    Dr. Guymon explains the optics of VR and the Oculus Quest 2. The focal point is set for 1.3 meters or 4 feet out. If you wear glasses to see that far out, then you may need to wear glasses in VR. You won't need to wear reading glasses or your bifocals in VR because the focal point is fixed no matter what you are looking at in VR.

      @@DrEyeGuy I just got my contacts. Using the headset is definitely more comfortable and the image in games is quite clear. This is also my first time using contacts so walking around without glasses and seeing clearly is quite a strange experience. The downside is the difficulty of putting them in and the fact that I feel like they aren't properly centered on my pupil and reading text for example feels a bit blurry on one eye. As soon as I can find a company that ships prescription Quest 2 lenses to Romania, that's what I'll be buying.

    Maybe somewhat of an edge case, but I wear mono-vision contacts. Meaning my right eye is corrected for seeing distance but my left eye is corrected for reading. This means I can read up close and use my phone without reading glasses and I can also see distance.
    When I look at something at 1.3 meters / 4 feet, I see the object in perfect focus and sharp with my right eye and a bit blurry with my left.
    What are your thoughts on this contact lens setup and VR?

    Hi, i have a question
    I ordered Vroptician lenses 2 years ago with a old prescription and haven't use the headset for a while and i want to play it again.
    But I just got my new prescription and the value from my last one jumped from
    R : -2.50 (+2.25) 90°
    L : -4.25 (+3.50) 85°
    (2019)
    to
    R : -0.50 (-2.50) 180°
    L : -0.25 (-3.50) 180°
    (2023)
    Is that a massive jump ? Would the difference be super obvious ?

    HI, Dr. Great video highlighting those points, you truly enlightened me on this subject, so appreciate it:). Is that maths correct for farsighted because I have +2.5 lenses for farsighted prescription lenses, and I have to reduce that to around (+2.5 - 0.75= 1.75 D) for VR use. I tried it with an old pair of (1.5 D) glasses, and it was a lot clearer than my newer (2.5 D) ones which seem blurrier in the distance on the F1 22 game. I thought coz it's 0.75 D away in vr already, you need to subtract it unless of course, it's just me being confused, or it's my eye condition?

    Great video, just what I was looking for! Unfortunately, the 2 VR headsets I'm considering haven't published their focal points (HP Reverb G2 v2 and Pico Neo 3 Link). Does anyone have a clue? People on Reddit claim all headsets are set to 2m, which contradicts what Dr Guymon says here about the Quest 2.
    Also, a question for the good doctor. I am nearsighted and have two prescriptions. One for very far away (driving a car) and one for 75cm away for PC work. There's quite a difference, for instance my right eye goes from -1 on the monitor glasses to -2 on the glasses for driving my car. 1.3m seems a bit too close to wear those and would cause fatigue, but the monitor glasses are not giving a really sharp image. Should I get another prescription specific for that distance or can I calculate this myself based on the two prescriptions I have?

    • @DrEyeGuy
      @DrEyeGuy  2 роки тому +1

      You could calculate it, but if you able to get a specific prescription, it would be even better. That could also give you a warranty with reloptix if you are to upload the prescription.

    Thanks for the great video. Answered a lot of questions but I still have one. It sounds like in the video you're saying the VR lens insert companies take your standard prescription and modify it based on the information within that prescription for the correct focal length at the 1.3 meters. Is this correct?
    The reason I ask is, what happens if I have my eye doctor give me my exact prescription at the 1.3 meters? Will the VR lens companies still modify that prescription as well (making it incorrect) based on the formula they have, or will they make it specific to that prescription without any kind of math or modification to that prescription.
    It seems like it would be better to give them my exact prescription at that focal length versus some kind of extrapolation based on my overall prescription. I know you're saying there's some leeway due to the eyes being able to focus within a certain range but I think having it has close to exact as possible would be best.
    I know this is a long question, so my apologies. I just want to make sure they're not going to do some automated math if I give them my exact prescription at that focal length. Thank you and keep up the great videos.

    • @DrEyeGuy
      @DrEyeGuy  2 роки тому +1

      Excellent question. Some VR companies will only modify the distance prescription if you have a "significant" ADD power. If you put in your distance prescription (or whatever prescription you put in there), they will make it to that prescription... at least with the companies that I have worked with. You can have your eye doctor give you a slightly adjusted distance prescription for the 1.3 meteres, and give that to the VR lens companies, and they will make it to that prescription. If you have an ADD power, and you put in your prescription, and the add power, then they may adjust it slightly for you.

    When discussing nears sightedness, I think it would’ve been more helpful to say far point of vision instead of saying that eyes are perfectly focused at… (in your example, 1.67 feet). That’s the far point of a myopic’s vision. They can also focus well at lesser distances. (I recognize that far point and focal point are the same value in myopia focal length calculations as the infinite object distance in the denominator causes that term to = 0.) Thanks for making me review some lens physics and learning about VR optics.

    • @DrEyeGuy
      @DrEyeGuy  5 місяців тому

      That is a good way of looking at it as well. Focusing at lesser distances would involve accommodation, and some people can accommodate better than others.

    I have progressive lenses and have had contacts, but it's monovision.
    Would that be an issue if I went back to contacts?
    I have looked for this info but everywhere I have seen it asked I see only answers from ppl who clearly have no idea what monovision means. Seems the thinking on Reddit is that it means you only have one eye. Well, I guess that would simplify the IPD question. LoL

    • @DrEyeGuy
      @DrEyeGuy  Рік тому +1

      Great question! I would be tricky to appreciate depth perception with monovision. But you still could do it... there are people that are monocular (one eye) and a lot of them can still play VR. Monovision you would just have one that is more blurry than the other one, and so it would be difficult for your eyes to perceive the depth.
