Like everyone else who clicked the video... I saw the finished results in the thumbnail before I started to watch the video. Makes for nice sentiment though... even if you did make it up.
I have been convinced. I've always wanted my drawings to have really black parts in it but I've never achieved that with graphite. I'm going to buy charcoal right away! Thank you!
charcoal is the best way i found to achieve black m no matter the graphite grade it can only give different gradients of gray due to the light it catches , i do combine charcoal and graphite in many of my pieces
Thanks guys for watching. If you are my learning tiered patron you should expect the real time of this video up pretty soon on patreon. thanks again to everyone for watching and supporting! Hope this brightened up your day.

No words to say other than stunning or in other way this girl in art is so mesmerizing and as a artist you are majestically inspiring... This art work using black and white makes me to see wonders not because of portrait but the art totally brought life on...
This is a piece that really is more of the one I can say that is really staring at you without permission. Her eyes really stands out. Very eye catching it just pops out to me.
I am not an artist so may be stating the obvious but it seems that you draw as much with the eraser as with the pencil/charcoal. That is just amazing that you can get such realism from pencil and charcoal. Great work.
If you struggle to make good art, understand that its not about talent or even having a good teacher. I finally realized its about being able to making bad art and keep going to that place no matter how frustrating. Allow it to exist. Tolerate it no matter the pain it causes you. But always go to that place.
That is s fantastic method. I have never done it that way; shading in an outline instead of a very light pencil sketch. I've always shaded last as I bring in the details. I can't wait to try it. It makes it easier for me to see the direction I need to go in order to bring it to life. A pre-sketch makes me feel like I need to follow it...Like coloring inside the lines(if that makes sense). Art is beautiful.
So amazing. I can draw a line between 2 points without a ruler, but it ends there. There is such a parallel between this charcoal method and the experiences of life... you think you had a dark experience, and with a little time and perspective the deepness of it can be altered and positioned such that it becomes an attribute...
So you are basically working on shape, form, dark to light. No fine details early on. This is riveting for me. I focused on details early on. I need to re evaluate everything. You're amazing. I must continue watching and learning from your genius.
@@overwatchar570 yes. and? Ah, perhaps you are responding to Colaris. Would be nice if you specified that in your comment. No need for the @ thing, just a name. It helps immensely with communication.
How do you remove dark spot without ruining the whole thing? That’s my biggest problem... once I go too dark I can’t seem to fix the area without making the spot look like smudges of uneven spots.
Lift dark areas by dabbing with a kneaded gum eraser and work in lighter tones on the dark areas with white chalk. Sometimes the white chalk won't work well over a thicker black layer but you can use a spray fixative to spray down the drawing and let it dry and then the white will go over those areas better
Joseph Willard probably right about that, so far I’ve been using strathmore toned gray paper and that other strathmore Griddy square paper. I never used newsprint tho. I’ll give it a try. So far I still leave uneven spots when I use the kneaded eraser, I’ll try different paper
I prefer a more expressive, rough charcoal texture over the end result here. It's amazing how close the drawing is to a photograph; the only problem I have with hyperrealism is that the hand of the artist disappears as he is simply copying reality, not interpreting it.
Maybe the interpretation of reality is a very real one. I completely understand the point you make, I look at charcoal portraits as much about negating interpretation of reality as I do interpreting reality, whatever that is.
Hyperrealism is when you struggle to tell the difference between the drawing and a photo of the subject that has been drawn, you will never see a hyperrealist start a drawing like this one. This is not hyperrealism, it's just an artist who completely understands the fundamentals of portraiture, therefore allowing him/her to be as abstract or exacting as they wish.
out of all the mediums in drawing portraits. charcoal is the most fun to watch unfolding. others like colour pencil starts unfolding at some areas slowly but in charcoal it unfolds as a whole.
Nyigam Bole I’ve recently been practicing with charcoal, before I mostly used graphite. After watching many videos, the tips that helped me most was using softer charcoal and loading the blending stump to draw and when I needed to erase gently erase to preserve the integrity of the paper I use. Use light pressure and the charcoal can be removed easier. It worked for me. I hope it works for you too and I hope you don’t mind a somewhat inexperienced artist jumping in on your question. I just noticed no one had responded to your question. Best regards.
I absolutely love charcoal, but it's very hard to handle. It should be every pencil artist's go-to tool. The pictures just come alive with a different look in it altogether, one that no other tool compares to. I'm slowly getting back to this groove, but damn, charcoal, after five years of not touching sketching at all, is so fucking tough to control! Still, what a beautiful sketch. I hope to reach here soon, as well. Fantastic job! Subscribed!
i have some on that here and workshops and more real times videos i do on patreon. Been trying to get enough support so everything is practically free for everyone tho. maybe one day.
How can someone be this good handling charcoal?! Charcoal drawing is like reversed engineering or something the way I see it. You couldn't know how it will look until the very end. I can only do line art and it never cease to amaze me seing people so good at shading.

What I’ve learned: charcoal doesn’t look great until near to the very end 🙌
Nothing looks great in painting sketching until the very end. :)

Wow. Never seen a piece of work produced where someone is removing the medium rather than adding it! :)
Colaris someone said that you shound not erase while drawing. But to me the eraser is just a pen on a negative setting. That is why I use two sizes

Eraser or white chalk? I don't know just a guess
might be the type of paper ur using isnt the best for manipulating charcoal. newsprint is one of the best
