Building our Masonry Heater from Mud and Brick in a Traditional Eastern European Way

  • The past two weeks we have been working long days, building ourself a Masonry Heater. We called in a professional to help with the job. He has built numerous tile heaters, which incorporate a very similar technology of the inner works. Our Masonry heater is a little different though, I'd call it a hybrid between Masonry Heater and a Fireplace. Incorporating a large window for flame viewing. Lots of brick, for prolonged heat radiation. And a Masonry Chimney with five flue channels, similar to classic Finnish or Russian Masonry stoves.
For simplicity (reduced risks of failure) we did not incorporate a water heating coil. Innitial ideas of built in air channels we also disregarded. It will simply warm up and radiate heat to the room and the small chamber above. Using a standard ventilation channel in the ceiling, we will distribute the warm air through the house. With the ventilator installed separate, for easy maintenance.
Instead of plastering, or revealed brick or stone, we decided to glue drywall to the exterior. That should prevent cracks in the finish. We will plaster it nicely and Timi will be in charge of any decorative painting.
The chimney goes through the exterior wall, so we don't need to cut holes in our new roof. It's braced with a concrete anchored foot and will be braced on the wall. The length going up will be 5 meters, to ensure sufficient draft. Because a Masonry Heater should burn fast and hot to heat up the bricks. The 5 meters chimney pipe, stainless steel, will be braced with a steel post. Fingers crossed.
In a months time we will report on our first firing!
