Exactly. Sat in this one a while ago. The materials used in the front are almost all incredibly soft artificial or real leather, paired with soft touch plastics. You don't find that in a Passat.

It was something like 45 grand and still had its interior virtually excusively made out of plastic. The worst part was that it was actually Passat's interior.

Yeah, a few years ago I was still a VW fan. The diesel scandals however, along with the abrupt cancellation of Scirocco, the sudden removal of 1.4TSI engines and that sudden push towards overpriced crossovers with plastic interior made me lose all interest. My first car was a Golf, my last car was a Golf too even though it started burning oil a few years in, and now I don't think I'll ever look at their cars ever again.

Problem in The UK is fuel prices. I have the 180 PS diesel model and it is very lively indeed. We only get the naturally aspirated 2.5 petrol unit and it's completely spineless compared to the diesels.

@@neoanderson7 There are but they don't sell terribly well here. The diesels are very lively indeed I can assure you. I wouldn't have one if it was even remotely ponderous. It'll clear 30mph to 60mph in under four seconds. I see 48 - 50 mpg in normal usage, though we need to consider that a UK gallon is larger than a US gallon so the differences in fuel usage aren't quite a big as they might appear.

More comments on my Mazda 6 2022 German version, manual transmission. Skyactive G 165, stock audio (non-Bose).
So far I visited 2 dealers and they see no problem with the motor vibration, because there are no errors on the engine sensors. I am starting to think that this engine simply has this kind of vibrations, and people just accept it. But it is tragic in this kind of a car. Again, the vibration is like keeping the electric toothbrush, it is also there when parked and out of gear, so it is not due to tires. It is the worst around 2500 rpm.
Skyactive G 2.0l 165 does not have a balancer shaft, this might be one reason for more vibrations (and vibrations in i4 engines are very deeply studied over the years, so Mazda certainly knows everything about it). Ford Ecoboost 2.0l has balancer shaft, so maybe it is actually needed in a 2.0l petrol engine. To me sounds like cutting the corners by Mazda.
All the high compression of the Skyactiv turns out to be marketing only. At the typical rpm of 2000-4000 the Skyactive G 2.0l 165hp is really much weaker than Ford Ecoboost 1.5l 165hp. Also the fuel enonomy is worse than in Ecoboost. Actually it is similar when driving very slowly (which is a nonsense), but when pushing the difference is very clear. For example at a typically cruising speed of up to 140 km/h Ford was doing around 8.2l/100km and Skyactiv is doing around 8.6l/100km. The gap between the two engines gets larger when pushing harder. Both high compression naturally aspirated engines and turbo engines need to spray extra fuel to avoid knocking, and obviously this works better with smaller turbo engines than in high compression naturally aspirated Skyactive.
Skyactive is made in such a way that it has very little power on low rpm. What it does is that you can save some fuel unless you rev up. Related to this is switching between the Atkinson and Otto cycles. But this also means your car at low rpm behaves as if it was much smaller engine, so it is a nonsense, it is saving fuel by causing inconvenience. Proper fuel economy means that you do have the power if you need it, and in Skyactive you need to reduce by 2 gears to get to 6000 rpm to get the power, and it is a very short rpm range, very inconvenient. And at 6000 rpm Skyactive sucks fuel like crazy.
So, for now my conclusion is that Skyactive has no advantages over modern smaller turbo engines. It seems Skyactive is just a marketing trick to save on turbo, and unfortunately I got tricked. It was unfortunate that I trusted Mazda with this engine. Mazda is a big company that can make practically any engine. They can definitely make (and they do make) a turbocharged petrol engine, but adding turbo is just another component that costs money. They also for sure know about the poor performance of the Skyactive, but since their cars are getting decent reviews (as the one by whatcar here, "a new company car king" bla bla), they somehow get by with this. Obviously, Mazda 6 cannot compete with Mondeo (unfortunately not produced anymore), Superb, or Passat.
Another annoying thing in my Mazda 6 is the fuel indicator. The tank should be 62 liters. I refueled couple of times when the indicator was saying 20-30km left. My average is better than 8.4l/100km. I refueled 52 liters. This means there was 10l in the tank when the indicator was saying 20-30km left. So, it was actually around 120km left. Of course one should not empty the tank, but one the other hand this underestimates the range by 100 km!!! This means a lot more frequent refueling (in the engine that is already not up to date with the fuel economy, see above), means a lot of extra time wasted.

There are several advantages to a non turbo. In Australia where I live, that would include lower purchase price, service cost, fuel consumption and the big one, longer engine life. Mazdas here also have an excellent reputation for durability, good build quality for the money and long life. Something the German makes here never matched. The German cars look nice and drive well, but are not something you want to own.after five years as they start a decent into unreliability and high maintenance costs. They are considered great lease cars in Australia. Impress everyone at the office with the new Audi and offload it before it becomes a servicing nightmare. I will be the first to agree that the SkyActiv engines are not the most refined power plant, but they work and will continue to do so for high mileages with minimal service costs as will the transmission and the rest of the car. So if you just basically putt around Germany and never put the wear on the cars because you don't hold them long enough or drive them in harsh conditions to get the long term ownership issues of the various brands, but all means get the car that allows you to obsess over its mechanical refinement. It won't be a Mazda that makes you happy and the driving you do, won't bring forward its true strengths.

The 2018 update is pretty major for using the existing base. The dashboard and interior are a lot different. It just isn’t an all new car like the 3 is. Problem is that cars aren’t selling in this larger standard car sector as people are buying cross-overs. Less incentive to spend money on all new car design.

They’ve been promising it for years and years, keep delaying it, and then they stubbornly continue to stick with trying to bring it over here. At some point Mazda needs to swallow their pride and realize that diesel has no place outside of commercial vehicles and large trucks in America anymore. I wanted a diesel Mazda 6, but it’s just not going to happen in North America sadly. The writing is on the wall for diesels in passenger cars here.

Wow, noisy lethargic engines and a slow automatic gearbox. I didn't realise the Mazda 6 was that bad.

It is designed with economy in mind. And it still is objectively the best car in it's class overall.

Just purchased a 2.2 diesel manual. We really can't believe how quiet it is compared to relatives 2.0 vw and 220 Merc diesels. Not a BMW so that's a plus too.

The rear of the car has the typical Asian look, don't like that at all. The front and the side looks great.

@Carfreak's Brother You're obviously a Brit. For the rest of the world, we don't do manuals, 95% of all cars sold are automatics, so the auto is the only transmission to look at.
