      @Crystal Palms Exactly! Yes, black actresses are treated unfairly in Hollywood, but Monique is NOT an A list comedian like Dave Chappelle or even "in" at the moment like Amy Schumer. She is on the D list and cannot bring in the type of audience they can bring. I feel like she's self-sabotaging.

      MissKitae Right! legend or not. Its like Diana Ross demanding Beyonce or taylor swift prices! Yes you are a legend but we are talking numbers in 2018 why is that so hard for her to understand?

    • @DjSsaBackward
      @DjSsaBackward 6 років тому +9

      MissKitae true, you should negotiate, that's why they invented the word. In her case she should except the chance, over the money. Giving the chance to stand before an audience when I'm blackballed is a fortune in itself, I would of for free. Then turned it to millions, if I were truly good and relevant.
      She have been so gassed by her opportunist husband that she can't see 500,000 as enough to get the ball rolling in her favor. She forgot she's not offered anything, anymore and in that case half a mill is great. Also the amount Dave got has to be divided between 4 specials. I looked up her comedy schedule it was for 3 shows at an Improv and one at the Apollo, each only housing hundreds not thousands. "Eat the Cake Annie Mae"

    Tasha you are telling *the truth*. Monique messed up with accepting that lowball offer for Precious. Unfortunately, she messed up more by not accepting this 500k (3m?¿). She should have used it to produce a special and then sold it to them for 5 million w/ a cut through her own production company. She then should have went on tour and did it again for 10 million. She then should have signed a deal with Netflix with her production company to produce specials and original comedy series putting on other brothers and sisters. She then should have topped all of that by selling out an arena, filming it, and then selling it to Netflix for 20 million. At this point, Mo is just that usher in church telling you to give your last $20 instead of $5, because God is going to bless you. I can't with her.

  • @creekboie3277

      I love Mo, I think that husband is in her head giving her bad advice. I can't boycot Netfix though, Netflix has opened up so many doors for black people, independent films, just to mention a few. Not to mention Shonda rhimes just signed a huge deal with them. 4 year, 100 million dollars! Mo is not relevant right now. I think she is doing herself a disservice. I hate to see her do this to herself and her career.

    • @ellebailey5358
      @ellebailey5358 5 років тому +6

      I don't think taking that amount of money was the problem for her because it was an indie movie and plenty of known actors take significantly lower for a project they stand by. What messed her up was not promoting. All actors (at least the primary characters) know promoting is pretty much a requirement. She was the main person in the movie what type of message does that send if she won't promote a movie she is in as the main person? Why would anyone else want to pay her a major amount of money for a project that she may or may not promote? Either way she screwed herself and she's too in her feelings to realize it was due to her own actions. With the exception of Oprah......she did her dirty!

      @isaiahcaston4539 2 роки тому +2

      @@ellebailey5358 she specifically said she promoted domestically as per the terms of her contract. The issue was that she was asked to promoted internationally for free, are you gonna work for free if someone asks you? Do then why should she? Her agreement was with Lee Daniels, not lionsgate, not oprah and Tyler perry.

    • @ellebailey5358
      @ellebailey5358 2 роки тому +4

      @@isaiahcaston4539 No, I would not work for free. But I'm not a business Monique is. From what I understand (I could be wrong), they offered to take care of travel, room and board for the time she was there and few extra days for her and her family. No she wasn't getting paid but she wasn't losing money either. She could have used the opportunity to network and further her career
      Should they have treated her that way because she chose not to participate in the extra promo...no, of course not. But she also could have handled it a different way so it would not have had such a negative impact on her and her career. But all this is easy to say when I wasn't the one living it.

    The studio picks up the travel and lodging expenses for promotional work overseas. She wouldn't have had to go into her pocket for that. And some top actors - actors with bigger acting resumes that have actually achieved stardom, will sometimes take scale to do a role in a smaller film. Her ego got her into this mess. NetFlix doesn't care about an acting Oscar when they're looking at your value for a comedy special. Those other comedians that got more money from NetFlix are more proven draws. I don't think Schumer is funny, but there's a HUGE audience out there that does. It goes without saying what Rock and Chappelle pull.

    I’m in my 30’s and this is what I’ve realized- I’ve worked so hard to be myself and live an authentic life but to survive in life, you have to be fake with fake people. It sucks but that’s how the game is. Luckily, you do have a choice. If you’re lucky enough to find real and like minded people you can kick it with it, then go ‘head but if you need to work or be surrounded by the fakes bc it’s obligated, then do you’re best, suck it up, and play the game. You don’t need to be best friends but establish your boundaries and make an emotional disconnect and remember that you’re just doing what you have to do. Not everyone in this world is real and no matter how much you try to get them to see it, they’ll never get it and make YOU look like you’re crazy. This can be applied to people at work, families, and communities everywhere. Protect your heart always ❤️
    Also, another thing I learned is that you can’t always trust your own kind. I’ve seen my mom go through it, my Hispanic, Chinese, Nigerian friends/family go through this. We’re taught that people in your culture will have your back...that’s not always the case and if anything, some people will screw you over more bc of it. Don’t let down your guard bc someone’s black/Asian/Hispanic just like you, always look out for you

      K de la Cruz thank God it didn’t take me being 30 to catch up on this world’s fakeness, caught it at 27 in 2016. Wish I did sooner, now I leave my emotions out of everything and treat people like business partners.

    • @BeautifulDreamerK
      @BeautifulDreamerK 6 років тому +8

      Bella Aldama same here. I’m like, “why didn’t I get this at 25? Or younger?” I think we can all recognize fakeness (even at that age and with certain people) but when you see it more in the real world as a whole or attach it to substance, it really changes you. When you see grown ass people or aunties you’ve grown up respecting be fake, it’s mind blowing. You’re right on the money girl- most people see you as “business”, therefore you gotta do the same

    • @Xena395
      @Xena395 6 років тому +6

      K de la Cruz we did see it, but when you have a good heart you always give people the benefit of the doubt. Now I don’t give people tryouts, now you make one mistake, you’re out( even in dating. People can do what they want with their lives, but I don’t go back to boyfriends. Forgiveness after cheating, or they’re treating with no respect, the man making them chasing him. Not me, on strike and you’re out)I don’t play second chances, because what you did was not a mistake and was well thought out. Always see what you’re getting out of a situation, before you think with your good heart.( whether it’s relationship, school, job)You always have to look out for yourself, because people are about theirs and their money. The only person who genuinely have my back is my mom.

      Bella Aldama you are spot on! We did see it and I think now we’re much stronger and wiser... we are warriors and no one will knock us down. You’re so lucky your mom has your back. My mom can get fickle-minded, depending on the situation lol but man, because of what we know now, we are so much better. In the words of nene, “I’m rich, bitch!” CHEERS 🥂 😊

    It's not about Mo devaluing her worth. Netflix doesn't care what you were paid elsewhere. What THEY care about is HOW MANY VIEWERS YOU WILL BRING IN. How many subscribers would stay because of you. How many NEW subscribers would come because of you. That is why Amy, Dave, and Chris got those deals. They have a measurable fanbase that Netflix would expect to come over to watch him.
    Monique after winning her Oscar sat around waiting for the big deal to come along instead of building her brand. For almost 10 years she did that. And what happened? When she FINALLY starts doing stand up touring, she STRUGGLES to sell out a 440 capacity tiny venue.
    Netflix cares about ONE thing. RETURN on INVESTMENT. Not how pretty her resume is. She don't have the numbers anymore.

    I agree with most of you you said however Monique was offered 3 million with the condition that she audition for the big wigs at Netflix she refused so Netflix said Ok then if you won’t audition then will give you $500,00.00 without having to audition. In the business is all about money not necessarily about your resume. Everybody know that when you make a movie you have to promote it you see it all the time. Monique over extended herself at the she had her TV show and was doing a comedy tour. I saw an interview from where she said and this was back then that she said no to going to can because she wanted to spend time with her family which she should do however because she failed to promote the movie she was labeled as difficult and nobody wanted to work with her. A lot of people advised her to go promote the movie and she didn’t listen. They were trying to protect her but she didn’t see it that way and now we come to this. You think HBO or Showtime is going to give her a special now with all this shit. I truly doubt it.

    They actually offered her $3 million. But they wanted her to audition for them. She felt above an audition, so they offered her $500k without the audition. She didn't like that either.
    She tried to cite her Oscar win as her bargaining chip, but she won that shit for a drama role. Not her comedy.
    This is all about ego.
    She's NEVER been offered $3 million for a single project EVER. If she wasn't so in her feelings, she would have taken the 3, killed the audition, killed the special, and THEN came back to renegotiate.
    She brought forth her OWN demise. And I'll be DAMNED if I cancel my Netflix because of her pride issues.
    Plus, I'm grandfathered in, too lmao

    • @DiaAkin
      @DiaAkin 6 років тому +9

      TremendouslyTanya
      Who gets a "receipt" for an "offer?"
      Hollywood negotiations are no different than regular job salary negotiations. You sit down with someone representing the company, discuss the salary, and when terms are met, you put it in writing THEN. No one conducts business of that magnitude through email as emails can be edited by both the sender and receiver and fo that reason, NOT admissable in court as evidence.
      Don't drink the Monique Kool-Aid. Notice how NOBODY else who's had a special on Netflix, from Deon Cole to Amy Schumar to Chappelle, has had a problem with what they were offered. But Monique seems to have a problem with, well everyone.
      EVERYONE isn't doing her wrong. When you're having issues with EVERYONE you're dealing with, the problem isn't everyone else. It's you.
      I'm not a Monique fan, but I do respect her accomplishments. She's done some pretty solid things throughout her career. But NONE of them justify her overinflated ego of where she "thinks" she is and where she actually is. Her undoing in the entertainment industry is by her own hand. Not anyone elses.

    Gender bias and racial bias is definitely a real thing NO DEBATING but this doesn’t apply with Monique!!!! It’s a valid issue that takes all attention off Monique to make you feel like she has to win by default!!!! Pretty smart I have to say!!!
    Amy Dave AND Chris all did tours and shows before inking a deal with Netflix!!!! Amy did 150 shows selling out arenas!!!! Chris toured doing like 50+ shows!!!! And Dave even did regular comedy club shows when he didn’t really have to!!! His buzz was so big coming back from Africa he could have just got a deal right off the top!!!!
    Dave AND Chris have accolades and decoration too but still took time to get back out there and build!!!! They made their buzz so big that they all had multiple offers and 1 of them being HBO!!!!
    Then we have Monique who all of her decoration comes from a movie that wasn’t even a comedy!!!! Known in stand up for 10-15 min sets and the Queens of Comedy as Her biggest stand up which involved 3 other females!!! Being a person who is rumored to be hard to work with on top of all that (which is a bad rumor to have but not enough for a blackball)!!!
    I fucks with Monique but as a SOLO stand up comedy her body of work is solid but not spectacular!!!! And even if it was, it was so long ago that people almost forgot she was had a stand up career!!!!
    She probably walked into Netflix office and slammed the Oscar on the desk and said pay me!!!! Shit don’t work like that being realistic, because the fact is SHE ONLY DID TWO SHOWS before she decided to get with Netflix!!!!
    So people out here doing 50+ shows busting they ass (even the legends) and Monique comes with a Oscar and 2 shows and think she get bag???
    She could easily put her own money up or do 50/50 ventures like how Kevin Hart do!!! Why run to Netflix or HBO to be under them when you could be a partner on the venture???? Definitely not thinking like a boss on this!!!!
    She ain’t put in the work to leverage herself to be in position PERIOD but definitely hope she get a bag!!!!
    We as people definitely need to be careful who we follow!!!! Blindly following people can result in us drinking our own death (Jim Jones)!!!! Especially when it’s a touchy subject (like race/ gender equality) involved, we have to beware of hidden agendas!!!!

    Only thing I disagree with is that Lee Daniels was never going to give anybody 1 million for appearing in Precious, not even a White woman. The budget for the entire film was only 10 million. It's a producers job to keep the costs down, you should know this it's common knowledge. It was Mo'nique's responsibility or her agents to ask for more or turn it down if they price wasn't right. Ain't Lee Daniels responsibility to make sure folks get their money. Friends and money don't mix. They ain't friends.

  • @BigHenFor
    @BigHenFor 6 років тому +93

    Unfortunately, you're absolutely right. You have to transition from talent to producer. Not only do you extend your reach, you extend your influence. You take control over your fate by learning how the business works, and making it work for you. As an employee, you cannot pick and choose: you get given what you get. When you start producing, you can develop multiple projects for yourself and others, and so develop multiple income streams over time. Monique has not grasped this essential thing about herself: she needs to stop thinking like an jobbing actor, and start thinking about herself as a long-term investment. If she did, she might start reigning in her abrasiveness and be more businesslike.

    I'm so glad you are the one saying this. People see my pic and don't know that I'm not white and then attack me for saying the exact same thing. I think Monique's problem is the people she surrounds herself with. I honestly wish she would fire her hubby as manager. It is better for the marriage anyways. She should get a good manager, mend fences and get back to work.

      Monique was not ready to forgive her family and that moment on Oprah sent her over the edge. On the other hand because of what O has gone through herself, she properly recognized that Mo was still stuck. O properly meant well but she was playing God with Mo's healing. It backfired and 8 years later Mo is still paying the cost of her festering wounds.

    Amazing breakdown of the situation. This all started with Precious. Instead of taking peanuts and then acting like a diva to get paid for promotion and press (thus branding herself as difficult) she should have made boss moves and produced it. Crossover from talent to production. Facts.
