I feel palm rolling just makes my hands get irritated and burn, crocheting is redundant after I shower it's like I never crocheted, I will never try wax. I was going to make a trip 5 hours away, spend gas money and $150 to get a dread maintenance, but now I'm set on separating locks once in a while and letting them do the locking via ways you've listed! I do tend to massage my dreadlocks in circles while watching tv, it just feels good!
Love your rationale, or approach to the journey. You've definitely helped me not worry about my dreads growing weirdness, THANKS! I guess I'm in the process of going back and watching your videos to see if I can do anything better on my journey. Please keep up the good work,. Ya's helped me calm down and let the process just happen now for over a year. Always on point, thank you for being logical and awesome! Or future or any other worries along the way.
Thank you! 6 days old dreads. I was becoming so stressed about maintenance and having to palm roll my 64 individual dreadlocks every day. After watching this , I'm now enjoying my dreadlock journey again. You've reminded me what it's all about. Loving the maintenance while I sleep too! Now that's something I reckon I'll be good at 😉👌
I think the only comparison for a deep clean would be a deep condition, in the sense that non-dreadheads often prefer to have the whole soft, smooth, moisturised thing going on whereas dreadheads pretty much need the exact opposite which is facilitated by the bicarb. Not sure if that actually made sense or if it's just my brain because I brushed mine out over missing conditioner so much.
You know a couple of months ago I was complaining that I don't have any congos and you said relax they will come by time and you were right now I have about 10-12 congos some of 'em are just 2s but I have a really big one which contains 10 dreads and so I just wanted to say that as you said the best thing is to leave 'em alone to do their thing :)
Hmm I'm stuck, My freind was going to help me section my hair.. now on lockdown.Gutted. But now I have more time I've started to do myself!! Its going oookay.. but it's not going to look as good as I don't have eyes in the back of my head!! 🙄🙈😭 Not brushed my hair since 10th Jan.. Now started to do twist n rip with a bit of backcombeing the bottom half.. I need my freind!!!
Got my wife to learn the twist and rip method, thanks for your videos they are really helpful! After 2 days, loose tips start to show but I guess that's part of the process right? Anyways, I'm looking forward to growing this hair and see it mature. Thanks again for all your helpful tips!
Hello! I dreaded my hair last week. They're thin, open at the ends. Method used: twist and rip + crochet. I started realizing that they're becoming loose at the ends. I fear that they'll start undoing because i have really straight and thin hair. Am i being paranoid for nothing? Other than that, thanks a lot for your videos! - they have helped me decide on getting the dreads - extremely useful and informative :)
Marie Rose Jerade Young dreadlocks are going to loosen at the tips - even if they're started super tight right up to the ends... once you start washing them the running water will generally bring out the loose hairs at the ends. It's completely normal. Provided that the hair is not overly soft/conditioned then they shouldn't continue to unknot themselves - if you sort of picture it like 'normal' hair - if you don't brush or condition the hair then if the hair gets knotty it will generally not unknot itself - dreadlocks will work the same way - provided the hair isn't too conditioned (or brushed ^^) they should undo themselves. Just make sure that what you wash them with isn't too softening.
hey, i just wanted to let you know that i love all your videos and they are by far the most helpful dreadlock channel ive come across. Any tips for week old dreads?
I got my first dread shampoo about a week ago, and I noticed that after every wash it made my dreads feel dirtier than the normal (not dreadlock) shampoo I used before that, no matter how much time i spent rinsing. Did I just get a crappy shampoo or do all dread shampoos do that?
My dreads are 4 years old and are pretty mature except for some loose hair. What do you think about putting bands on the roots? What do you use to wash them?
There is no specific set in stone time for when you do your first deep clean, I suggest when your hair starts to feel unaffected when you wash it. It all really depends on how well you wash them . Hope that helps!
hey man great videos you really know what your doing and saved my dreads with you deep clean method. i got a question, what the best way to dread up mt roots? would backcombing be the best method for that?
+Drew M dreading roots? roots are loose by nature. just leave them be and they will sort themselves out. backcombing the roots will just damage them and possibly break
Hey, I recently started dreads after I've had them for about 5 years (I was planning on joining the military thank God I didn't) but I wanted to try the natural method I tried different methods to start them but they always came out when I washed them. My hair is really greasy if I don't wash them but if I wash my hair properly, the dreads come out. I've resorted to interlocking them as I have before just to keep them together so that when I wash them they don't come out. Is this alright?
Interlocking is a reasonably common method, mainly for people with afro-textured hair. The upside is that they can be tightened down to the root, the downside is that they generally need to be tightened as the root hair is otherwise too twisted to lock by itself and overtime all the interlocking can result in the roots thinning. If you have interlocked dreadlocks you can eventually get them to start knotting naturally again, but they have to be left for quite a while and the new, natural growth will usually have a different appearance vs the interlocked growth.
How do you take care of new growth. I just started dreadlocks and my hair is growing quickly and I don’t know what to do with the roots. Your hair looks pretty close at the roots, so I was wondering can you give me any advice. Thanks. By the way, your dreads look awesome!!!
My dreads are 2 wks old..I've been palm rolling but after watching your videos I don't think I'll bother. Lol. I was a bit concerned about the fluffy-ness and my roots not dreading but I think you said this will just happen on its own? I'm spending more time on my hair now than I ever did..I guess this is wrong. I'm thinking maybe a new approach of leaving them be..just separating them as my hair is soft and they try to Velcro together. Do you have any other advice for baby dreads please? X
hello i am a subsriber and my loccs are about onw and a half months old and everytime i wash them they seem to be conditioned and fall out and like u said in this video they will come lose and naturally want to lock up it seems as if im afraid they will not knot or that im not doing it right. any advice that u have not already given. i just want them to stay locked in, it seems like a lot of lose hair is present
Thanks for the quick response. I agree with what you said. However, I have been only washing my hair with water for almost 2 years now, and my scalp/hair has become used to it(I trained it much like you explained in your other video). I can feel my hair get clean in the shower and it has no smell after. I only take showers every 3 days or so depending on how much oils/ sweat I produce. I do not have greasy hair either it is light and healthy. That being said, do you think the deep clean would be needed? I know my hair/scalp will have to readjust to dreads and if just water doesn't work I will pick up a dread shampoo but for the time being I am trying to stay as natural as possible. The deep clean for me seems like a good I'n the middle compromise, if it is mostly for shampoo residue I might not need it though. A lot of people think it's crazy, but hot water can clean your hair, it just takes longer.
luke ericksen Things don't get brushed out of dreadlocks - without something to breakdown the dirt and oils, it's going to get built up. You can get your head to a point where it doesn't feel oily or dirty anymore - I've been several months washing with only water, and over 6 months not washing them at all - the hair won't feel like it's particularly greasy, because the scalp adapts, but the dreadlocks won't continue to develop at the rate that they would if you'd kept washing them with a soap, or a shampoo etc.
I really like the amount of info you have composed! I was wondering, if I don't use shampoo or conditioner in my hair, or dreads, just water. Would you still recommend the deep clean, since there isnt anything in them except my own naturally occurring oils?
luke ericksen I wouldn't recommend refraining from shampooing - washing with water alone does not remove the natural oils, and it does not clean the hair. The hair will become greasy and the locking process can significantly slow. Leaving the trapped oils can also become unpleasant.
So I’m 3 days in on my dreads should I be sleeping with my dreads out or have something covering them? Currently I have a shirt sleeve to kind of hold them together
question: hey lazy dreads I was wondering what your thoughts were on crochete dreads? my friend has had dreads for two years and he used a crochete hook for maintaining and his are fine ... but I would love to know your thoughts ,thanks
question, my dreads are nearly 9 months old and i deeped cleaned them for the first time a week ago and now they have loads and loads of loops, is there anyway to tame them so they don't look so crazy? thanks
I'm Irish and black my hair is curly got mine dreaded 13months ago still have like 19 that are still soft and not fully locked how long do I have left till the rest are locked?
I'm a white guy with naturally wavy hair and I had my hair dreaded back in october. I still have some loose hair but most of them have tightened up pretty nicely. I do however, have 3 or 4 dreads on the back of my head that split into 2 at the end like a fork. there's no way for me to try to dread it back into one as both sides have already completely dreaded. Why did this happen?
I've had my dreads for over two years and I'm still separating them really often. how long do you think it will take them before they mature past that point?
Hey lazy dreads will it make a difference on my dreads in the long run rather I used the back comb method or twist and rip?? What will be the difference in long term?or do both methods eventually look the same ?
Nadesha Alves Yes, extensions can be added on the same day... however I do not personally recommend extending new dreadlocks. Yes, they can be cut out later.
I need your help. im asking you because you got the best dreads and best tips..ive had my dreads for 9 months and all my dreads are on there way to being really tight locked. the problem is from the root to about 2 inches down and the middle are not locked what do I do? ive been keeping them corn roled and that's working slowly but surely do I keep them corn roled? I don't use the croshae needle I don't wanna use it.i Got all the dreadhead maintaince tolls...? what do I do ?
What's up lazy dread I have new dreads I used the back combing method first and they fell out of the knot then I switched to the twist and rip method same thing I surf probably about every other day is this bad to do with new dreads or is it something else?
Jeff Deutschmann Dreadlocks can fall out for many reasons - the hair may be too short for the chosen starting method - or too short for dreadlocks in general, the hair may be too soft / over conditioned, they may be washed with something that is too softening / conditioning, the chosen starting method may be poorly executed. Swimming in the ocean is good for dreadlocks. The salt water can make the hair rougher and easier to lock.
Liza Rome You'll start to notice it... when you stop noticing the dreadlocks ^^ When dreadlocks are young you can find that you're checking them out all the time and not really seeing much happen... eventually you'll start to forget about them a little and just treat it like hair - and it's at this point that suddenly you'll start being able to actually notice the changes.
love your dreads! how do you get the new hairs and short ones that come out at the scalp to dread? My lockologist said to section the dreads and sew them in once month. It is almost impossible for me to thread my hair through the big needle, looking in the mirror, especially in the back and underneath. I get cross eyed. :-P almost one month of dreads! I crochet hook once a week a little. I think that helps. :-)
how long before iv gotten my dreads should i go back for maintenence? there is alot of loose hairs from when they first did it. its been about 2 months..
ZongerCloud As maintenance is not a necessary requirement, I couldn't say how often you should have them maintained... ask 20 people and you'll get 20 different answers ^^
Hi, I've had my dreads for almost 8 weeks now, but I have a bit of a problem. I think I may have had bad sectioning or something because I have a flat side of my head. Not flat dreads exactly, but flat sides of just matted hair where no dreads are. I know it's not loose hair because I can't just grab it, it's all close to my head. I don't remember them being there but it's growing bigger and bigger. Is this normal or do I really have bad sectioning?
knuckle- headgamer I'm afraid I'm not quite sure I understand what's going on. The problem is within the sections you formed, or outside of the sections you formed? If you full section a head then every part should be within a section, and so even hair comes loose, it's loose from within a section , and so over time will be able to get locked in.
Lazy Dreads I think it may be within the sections? I mean, when I had them done all of my head was sectioned and dreaded up so I don't know what happened. I think this is happening from sleeping on them, but I can't really tell. It looks like it is flatness at the roots, but I can't tell where this hair is going as it's all a matted mess. It's kinda hard to describe. I usually sleep on the back of my head so I understand there being some flatness there, but I don't think this is normal. Is there some way I can show you? Upload a picture to here perhaps? Thanks for your help btw.
knuckle- headgamer When you start dreadlocks you section the hair up and then use a starting method to hold the hair within those sections together. These lumps of hair within each section need to be regularly washed, dried and separated for many months before mature dreadlocks will form within the sections. It is expected for the dreadlocks within the sections to become loose and messy while they're young... because... they are young and not yet mature dreadlocks. If the dreadlocks however become so loose that they fall out completely / loose all the sectioning pattern, then they will need to be restarted in order to retain the sectioning pattern.
I have about half of my hair dreaded and I don't want to dread anymore and I was wondering how I should proceed washing my hair. Can I condition the parts of my hair that aren't dreaded.? Would it affect the dreaded parts.?
sixthxxmonkey You can condition the parts that are not dreaded... and it would be recommended in order to stop it from knotting into the dreaded hair. You should not get any of this conditioner onto the knotted hair though.
***** Some people are going to have different experiences vs others. Often at the same time I'll be getting one person asking how to stop dreadlocks from knotting together and another person asking how to force them to knot together to create congo dreadlocks.
Hey! I'm just curious as to what you did when your roots began to grow out. I've heard that crocheting them is a good idea but what is your advice on it?
So when your roots grow out, do they just naturally dread? Also, I have a friend whose dreads have died at the ends due to lack of oxygen and I'm wondering what you can do to prevent this?
Yes, mature dreads are able to lock their roots as they grow. Dreadlocks New Growth - ua-cam.com/video/hRK2aOpbIi8/v-deo.html I'm afraid I don't know what is meant by dreadlocks dying due to lack of oxygen...
my dreads are 11 months old and have super loops near my scalp and they just look horribly wavy. will they go away in time? or is there something i can do? PLEASE HELP 😭
It's usually based on your hair type so you just have to appreciate it. You most likely have really good new growth and might need a sea salt spray if you want it to knot instead of being wavy
You can just let them be. :) Just seperate them after a shower. (Or more if you feel the need). I watched more vids from people with amazing dreadlocks who only separated them and never retwisted them. :)
***** If you force the roots 'tight', you're not going to be giving them the time and space they require to lock up there naturally and so they can end up needing to be tightened again and again and again as the hair grows... whereas if they'd have been left alone the whole time, they would have locked up at the root naturally and therefore never needed any tightening. Aside from it being more practical to allow them to actually lock up and mature at the roots... it also means they won't be getting potentially damaged by excessive maintenance over time.
THANKYOU Lazy Dreads your videos saved my dreads and taught me to maintain my dreads all on my own THANKYOU THANKYOU THAAAANNNNNNKKKKKYYYYYYOOOOOOUUUUU P.S did i say thanks
+Lazy Dreads so mine are about a year and some change old. I did leave the front portion of my hair straight. they locked up nicely but I don't do anything with my roots, should I do anything or can I just leave them alone?
Candy It can be useful for people who very much need to be able to hold hairs in a certain position for a certain occasion or event... however while hairs are being held, their ability to effectively form new knots is restricted and so I would not recommend it as an everyday fix.
I do once every 2 to three weeks. Keep in mind if you twist your roots it can undo all that you have done. It's always good to twist after a wash anyhow of you are going that route
Vuh'lür I don't have any personal experience with that product, but in general I will tend to recommend trying to avoid products that are designed to hold the hair in place.
How often would you say to wash? How to prevent molding? I've been forming natural dreads for over a year now, been growing for two years. Haven't touched a comb in over a year, but I worry about the back of my head, that's where everything started, and it's slowly wrapping around my head from both sides
hi.. how can i use coconut oil in my scalp without messing up the locking process?.. I'm Caucasian and have naturally wavy, oily long hair.. I'm almost on week 3.. thanks..
Hey Lazy Dreads I've been growing out my hair for about 3 years now and I decided to dread it. I sectioned out my hair with tiny rubber bands at the root. Will the rubber bands affect the growth of the dreads if I leave them in overtime?
You should search "Lazy Dreads Elastic Band Information" on UA-cam, he has a video on this subject. But the short of it is that you should not leave rubber bands in for a long time.
UCE AhME If you leave them in long term you can find that the hair directly under the band doesn't progress properly because the hair is too tightly held by the band - you can then get thin spots under the band. If the band rubs against other dreads it can damage them and cause weak spots. Loose hairs can knot over the bands meaning they can't be slid off anymore and will then require cutting to remove them. Cheaper quality bands have also been known to break down inside the dreadlock.
Depending on the type of bands you use. I have found they cause some breakage at the root and will only last as long as your oily scalp will allow. The oils tend to break down the elastic and they snap on their own. I prefer not using bands and just clock wise rubbing or twisting my roots now.
Ha! All these years of long hair and hated how messy my hair got after sleeping...now its a good thing. Sweet.

How does one get very thin dreadlocks?
Start with very thin sections and make sure to not allow the dreads to merge together.

I have a question, once I start them am I going to go and do the process for dreadlock again after some time, or is it once and done?
QUESTION: Is it easy to notice when dreads are starting to tighten up? Did you notice when yours began to tighten up?
Liza Rome You'll start to notice it... when you stop noticing the dreadlocks ^^ When dreadlocks are young you can find that you're checking them out all the time and not really seeing much happen... eventually you'll start to forget about them a little and just treat it like hair - and it's at this point that suddenly you'll start being able to actually notice the changes.
Super helpful
How long does it take for Dreadlocks to mature on long, smooth, thin hair?🤔
What to do about lint getting trapped in dreads? By wearing a wool hat, does that make it worse?
so bottom line, once you start the dreading process just wash them and leave them alone so they do their thing ?
Joey Rockzo That's what I do. It's not necessarily what every does.
I like your style sir ,,, starting mine in a week or so,, keep the videos coming they're great and super informative
Is it quicker for kids hair to lock up and mature than adults?🤔
did you section your hair first? In case you did, what size were the sections?
love your dreads! how do you get the new hairs and short ones that come out at the scalp to dread? My lockologist said to section the dreads and sew them in once month. It is almost impossible for me to thread my hair through the big needle, looking in the mirror, especially in the back and underneath. I get cross eyed. :-P almost one month of dreads! I crochet hook once a week a little. I think that helps. :-)
Liz Miller Over time loose hairs knot up and into their nearest dreadlock.
Lazy Dreads thanks! :-)
how long before iv gotten my dreads should i go back for maintenence? there is alot of loose hairs from when they first did it. its been about 2 months..
ZongerCloud As maintenance is not a necessary requirement, I couldn't say how often you should have them maintained... ask 20 people and you'll get 20 different answers ^^
okay thanks for reply!
If the dreadlocks however become so loose that they fall out completely / loose all the sectioning pattern, then they will need to be restarted in order to retain the sectioning pattern.
should i sleep with my hair open in the first weeks of my journey?
I dont know if they are locked up just now.
Did you get extensions? and if you did then can you make a video on them?:)
How do you dry your hair? And what do you recommend? I usually use the hair dryer but like you said I've noticed they are very frizzy after:p

Hi, how many strands of dreadlocks do you have on your head?
i've never had to seperate my dreads, not sure if it's because of he sectioning or if my loose hair is just too straight...
Sebastian Moran Personally, I wouldn't crochet my hair.

So when your roots grow out, do they just naturally dread?
Also, I have a friend whose dreads have died at the ends due to lack of oxygen and I'm wondering what you can do to prevent this?
Yes, mature dreads are able to lock their roots as they grow.

I'm afraid I don't know what is meant by dreadlocks dying due to lack of oxygen...
My maintenance is once in 4 months and wash it once a week with black organic natural soap.
my dreads are 11 months old and have super loops near my scalp and they just look horribly wavy. will they go away in time? or is there something i can do? PLEASE HELP 😭
It's usually based on your hair type so you just have to appreciate it. You most likely have really good new growth and might need a sea salt spray if you want it to knot instead of being wavy
So do you not sleep with your locks covered up, like in a scarf?
Does all this apply to new dreads or only mature dreads?
What essential oils do you use?
So you don't "retwist" your dreads? Mine are about 8mo old is retwist unnessisary?
You can just let them be. :) Just seperate them after a shower. (Or more if you feel the need).
I watched more vids from people with amazing dreadlocks who only separated them and never retwisted them. :)
how often should one wash there locks? should someone with young ones wash less or more?
jack goldie ua-cam.com/video/ZfgZjUFkTbE/v-deo.html
I got my dreads crocheted to start once when I got married but for the last 4 years nothing but now my tips real weak
how do i make my dreads lock together?
What do you think about the 'tighten roots' method for maintaining the roots?
Greetings!
Ok, thanks for the quick reply :)
Greetings from Bavaria
THANKYOU Lazy Dreads your videos saved my dreads and taught me to maintain my dreads all on my own THANKYOU THANKYOU THAAAANNNNNNKKKKKYYYYYYOOOOOOUUUUU
P.S did i say thanks
Benjamin Atkinson Always happy to be able to help!
+Lazy Dreads so mine are about a year and some change old. I did leave the front portion of my hair straight. they locked up nicely but I don't do anything with my roots, should I do anything or can I just leave them alone?
do you take off the knottysleeve when you're going to wash your dreads?
***** Yes.
what are your thoughts on aloe vera gel in dreads
Candy It can be useful for people who very much need to be able to hold hairs in a certain position for a certain occasion or event... however while hairs are being held, their ability to effectively form new knots is restricted and so I would not recommend it as an everyday fix.
can u tell me any where I can get dread lock shampoo
ND Sharks ua-cam.com/video/g35MhTn6pPo/v-deo.html
How often do you need to do the deep cleaning?
I do once every 2 to three weeks. Keep in mind if you twist your roots it can undo all that you have done. It's always good to twist after a wash anyhow of you are going that route
Do you suggest mango lime locking gel?
Vuh'lür I don't have any personal experience with that product, but in general I will tend to recommend trying to avoid products that are designed to hold the hair in place.
Cool intro
Do you roll your dreadlocks?
YES👍
Good bro, bless. Greetings from Spain
Loving the video's and information,
But eh, you're accent is so confusing, I'm hearing slight Scottish, Irish, west country English,??
How to prevent matting??
How often would you say to wash? How to prevent molding? I've been forming natural dreads for over a year now, been growing for two years. Haven't touched a comb in over a year, but I worry about the back of my head, that's where everything started, and it's slowly wrapping around my head from both sides
Im essentially ripping things apart when I can, I was wondering if you started with any hair ties or anything?
hi.. how can i use coconut oil in my scalp without messing up the locking process?.. I'm Caucasian and have naturally wavy, oily long hair.. I'm almost on week 3.. thanks..
Adira L I'm white and have had dreads for 1 year and 8 months...I've never used coconut oil....I think that's more for African hair.
seasalt and _____ oils?
Tarpeet0n essential oils.
Maintenance is sooo boring xD But we have to do it right? :P
this video is great :'D
only 90's kids will remember this intro
gorgeous!
I thought sleeping on Ur dreads was a bad thing???
what if I only have one dread? lol
:)
Youl cry so hard if someone shaved your head. Lol
Stfu
Your dreads looks like sticks hanging from your head, not a fan, sorry, but your videos are very informative.
That intro is way too long:)
