Overall, as long as you try your best and just be your authentic self, once you have passed the application stages and are in an interview. The employer already wants you, it's just your chance to seal the deal!

Thanks for the vid and advice bro its refreshing to hear someone from the uk instead of somebody from america talking about tech jobs😂 i wanted some advice, basically im almost finishing my software engineering bootcamp which accredits me with an NQF level 5 certificate which i think translates to higher education for IT (level 4 or level 5) (HNC) or (HND) something like that but im so confused about the job roles intern, graduate, apprentice, junior omg🤯 my question is, after my bootcamp if i pass (god willing) should i apply for software engineer apprenticeships? Even tho they say you gain a level 4 which i think i already have from my bootcamp so would that be a waste? Or should i just go straight and apply for intern or graduate/junior job roles? I have no real world experience btw, would love your advice thanks bro💪🏻💪🏻
Hi bro, first of all good luck!
From my research (google lol) NQF level 5 == 2nd year on bachelors degree type of level. I've heard of people doing bootcamps and getting software dev/eng. jobs, but I personally didn't think I could do it, but that doesn't mean you cant! In my opinion good news is an employer may take you seriously if you apply for a Junior role, but not so good news, you'll obviously have to show you're capable even without the education in interviews/assessments etc. I haven't done an official programming interview, leet code, all the other mainstream stuff etc. but hopefully your bootcamp gives you that knowledge to impress wherever you apply!
Job Role Ranking (least to most qualified/difficult downwards):
1. NORMAL APRPENTICE: require > GCSES, acquire > Level 2 yearsish usually.
2. INTERN: require > currently completing/completed degree or completed BCAMP, acquire > XP, time > 1wk-6mnths? usually
3. DEGREE APPRENTICE (What I am): required > A-Levels or your programme might be enough, acquire > Bachelors Degree & XP, time > 4 years then potential offer to Junior
4. GRADUATE: required > bachelors/masters degree and rarely XP (1-3 years), acquire > XP & Potential Junior Role, time > 2 years
5. JUNIOR: required > bachelors/masters degree and normally XP (1-3 years), acquire > XP & Potential Senior/Further Career Progression, time > however long you want... lol
What should you apply for?
If I was you, I'd apply to Internships, DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS, and Junior Roles. Firstly, just send applications and after a few responses you'll find out which one in most realistic. As you have no experience, you may be most successful with degree apprenticeship and intern, but again, who knows.
Normal apprentice in my opinion is not worth your time, but if you can't convince employer at all to take you without it. Then it just is what it is unfortunately, you'll have to take that then apply to degree apprenticeship.
With your lack of experience, I'd say finish your bootcamp and try some basic projects (build a webapp or something maybe, that's what I'm doing now). Then also more than just coding, just familiarise yourself with: agile, scrum, and/or at a high level some modern technology AI/IOT/CLOUD COMPUTING/Blockchain something like that, and that will make you at least seem interesting to employers.

Would using aspects off your personal statement be good to include in your cover letter?
If you mean personal statement for university then it depends. If it’s something that is relevant to the job or you feel it’s key to making your point of why you deserve the job add it. If it’s the typical “I have had a passion for this since I was a child” then not really😅

when do you think i'ts too late to apply for apprenticeships?
I’ve seen that applications are during the period Jan-March every year, with interviews shortly after for most companies… so probably wanna get a move on if you haven’t got anything ready yet😊
If you mean age wise, I’m not sure. I’ve done this after already getting my first degree, so I guess they also take mature students. Although I don’t know if there’s a cap on how many mature students would get employed🤔
I don’t have a STEM background but I want to apply for Software Engineering apprenticeships, how can I have a strong interview/CV
Good question. I had STEM background but I had 0 knowledge of computer systems or programming, apart from some very basic research. I could print hello world and that was about it.
I'd say get across that you've got the right skills by showing: you are analytical, have inquisitive thinking, open minded to learning FAST, and genuinely interested in software engineering. Research things you actually care about in software engineering (apart from salary lol). I briefly read company annual statements for companies I attended interviews for, did some basic research on IoT, Blockchain technology (distributed ledger tech), metaverse, and I asked my current manager (and others at other companies) about these things, and how the company is going to utilise blockchain technology in supply chain (I saw an article they were doing so). If you've not got a stem background, it tells me you're changing careers... so maybe dive into more about why you've decided to change careers, that proves you are mindful as well, sometimes soft skills is what can get you the job, because there is a lack in stem ahah... my opinon.
It might seem like overkill, but if you actually care, I'd say do it. If the employer is good, they'll respect you for doing that research, and if you get rejected then it won't hurt finding out more about what you're interested in.

I was asking at what rate or how frequently should one apply to positions. There was a typo.
@@olamstevy No problem! I’d say apply to as many as you want. Just find which one you like and apply, but just keep in mind which one you want most. Let’s say you apply to 20 and you get offered interviews for all, you may not be able to attend all. At that point you’ll get to pick which one you want👍🏾

I got no degree in anything, i'm 28 and looking to start my journey as a software engineer, i'm currently teaching myself but apprenticeship seems to be the best way since you can gain experience, will I still be eligible for these types of apprenticeships?
I’d say yes! I started at 24 after finishing my first degree and another person on the programme is 27, so I’m guessing age doesn’t really matter like on my first degree, which was a normal degree at university only and we had multiple students of age 30+.
@@Illack How come you decided to get a second degree / degree apprenticeship if you already have a first degree from university and would you recommend not going to uni and just getting a degree apprenticeship are the costs worth it?
I chose to do a second degree because I wasn’t interested in the Chemical Engineering industry and jobs. I found software engineering interesting but had no knowledge of programming or basic computing hardware/software/functions.
I’d say for software engineering and the like, degree apprenticeships might be much better because you’re going to have 4 years experience in your industry. It’s a full job though, so it’s so much more stress than just uni in my opinion. Degree Apprenticeship is paid for by your company and they pay you a salary on top, so there’s NO COSTS. Uni will cost you in student loan, but people make out it’s massively worse than it actually is. Lenders don’t care about student loans tbh, so the debt won’t stop you from getting mortgages etc. and it’s minimal payments, plus 0% interest, so it’s not that deep😅

I’ll try to answer as many as I can👍🏾 work life balance depends on how much you commit. Uni assignments required me quite some work but I only knew hello world and arithmetic operations in python before I joined, plus knew nothing about computer systems, networks, C++, didn’t do statistical maths. Which were all modules😂 but luckily my work gave me Friday to study (but for your contracted hours 9-5, and colleagues understood I was apprentice, and I had ability to tell them no. Just know your limit in terms of outputs, plan well, and work efficiently, you should have enough time to do assignments and have a party every week if that’s what you’re into😂
Interview process (may vary for company):
Took 2.5 hours. We met our competing colleagues in a coffee room for 30mins, we had a chat etc, got introduction by HR on some company info. Then you have a personality assessment/chat with 1 hiring manager in the department which wants you, then you have to present work to a different hiring manager. I didn’t even do a presentation related to software engineering for my current job, so don’t worry about that if you don’t have direct experience👍🏾
