What do the following have in common?
    David Beckham
    Othello
    Persian nobility
    Ronald Reagan
    French aristocrats
    King Richard II
    James Bond
    Justin Timberlake
    Sean Combs
    Robert Downey Junior
They all leveraged the stylish power of a handkerchief or pocket square.
In today’s article I’m going to explain to you the major differences between a handkerchief and a pocket square.
A lot of the confusion surrounding the pocket square vs. handkerchief debate is actually the fault of style experts. We tend to use the terms interchangeably, but there is most definitely a difference.
    The rule of thumb is:
One’s for show and one’s to blow.
    Anyone want to guess?
    If you’re struggling, don’t despair:
The pocket square is for show and belongs in your jacket breast pocket.
The handkerchief is for show and goes in your back or front pants pocket or inside your jacket lower pockets/inside pockets.
A new handkerchief company, TSHU, was partly responsible for re-awakening my own interest in handkerchiefs.
The owners Marion and Thomas run their company out of Montreal and were kind enough to reach to me about their fantastic products: stylish and practical handkerchiefs for men like you and I.
FYI - I had them create two handkerchief packages for the stylish man looking to purchase high quality, hand-made handkerchiefs that will last a lifetime.

Love the video! My grandfather ALWAYS had a handkerchief on him, and a drawer full of them neatly folded. I never paid much attention to it, then a few months ago I ran across a package of them in a shop and grabbed them cause they reminded me of Gramps. Since that day I have come to fully understand why the people that carry them, swear by them. Time and time again I find that grandpa was always right when it comes to 'manly' things. ;) I never leave home without one. Think I'll have some monogrammed and see if I like that.

    Greetings from Ukraine Antonio.
Regarding Pocket Squares/Handkerchiefs I would as well suggest to spray it with you favourite perfume or cologne. Actually that's what gentlemen used to do in the past, cover they nose as walking through the stinking streets of the cities. You can use some long lasting perfumes for the pocket square and ligth colognes for handkerchiefs. As well when I travel I really like to spritz with light cologne the handkerchief and fold it into the luggage. So when I arrive to destination my clothes got a nice fresh smell.

  • @ColletteGurthet

My how things have changed. Men used to wear monogram handkerchief that you call pocket squares. They did carry a handkerchief for themselves but many of time if a lady was crying or needed a handkerchief it was the monogram one they gave her and from their pocket that could be seen. I remember them well. I came from San Francisco and a well dressed man always had one. If you couldn't have your shirts monogram at lease your handkerchiefs were.

Great video, the only time I had been told the difference besides this was by a friend's father. I fully agree with using handkerchiefs, they only get better with time, and are great when I am outdoors all day working. I myself have five or six, but am still lacking a true pocket square.

I am just starting to wear a pocket square. But always have carried a hanky. When I go to an event/gathering such as a wedding or funeral I will carry a hanky for my nose and also carry a well ironed hanky for someone that needs some maintenance during a good cry. That would be offered to a lady that needs help and is embarrassed for her situation of tears and her runny nose. If she keeps it fine if she gives it back fine. Several times the lady would keep it wash and iron it and return it to me. It is just the gentlemanly thing to do. Plus the word will get out that I am a gentleman.

    Antonio,
I have been following your channel for about a year, and you have helped me to improve my overall style, especially since my career has really taken off since graduating from MBA school at Texas A&M. I've recently began upgrading my shoes and have begun to recognize that many quality shoes companies are based out of foreign countries, such as England. For example, I've recently been shopping for chukka boots and noticed on the style forum that people recommend the Loake 1880 Pimlico or Loake Kempton. How do you go about shopping for shoes from companies based overseas and get the right fit in order to avoid having to return the shoes over and over and incurring horrendous shipping costs.
In addition, Paul Evans seems to be a great company, how can one ensure that the shoes will stand up over time (most shoes are beautiful when you first buy them and no reviews exist from people who have worn the Evans over a year) especially ones from a startup company? In other words, how can I tell that the leather quality and sole will be strong and durable over time from the moment of purchase assuming proper care? Thanks again!

    • @RealMenRealStyle
      @RealMenRealStyle  9 років тому

Jason Lee I personally own 7 pairs of their high quality shoes to include a pair of beautifully crafted wingtip dress shoes. Low quality footwear is held together with glue and made with cheap raw materials such as cardboard and paper that does not age well. You can save money in the long term by buying more expensive shoes that last for decades.

Always love your videos, and pleased and surprised that the Americans are still using handkerchiefs - I had thought from my Canadian relatives that it was only us archaic Brits that still perpetuated them. Agree with the elderly Ukranian gentleman that old is better - hankies need to be soft and pliable, and a new one has too much starch/stiffener; they need to be 'broken in.' Some of mine must be 40 years old :)

If you like to be a provider and a protector, It is classy to carry 2 handkerchiefs; one in your inner jacket pocket and one in your slacks’ pocket. One is to offer to the woman, one is for you. I wish this habit would come back; it is very sexy and comforting.
I know this is a place for men to learn more about being well dressed, etc. It would be nice if you recognized many women watch to learn things to help the men they love. The closing statement could be reflective of that.

    Hello, Antonio,
I've seen men (more than once in 007 movies, for instance) take their pocket squares out of their pockets and use it as a handkerchief. Isn't a cotton pocket square and a handkerchief the same thing? Isn't there an overlap among what is called a pocket square and a handkershief?
    Thanks.

Great video I've also got some old Handkerchiefs which I only use at home. I've got an off topic question: I'm in college and I kinda want to update my school outfit from pretty casual mostly jeans sneakers and very casual shirts but I don't want to look "overdressed" if there is such a thing. When I go out on the weekend I still like to dress up wearing blazers chinos and some nice dress shoes/ boots.

I don’t remember a time my father didn’t have a handkerchief on him. He had good ones for work and going out and he used his older ones for weekends and at home. They last forever. Now there is a trend, which my daughter followed, where girls are carrying a loved one who has passed handkerchief on their wedding day. My father had already passed and he and my daughter were very close. She carried one of my father’s handkerchiefs in memory on her wedding. Some even have them sewn into their dresses. Just another use for the handkerchief.

Hey, Antonio! Great video! One question, though: is it ok to use a handkerchief in the breast pocket?
I think that's what Don Draper does on Mad Men, whereas Roger Sterling always has a fancily folded pocket square. It ends up being a small detail that perfectly characterizes both men (that's why it's such a great show). By the way, doesn't a handkerchief provides a more professional appearance? Let's say a young man is going for a job interview in a conservative environment (such as a law firm). Couldn't a pocket square, such as the one you're wearing, present a less serious image?
    Thanks!

    • @SONOFAZOMBIE2025
      @SONOFAZOMBIE2025 9 років тому +1

LucasAmericano Their squares have a tag-team effect on clients. It's subtle, but deliberate. Sterling's job is to butter the clients up, and his more open square gives a more relaxing and open signal to the clients. Draper is a closer - so his is more conservative; this show the clients that the firm also is professional and not rash. Hehe, also love the show.

So, I've been carrying a bona fide handkerchief now, two of them at a time, as a matter of fact, tucked safely in my right breast coat pocket, for six or eight months now, with the almost sole intention of having them available to give away when encountering a lady in distress.
In those six months, I've offered a handkerchief to a lady three times, twice to have it accepted unthinkingly and instantly, and a single time to have it declined. Both of the times it was accepted, each lady thanked more profusely, and made a reference to how pleasant it was to receive such an act of kindness. That made me feel pretty darn good.
I carry two so that i have one available to me, to use for wiping a sweaty brow or catching a sneeze or cleaning my glasses, while still having the other clean to give away.

JosephGallagher well normally you have at least 10-20 handkerchiefs, so they aren't washed daily, more like once a week. I think of it like a socks or underwear, because you can't wear the same piece longer than one day, but it doesn't mean you have just one and you wash it every day.

I've I always thought I dressed well, but I am wondering about your choices of patterns in your shirt, tie, pocket square and suit color. Nothing remotely matches let alone compliments the others. Is there some sort of mystery here we are to try unravel?

If it is well-designed, well-made and the colours are in good taste, it will look impressive on anyone. I wouldn't bother about trying to match the colours to your skin tone, though you will, of course, have a personal preference on the colours which you like to wear, anyway.
      Good luck!

Should one get rid of buying a box of tissues for home?
And just keep a pile of hankies on the coffee table instead?

    • @gammondog
      @gammondog 9 років тому +1

Son of a Zombie I can only speak for myself and say that as a guest I would be reluctant to use my host's "linen" to blow my nose into. It would seem odd to do that. Just leave a box of the finest tissues out for your guests and provide yourself and your family with the best hankies that you can afford. Also, the ladies might prefer tissues for make - up and lipstick applications. Leave a box of tissues in the "powder room". You'll still greatly cut down on your paper consumption. Especially during Allergy Season.

I hate tissues. They turn up in the wash no matter how carefully you check your pockets. Handkerchiefs and bandanas are so much more pleasant to use.Besides, washing your hands is the only way to be sanitary after blowing your nose. I don't think I have ever worn a pocket square with a suite before. I'll keep an eye peeled for a simple white one the next time I pass through a clothing store. They break up the symmetry a little and will make you stand out in a good way from the crowd.

+flashdamingo I used to tie a bandanna by the corner on my left belt loop, hanging freely and easily accessible whenever I needed to dry my hands, clean my glasses or anything else. Haven't worn it in a while though due to my current styles of dress.

Though i have question And very good one . Handkerchief are much better when is made out of 100% pima cotton or 100% silk? Which one will do the job better for taking care of sweat not the nose let's leave that out just to dry your sweat? Where can I find handkerchief in solid red or blue color without patterns ? The bad about the silk is that you have to dry clean them and the 100% cotton you can just wash them. That's my opinion on the difference

Pocket square is absolutely useless as it’s just decor. The handkerchief is extremely versatile and useful. Tissues are wasteful and non-eco friendly
