To be fair, MS Flight Simulator always had the goal to stay as true to the real world scenery as computer technology allowed it, so the towers would have been removed anyway. Granted though, the circumstances brought a greater urgency than like, if some landmark somewhere had been bestroyed by an earthquake or something.
By the way, VATSIM cannot ban you from playing flight simulator, they can only ban you from their online network. Today you are still bannable from VATSIM if you attempt to simulate hijacking.
This also happened with Lilo and Stitch In 2001 when they were still making the movie Showed one of the scenes of them in a plane crashing through a city but after 9/11 the final cut in 2002 was changed from a plane to a space ship and city to mountains Edit:just figured out you already mentioned it in the video
Ace Combat 04 also had a minor change to the Invincible Fleet mission. "Prior to the release of AC04, a pair of towers were present in the vicinity of the Tanager, which would become covered by the battleship's smoke after being sunk. The September 11 attacks forced Project Aces to remove both towers from the final product immediately before the release of the game, as the development team thought the imagery was too similar to the burning World Trade Center towers." -Ace Combat wiki
Fun fact: Sami Rami’s Spider-Man 1 had a teaser trailer where Spider-Man webs up a Helicopter full of bank robbers between the Twin Towers. This was removed for obvious reasons but you can still find it here in 2024. Someone found the teaser and reposted it on UA-cam.
My brother flew into the WTC on Fight Simulator 2000 a few days after 9/11. One of those weird memories I still have when I was 10. “Matthew! Look I’m going to crash into the World Trade Center”
The plane in Twisted Metal Black is one of the reasons that game is my favorite in the franchise. Not only did it unlock Yellow Jacket, but it opened a whole new area with power ups. Shooting the plane is an important piece of strategy for that game, and so is bombing the Eiffel Tower in Twisted Metal 2. Such polish. Reminds me of Megaman X, where you would beat one stage first in order to unlock secrets in another. That's exactly what was missing in Twisted Metal 2012.
I always find it kind of upsetting when people don't want to put references to the Trade Center in things because of associations with 9/11. I was born and raised around Manhattan and have very fond memories of going and hanging out in the plaza and in the mall underground there when I was a kid, and it always feels like those are trying to be erased too :( (Sorta related: Rockstar actually did a stellar job of making Liberty City into a mini digital New York - especially in IV where it even included local NJ environs, etc. that people wouldn't even usually bother to put. I actually was admittedly kind of surprised they allowed you to drive straight into JFK [can't remember it's fake name] and onto the tarmac and runaways, lol.)
I absolutely agree with this. I feel like while it’s important to remember the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and 9/11, it’s also important to remember what the complex itself looked like, as well as how it operated for the 28 years it was open to the public.
Another game that was changed surprisingly recently was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. If you watch the gameplay reveal, the segment is from the Battle of New York and is in the final game. In the demo, as your character surfaces from under water, you can see the new 1 WTC, or “The Freedom Tower” in the background. However, in the final game, 1 WTC is replaced by a slightly redesigned 3 WTC, another building in the new World Trade Center complex. This change can also be seen in a quick shot in the game’s launch trailer. Supposedly, a key reason that this detail was changed was the developers did not want to offend anyone pr reopen old wounds by seeing the new tower under attack.
@@Mabdog3597 the French get easily offended over anything that has to do with the destruction of the Eiffel tower, regardless if it's real or fiction, or even the stereotype that they're known for surrendering in WW2, and just about every war after that (where they fought in of course). Kinda like how the Germans still censor swastikas, and anything resembling Hitler, in the German versions of WW2 shooters
@@Emogamer-tp8vo It is actually not illegal to show the swastika in Germany if you have a reason for it, art being one of them. The censoring in video games was done by the developers not the German state. For the same reason those versions of the game with symbols were never illegal in Germany. It all comes down to a misunderstanding of the German law and not wanting to be the first to have swastikas in their game in Germany. That changed however a couple of years ago, when one German developer submitted their game with swastikas to the USK and unsurprisingly passed the rating. I believe Bethesda were the first after that releasing their international versions of Wolfenstein in Germany. Kinda crazy how much money companies like Bethesda blew on releasing separate German versions of their game, they just needed some balls and submit their games to the USK.
The editing of these video games following the September 11th, 2001 attacks is somewhat understandable as the unedited games would be causing bouts of P.T.S.D in the survivors and open old wounds in the families of the deceased.

The GTA box cover makes sense now. I always wondered why it looked one way when I would read about it and look it up but when it finally came out, totally different. The main character was not a terrorist, he was a thug trying to come up and doing jobs he was paid for.

I do find it a bit noteworthy that Sonic Adventure 2 did not appear to be affected by this whatsoever, as far as I can tell, including the 2002 re-release, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. It's a game with sequences of terrorism like blowing up an island, blowing up a chunk of The Moon, and the threat of blowing up an expy of The United States (as Sonic's Earth is full of locations loosely-based on real-world locations instead of the real locations themselves, with the one exception of Japan still existing). Terrorism, bombs, a WMD, it's all there, along with various incidental things, like being able to shoot police cars and traffic cop mopeds.
I was expecting to hear about how Deus Ex removed the twin tours from the games skyline due to memory restraints, explaining in story that the towers fell in a attack that occured in the year 2000. the strange thing is that Deus Ex released years before 9/11.
Fun fact about THPS3: In the Airport level, Neversoft originally included a goal which would involve terrorists. After 9/11 they replaced the terrorists with pickpockets, But the pickpocket model file is still called terrorist_a.
For me,it’s so weird how everyone moved on so fast. If I was alive at that time and witnessed it,I could never move on and think about it everyday. My parents never told me about 9/11,the internet did. When I heard about it at first,it didn’t click to me that people died. I didn’t know what death meant at the time. But now, seeing the towers fall and all the recordings,I broke down. I still can’t understand why can’t we just live together in peace. I might sound naive about the world. Genuinely its a question that will never be answered. And the music in this video doesn’t help the feelings. For me,the 90s ended that day. Before that day,America hadn’t transitioned into the 2000s yet. I can’t understand why no one I know talks to me fully about this. If I do ask, they just say “Yep it was real, surprised you know about it because of your age”. No one my age knows about 9/11. It’s like the world started when they were born, anything that happened before they were born doesn’t concern them. I had a full breakdown seeing it fall. Such a beautiful landmark, gone in seconds. At first,I couldn’t think about Muslims the same, until I realized it’s not their fault. It was terrorists. I hate how I have so much knowledge for my age, because I overthink at night. Honestly,9/11 is the only event to make me burst into tears. When I get older,I want to visit where the WTC and put my respects and lay a flower to the poor souls who had to deal with it. It even saddens me even more because my mother visited America a lot when she was younger and to know I had a slight chance of not being born scares me. I have a general fear of heights and planes, well probably even does. If I could go back and somehow warn everyone,I can die in peace. But they’d probably jail me. And the one thing that broke me was a 2 year old child on one of the planes that just wanted to see Mickey Mouse. Never forget.
I remember a game called pilot wings for nintendo 64 had the twin towers in it. Me and my brother used to crash into them all the time pretending to be "bad guys" destroying NYC. This was in 96/97
anyone else ever notice that kids who were born past 9/11 and didn't grow up in the "post 9/11 era" the rest of the world did are WAY different than the rest of us. What that change is I can't place, but i feel it's related to the absence of that factor.

no its not. censoring the towers when there wasn't even a plane or any explosions near it is a little extreme.
The change of GTA 3's cover art turned out to be a good thing. Its style is iconic for the series now
To be fair, MS Flight Simulator always had the goal to stay as true to the real world scenery as computer technology allowed it, so the towers would have been removed anyway.

I'm pleasantly surprised. These are all facts. Really good job! I'll have to watch some more of this channel.
This also happened with Lilo and Stitch In 2001 when they were still making the movie Showed one of the scenes of them in a plane crashing through a city but after 9/11 the final cut in 2002 was changed from a plane to a space ship and city to mountains
Edit:just figured out you already mentioned it in the video

@@poyo5787 if that’s the case you probably work at Disney since it was replaced with the ship version
Ace Combat 04 also had a minor change to the Invincible Fleet mission.
"Prior to the release of AC04, a pair of towers were present in the vicinity of the Tanager, which would become covered by the battleship's smoke after being sunk. The September 11 attacks forced Project Aces to remove both towers from the final product immediately before the release of the game, as the development team thought the imagery was too similar to the burning World Trade Center towers."
-Ace Combat wiki
Mobius 1 Also, Acepedia states that Ace Combat 2 had WTC like towers in Anchorhead that were removed in Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy.

It's crazy to think how a game that's already out can get effected by a event that happens in the future.

I always find it kind of upsetting when people don't want to put references to the Trade Center in things because of associations with 9/11. I was born and raised around Manhattan and have very fond memories of going and hanging out in the plaza and in the mall underground there when I was a kid, and it always feels like those are trying to be erased too :(
(Sorta related: Rockstar actually did a stellar job of making Liberty City into a mini digital New York - especially in IV where it even included local NJ environs, etc. that people wouldn't even usually bother to put.
I’m surprised they kept the Eiffel Tower scene lol
@@SocksFCGameArchives why's that?!
Foreshadowing a future update to the NYC skyline? Or just a weird change
The editing of these video games following the September 11th, 2001 attacks is somewhat understandable as the unedited games would be causing bouts of P.T.S.D in the survivors and open old wounds in the families of the deceased.

(9/11 aside, I like the change they made. Made it feel less dangerous since innocent people couldn't get hurt. Also, mountains tent to be a bit more random than man-made buildings.)
Probably because it centers around cartoonish, anthropomorphic animals. I wonder if that has anything to do with the lack of controversy.
Yeah, it's weird how that game never got affected at all from 9/11. Like, they even mention terrorism in the hero's preview.
Sonic isn’t that important bro
I was expecting to hear about how Deus Ex removed the twin tours from the games skyline due to memory restraints, explaining in story that the towers fell in a attack that occured in the year 2000. the strange thing is that Deus Ex released years before 9/11.
Deux Ex was released in 2000
Fun fact about THPS3: In the Airport level, Neversoft originally included a goal which would involve terrorists.
This was in 96/97
NHL 2002 had to change a loading screen that featured the towers.
anyone else ever notice that kids who were born past 9/11 and didn't grow up in the "post 9/11 era" the rest of the world did are WAY different than the rest of us. What that change is I can't place, but i feel it's related to the absence of that factor.
I was 4 on September 11th 2001, and I remember watching the towers burn and people jump to their death, watching 2 planes crash into buildings and then later see them fall with hundreds of people in them does something to u as a person....
