Him being scared to tell his wife is a clue right there that she will not agree and that he is scared to loose her because of this. So why risk it if there are no issues in the marriage? Okay I have to give my opinion with out thinking like a American. I think if this a part of his culture then I think he should introduce the wife to the woman. With being honest. Because let's be clear if it's normal then they are the woman who keeps the house and raise the children. I would have to be friends with the woman, meaning I have to like her. Be able to talk to her enjoy her company have the same values. Bring a total stranger home thinking we all are going to get along isn't going to work. Not if he wants a happy and pleasant home to come to everyday. This should be a session they make together so they can all live together. ( now I'm American I personally couldn't do it who am I to judge)
I'm Ghanaian and am very familiar with Nigerian culture too having grown up round many. Some women don't mind as they expect their husbands to cheat regardless because a man having more than one women is not seen as taboo, note that this is not the case for Christians though, who should only have one wife.
But Muslims or African traditionalists are permitted. That being said, there are some women who absolutely cannot handle that and I think Mike's wife falls into the former as he mentioned she's not adverse to the idea.
But I think he's worried because things are easier said than done and once his wife actually realises that he's keen on marrying someone he's already been seeing for TWO YEARS, she'd be livid.
Also sounds like he's marrying a new wife for kids because it is not common in Nigeria for a married couple to stay married for almost 10 years without kids, at all.
They'd think there's something wrong with the woman, and the family will start pressurising the man to find someone new. Not saying this is the case but it sounds like it.

Tasha, I doubt very much he is Nigerian. If he was Nigerian he would not be asking you unless the women he was dealing with are American and I mean that respectfully - even then I have my doubts that they are Nigerian. If he was Nigerian he would tell his parents, aunts and uncles who would then tell the woman and her side of the family instead 9f coming to a stranger - I say that respectfully.
The thing that is an issue in his marriage is 9 years and he has no children. Perhaps he should resolve this issue first before taking another women. He could be infertile and marrying another woman in the hopes that he has children - which this is all about cause he mentioned that in the first part of his letter.
Lastly, culture or not, not all countries on the continent of Africa are accepting of the "small house" and those that are, a majority of women never get over it and physically divorce them self from the situation.

According to the scriptures she can not divorce accept for adultery or unless her husband is physically abusing her. The husband also MUST PROVIDE FOOD SHELTER CLOTHING AND DUTY OF MARRIAGE. Monogamy as we see does not work looking at the high divorce rate. Polygamy is also another form of love and because it’s not from your culture or you don’t understand it does not give you the right to condemn it or be disdained about it. Dear Tasha, I agree with you. However seeing that the 1st union has no children, this man may be under some pressure to produce a child by family, even if he is not saying so. Keeping in mind that this is considered normal in some cultures, some women may even agree with the 2nd union if they have issues with childbearing. It is not an easy decision and he is certainly being very careful before making a decision that he will regret. Kudos to him, there are men out here with 20 children and just as many baby mamas and they do not make a contribution to any of the kids's lives financially or otherwise.
