She also suffered from claustrophobia in real life and all scenes done in an actual straight jacket were at the end of the day as she noted it was emotionally draining. This fear started when her brother Hal locked her in a cupboard for several hours as a child. Crawford also asked for the then-vice president of Pepsi to play the “doctor.” Pepsi placements can be seen in the film as well. Strait Jacket also stars Diane Baker. Baker said the Pepsi vice president couldn’t act, but “…in the end he was made happy!” Baker and Crawford worked previously together in The Best if Everything (1959) and later in Della/Royal Bay (1964). “There was no question [Joan Crawford] was a star. I did feel Joan was kind to me, I did feel she was supportive of me, and wanted me to do well. The next thing I know I’m getting a call they’re sending you the script but you have to say yes you have to start tomorrow. I was brought in really fast, it was like someone wanted me there yesterday. We all knew who she was and it was kind of exciting around the whole set.” - Diane Baker (2002)
I think she didn't like making this film and being in the strait jacket if my memory of researching her serves me correctly. They only had a narrow set of roles they offered to her after Baby Jane such as thriller characters or grandma. She preferred to be casted as a Hollywood beauty and not in such intense scenes.
