  • In this video I explain how to tell what size propane tank you have a 100# cylinder or a 100 gallon tank. I give you a little bit of a propane 101 course. We go over capacity, water capacity and propane capacity.
    Propane is unique and there is quite the learning curve when dealing with it. Previously, I worked in the propane industry and spent much of my day explaining it all!
    I hope this video helps you with the very common dilemma about the 100# and the 100 gallons propane tanks.

    Great video, we are switching from oil to propane here and the company will be replacing our 25 year old oil boiler with a veesman high efficiency boiler, they are installing three 420 LB tanks which we are going to lease. I don't want the added issues of looking after them and paying to replace them after 10 years.

      I remember when we converted from oil to propane…it was so nice to regain that space in our basement where the oil tank was located:)
      The propane tanks will far outlast 10 years. If they only last 10 years it’s due to some sort of manufacturing issue.
      I’m excited for your new propane heating journey! Congratulations 🎉

      @@mamashalldo here the regulations are the tanks have to be replaced after 10 years, the insurance says 10 years also, seems like a tad early to me also so that is why we are leasing. that way the propane company excepts all liability for them over the 10 year period. and changes them out at that time.

    • @mamashalldo

      It sounds like they recertifying the tanks after 10 years. There are a couple different ways to re-certify tanks. 420# tanks come in two forms of manufacture a DOT Cylinder and a ASME Tank. The DOT Cylinders do require recertifications the ASME do not. My 420# tanks are ASME so no recertifications needed there. My 100# tanks are DOT cylinders and therefore I need to have them inspected periodically.
      Recertifications can be completed a couple different ways which grant different amounts of time until the next recertification is due. DOT tanks are good for 12 years from manufacturing and then need recertification every 5-10 years depending on how the recertification ( or some say “requalifying”) is completed. Sounds like they are using DOT tanks and the need to remove them is to recertify them.

  • @craiglittle7367
    @craiglittle7367 2 роки тому +2

    Very impressive.
    Not many people understand this.
    However…420s are either DOT cylinders or ASME tanks.
    If they have a plate, they’re ASME and are classified as 100 gallons.
    If they don’t have a plate and the info is stamped in the collar, they are DOT cylinders and classified as a 420 pound tanks.
    DOT are cylinders and classified by weight.
    ASME are tanks and classified by gallons.
    Anyway…good job.

      @mamashalldo  2 роки тому

      Thank you:). It is tricky...we say a 100 gallon capacity but in actuality it would hold 96 gallons. Of course this is all subject to temperature, and the exact placement of the bleeder internally. Often you don't get a true 100 gallons into a 420# or 120 tank...it may be a hair over or a little bellow. Just to add to all the confusion with it all:)

      @@glhandy7481 Consumption on both of these appliances can vary a good bit. If a stove has standing pilots it will have considerably more consumption. Also, the amount of cooking…canning uses more propane. Clothing dryers can vary a lot too…size of the household, drying everything or just as needed. At least a 100 gallon tank / 420# tank and that will insure you a gauge which will be. Are you planning on leasing or buying a tank?

      Glad it was a help to you:). Thank you!
      A propane company would be able to sell you a tank. If your current provider does not sell tanks...call around most do. I am actually going to be doing a video on owning a propane tank vs. leasing a tank from the company in the near future.
      Also, on a side note. I am not sure how familiar you are with propane tanks, but most often people will purchase two 100 gallon tanks instead of a 250 gallon tank, if it is at all possible. The reason for that is that due to regulations a 250 gallon tank can not be directly beside the house, it must be at a minimum 10 feet from the dwelling. This adds additional cost and more equipment needed. The price point different between two 100 gallon tanks and a 250 gallon tank isn't that much. Your capacity of propane would be the same with both tank options. Just food for thought:).

    (Btu/hr)/3.412141633 = watts hr
    Pounds of propane x .236 = gallons of propane
    1 gallon of propane = 91452 btu
    If you empty a 100 gallon tank of propane in 2 days use you're using 10.5kw/hr wich points out that

      A 100lb that you transport and get filled by weight should be around $200 new and empty. These you can get through Lowes or fairly easily, but a delivery truck can’t fill it. A 100lb tank that a delivery truck would fill would be more expensive…I don’t know exactly but I would guess between $325-$400…just speculating. That tank would be easiest to find from a propane company.
      A 40lb to my knowledge only comes in a version which would require you to take it somewhere to get filled. I’m thinking about $125-$150 or so, also just speculation. These may be slightly harder to find then a 100lb tank but are still common. A lot of campers use this size. You could probably find one at a store similar to a lowes or Home Depot. Or someplace that deals in campers.
      I hope that helps:)

    IM still confused... If the 100lb skinny tank, AND ALL TANKS hold 80%. THEN your MATH ON ALL 4 your tanks is off. 25gal of propane ( in a 100lb Tank) means the true gallon size of propane is 20% more = a 30GAL PROPANE TANK is called the 100LB. WTF

    • @mamashalldo

      I have always wondered why whoever came up with all of this didn’t make it all just a little more logical. So I apologize…but it wasn’t me who came up with it. Hahah I would have done it differently. Things change around a little too when we are going from talking about tanks in # verse gallons…just to make it more confusing🙃🙄😞. I’ll try to explain a little further. When we are talking about tanks in #s we take the #s and divide by 4.26…this will give the gallons (approximately) a tank will hold (this calculation takes into account capacity abilities). When we talk about tanks in gallons we take 80% of the gallons in the tanks name and that will give us propane gallon capacity…if the tank is buried you could be looking at closer to a 85% capacity.

    • @mamashalldo

      That’s true:). It is commonly known to hold 100 gallons though, and depending on where the bleeder valve is set inside the tank and the temperature outside a total fill is somewhere close to 100 gallons 96 gallons plus or minus a little.

      @@mamashalldo lol Yes I understand this. It would be more informative to say in your video that propane tanks should only be filled to about 80% to provide a compressible vapour space since the propane liquid volume increases with temperature. If you filled the propane tank 100% and the ambient temperature increased, the PSV would release since liquids are not compressible. I liked your video and was just messing with you.
