Seems like we’re part of a small percentage of people who experience this issue. I bought my first hoka shoe ever, Bondi 8, in a 2E and had that experience with both a size 9 and 9.5. I was able to return it for some store credit and been doing research on the other models hoka sells. I’m SO GLAD I came across this video and feel some validation that I’m not the only one who had this experience. After seeing this video and reading some of the comments, looks like I will have to use the credit in clothing and accessories lol.
Sorry to here that. Did you try the suggestions in my video? The new Clifton 9 has been better in the ache. Also there some new shoes from other brands that have models very similar to Hoka's. The new Asics Nimbus 25 and the New Balance MORE or even the New Balance 840. Good luck!
Great video I was surprised to hear the exact problem I am having and will try the heel cushion.
Thank you!
Hope it helps. Thanks for watching.
Hey Jeff, thank u so much for the advice. It worked 👍
Awesome. Great to hear. Thanks for watching.
Had this problem for the 1st time ever with my new Hoka Bondi 8 right foot only...ugh....your trick worked...THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
did you put the heel cushioning on just the right foot? I fear it could lead to some type of weird compensation...I have the same exact problem, I'm developing a callus on the medial part of my right foot (Bondi 7)
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching. Run well, Live Well!
Good point. Unless there is a known leg length difference.
My first run today with them and my right foot hurt too.
I just got the bondi 8’s. They felt perfect trying them on and on my first run, but now it’s really digging into my flat feet. Otherwise I really like these are perfect for my hallux limitus. I’ll try this.
Instead i used folded paper towels and it helped! Thank you i know it’s not going to last long but I’m short on time and i cannot return shoes back to the store.
That's classic. I have found most heel pads or heel cups work or just don't. Worth a try though.
I tried pretty much all Hoka running shoes, and I had exactly the same issue with Clifton 8, even with wide version, especially for right foot. Same thing happened for Bondi 8 as well. Rincon 3 feels better. Surprisingly Mach 5 has zero issue so I ended up getting Mach 5. Still very comfortable, just a bit less cushioned compared with Clifton.
Yep. the Mach has a normal fitting arch. Hope they get on tot this and correct it in the future. Many Hoka's for the last 2-3 years have had this issue. Makes it hard to pull out for many customers. I pretty much won't sell it if there is any question to the fit of the arch.
Same issue couldn't run in my clifton 8's but got the mach 5 and had no arch issues.
Sounds like me. I tried Bondis but they were uncomfortable in the store already, and then I ordered a pair of Clifton 9. The left shoe feels perfectly well but the right one has that pokey feeling to it. Not sure what to do because I tried other brands as well, and the problem seems to be with all of them.
I have a torn plantar plate and my podiatrist recommended a Hoka metarocker shoe. I bought Bondi x, and Clifton edge because those types are known to have the rocker and be non flexible sole. I also bought the recovery slides and after wearing them all day I got blisters on my arches. I need a strong arch support for the plantar tear but the problem is I am flat footed and have sensitive skin but I need to heal the tear. I heard that overtime wearing high arch support can treat flat feet but it involves pain I guess.
When I bought my first pair of Hoka Clifton 8s / wide, I mentioned the arch feel to the shoe salesman. "Yeh, you're supposed to have an arch in your foot." Well, guess what. The purpose of this shoe was to wear in a shop environment, so I was looking for a soft sole. I decided to go with them ($140) and hope that maybe the arch would soften over time, or my foot would adapt. Nope! After one particular order of about a thousand pieces, the repetitive motion on my left arch left me hobbled for over a month. Still dealing with it. I had to switch off to an old pair of K-Swiss with no cushion, and no arch. I love the cushion of the Hoka, but hate the high sidewall arch.
Not sure where you got them. But if a customer of mine says they feel the arch in any shoe, I basically say no dice. They are should be comfortable in the shoe in the store at the time of purchase. There should be no thought of well. I hope it gets more comfortable. Or it should break again. Nope. Should feel good in the store.
good change insole
That seems to be like a lot of work for a shoe that, given how much it cost, should be comfortable to begin with... Im going back to brooks or ASICS
True they should feel good in the store, but sometime a customer will like everything else about the shoe except for that one thing so here's a remedy that hopefully works.
Same issue. No problem in my Brooks, ASICS. That Clifton 9 had a lot of promise. Even felt good in the store. Sometimes you need an hour in a pair of shoes to really understand how they’re going to feel. Walking, running, moving around at various angles. Anything you intend to do in them.
Which brooks??!
I get the same problem with my adi. The shoes is lightweight and my toe feels so comfortable, and although it's on the wider side as many buyers have to down 0.5, my arch is still hit by the side of shoe. I've tried to put some paper towels under the insole and it helps a bit... first time I've high side
Did you try adding an inexpensive heel pad underneath the insole that comes in the shoe?
The link for the spenco inserts no longer works and I tried searching for them as well and can't find them. I see you have 2 others listed. I'm not a fan of gel inserts. Do you have any advice for the replacement of the spenco or know where to get it? Thanks-I want to try it.
Yah the Spenco can be out of stock. That’s why I added the other options. If you put them underneath your insole they should be fine. You shouldn’t even know the difference which brand they are if you them underneath the insole.
Do they sell inserts to raise the front of the foot? So if my shoe has too high of a drop I can raise the front so it reduces the drop?
Separate issue but I do have the issue stated in the video I think with this shoe however I wonder about maybe tweaking another shoe that has a higher drop and that might work too .
I was a 4-5 mm drop .
Great question. Here is a cheap way to raise the front and lower the drop. And it's free if you got some extra insoles around from another running shoe. Cut those extra insoles just behind the ball of the foot. Cut them across so you have just the front part and place it under the insole of the new shoe, not on top....underneath. This should work IF and BIG IF it does NOT make your shoes toebox too tight. Let me know if that makes otherwise I will make a video for this. Thanks for watching. Run well, Live Well!
Did they solve the problem for the clifton 9? Version 5 felt like getting cut with a knife. It's not just the arch inside, it's the attachment of outermaterial on the midsole that creates an edge that points straight to your foot (it's a design flaw, it should curve outwards). Back then i cut material off on the outside, which greatly reduced but didn't fix the problem. Dumped them pretty early. Now i'm looking for cushioned shoes to complement my brooks hyperion tempo. SHould i get rincons?
The arch is much less intrusive on the Clifton 9. Funny i use to cut the side foam off with an Xancto knife back in the day.
@@runnergy thanks, good to know! maybe i give it a try.... worst case i send it back. I wrote hoka an email on the issue
I bought the bondi 200 CAD they refuse to exchange. Bad shoe and feet is now painful trouble something was torn. Slight stiffness n possibly swelling happening. Taking to youtube for reviewss to see if its me.
Where did you by them? What’s the date of purchase? Unfortunately the Bondi 8 is a fantastic shoe with a track record that reflects that. As long as the arch is comfortable. Where are you getting the pain?
At first my Hoka were great but something changed after a 3 day water fast . Now at times they are so uncomfortable . My knees hurt a bit especially right side
Sounds like a side effect of the water fast I can’t really offer anything here. Hope it has improved and thanks for watching.
Wear the Arahi series by Hoka it supports an lower arch foot
Thats not the issues for the ppl who have this problem. That midsole/arch area is just too narrow for the shape of our foot and it’s just digging into the arch.
Your 1000% correct. The base is too narrow and curved. I personally miss the older wider platform design. I would have to disagree on the Arahi recommendation as I have not had one customer with even close to flat feet including myself the Arahi has been one of the least comfortable models in Hoka's line up in the arch and actually has caused blisters. True it is classified as a stability shoe (dumbest title, should be called a medial support shoe) the arch is way too curved and intrusive. Now the just released Gaviota 5 is awesome and no arch issues so far.
It is so prominent on my right foot! I was wondering if that's how it was supposed to feel. Is it something that will continue to be a bother or is it more like if you push through it for a little bit, it ultimately is beneficial in the end?
I try my best not to sell someone a shoe if the arch is not comfortable. Odds are it will either blister, cause unwanted pressure on the lateral side of the foot by compensation or both and ultimately the being returned = not worth it. Means the shoe doesn't fit your foot. If you want a Hoka without the possibility of the arch cutting into your foot try the New Balance MORE it is basically a Hoka made by New Balance. I just posted a new video with the founder of Topo shoes hope you can check it out.
It's only on my right foot only too, my left feels really good! Any update on what you ended up doing?
Me too! It really bothers my right foot only ! I have no idea why :/
@@loudjietheodore161 i just ended up returning them for the clifton 9, its very comfortable more cushiony than the arahi 6. it has more arch support than normal running shoes.
Do you think that the wide version will solve this problem ?
I am not impressed with my Hoka shoes. That's why I'm here trying to improve their comfort
You could try an insole like Cur Ex or Superfeet.
I have tried the Arahi 7 in wide, Bondi 8 extra wide and Asics GEL-Kayano 30. All have given me blisters in my arch any suggestions?
Did you feel an arch when you tried them?
@@runnergy Yes. I ended up getting the on cloud cloudmosters and they fit great
Arch is too far to the rear. Can't imagine why they would try to relocate it? Very comfortable otherwise but I will probably have to punt.
Thanks for watching.
My first 2 pairs developed the problem as they aged, On my latest Bondi 8 it was noticeable from the start and getting worse. Spenco does not seem to make this product anymore, I cut off the heels to some old inserts and its helped a little. Like most shoe companies today they don't seem to really care and leave quality control to the public. Any ruff or protruding point in a foot bed of any shoe is just wrong. No more Hoka's for me.
What exactly was the problem with them?
Same problem i have with Bondi 8
That’s the model with the most arch issues. Shoe still is very popular despite the arch.
@@runnergy after a long period of walking, they started to loosen
It doesn't happens with all Hokas. I have Speedgoat 3 and 4 and Hoka Arahi 5 and didn't have this problem. I bought a pair of Hoka Clifton 5 and I encountered this problem
Exactly. You never know. Every shoe is different. Thanks for watching.
You need to buy a wide...that stopped the pain on me.
Glad that worked for you, but that has not worked for my customers not myself. That just made the shoe fit wider as that doesn't change the foam on the side wall of the shoe. But, heck if it worked for yah, awesome!!! Thanks for your feedback!!! And uploadinga new Hoka video as I am writing this. New trail shoe.
I have the wide but still have this issue.
I compared a wide in store vs the regular Iv has for two days on the Clifton 9. After literally 2 days it soften up a bit and actually wasn’t nearly as noticable than they store fresh Clifton 9 wide or the regular 9 at the store .
I felt mine were used when I got em, slight stink and hair inside. Also much more springy. The foam in store seemed stiffer for sure .
This confuse me since both the wide and regular were rubbing on the heel a bit whereas my regular fit was way better .
Same issue with the bondi.
I’m surprised at the difference , now I don’t even know whether it’s worth getting the wide . You could still feel the arch pressure but in slightly different places .
I wonder if the regular fit would break in better due to being pressed on more vs a wide version that may not be squished on the sides as much and thus stay stiffer and not break in fully .
It could probably get solved with laying a weight on the arch to soften and bend the foam a bit .
I still gotta figure out what to do since I wanna return the smelly used shoes I bought
Just boycott until hoka fixes this problem.
That’s funny. Doesn’t bother everyone.

The arch should be comfortable and not blister you. There should not be pain. Wearing a high arch shoe absolutely will NOT fix flat feet. Flat feet in itself is not a problem, trying to fix flat feet is.
@@runnergyGreat answer. Wish your store was near me. You’d have a new customer.
