It is said that playing is one of the most effective way to learn a language. What better way than but to play a game where you are a Language Guardian tasked with saving the world's endangered languages.
Courtesy of Language Card Games, I play a language card game in Afrikaans with my resident South African, Phil. The game involves us creating sentences and thinking about vocabulary in relation to the instructions on the card. Who knew such fun AND learning could result from such a simple concept. Check it out!

Afrikaans is familiar to a Dutch speaker and so unbelievably close to Dutch, it's weird that they've been separated. Funny thing about Afrikaans is that about half of Dutch dialects are more divergent from standard Dutch than Afrikaans is.

That's exactly how Afrikaans speakers see Dutch: drunken Afrikaans! :-D

@@anonza7733 🤔to me, Dutch sounds like a demonic message, in Afrikaans, on a vinyl record, being played backwards.

Dutch sounds for us like drunk Afrikaans that's why we always laugh or think Dutch people are "vrolik"

Thanks for making this wonderful video, Michael and Phil! Glad you enjoyed it and wish I could have been there to join in the fray and yell out rooibos for the plants card. That's one of my favorite teas and it's native to SA, I believe. Lekker! --Matt

Wow, these would have been great for the conversation hours that my school held in college! It would have taken away the awkwardness of trying to find a topic to talk about and this game is specifically for studying languages. Very cool!

I like the idea of playing the game with different languages. Lol. Ive always wanted to play multilingual Scrabble but using latin alphabet tiles limits the languages too much. #poshlanguageproblems
