This has become a favourite of mine now! Wonderful worship music to praise the Lord with. Beneath is the verse that this is based on. Malachi 3:1-3 “But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness”
I enjoy her mimics song expressions she s so on fire 🔥 and take me deep into the song only looking at her face expressions I understand the song of His glory who shall stand like refining fire her eyes tells all enjoying every second of it 🥺❤️
Oh my Lord the Bass! His runs are frighteningly powerful! I was NOT prepared for the Alto's voice! What a powerhouse!! The choir! it's been a real while since I heard such clear and light voices at 5:30!!! The orchestra and the conductor were magnificent indeed!!!! I am duly pleased :)
What a fabulous recording. The bass, the contralto and the boy's chorus: just perfect in rhythm, diction and balance. Hillary Summers is outstanding. Thanks.
That last note- dark and chesty was exactly how she should’ve sung the entire piece. She was good but those last few bars and especially that late note stole the show.
Undoubtedly the best rendition I have come across. Who is the female soloist? Her voice in the last few measures is harrowing. Brings chills each time. Peace.
@@Immortal__ see, that’s not a good answer. Kirby, is wonderful, but not a contralto. That’s like someone saying “I love apples, which type is this?!” “An orange.”
I sang about an hour and a half of Handel's, "Messiah" last year in the Mission Valley Choral Society here in the Northwest part of Montana. I had two solos. And sang tenor with the chorus, in everything else. It was a MASSIVE undertaking.
A refiner's fire does not incinerate. It purifies. It melts down silver or gold, separates out and burns up the impurities. Hilary Summers, the Welsh diva, is like a refiner's fire. Who shall stand, when SHE appeareth! This passionate Welsh woman is in charge. Fantastic. NON PLUS ULTRA And Alastair Miles, 'the finest bass of his generation', is a special treat as well.
I must be honest. I saw a clip of Hilary Summers singing this aria. And when I first saw the choir stand up after she was done, I thought that was their way of saying, "Yes honey. You better sing."
I personally prefer the bass to sing the aria, as it fits with the recitative. And because I'm a bass and I love to sing both back to back :) but this contralto's voice is probably the most perfect voice I have ever heard for this aria.

Theo94kr The term “alto” refers simply to the range. However in choral music it is a part in its own right. Contralto is simply a term to describe a woman singing the alto range.
Do you know, what she is doing now? I cannot find anything new from her :-( Her website is not updated since ca. 2 years, and it's so a pity, I would buy each and every recording of that art, it's the most beautiful performance of this aria I've ever heard. It would wish she makes recordings of all the famous oratorios :-) The Christmas Oratorio, the both Passions by Mr. Bach the Great, Eliah by Mendelssohn, etc. And some Bach Cantatas please. And thanks for the Petit Messe Solemnelle by Rossini, Hilary! I just want more :-) Much more
I do agree this is better sung by a contralto than a mezzo, but youve missed one thing which will trump a contralto, and which it was originally composed for - a countertenor!! Listen to james bowman or michael chance sing this, both are on UA-cam I think
I don't see the need to compare these. Just come to this version from Emma's and wow I love this too! In a DIFFERENT way! It is possible to love more than one interpretation/voice range perform this you know 🙄
James Bowman is incredible. His rendition of Stabat Mater is my all-time favourite. As far as 'who may abide' Emma Kirkby is by far #1 for me. Her rendition of 'Nulla in Pax' is angelic.

And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts. 6. For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

the s in his is a z, thats why you cant hear 's'. the other way to pronouse 's' i like say or such. it is not a vocalized consonant. although the orchestra sometimes matches her line, but in a couple of places she drops the s in refiner's' . who cares? she is so dynamic and musical and incredibly dramatic with that voice, to nitpick a couple of consonants? i agree, however, with you. if youre going to sing at this level, you better have you s/z vocalized and forward in the mask. in my opinion. x
Hilary's last note, singing the word "fire" just gives me the most awesome goosebumps!

Everything is impressive here: the bass, the alto, the choir, music...
The whole performance is VERY impressive.
he is out of tune in the deep notes
@@jandamskier6510 I’m sure he’s aware of that. You can’t guarantee perfection in every performance no matter the amount of talent and rehearsal.
A true and wonderful contralto.
The way he drops that vibrato at the bottom of every "shake" so geometrically is stunning and compelling.
Most incredible voice that the contralto has. The low Ab at the end is so rich
James Walton so rich and scary ! Love it!! 😁
You wouldn't argue with her, with a voice like that!

Emma Kirkby :)

Simply Perfect. The best performance I've heard from this aria. And Summers & Miles make an awesome interpretation.
