I've been binging these all the way back to the 2007 one and I finally realized the issue with Yahtzee that he himself clearly learned years ago: he's always going to have a warped perspective because A) he resents games that he can't speed through in a weekend to get his review out and B) because unlike us, he HAS to play everything that comes out, he in turn will compare every game to every other game. How many Metroidvania games have YOU played lately? Because he seemed to have played every one that exists
But this means that if he recommends something it stands out as particularly good. Like, he grudgingly called Guacamelee "quite good" and for someone like me, who's only played like 3 Metroidvania games ever, it was awesome! Also he doesn't exclusively like short games - he liked Stardew Valley, and that's incredibly long.
He resents games that waste his time unnecessarily more than ones he can't just speed through. Need I remind you of his intense love of Dark Souls and his fondess for Persona?
2:24:22 Mario 64 is actually well aged from a gameplay perspective, I’ve never touched an N64 until recently and the only game for it was Mario 64- the graphics aside (3D didn’t look and doesn’t look good if it’s from the 90s or early 2000s) I liked it more than most modern games I’ve played. Mario controls really well and it’s a fun game overall, plenty to explore and it’s the best execution of “do what you want as a player” because most stars are available to you from the start if you know what you’re doing. I’m only 16 so the most I’ve seen out of the gaming industry is the tired old and boring tropes pushed by Ubisoft, EA, and Activision. The rare good titles nowadays come from Valve or some indie developers.
As a person who was a kid when mario 64 came out. It's still a fun game that pioneered the 3d platformer. But everyone needs to remember that every game since had added quality of life improvements. Also goldeneye is still fun to play, but oh dear God has that game aged horribly. Graphics aren't everything, but that game has enemies firing at u from behind fog and poor resolution
