  • Our new fire place sprung a leak. We started the five day process of seasoning our masonry heater and on day one we filled the room full of smoke. Building a house from the ground up has been a journey I hope you guys stick around to see what else we can get into.

Hey brother, You might want to build a nice wood rack for on the front porch. You can move it out for spring/summer time. That'll save you from having to get wood in bad weather. House is looking great, and TempCast is awesome! God Bless!

In my opinion you should put the shingles or clapboards on or what ever your going to use sooner than later, if not, whatever is exposed will not last as long as you’d like, from my experience that’s what I see, I’d hate to see it be more expensive in the long run for you, you have put a lot of effort in this project, and I’ve enjoyed your journey, never the less I appreciate your work and channel, 👍

I am a german oven builder with 32 years of experience. Half of the german population has masonary heaters in their houses. Watched your video on your build, you guys did a bunch of things wrong during the build ! The concrete pieces that you have used was the biggest mistake. You should use Stones called Schamott !! Also, after the build, you need to let it dry for about 2 weeks and then start slow with only a few logs ! You oven will work, but i can see that it is not very efficient ! When you light the ofen, i can see that your draft is terrible ! If i would of installed that oven for you, the draft would almost blow out your match . That the oven sprung a leak right after the build, says it all. Sorry, your oven is really a piece of junk !

I’d love to find out if he could adapt a second door to feed from the exterior? For a much cleaner wood burning experience!
I think it’s totally plausible but I need to go back and watch the build process! I am still building a 22x33 heavy timber frame carriage house with rigid 3” foam insulation strapped to the exterior for a full 8” frame exposed inside. I’m in it for under $75k . 100% diy, full basement and 2-3rds loft, 1800sqft. As a ex-union Mason (local#15) I’m planning a stone fireplace and to veneer my 12”cmu block walk out foundation. I heated it with a temp wood/coal the first winter but used a mini split I installed this winter. But ultimately want to use wood primarily.

There was a new home construction I used to drive past every weekday on my way to work in Northern Illinois, it had ZIP sheathing on and sat for 14 months without siding and didn't have any issues. This was in everything from -35F to over 100F and high winds. Pretty good stuff.

Out of experience all builders should be cautious about creating a situation to invite mold. Water is always a concern when building and plastic does hold the moisture out or even in...When I listened to you about putting plastic up on your house as winter would be approaching quickly I thought of my daughter's journey with Mold in her home. . Mold is an issue with 66% of American homes and that includes new builds. Insurance Companies will not cover Mold... Long Story of why ..... Mold can cause serious illness that can take a long time to get over so hope you all pay attention when building or adding onto your homes, Tending to water sources spills like overflowing toilets, washing machines, dishwashers, bad weather on new builds , etc... clean it up immediately and add a fan to make sure things get dried out.... My daughter house had mold issues not of their own fault. The previous owner put the exhaust from the dryer under their crawl space and that is where the issue came from in the first place... the whole house had to be remediated from the Attic to the crawl space , all of the flooring had to be removed as well as drywall and ceilings.... They had no idea because they even had a professional inspector come to give the house a clean bill of health before signing the purchase agreement. But to their disappointment my daughter d they found out that this killer mold was a major problem... When they got the mold tests back, they were immediately told to move out of their home ( 1 year ) and finally got the go ahead to move back. My daughter had to go to a Detox specialist in Indiana, she lives in Michigan and had over $5000 worth of tests to help them find the path she needed to go to recover plus another $150,00 to put the house back to where it should be for them to move back home. . So when I see plastic being used as a barrier I immediately think of what my daughter and her family went through ..Houses do need to breath or have a system where there is a air exchange regularly.. Not that a barrier is bad but just be sure you are not trapping moisture under that plastic... Hope all went well with that for you. Love your Video, well done. Looking into all sorts of Fireplaces.... I am liking what I see on your video but still doing some research on them. Thanks for taking the time to share your journey .

Our house has been ZIP for two years without any issues just waiting for siding prices to come down and such. You don't need the Tyvek and adding it might actually hurt because your are creating an area for water to become trapped. I'd take it off.

I had a outside wood burning boiler for our home. I wanted to keep the fire issue outside away from the house. It kept the mess out and I didn't have to haul the wood in and ashes out of the house. As I have said on many subjects and many times, there are many options to get an end results! I hope that your plan makes you able to meet your expectations.. My outdoors boiler was the way that we went and it made my wife very happy that it eliminated a lot of cleanup on her part. I am disabled and my sons were able to stoke the fire for us. The boiler was large enough that in the winter we were able to put large logs (12=14" and three foot long) in and we didn't need a wood splitter. Again I say to each his own pleasure. Good Luck and God Bless....

We have been burning wood in our home for 51 years. We for sure don’t know everything there is about the subject but 51 yrs experience has taught some lessons, some of them hard ones, over the years. To make kindle cutting get a wood splitting drill bit for your hand drill. We have a tip-up splitter for the large logs and a Ws drill bit to break it down into just the right size for your use. Check on line to find them. Cost less than $20. Saves all kinds of energy, both yours and gas for lg splitter. Additionally save your self from bending over to pick up split pieces by throwing them directly into your wagon. It’s fun now to do this chore but when it is cold and wet this winter the romance of cutting wood will quickly wear off and the endless need to heat your home translate into endless need to split and haul wood. Save your back, save fuel, save time.

Dutch, just figured out how much blown in fiberglass insulation you will need. 12" deep in the attic to get R39 insulating value. I couldnt remember the exact dimensions of your house. 2300 sqfeet would take 3060 lbs of fiberglass. I think you said you had about 1975sqfeet, so less than 2075lbs of fiberglass. Google it and plug in your dimensions of your house and it will tell you exactly house much you will need. Looked up how much insulation need in OK and they recommended an R39 which is about 12 inches in the attic blown in.

You don't live inside your stove... it's the outside or room exposed masonry temperature that heats your room air... 50 pounds twice a day (~7,000 BTU/lb x 100lbs/day = 700,000 BTU) is not very efficient unless you have a forest of timber to harvest. Good luck, report back after a month how much wood and mean outside temperatures.

Please be advised that the proper way to test moisture content of your wood is to bring a split inside and allow it to come to room temperature before resplitting said split and testing along the face of the fresh split..testing unsplit wood will give low readings and not give you a true reading as a fresh split reading will be higher..also beware of buying so called seasoned wood as 99% of the time it is not...hardwoods like oak and locust and hickory take a minimum of 2 years to reach the sub 20% moisture content mark...I have been watching your videos as I was intrigued by the masonry heater concept...how is it heating your home now that winter is in full swing?

The plastic should be put on the inside. If moisture gets into the wall, the heat from inside the house will push the moisture against the plastic and the moisture will stay with the plastic and start to mold. the plastic and the freezing point should not cross each other.

Just a quick tip for installing the house wrap (shown at 12:50) ... put a laser level up on something tall and stationary to be able to mark a perfectly horizontal line around the house, just slightly above where you want the house wrap to come up to. That way you can hang it straight, right from the starting point. (And having a second person also on a ladder helping pull it straight is pretty much imperative.)
Use the same trick later to quickly mark around the bottom of the walls for where you want to run the starter strip for your siding. This will save a lot of time and effort. If you get started crooked, impossible to correct it as you go along.

My laser level tip was for people looking to put up house wrap perfectly straight the first time, so can pretty much wrap the house straight with a single piece. An inexpensive laser level is indispensable for anyone putting on house wrap, exterior siding, etc, especially when it is going to be seen by others in a video that one is planning to post.

I noticed the glass on the door is pretty dirty. I thought the temp cast guy said it would stay clean? Very nice heater though 😎 I would like to get one in my house and get rid of my outdoor wood boiler. The wood boiler works well but it goes through the wood!

I like that johnny cash shirt. Nice fireplace, try adjusting the handle on the oven to help it seal. Look at the gasket and take note where it's not making perfect contact.

Get the girls to go get a barrel full of pine cones and keep them in the house they work really good as fire starters. Plus it adds a pine scent to the room. Since you'll be lighting so many fires you won't have to cut kindling wood.

Hi Gary, from uk, so didn't Pat say open the damper to get the fire started and get the flue hot, then close it, and this will make the flue gases go down and into the heated hearth.
Great videos are very informative and interesting, a good tip for cleaning the glass doors is to use the old fly Ash on a damp cloth when the doors are cool for bad stains and a clean damp cloth to finish off cleaning the doors only on the inside

As soon as I saw the smoke in both chambers I figured a damper wasn't opened. Glad you got it figured out and it's working well! You guys will definitely be staying toasty with that beautiful masonry heater!
