James, this is possibly the BEST GIFT I have ever received!!! I love it SO MUCH. You did such an incredible job…I'm...in awe. And ok - here’s the thing: I feel like we need to make a *massive* one of these together. I’m talking bonfire status. Let’s make it happen - I’ll maaaybe even consider giving you that welding class you were wondering about 😉⚡️🔥
We are so glad it made it! Quality Streets are the best Christmas Chocolates. You are so brave sending something welded to the EXPERT! It looked so good. Happy Christmas Hacksmith! -Ruth & Shawn
Why did that scene at the end feel like one of those scenes from apocalypse movies where the protagonist chills out in an abandoned Walmart and cooks beans. Loved it
That is so cool! I think it's my favorite Hacksmith project yet, and since this is relatively easier to make small scale for us normal people, I have a feeling a lot of viewers (including myself) will be inspired by this one.
Can tiny salted metal rings or something be placed around the holes so that the flames have different colours which can be arranged according to the spectrum. It could be cool as well.
I’ve built one similar to this, but began experiencing problems when using for extended periods of times because the tube heats up to incredible levels due to the flames, and will destroy the speakers. I would have gotten some copper tubing and done some light water cooling, or used some cheap heat pipes and air coolers near the speaker ends to keep the speakers cool. Doing this on the outside shouldn’t affect performance or acoustics.
Firstly, amazing job on this project! Secondly I'm a huge Hawkeye fan and with his series wrapped up I think it's the perfect time to see what you guys could come up with for trick arrows!!
That song at the end is called Dance of the sugar plum fairy, a very old classical piece by Piotr Tchaikovsky. I don’t think credit in the description would be of any use…
I think a possible revision of the design would be to install the speakers facing the same direction versus the mirrored direction, that way assuming the speakers are synced you would get the flame to interact with the treble and mids, while also getting a good sound. Keep up the awesome content hacksmith!
With a speaker at both ends, seems like the pressure waves will be combining, providing a modified wave form inside the tube. Especially when using the frequency generator, it almost looked like at some frequencies the waves were cancelling each other out.
You are the same guy who made his dream come true! You inspire ordinary people like me!) P.S. I am still intimidated by your scar on your arm after your baseball game...
I’m ngl idk if they have done this already cuz it’s been a while since I’ve been to the channel. But the hacksmith should totally make the iron man shield that took the blast from thanos’s power stone in infinity war
My physics teacher did this last year, was pretty cool, his was a less a less elaborate setup but it showed the waveforms a lot more clearly. Was also about 2.5m long.
@@WMCloseProtection85 I was wondering the same thing not specially cancelling out but creating a third one, so when they use the app to see a specific wave it doesn't really shows up
Would really love to see a bigger version! Reuben's tubes get better with size, in order to see a standing wave of the full frequency of human hearing (20-20000 hz) you would need to make it about 16 meters long, give or take a few meters depending on the pressure of the propane. But to see standing waves of 60hz, you'd just need to make it 5.5 meters long, so that's doable! It would look a lot cooler I bet.
that's such a cool idea and execution as always! I was curious from a science perspective if the 2 speaker setup directed towards each other in the tube may have cancelled out a clearer signal for the waveform? went to the comments thinking someone would have debated it but not? 😆 🤣
If the distance between the two speakers are of n times the wavelength + half the wavelength, it will cancel out (I'm assuming you meant the speakers facing each other?) If it's n times the wavelength, it will get amplified Do note that I haven't finished watching this video yet, and I'm translating from my Korean knowledge to English on the go so there could be slight errors Just wanted to answer since it was an interesting question ;)
Honestly this seems like something that could be added to the shop. Maybe it wouldn't be profitable but who knows, id pay like $200 for one with some Bose speakers in it or something. Would be really cool if it caught on but you guys were known for making the original brand! Could also just make a kit with no speakers included or cheaper ones that come with it but make room for speaker replacments. And also, I'm sorry, he's allergic to WHAT!
Awesome gift!! Question: with both speakers on opposing sides, are they setup as stereo? Or is one setup for a inverse waveform to keep from cancelling each other out?
I'm pretty sure there's destructive interference happening, no standing waves were present. Generally they're made with the speaker on one end and the gas intake on the other. It might still work okay if only one speaker is used at a time.
Another way to make the tube work is to have a balloon and the speaker next to it playing right into the balloon. This make the balloon vibrate to push the air molecules and the on turn push the flames. It’s more of a diy way to do it so you don’t have to have to have a special speaker.
I’m thrilled that you call it STEAM instead of just STEM. The A is the most important word in the acronym. It all starts with ART. That’s where creativity starts. Re-education is key here. Thank you!
It might have already been said, but by putting the speakers on both sides, a lot of your frequencies cross and cancel each other. Most larger units use speakers on a single side, so you can see the waveform in its entirety. Nigel Stanford's 'Cymatics' video actually shows a pretty good example of this.
James talking about how he is bad at welding reminds me of something he said in the storm breaker building project, “ A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain’t.”
"When in doubt, extinguish all fire" has to be one of my favourite instructions ever! I was brought here by the secret santa express and subbed and liked :-)
When he was using the wave generator and messing with it when it stoped the timing in the flames going out his face and the noise that started playing was just perfect
I started with your video at release and now I've finally watched all videos (3 hours later). And I warched some parts at 1.5 x speed for it to not take the entire evening.
Nicely done I knew how this was made by forcing the volume of the fire into a different shape and compressing it to a different way so it hits different
I wonder if in the prototype, the flames going out was a result of negative interference from the speakers’ two waves crossing. It seems like you would need to carefully consider the length of the tube in relation to the length of the sound waves and ensure they are somewhat out of phase.
Please make this something people can buy. Amazing Christmas gift idea, or something to have in your home, as a musician or enjoyer of controlled fires
