I'm glad Chris decided to visit our planet.
Every time these three play together I feel content with the world. Thank you!
This is one of my favorite Bach compositions. So simple. Such a perfect little melody. I can almost imagine him with a grin on his face writing this, in his happy place.
To which perfect little melody are you referring? What Chris Thile is playing on the mandolin from the outset (and what laymen are typically humming when they think of this piece) is the ritornello, meant to provide a contrast with, and enhance the cantus firmus. The latter (the actual «melody» that is sung in the chorale) sets in later and is played in this case by Yo-Yo Ma on the cello. No doubt that the ritornello is beautiful, but what matters is the cantus firmus. To judge from the comments, this is not generally understood.
Exquisite, and so is their Bach Trios album. Also outstanding is Chris's solo Bach album. Must-buy music.
Wow Wow, it was hard to type this with tears in my eyes
They should just name the show “Chris Thile’s playground” because that’s really what it is
Be still my heart. WOW!
Sublime Bach and an excellent rendition of it here.
Wonderful! Makes one feel warm and fuzzy! An aural dessert!
Wow, Yo -Yo & friends on Prairie Home!
Ejem... It's Chris Tile and friends, if you watch closely.
So wonderful. Thank you for uploading! I've been watching for it
Brilliant !
I like the reaction Chris has when he hits a single wrong note at 2:39. It's really subtle but you can tell he's internally cursing.
Beautiful!
Lovely
Please, please, please issue this as a mp3! Such an incredible rendition of this piece!
Their album "Bach Trios" includes this piece. It's a studio recording, not this performance, though.
In all candor I'm surprised to find Yo-Yo Ma here, but in any event this was truly remarkable.
All three recorded an album together a few years ago, along with fiddler, Stuart Duncan. Look for "Goat Rodeo Sessions"
I'm doing this in violin for an audition to go to Germany.
I want yo yo ma to be my dad.
Is there anywhere to download or purchase a copy of this performance?
The three of them recorded an album called "Bach Trios", and this piece is on it. Not this performance, but this piece.
10/10 for the performers, 3/10 for the sound balance. It was hard on my headphones.
UP for the Mandolin
DOWN for the Cello
UP for the Mandolin
DOWN for the Cello
And it only played through the right speaker well, which it's not my headphones, I checked.
vantarinitel It was mixed live on radio. You are hearing it via UA-cam. Give the sounds guys a break. Buy the recording if you need better balance. It is lovely.
You cannot tone down the cantus firmus (played by Yo-Yo Ma on the cello) in favour of the ritornello (played by Chris Thile on the mandolin).
