I am 71 years old and have just rejoined this amazing hobby after a break of around, er . . . . 60 years. You are probably around 50 my junior but your quick, precise tips and comments have been so helpful and are an inspiration to me. Thank you so much.
I found that if you put bluetack underneath fragile parts you can cut it off with a hobbyknife without it going to another dimension
Gregorie Morales I always lose hatch handles because they decided to escape the 3rd dimension
Relatable
What a great idea, thank you very much, of course it stands to reason that it's the smallest part and therefore the hardest to find.
the carpet monster under my desk is well fed! i'm forever dropping parts lol
I cut it with a knife while the side of my finger holds on to the piece 😊
This is probably one of the most inspiring videos I have watched in relation to model making. I expecially love the part where you reassure amateurs like me not to look at the really lovely models you see online. Amateurs and experienced experts are different. Experience experts takes weeks to complete 1 kit . But practice and practice is the key to become a a expert
That bit at the end was exactly what I needed. Thank you.
I think your attitude to the hobby of scale modelling is superb. It cheered me up no end and is applicable to pretty much any hobby. Thanks for the video, full of top tips.
I watch this often, as every time I still learn new things. Thanks!
Great tips Owen! I just started modelling again after a couple of years out of the business and these tips will certainly improve the look of my projects ;) Great to see that there are other people who keep modelling without an airbrush, and still have a great result. Keep up the good work! Grtz from Belgium.
You are the man and very inspiring for modeling without airbrush. I've been watching your vids and hopefully will be able to start my kit this week. Can't wait. Thank you!
Agreed! I have a stack of kits I haven't touched in years and years because keep thinking I need to wait to get an airbrush so that I can achieve some museum-quality level of perfection. I had fun painting with a brush as a kid/teen. These videos remind me of what can be achieved without purchasing/maintaining lots of gear.
WarriorPoet01 I personally prefer painting with a brush, it sort of makes you appreciate the model a bit more. I think it adds personality to the model and makes it truly yours, if that makes any sense. I often do my own thing when it comes to painting, i stick to the colours but i have a bit of fun with the camouflage. What would i know, i'm pretty new to the scale modelling scene. The first kit i ever got was in 2013 and that was a P-40 Warhawk by Airfix (1:72). I painted it in black and brown (horrible i know) because i didn't know much of anything about aircraft. But now i think i'm on my way to being an expert.
Uggghhhh so many words, if you make it down here leave a reply and say "hogwash" haha
Tim-Tam Smith hogwash:)
haha me too! I am preparing for my first model by learning from Owen. Indeed a nice teacher! :)
I'm getting back into modeling after about 10 years away. I used to airbrush- it wasn't much fun but did leave a great finish. Now I'm looking at enjoying the process more.
I like this. It's a very well-made video.
Thank you, I'm glad you appreciate the effort I out into the production :)
Quick Kits
Hey Owen! I use Mr White putty to fill gaps between parts, whenever I sand it to make it smooth, the excess putty gets caught on the sandpaper and makes it unusable after a short while. How can i remove the putty/filler from the sandpaper so I can use it again?
wipe it on your sleeve.
will pattison
Tried it before, didn't work
try a wire brush, the small kind. There's a 3 pack with wire/brass/nylon brushes, use the brass one first, start off lightly ( sold in £ shops/wilko's/hardware or online shops) . Also try putting some (blackboard) chalk on the sandpaper first, this sometimes helps, rub some on then tap lightly to remove excess.
Wow! I am amazed (and love the tips) as to how you painted the airplane without an airbrush or spray can.
Never have I found such a simple and great way to hand paint with amazing results.
Great as not all of us can have a spray station.
Cheers!!
enjoyed this one... particularly the message at the end, and don´t forget to have FUN! nice seing you!
The last tip on using PVA glue is something I never thought of and has certainly improved the quality of my models. I have to give my thanks
I made my first model in 1976 and I couldn't put it better than this. Precise, crisp and to the point. Every novice modeller needs to see this video.
Back into model making after about 30 years very good tips and great videos 👍👍👍👍
Very useful tips Owen, my models are starting to look a lot better now. I'm practising with starter kits and acrylic paints and really taking my time with them.
I've watched this video a few times and find it very useful for improving my models.
Been painting models for 30 or more years, thank you I learnt some new techniques here.
Thanx so much for encouragement at the very end.......old buggers like me DO get intimidated by the PERFECT models I see...and was nice to see BRUSH painting..... did that for years and still do but am being daring by buying spray cans.....getting better at it and I will say such is better than brushing for big areas !
Get an airbrush. I started modelling 50 years ago gave it away late teens and re-commenced when my daughter in law gave me a kit for my birthday. My eyes aren't as good and my hand not as steady. However, an airbrush with a fine propelling pencil to do panel lines has made every one a winner so far. The finish is unbelievable.
Here's is another suggestion I would make, piggy-backing off of the narrator's final comments: No matter how bad your earliest efforts are, save them and display them. I used to trash some of my earliest stuff, but not all of it. Over time, I've come to enjoy looking at those early disasters because they show me how much I've improved. When I start to get frustrated and think I just suck, I look at the progress I have made and remind myself that the more I build, the better I get.
I do that myself :D I have a box of really old stuff stored in the loft
Quick Kits Yeah, i had a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, my very first kit ever, and i painted it horribly and didn't put decals on it. But, despite all the other kits i trashed, i kept it. Sure, it's missing it's landing gear and the rear tail fins, and the canopy, and the propellers, and the exhaust...
By the way, sorry QuickKits for being on a commenting spree lately, i just discovered your channel a few days ago and your videos are really awesome and helpful and i can't help myself from commenting.
A fantastic aid for my return to scale modelling after almost 30 years. Thanks.
Love the tip about using PVA glue for the canopy! Also, the tip for scratching paint off the canopy is a good one too.
Concise and to the point... bloody good video!
Well done and love the comments and the end about not being put off by what is seen out there, because the work is fantastic!. I had model-envy there for a while!!!
Great vid! Love the part about things you can’t teach. You can see that you love models and wish for others to love it too. You’re a fantastic teacher!!
Thank you very much :)
Just started watching your videos and I really enjoy them. I've been looking for a UA-cam channel that provides clear and effective techniques for modeling, as I don't always find reading about it as beneficial; and I think I've finally found it. Keep up the great work
Thank you that's great to hear!
Awesome im going to get back into this hobby after 40 years now
Great way to pass the time
Very good tips compressed into 3 minutes. This was a no-nonsense video (they are hard to come by). Thanks!

Very very kind of you to put this together. Looking forward to getting started on a kit now! Cheers!
Thanks! Hope your build goes well!
Thankyou buddy. I was tinkering with the idea of model making then the vids I watched was all spray guns and perfection and then u showed me pegs and brushes.. So I think its down to the model shop this week. Bless you
I've just started flying, and have bought my first airfix models, thanks for the advice dude!
Great video, it covers a lot and answers a lot of questions. Thanks very much

Top-flight presentation - have been building for years and still I learnt something new.
Great videos, after a period of about ten years I want to get back into scale modelling, but really up my game. These videos very helpful as I did not have youtube for tips and tricks back then!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏 made a massive improvement to my models but still got to master it even more 👍
Simple, easy to follow tips in a well presented video. Very nice indeed.👏
Just found this vid and it's incredibly helpful. Thank you for putting it together
Genuinely the most inspiring video I've seen in months
Hey- Thank you for sharing. Appreciate your videos and I certainly picked up a few tricks. Keep up the good work mate. Cheers 👍🏻
Very good tips on model making Owen 👍👍👍
Bloody handy tips delivered in quick manner!
Great video, dude! You've saved a lot of newbies hours, days and dollars of frustration with this! Good points all around, especially about having fun and enjoying the hobby!
Thanks mate I'm glad you think that!! :)
very cool tips thanks, i did not believe the simplicity of some of your tips and the excellent results. one tip i loved was was pva for clear canopy. i asked so many model shops for a great glue for clear parts and over the years have spend so much on recommended glues that all failed on clear parts. tried pva once and it was perfect. it never occurred to me to even try wood glue.
Fantastic video and truly an asset to the hobby!😊
Thank you! This video and your other videos are so helpful. I've learned a lot of new techniques I'm dying to try.
Thanks, I hope they work well for you!
Well I'll just be darned after having been an avid modeler for well over 30 years you even taught me something. And the link to paint conversion charts is most helpful, thank you sir. Well done video as well. I rather like the format, packed with useful info but not long and drawn out. Nice job.
