    The most expensive whisky I've seen in a bar recently was Macallan 25 for US$450 for a 60ml pour. I didn't order it - I had Austrian white wine instead. For this much money, I could buy multiple bottles of very good whisky. The only situation in which I would spend this much money for a single pour would be exactly the situation presented in this video, an opportunity to try something truly rare and special. I don't think Macallan 25 rises to that level; it may be expensive, but it isn't exactly rare. It's in demand because it is a luxury status symbol. It might even be good, but I'm not terribly impressed with the 12-year, so it won't be high on my priority list the next time I want to blow $450 on booze. Unless I encounter something truly exceptional, my limit for a single pour is around $100, and I don't do that very often.
    If I ever happen to visit Japan, I'll have to budget some money and visit this bar. This is the sort of place where it would be worth spending $500 on a single pour of exceptional booze, and I'm sure there will be more than one whisky that I want to try.

    What a great episode. All the nerves and emotions heightened made this vid extra interesting. So glad you tried it and that they didn't make it out of this world price (even though it's still very expensive). They didn't make it only the super rich's playground. Experiences like these are like highlights of a movie you actually remember. For some reason, great whiskies play with our minds. Like they touch specific 'taste memories' of our minds. Mostly pleasant ones our minds choose to store subconsciously until something wakes it. An example was an aged chardonnay that was so good and complex one of our friends referred a hint of nippa palm fruit. Incredible. Thank you.

    Mac, what a delightful video.
    I can see that you really enjoyed yourself.
    Just to put this into context. This 30 Year Old Hakushu at $500 for 25ml means that it's about $80 a sip and every tiny drop is about $10. That means that when the bartender forced those few last drops into your glass, he was giving you an extra $30-40 worth.
    I agree. It was worth it!
    As we say in Israel LeChayim! - TO LIFE!!!
    Keep well my friend and may you experience many more wonderful moments.

    • @KanpaiPlanet
      @KanpaiPlanet  Рік тому +2

      Hi Reb! It was truly fantastic.
      A shot in Japan is 30 ml, so yes, Kubota-san was making sure I for value by ensuring I got every last drop!
      TO LIFE indeed!

    • @RebMordechaiReviews
      @RebMordechaiReviews Рік тому +1

      @@KanpaiPlanet My mistake. I assumed he was using a standard size double sided (60/30 ml) Jigger measuring cup. It looked like at 8:47 that he only poured about 3/4 of the measure which I estimated to be about 25ml.
      If you say it was the full 30ml then I won't squabble over that $100 or so. (Ha Ha!)

    • @KanpaiPlanet
      @KanpaiPlanet  Рік тому +1

      I hope it was the full 30ml! 🤓

    • @RebMordechaiReviews
      @RebMordechaiReviews Рік тому +1

      @@KanpaiPlanet I don't mean to bore you but I think the bartender was justified in not filling it up to the 30 ml maximum. He would have ended up spilling $50 worth of whisky.
      It reminds me of the Mishna (Jewish Legal work) which defines the technical details of the commandment to drink a glass of wine to sanctify the Sabbath every Friday night and the commandment to drink 4 glasses of wine on the first night of the festival of Pesach.
      In order to fulfil the commandment we first need to know what the minimum acceptable volume of a glass of wine is. By calculating thumb units and the volume of the average cheek, the Rabbis came to a volume that roughly approximates to 86 cc.
      However, when it came to manufacturing the actual glasses, the Rabbis demanded that the minimum size be 90 cc. Why? Because if someone takes a glass of exactly the minimum required to fulfil the commandment and manages to spill even one drop, then he now has less than the minimum. Therefore the Rabbis demanded slightly more than the minimum to allow for spillage.
      Incidentally, based on this Mishna, the Tosfos on the Talmud (compiled during the Roman invasion of Israel, around 2,000 years ago), calculated the definition of a glass of Mashkeh (Distilled spirit) and came to a volume which approximates 29 CC.

    Amazing video & experience, Mac ! The oldest Hakushu I tried is the 25 yo official release, back to 2011 in a Belgian festival in which I was a B.A. for an Australian brand (thanks to Misako Udo !). In fact it was sampled & I tried it only back in Paris (I still have the empty sample with her writing, mind you). And the oldest Japanese whisky I tried is a 41 yo Karuizawa...But what strikes me here is the great cask choice (all Bourbon if I understood well) because I have the impression that first fill Sherry casks do not always serve at best the distillery's house style in my opinion & the abv, which is perfect for long time aged whiskies & other spirits (as often I believe that 43 % abv doesn't always serve enough the distillate, as it is often a complex blend of casks...). The notes you give show a perfect balance, richness & complexity I don't always find in all Hakushu's OB/IB releases I have to say (even if it is a distillery I like a lot), so I can only imagine this is a winner, well done, Mac ! 👍 Indeed, I love too the "forestness" of Hakushu, but I also have to say, that, several times on cam appeared a certain legendary "S" bottle I haven't tried yet, so yeah a place to visit for sure ! Thanks for sharing this precious memory with us, Mac ! 🙏
