weight kettle bell swings for reps. Looks like mainly explosive exercises will always favor the bigger guy who will be far more explosive
Big fan of Hanks t-shirt!
Would like to see who can run the fastest 5k, who can last longer on the stair climber or first to row 2500 meters
Hank = Legend!
I have played a lot of other sports. It is how I spent my youth, as it were. Cyclists are machines, fit for the purpose of biking. They don't look strong in the upper body, but somehow they can hang on and finesse a bike, with narrow bars, going 70 kmh down a hill with no problems. Good video, GCN. Those guys were good sports!
Hank is the best GCN presenter by far
Interesting for me to compare myself against Max, being almost exactly the same height and weight, albeit more than twice his age. I went to a gym once. It was enough.
I am about 90kg , where are all my muscles like Brad??!
I gotta up my pull-up game big time.....
Max is so entertaining to watch😂
Elite biker vs. elite bodybuilder the biker's in better overall physical health by far, every time.
Would be interesting to put them on indoor trainers and do some variety of short sprint sessions to see how the burst of power play out.
Instant like because Max!
Generally had me laughing!
Comment of the video by Max "I can see down his cleavage." 😂😂😂
What about Ramp test? That would be nice challenge 🙂
As a former food delivery boy i knew the plank would be no issue, cyceling is training the core hard.. like i don't train core but when making deliveries was my Main source of i come i tried incline sit ups in the park and got 120 reps in in one go! All from cycling running up stairs and the ocational moving Job like once every second week.
1:46 Hank couldn’t resist a touch of the muscle
I think, the best approach for most of us (not proffesionals) will be, getting best from both worlds (aka hybrid trainig). We need to be both strong AND have endurance, not one OR another.
Peace ✌️ and let's grow in sports
For a featherweight, Max was impressively strong 💪
Seeing Max on the leg press was giving me anxiety. Going to full extension and locking your knees out like that is a great way to get them bending the other way.
He wasn’t locking out completely. As a pro BB, I highly doubt he would make that mistake. He also could probably press another 20-30 kg from the looks of it.
saved my back with cycling. Totally believe the plank
"I can see his cleavage" gave me a good laugh. Well done to both athletes for having a laugh with this.
Please be careful with those legpress, you are loading your joints with a lot more weight then they are used too. You got to be careful with your form, don't make your legs completely straight that is very dangerous
Anyone here doing the olympic lifts to supplement their endurance cycling? Is there any noticeable crossover?
Yes, and strength really helps. No need to go crazy, but incorporating lifts (inc. deadlifts and Olympic) at least fortnightly into an endurance routine does make a difference. Important to start light, perfect the form, then progress with load.
The sit ups were rigged. They should have just let them do as many as they could. The heavy weighted balls gave an unfair advantage to the massive body builder, of course.
🤣🤣There is no day Olie has ever been filmed doing something great. By the way, we love you Olie.
Given that Brad would have trained his core muscles for concentric and eccentric strength mostly for size gains (although does need isometric strength for big heavy compound lifts) and Max would have trained his core for isometric strength for stability on the bike, I'm not surprised Max aced the plank challenge.
Max did really well. The gym gets a little bit harder with each banged up shoulder or collar bone from crashing.
If Hank stated Brad's correct weight (90kg, yeah right) the results are even more impressive.
and now do the upper body tests with olli and si :D
I think if Hank stayed with the 4kg ball, Max would have won. It would have been a long game, but that's what favored Max. Every time the weight went up, the game shifted in Brad's favor. I'm sure Oli must have already mentioned it. 👨🏫
Cycling is interesting, I can squat 180 kg parallel at 70 bw as a powerlifter but my FTP is barely 120w as a newbie cyclist and I cannot climb any slope greater than 15%. Specialisation is key ig.
