That blog post of resources is incredibly detailed! Thank you so much! I am learning French now but just decided an hour ago I want to learn Afrikaans after watching a UA-cam video about the ease of learning it for English speakers. Your video has me excited and hopeful, and your blog post has made this a real possibility! Glad I came across your video!
From someone who's mother tongue is Afrikaans, you did a great job! WOW! I always knew Afrikaans was easy to learn 😊 Fun Tip: Watch the movie Liefling. It is an Afrikaans musical with English subtitles and your accent is really great for someone from Canada! But you'll love the movie Liefling.
Ahh, I love this so much. I'm very sad to hear that there aren't very precise and comprehensive guides for learning Afrikaans out there - I think perhaps foreigners learning our language sounds a bit foreign to us (haha) so it's not a main focus over here. Perhaps I'll look into it? Regarding the music, Die Heuwels Fantasties is a great band, and along those lines I think are Ddisselblom, Karen Zoid, Jan Blohm, Dans Dans Lisa and Die Melktert Kommissie. They're all somewhat alternative over here (I think, my knowledge of our music is a little lacking, I favor overseas artists) In the pop genre I'd suggest Bok Van Blerk, Elvis Blue, Dewald Wasserfall or Leah, but not much else that I can think of since our pop songs are cheesy AF. Hope it helps!
Well done! I'm so proud of you! Vir die musiek sal ek Riaan Benade, Jo Black, Elandré, Bernice West, Bok van Blerk, Spoegwolf, Brendan Peyper en Kurt Darren voorstel. Ek hoop jy geniet dit! (Jy kan ook op my channel na my Afrikaans playlist gaan kyk as jy nog soek)

It's quite fascinating that I could somewhat understand small parts of what you said, despite having no knowlegde of either Afrikaans or Dutch. Admittedly beeing a native speaker of German might helped with that... but still!

Many times, in South Africa anyway, if someone tries to speak Afrikaans, the Afrikaners would immediately hear that the person isn't Afrikaans speaking, thus switching to English. The person would thus not speak much Afrikaans.

Regarding Afrikaans music, there's also some good Afrikaans instrumental music. Can do UA-cam searches e.g. for keywords like Boeremusiek, Konsertina and Wals. There's also Vyfster by Lloyd Ross.
I laughed so hard because in 18 years of my life,I've never used the word beneficiary in Afrikaans ,and I live in South Africa and actively speak Afrikaans. The answer is never, you aren't gonna use it.😂😂😂

Jy doen regtig goed! As jy jou kykers (viewers) wil groet (say goodbye) in Afrikaans kan jy TOTSIENS sê. Dit beteken, tot ek julle weer sien (till I see you again). Ek het die video baie geniet!
I learn Dutch and I think I understand your Afrikaans better than I have ever understood any Dutch from hearing. :D Maybe you're using simplier constructions and vocabulary as you're not a native speaker.
Hallo! Jou Afrikaans is baie goed :) Ek leer Afrikaans ook. My Man is van die Kaap. Dis 'n baie pret taal. Ek sukkel met die sinstruktuur. Dis so lekker om 'n ander leerling te sien :)
This is great, kudos to you!!! There are a lot of South Africans who cannot speak Die Taal! Have you heard 'Die Antwoord'? Cray cray Afrikaans band, but internationally recognised.
You can also listen to Juan Boucher. He makes beautiful music. Also-Van Coke Kartell. You are very inspiring! Im trying to learn German through Duolingo. Slowly but surely.
So, you're saying that this person is faking it? That he is not really a 'true' Canadian, but in fact a South African (or an ex - South African, or a born Canadian with Afrikaans or South African family or language background)?? Is that what you're saying?... And what would that be based on?
You say you could not find any other book in English to learn Afrikaans from and that "Teach yourself Afrikaans" is not ideal. By far the best book for learning Afrikaans from is "Colloquial Afrikaans" by Bruce Donaldson and it is readily available. It is published by Routledge. Audio of all the dialogues is now available for free on the web.
I know this is old, but man, you speak better afrikaans than a lot of kids in high school, because we use a lot more english and use english words more than certian Afrikaans words, so you sound like a proper Old Time Afrikaans speaker, with a lost accent. Well done
Baie mooi, as jy weer hier kom gooi ons n braai! I have to admit, as a native speaker, I really let my Afrikaans slip in favor for English. In KZN one predominantly work in a English or isiZulu environment. As a result I struggle too speak Afrikaans without slang or mixing English words. Even spelling is a challenge now. Your video inspired me to try and improve my speaking without mixing in other words from English. Does other languages also have this problem with mixing? I know in my social circle it's a major problem.
I always mix Tshivenda with English sometime - it is a rainbow nation challenge. (sorry for my bad afrikaans)
Hey Michael! Jou Afrikaans klink goed, mater! ☺
I grew up in Rhodesia and was aware of Afrikaans, lived in the UK since a teenager but am a German speaker! so with some difficulty can understand the language! I would like to take it further.
You were asking about examples of good Afrikaans songs. I'm not sure which of these artists' songs are e.g. on UA-cam. Here are examples of good artists, and good examples of their songs: Laurika Rauch - Kinders van die wind, Die Nostalgie. Carike Keuzenkamp - Batholomeas Dias, Hoeka Toeka, Kaalvoet in die reen, Daar's 'n land. Lance James - Dankie, 50 goue jare. David Kramer - Stoksielalleen, Hak hom Blokkies. Leon Schuster - Ek is baie lief vir mammie, Hier kommie bokke, Rugby onthaal, Eish. Ge Korsten - Liefling, Sing seeman sing, Ek kyk graag so diep in jou oe, Algoabaai. Sonja Heroldt - Ek verlang na jou, Oberammergau, Waterblommetjies Boet Pretorius Sangers - Lied van die wind Randall & Koba - Duitswes Wals (Die rooi rok) Anton Goosen - Ta' Mossie Se Sakkie Sakkie Boeredans, Die Kaap is weer Hollands Bles Bridges - Reik na die sterre Bok van Blerk - De la Rey, Afrikanerhart, Kaplyn Juanita Du Plessis - Boerejol Trevor Masser - Kinders van die wind Steve Hofmeyer - In die RSA, Pampoen Sunette Bridges - Genoeg Jezelle - Suidwes, Vir ons mense The first six also have good English songs. The next, Ge Korsten, also has good English and German songs. There's also some good Afrikaans instrumental music.
This is actually pretty good. I grew up bilingually (Dutch as the other language) and it is similar enough to Afrikaans to understand. Spreek je heel (baaie in Afrikaans) goed
I am obsessed with biltong! I can get some from a South African butcher here in Canada, but it's just not the same. Both times I went to SA, I'm pretty sure I ate my body weight in biltong. I also really like braaivleis, Sparletta cream soda and Savanna Dry :D

Baie mooi boetman! You should check out some of the old Afrikaans movies and TV Shows that were on SABC back in the day. " Vyfster "
Teach yourself is the book I also use to learn Afrikaans. Colloquial Afrikaans is another good book to learn.
The answer is never, you aren't gonna use it.😂😂😂
My American husband did Afrikaans lessons in my small town when we spent time back home once. He learned "besproeiingskema" in one of his lessons. Didn't know how to say komkommer, but you know, priorities.
oh, so very helpful! :) Thank you - so much good information is this video. :)
@the polyglot files DUDE!!!! Dit is my moeder taal en as jy ooit hulp soek met enige iets laat weet my! I have to say your accent is weird but I love it!
Keep up the good work! Hoop jy kom kuier weer en laat weet my dan gaan drink ons n bier!
Dude, hierdie video is meer as 6 jaar oud! Dankie! Jy is welkom by my braai hier in die Boland! For the Britannica, The Cape Wine Lands.
Baie dankie! Miskien moet ek 'n nuwe video maak 😅
Very well done boetie! Afrikaans music: pop and love songs: Kurt Darren, Nicolas Lowe, Bobby van Jaarsveld. Rap: Jack Parrow any many more. Rock and mix: fokof polisiekar, Francois van coke, Karen Zoid. There are too many to name.
Enjoy 😊
Jy doen regtig goed! As jy jou kykers (viewers) wil groet (say goodbye) in Afrikaans kan jy TOTSIENS sê. Dit beteken, tot ek julle weer sien (till I see you again). Ek het die video baie geniet!
I learn Dutch and I think I understand your Afrikaans better than I have ever understood any Dutch from hearing. :D Maybe you're using simplier constructions and vocabulary as you're not a native speaker.
After thinking about it I think that speaking slower also makes a difference.
Hallo! Jou Afrikaans is baie goed :) Ek leer Afrikaans ook. My Man is van die Kaap. Dis 'n baie pret taal. Ek sukkel met die sinstruktuur. Dis so lekker om 'n ander leerling te sien :)
I live in the North West. I like your accent ignore the haters.
It's an afrikaans dude putting on a Canadian accent in the beginning
foreign warren that's what I thought
So, you're saying that this person is faking it? That he is not really a 'true' Canadian, but in fact a South African
(or an ex - South African, or a born Canadian with Afrikaans or South African family or language background)??
Is that what you're saying?... And what would that be based on?
Ek is Afrikaans myself baie goeie werk!
So bly jy hou van ons mooi taal. Jy praat baie goed. Hou so aan! Groete vanuit ons Moederstad, Kaapstad.
I live in BC canada...and im born in south-africa i recently moved here...if you want i can teach you some
I can help with that accent
If I can recommend my favourite Afrikaans song.. Its called: Kinders van die wind by Koos du Plessis. Dis 'n baie diep liedjie.
Jou Afrikaans is regtig goed. Jy praat beter Afrikaans as meeste Engelse mense wat in Suid-Afrika woon. Sterkte voorentoe x
I grew up in Rhodesia and was aware of Afrikaans, lived in the UK since a teenager but am a German speaker! so with some difficulty can understand the language! I would like to take it further.

Dis verskriklik oulik! Jy doen SO goed en praat baie mooi Afrikaans. Tien uit tien! Dis geheelenal op jou vlak!!! :)
You were asking about examples of good Afrikaans songs. I'm not sure which of these artists' songs are e.g. on UA-cam. Here are examples of good artists, and good examples of their songs:
Laurika Rauch - Kinders van die wind, Die Nostalgie.
Carike Keuzenkamp - Batholomeas Dias, Hoeka Toeka, Kaalvoet in die reen, Daar's 'n land.
Lance James - Dankie, 50 goue jare.
David Kramer - Stoksielalleen, Hak hom Blokkies.
Leon Schuster - Ek is baie lief vir mammie, Hier kommie bokke, Rugby onthaal, Eish.
Ge Korsten - Liefling, Sing seeman sing, Ek kyk graag so diep in jou oe, Algoabaai.
Sonja Heroldt - Ek verlang na jou, Oberammergau, Waterblommetjies
Boet Pretorius Sangers - Lied van die wind
Randall & Koba - Duitswes Wals (Die rooi rok)
Anton Goosen - Ta' Mossie Se Sakkie Sakkie Boeredans, Die Kaap is weer Hollands
Bles Bridges - Reik na die sterre
Bok van Blerk - De la Rey, Afrikanerhart, Kaplyn
Juanita Du Plessis - Boerejol
Trevor Masser - Kinders van die wind
Steve Hofmeyer - In die RSA, Pampoen
Sunette Bridges - Genoeg
Jezelle - Suidwes, Vir ons mense
The first six also have good English songs. The next, Ge Korsten, also has good English and German songs.
There's also some good Afrikaans instrumental music.
So goed gedoen. Jou aksent is pragtig. Ek is mal daaroor.
3 years late but try die Melktert komissie. They use Afrikaans so well in their music.
i recommend you Juanita Du Plesis and Steve Hofmeyer, two pretty famous singers here ;).
Spoegwolf is one of my favorite afrikaans bands.
This is actually pretty good. I grew up bilingually (Dutch as the other language) and it is similar enough to Afrikaans to understand. Spreek je heel (baaie in Afrikaans) goed
ek is ook Afrikaans maar jy praat so vinning!Bake geluk!Jy is So goed !
It will help you learn Afrikaans if you invest in some recipe books and cook with them. i think you doing a great job.
Jy is taamlik goed met jou Afrikaans!!😃👍
Micheal, what is your favorite south African food or snack?
I am obsessed with biltong! I can get some from a South African butcher here in Canada, but it's just not the same. Both times I went to SA, I'm pretty sure I ate my body weight in biltong. I also really like braaivleis, Sparletta cream soda and Savanna Dry :D
The Polyglot Files try amarula tequila
eish i dont know mabe branna wyn
