- Paco Peña embodies both authenticity and innovation in flamenco. As guitarist, composer, dramatist, producer and artistic mentor he has transformed perceptions of this archetypal Spanish art form.
This Cubitt Session was created by Paco In collaboration with members of his company, dancer virtuoso Angel Muñoz, lovely Charo Espino on castanets, and Rafael Montilla with essential guitar support. The production of the film, working internationally, was managed by Pacos daughter and manager Elvira Peña.
Born in the Andalucian city of Córdoba, Paco Peña began learning guitar from his brother at the age of six and made his first professional appearance at the age of 12. In the late 1960s he left Spain for London, where his recitals of flamenco music captured the public imagination.
Venues for his solo performances have included the intimate Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and the monumental Royal Albert Hall in London, New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Concertgebouw, in Amsterdam. He has shared the stage with fellow guitarists, singers and instrumental groups, bridging diverse musical genres, including classical, jazz, blues, country and Latin American.
In 1995 The New York Times declared that: “Mr Peña is a virtuoso, capable of dazzling an audience beyond the frets of mortal man. He combines rapid-fire flourishes with a colourist’s sense of shading; this listener cannot recall hearing any guitarist with a more assured mastery of his instrument.” It should come as no surprise that readers of America’s Guitar magazine judged Paco Peña as best flamenco guitarist of the year for five consecutive years.
Today flamenco continues to excite a growing international audience, many of whom know little of its complex traditions yet who can identify with emotions that are so deeply rooted in the culture: pride of spirit, the vitality of passion and a lust for life, all of which are truly universal.
For Cubitt Sessions Digital, Paco brings to life the intoxicating rhythms, colours and sounds of Andalucía, as one of the greatest living flamenco artists. In collaboration with members of his company working remotely because of covid, creating a digital yet classical form of flamenco concert with bursts of glorious improvisation and virtuoso flamenco technique.

I'm listening to the music of Mister Pena from being about 18 years old to now, 45 years old, so most of my life. And I can honestly say that Paco Pena has contributed in making my life more beautiful. Through good and through bad times, his music always was a save haven. Thank you Paco Pena.

The recording sound is incredible. Never heart this quality level. Pieces are of course amazing, player levels are of course top level, instruments are I am sure best ones of the world. BUT the thing is that they are nothing without a this sound quality. AMAZING..

Me acuerdo de ustedes maestro yo coji una classe de guitarra en paris en un passaje en frente del ciné el rex abandonné el flamenco porque el solfegio no me gustaba hoy me arrepiento porque el flamenco es mi passion me pone los pelliscos en los brazzos cuado escutcho una buena guitarra y un buen canté como rancapino chico camaron luis de córdoba etc me han criados mis abuelos malaguéños … 29:56 etchos muchisimmos de meno y que agradesco porque gracias a ellos desde mi anfrancia estubes criados escutchando fandango bullerias y me dejaron esta cultura, passion y el amor que tengo por este Arte tan bonito que es el flamenco y mi secundo patria que quiero tantissima mi Andalousia gracias a dios ay artistas como ustedes para que siga perdurando este Arte tan préciosso que yo piensso que nunca se perdera el flamenco pienso yo que es là musica là mas expressiva viene de l’Alma con Todos sus forma de expressiones el Baile el cante las palmas Bueno podria hablar horas y horas como gran aficionado de estes Arte os déseos que siga ustedes tocando mutchos años mas saludos el fandangos con sus alumnos es précioso la buleria tambien y la faruca con el baillaor estupenda Abrazo Fédérico

Hola Paco. Te acuerdas de la calle candelaria? ( vaya tonteria de pregunta..¡¡) Soy el hijo menor de Manolo, el de la tienda de comestibles. Cuando enseñabas a Agustín, yo escuchaba detrás de la puerta y conseguí aprender algunas facetas de soleares...Aprendi eso y aprendí a valorarte como persona con esa ENORME VOCACIÓN. Gracias . Muchas gracias. Mi hermano también aprendió a disfrutar con la guitarra ( DE M. REYES) que aun conserva. Un abrazo.

Much better than Paco De Lucia .I don't know why some people put Lucia at the top (maybe he looks more romantic ! ?) of flamenco guitarists .His style is a mixture between Jazz and Flamenco .That means he isn't a puro flamenco guitarist like Sabicas,Pena ,Juan Serrano ..because he didn't keep tempo and falseta in Flamenco .Even great Segovia once said "Lucia just has agile fingers ,not flamenco guitarist nor musician !"
