Hi, there is a low chance you will see this but that’s incredible. Your art is fantastic and you inspire me! To all the people hating on this, I doubt they could do any better! This drawing is really realistic and I love it!
Critics are brutal, I think you did great, learned a lot of techniques.
Thanks, Jeff!
Me too
It's easy to be a critic while sitting on your ass watching UA-cam! This artist is actually CREATING!! 🥰
I'd love to see everyone who wrote something negative post _their_ attempts at a charcoal portrait! I'd be willing to bet most will be really poorly executed-if at all. 😏🤷🏻♀️
Lol ❤️ I agree with you, I think this artist did fantastic work, and I really wish these jerks would shut up about their negativities and go create something half as good as this!! Cause it's amazing 🥰
You make me feel like I could just pick up a pencil and make something amazing
I get that a lot of people want to be nice and whatnot but this did not look like the model nor did it have basic anatomy points. I would try to be a bit nicer but it doesn't seem like the artist is accepting of criticism (judging from her replies).
-the hair was a whole mess and instead of having that "unfinished look" that she was aiming for it just had a messy look
-the ears are usually in line with the nose and eyes
- the proportions of the face are off which makes it look like a whole nother person.
And guys don't reply with "you can't do any better" because you don't need to be a chef to say that the food is bad.
sincerely,
A traditional art student
Bleached White, who ever said you were a art critic? Your just a student. She was trying at it looks amazing. And I rlly doubt that you can make it look super perfect like the original picture or model. So back off and stfu nobody needs you to be a fake little art critic.
I agree with you. There are a lot of things she needs to work on to improve, especially the basics. She'll get there someday if she's open to accepting flaws in her work and not try to make excuses for it.
@@madisonhutnik6235 Literally anyone can be a critic, regardless of status. It's not that hard. He's not wrong.
Hmmm, she only make the nose and eyes bigger. The girl looks like a cartoon with those eyes, but the drawing looks good even if dosn t look like the girl in the photo 100%. I like it!
I'll leave the rest and just focus on one point: "the proportions of the face are off which makes it look like a whole nother person"
There are two problems with that statement. Most importantly is that the first thing I noticed while watching this video is that she is not drawing entirely in the realistic style. The face looks different because it is stylized, and there is a large difference between style and inaccuracy. The second problem isn't too big of a deal, but your grammer is even worse than mine. Careful not to fail art school. For a certainty your teachers will be much harsher towards you than I am, if they do their jobs that is.
Not sure why anyone would give boos to this, you’re doing it, it’s your method and at the end of the day more people are thankful for what you put out there than the non important ones who dislike it - keep going forward strong
it was very nice to watch, and I also draw and it is soooooo difficult to get all the shadings... Very nice!
BUY A TORTILLON I HELPS YOU BLENDING AND EDGES ON THE FEATURES OF THE HUMAN FACE
Its much harder to get the proportions tho
I think it's beautiful work. Some people seem to want photographic realism, but I agree with one comment. Then why bother with art. Just snap a picture for an exact rendering of the original. You can save time that way. And yes, it still looks like the girl in the photo. Charcoal does seem like an awfully messy medium, however. I do think some verbal commentary would have helped at different stages of the process to give a general idea what the purpose of that stage was and also what was involved in achieving it.
Why bother with art anymore if AI can do everything for us? Art is filled with passion and emotions. If you put that into art then it is art.
People spend hours on works that isn't even photorealistic. Snapping a picture of something isn't going to give that artist the same satisfaction as it does if it was done completely by them.
@@LIIantonioIIL yes I agree with that but I just think that it kinda takes away the beauty of drawing by making it a "photo". I don't wanna hate on em or anything I do appreciate the time they put in it I just wanted to say my opinion about it here :)
@@Ondra_rx7 Why does making something photorealistic take away from the drawing? Even if it looks like a photo it's still a drawing. It's the emotions and hard work put into a piece that makes it art. Art is beauty and it can look like anything.
@@Ondra_rx7 But as you stated with me, I respect your opinion.
@@LIIantonioIIL ye ur right
I think you should work more on the hair
----------------------
Edit : I didn't mean to offend the artist or anybody, sorry if it came out that way! I just thought it would look better that way. As an amateur artist i love to hear various opinions from all kinds of people. However, everyone has a different style and a different way of expression. The painting looks amazing nonetheless!
Thank you for stopping by! My style is to leave things a bit unfinished, but appreciate your feedback! xo
I’m an artist too and hair is my weakness
IKR
@@KaraBullockArt I love how people call weaknesses "their style". Just goddamn work on it and be proud of your mistakes, own them. Jeez
I think style in your dictionary is you think it is 100% perfect and can’t take tips from others.
Beautiful portrait . I learned some different techniques watching you ...Thank zyou
not even 2 minutes into the video but... for somebody that just began with drawing and doesn't know anyone in real-life that draws this video is an eye-opener!
Thanks Kara, appreciate your work!
regarding the comments stating "it's not 100% accurate" I must say:
Nowhere it does state she was trying to draw an exact copy of the model and tbh I don't find copying something 100% accurate to be very appealing.. freedom of expression, that's what it's all about for me.
But then... I just started out, so what do I know, mhm? ;-)
This method is the one i use in my sketching. well done, thank you for taking the time to post this video. That young lady looks like she is very tired. Then again all teenagers are tired and they sleep a lot.
Thanks for doing this video, I like it so much because it made me realize how many mistakes I was doing while drawing, I was speechless. I learned a lot with this video and the drawing it’s amazing.
You guys i do agree wth some of the points i mean its not perfect but she is still growing i mean you never stop growing as an artist. So i think its pretty good keep the good work up
I am using this tutorial to teach my college students how to draw in charcoal during the pandemic closure. I have been a professional artist and educator for 40yrs. Having quality presentations and demos of varies techniques have been crucial to finishing our semester. Yes, it is easier for instructive purposes to have someone talk you through material and thought processes. Yet, use your observations and figure out that she seems to start with soft charcoal (vine) proceeds with charcoal pencils (hard) and when she swaps out the use of a click eraser (plastic eraser that looks like a pen) or a kneaded eraser (soft & pliable).
Ms. Bullock has done a wonderful presentation of her charcoal technique and I am grateful that these videos are available for FREE.
Mary Lynn, we have other free videos that will be loaded soon, and also free classes on my website! Do check them out! Cheers!! xo
that girl is GORGEOUS!!!!!!
Lovely and very soothing to watch your process. ❤❤ from Alaska
That was incredible to watch! She is absolutely gorgeous. Thanks foe letting us watch you work.
Thank you so much, Linda! I hope to make more!!
wow.. this is amazing!!! congratulations
Wow thats insane.. I feel ur atyle and i did it before... It really works and very comportable To skecth roughly and slowly building thw form... Wow u impress dude... Such rare artist like us... Ur super duper great artist....
thanks for this video. I didn't realize how many layers of shading is necessary to achieve a great half tone. Love this a lot and gives me ideas for techniques in my next drawing.
Idk about other people, but I'm learning techniques. This is really helpful, and as for proportions, they're adjustable 🤷🏽♂️ I'm only here for guides on charcoal 😊
This was amazing. I’ve been watching a lot of videos, (starting art in your 50’s is a bit of a challenge), so many use the grid method or light box. Yours is one of the few I’ve watched that showed the actual sketching out and quite accurately in my opinion. Really awesome to watch!
Why do some people have no appreciation? They should appreciate the beauty of the drawing. People this days.
It's called constructive criticism, thw artist should be honoured
@@lunnyarts7799 yeah your right
This is very good! I'm sorry you're getting alot of criticism, but dont let that stop you from doing art! I think it looks amazing and not everything needs to be " photo realistic" to be good realism art. And art takes time and practice and I think you're doing wonderfully, I also live the techniques you used in this, please keep doing art! ❤❤🍎❤❤❤❤
That was amazing to watch!!
Thank you, Patty!!
Stunning, I LOVED everything about this !
this was a beautiful piece, but there are some things that have room for improvement. erasing for lighter values rather than using white charcoal (until the white-est highlight), and hiding all contour lines with shading to form those hard edges. I'm excited to see what you'll produce in the future :)
Mikaela Ritter true
How didn't I know there was white charcoal 😳
Johanna Schwank it’s not technically charcoal, just chalk. 😂😭
Wow amazing you are very good at what you do i draw alot but have never used charcoal i am thinking about trying it tho now!
You should definitely use it!
just wow
I think you need to spend a bit more time establishing the basic shapes before going into the block in stage. You rushed the proportions early on which I think limited you in how you developed the rest of the face afterwards. Also, really try to see the different values in the hair and look at them as shapes. You missed some key areas which would have helped to make it feel more like hair.
This is very true. I do not like the music sound like she is a master. No, she is not. A lot of room to improve. Especially the hair (That"s a huge piece of cloud hang over there) and connection area of hair and face.
yang christina she can use whatever music she wants, what's wrong with you!

Great demo Kara!
Great job Kara, and you have so much talent. I'm not an artist but recently bought a chalk coal pencil kit and I'm trying to take some UA-cam lessons (pointers) on how to do portrait drawings. You're is my first lesson...you sure do great, thanks!
I really enjoyed watching you create all of this with charcoal! It's really easy to make out what some of the main things or pinpoints are, and I do like the differences between your inspiration photo and the piece of work itself, it shows off your skills to use reference a lot!
Despite some others saying stuff about how they don't look alike, I really enjoyed watching you create! Drawing is a great way to relax and de-stress, I love it! It has a nice sense of contrast despite using the shades of white to grey alone.
Thank you so much!!
Beautiful work! Thank you so much for sharing your talent. You have inspired me to pick up the charcoal again!
Yay!
U dont how much do i het relax watching ur videos🤩🤩🤩
U dont now*
Just a small warning 📍This person clearly doesn't take criticism well so if you know something about portraits and notice some things about this art aren't right, you don't need to point it out in the comments, they won't give a shit about art stuff:) Goodbye~
I agree she can't accept constructive criticism and because of that her art remains just plainly unappealing to the consumers or to anyone that knows anything about art. She has a lot to learn and just needs to accept that.
😲 wow you are amazing
very useful video :) I'm trying charcoal for the first times and I was a bit unsure of how to work with it. Loved to see how you do it!
Great work of art! Love watching the process from start to finish. Makes me want to pick up my charcoal pencil and star sketching away.
Yay!!
I love this! It’s amazing to me that you can make art so beautiful with charcoal. Personally, I can’t use charcoal to save my life, but I loved watching you!
Very helpful tutorial. Thank you for sharing your talent
Thanks vallgrl2!
Simple use grid method because you don’t seem to be getting proportions right freehand ....eyes are too big ....nose is bigger ...there are a lot of many other things which have gone wrong ....I hope you take this positively and learn from your mistakes
this is more like a speedpaint, rather than a tutorial
Yes it is more likelly a watch me Draw tutorial my friend

And I don’t mind this is really good drawing thanks!
Amazing!!! I don't have erasers for fine details, but I am practicing with graphite and charcoal... it's so beautiful and challenging at the same time. I hope one day I can be like you 😍😍
Very satisfying to watch. Thanks do much this was a lovely video. It inspires me to become better with charcoal
Appreciate your comments! Thank you! xo
First I thought this was rubbish but after some time , boom ! An masterpiece 😀
I’m grateful for these Drawing in Charcoal videos, I’ve gain a lot of valuable information, thank you very much.
All these comments make me nervous and hesitant to post my drawings for anyone to see. I understand constructive criticism when it is asked for, or when you’re trying to go for a certain style. But the comments in here are making it seem like you have to be extremely perfect, no mistakes, and if you make a few mistakes your art “sucks” or looks “horrible”. I’ve been drawing for years on and off. I’m just now getting into charcoal, mostly charcoal pencil, and putting in more work with shading and detailing, so in that sense I’m fairly new. To me, this drawing was really good, maybe not perfect but it was good. Just because you’re a “professional artist”, doesn’t mean that everyone who draws needs to have their artwork look like yours. Not everyone can draw perfect, a lot of people do it for enjoyment, because they like it. It’s not like this girl is making an art piece that she’s selling, she’s doing it for fun, to show people her work and how she does it. I don’t know, I just didn’t know people who were into art were so damn brutal instead giving actual respectful constructive criticism, which is different from harsh, rude, and disrespectful like “this isn’t good at all, you did all of this wrong. Why did you do that? It doesn’t look right. You need to do this and that or you’re not good enough. It looks like a child made a failed attempt at trying to copy someone’s work”. Which I really doubt many children can even do it this well. Just my opinion. I feel like constructive criticism would go something like: “You did good, but I would like to point some things out to maybe improve. You can add this, or do this and it would have this effect, or maybe don’t do this and do it this way” etc. I just feel as if going about it in a more respectful approach would be better instead of totally tearing someone down because they didn’t do it completely perfect. Art is a learning process and takes a lot of time, but not everyone is doing it to be perfect, some are doing it because it’s something they enjoy. The people who are being so rude about it makes it seem like they think they’re better than everyone and that just because they’re not as good as them that they’re no good at all. It makes them seem narcissistic. I understand if you’re paying for an art class and your art teacher is hard on you, that’s different because you’re paying for a professional to teach you how to be better in a specific style.

wow!!!, excellent video. I've been really struggling drawing realistic portraits. I need help. I'm just waking up it's 7:20 here in Charlotte, NC. Good morning!! What an wonderful drawing. I think I'll attempt some more drawings for a couple of hours, with some charcoal. Love your technique by the way.
Amazing work, well done 👍
it was not just creative but entertaining as well, i could not move, i waited till i saw all the steps to the end, continue doing that .
Thank you so much Joy!
You did an amazing job at getting those highlights and shadows ver beautiful. Good work!❤️

Does anybody know the girl from the portait? Or the photographer? An amazing photo! Of course I am in love with the art work as well, it's very relaxing to watch
mike toni umm ahem he was just saying that it was an amazing photo. You are sick for thinking that!
@mike toni What part of it's an amazing photo makes someone sick?
@mike toni sounds like you're projecting your own feelings on others... Hmmm
@natweaves
mike toni what is wrong with you idiot
Couldn't be more realistic 😍🤯
Man, I don't what the crits are thinking.
Portraits are always interpretations of a physical appearance...at least the most compelling ones are anyways.
I think that there are a lot of people out there caught up in the hyper-realistic art crap. If that's the type of art you want to create, then save yourself some time and buy a camera!
Excellent value range. Keep up the good work!
We All know what an awesome Portrait Looks like. This one Just didn’t do it. Look at
John Singer Sargent’s Work it’s Not “Hyper”.
In my BFA I was taught to Help an Artist by Critically Critique there works Regardless if it’s Impressionism or Realism. If your not Being Blunt nor Giving Good Advice your only Hurting the Artist. We can talk all day about the Soul the Feel in the Heart Of ones Passion Behind a Peace But! However, at the End of the Day it’s just not that Well Executed and needs improvement.🤷♂️💯
Or Just Call Your self Diego Rivera and Call it a Day haha. Theres Absolutely Nothing wrong with that.
@@josejuanrivera1903 Overall, I think that the young artist deserves praise, credit and encouragement. I have no doubt that this artist will improve over time. Some of the nit picky criticisms are skewed by the critics' own compulsions in their work (hair) and maybe the desire for the work to appear more rendered. I don't think that the artist intended a rendered portrait.
I would assume that if an artist is doing Sargent-caliber work, they probably wouldn't be posting it on UA-cam and seeking feedback. Anyway if people in the 21st century want to pursue and achieve a realistic, academic aesthetic, then go ahead. A million other artists are doing that and they all look pretty much the same.

It’s obvious that the Artist did not make a rendered portrait. How is John singer Sargent
The same as David Kassan, Scott Waddell, Rembrandt, Velasquez, Joseph todorovitch, and Ceaser Santos?? I love that I can watch you make marks and edit. I get to see how that is done instead of it being done off camera. I learned so much! Thank you!! Beautiful portrait!
Excellent job! I enjoyed it very much. Thanks for the share
I learned something quite important today, no matter how good you capture the proportions, unless you shade your portrait it won’t look like the person too much
That is an interesting comment!! What are your thoughts about taking your own perspective from a photograph? If I wanted her to look just like the photo, then I just need the photo....I like to make my own piece from a reference photo.
Kara Bullock As I kept progressing I realised that making a photo realistic piece kind of looses the whole point of drawing. Whenever me and my class judge our paintings from far away, they all look like the person drawn yet you can see unique art style in every piece. That’s what’s truly fascinating about drawing. Drawing what you see the way you see it rather than how it looks
@@43En Such a great realization! Yes! We all see things quite differently don't we? That is the beauty of art, that no one can create like you, or like me. We are each unique to ourselves. Thanks for your response and for watching!
WE have different techniques..but i'll give this a shot..thanks for this tutorial
Hello love this
So good I love it, now I have a excuse to practice with charcoal
Yes!!
So sad to see such hateful people in comments. As an artist I try to draw as close as the reference. Proportions don't matter because if the nose is sideways than you draw it sideways and if the ear is lower than the head you put it lower than the head. It all about making it as real as the picture. When I draw I add everything I see so when I look at the end result I know it is the same. Now sometimes nose or lips can be hard so you change it a bit to look close to the original. I don't believe in art class nor do I believe in art college. I have a style that I use and I'm going to stick with it because it is what I love to do. I think this woman did a phenomenal job on this and i think this look like her plus I love her style. Picasso and Michelangelo have their own style which made them know for their beautiful or weird artwork. Art is supposed to be expressed in a way people feel inspired. Also us as artist have the right to have any style we want and have the right to show it! So if the nose is off or it doesn't fully look like the person who cares because it's your art and you own it! I hope I get this good drawing with charcoal. 🙏💕PS ART IS DIVERSE!!!!
