- 🚩 Career in UN: From Failing in UPSC to now working in the UN? How did I get my UN JOB in New York
5 years ago, I missed the UPSC final list by 8 marks. My score in optionals was amongst the highest in India, my interview score was second highest.
A few years later, I’m in Istanbul - discussing with one of India’s entry level diplomats, whether it makes sense for him to leave services and do an MBA.
1. India changed : We aren’t a 20th century economy anymore. With the advent of liberalization - state control of power shifted from Civil Servants to specialized professionals.
Current JS of Civil Aviation is an MBA from IIM A and was a partner at KPMG. There are 100 others like him who are laterally hired and contributing immensely through their work
2. Working for Society : If Sunder Pichai had cleared IAS- he would be working as a collector in Noida. Impact he has created is insurmountable to one he could possibly create while being in services
It is extremely critical that exceptional people join IAS, but for those who couldn't should know that entry through an exam isn’t the only route in 21st Century India to make a difference.
Many youngsters preparing for IAS in India quit their jobs, take multiple years of sabbatical, and thoroughly screw up their 20s - in anxiety and depression with a hope of getting into civil services (that has a yearly cycle, less than .5% success rate, and an archaic curriculum).
There is no better way to screw up your life than prepare for government exams in India (without any backup plan).
From a career in the United Nations to social impact, to getting laterally hired - you can do a million things to create a large-scale impact.
Do write to me, if you are crumbling under pressure because of a few bad decisions you made in your 20s. . Life is definitely more than an exam that the British created to recruit loyal servants.

Thankyou, for this amazing informative podcast ✨️
Hi Naman sir ,Thanks for such a wonderful podcast ,i feel really lucky to have found this , i come from a very remote area in Bihar ,where it is said that most of the UPSC aspirants come from ,i believe one of the reason is that we are not aware of other career opportunities where one can earn respect ,though things are changing but for only very few .Most of us come from lower middle class background but we have very big dreams ,but all we can do is hard work & many of us do not get proper guidance while choosing our career path .
I myself have studied Chinese Language from JNU for 5 years ,have a master's degree but i feel it's just on paper,it's all i have ,but I do not have any practical knowledge of it .I worked in corporate sector but i was not satisfied there .Now i feel lost as I do not know what skills should I learn to make a space for myself in this competitive world .As a kid I wanted to work for the development of society around me or at a larger level but i had no idea how i can do that .Now all i wish is to get some right guidance in my late 20s.Kindly guide if possible .
I'm glad I found this video and channel. You were absolutely right that no other video will be found like this video. 🙏Thank you so much Naman Sir thank you is a very small word but still thank you from the heart.❤😊
Wow! I got goosebumps after watching this episode, Naman.👏🏼 Though I'm 35+ and the ship has sailed for me, I love how you're making the college-going students aware of the professional choices they have rather than getting stuck in a handful of career cycles.
Hi! Do share your name. You are very kind, and thank you so much for your kind words across all videos. All the best!
@@namanshrivastava I'm Anurag.
@@madeeasyfinance why would you say the ship has sailed? I'm 37 and I pivoted in my career at 36 a year ago. I think it's a typical Indian stigma where we associate everything with age. You're yet to experience so many facets of life man.

Such a wholesome episode. Thanks for inspiring 😁!!

Hi Naman, thanks for such an informative podcast. I'm a bit late, but I'd still be very fortunate to find this channel.
I'm a Pakistani-born individual living in Cambridge, UK, and a student of politics at the age of 39. My aspiration is also like Priyanka's to be a tiny part of Development, Diplomacy, or Advocacy in civil service in the UK or become a part of the UN development program to help indigenous communities around the world. I feel more confident that I can resonate with people like you both.
Best of Luck Mate! Keep doing the great work. 😎

I am also a UPSC aspirant and going to give my first attempt in 2023, I’ve heard lot about how hard this exam is but having that perception shouldn’t stop anyone to start this journey. It’s my 6 month of preparation and I’ve learned so much that now I wouldn’t settle anything less than joining IFS.
When I first read the title, first think that came to my mind was that why so much proud of joining most useless org in the world write now, nobody take it seriously including USA(ex:chemical bombs by us in Vietnam and no action was taken against it), then how would other countries like Russia, china will take it seriously. Only good thing UN has that is big hall where every country has a seat to speak and blame each other. I am able to say only bcoz I’ve learned about them while for a common man UN is like world court where you get justice.
Anyway, this channel has lot of valuable content and thanks for uploading it.😊
Well UN is not as useless as you are

You asked one question regarding the financial aspect that not everyone can't afford institutes like Columbia but in the conversation it got left behind. May I know how to avail such institutes through scholarships or other means. Please answer that question.
Hi Arushi,
GGI-Fletcher Scholars are given a guaranteed $20,000 scholarship (minimum) - if/when they are shortlisted to study at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
We are in talks with Tuck, Wharton, and CEIBS to build similar collaborations.
Having said this - here are a few other scholarships that you can consider: 1. KC Mahindra 2. World Bank Scholarship 3. Rhodes 4. TATA
In the last few days, I have seen many comments - where many of you enquired about the "Salaries" in the Indian Foreign Services.
Here's my response to that question :
All civil servants who come through the UPSC exam start at the same level of salary - level 10 ie. the starting basic salary ie. ₹ 56100. For the next three promotions (levels 11, 12 & 13), IFS and IAS get 2 extra increments (6%).
However, when posted abroad IFS officers get Foreign Allowance (FA) in lieu of Dearness Allowance (DA) which other home-based civil servants get. But the important point to note is that the FA is considerably larger than the DA.
While DA is not dependent on the place of posting, FA is country-specific. This means that the FA of an IFS officer may actually decrease when she/he is posted to Islamabad vs. Belgrade Vs. New York City is at the same rank.
On a totally related note -
1. I will respond to all your concerns/questions/doubts on UA-cam itself. I'm loving the UI/UX of the platform - so please do not hesitate to comment with your doubts on any of my posted videos. I will respond to ALL comments.
2. This is an extremely important video on analyzing careers in the Multilateral Organization. I'm fairly certain, you all will gain immense value from the video - so please watch the entire video in one go. And do let me know your thoughts as well.

Which bachelor's degree I should do to get into UN as i am now 12th passout
MBA colleges and pvt companies care about your school marks and undergrad degree.. there's nothing wrong with that. Both these things have been in your control and it was upto you to do well in them. What is not in our control is the caste we're born in. And this exam cares A LOT about that.
Hi Aditi, you are correct about various aspects. I do sit on the board of one of the schools in the US. Allow me to assure you that MBA schools do NOT care about your marks in schools. They do are about how competitive your undergrad program is (could be solved for via various standardized test scores).

A person with BA degree can have a future in this field with no background??
Bhai , is this podcast available on spotify ?
I will be made available in 8 days.
Hii Naman...
I'm in graduation final year and wants to appear in pre 2023 ...but my optional is not prepared..so I want your advice whether I try for 2023 or go for 2024 ?
If you are dicey, don't waste your attempt.
But still she got into Columbian University by giving GRE, TOEFL and all, people are there who are brightest but as they born into poor family can't get into Colombia University. In India there is no opportunity unless u r from reservation category or from a rich family or ur fathere/mother is govt. servant.
Thank u Naman for this wonderful podcast. Was waiting for a podcast on this particular topic for many months.
Gained extremely valuable insights regarding how to land into a role at a Multilateral institution like UN, WB, WEF etc. during my UPSC prep hiatus.
Hope to interact with you in person one day during my GGI Impact fellowship journey.
Cheers✌️🙏
Absolutely Manjunatha! Look forward to it as well. All the very best!
eye opening conversation sir! i graduated from IIT roorkee in 2021 and have been preparing for civil services ever since. listening to some sane advices, i feel adversed to make state services as plan B [also defense services is out of option due to age :( ]. the public policy path seems a very apt alternative to me.
though , i had a few doubts wrt this, which i hope you could briefly touch upon .
1. is it possible for someone with my credentials ( no work experience , internships in industrial engineering, volunteering experience in rural development) to land up in SIPA/ fletcher/ HKS/ yale jackson by mere GRE score and average LOR?
2. does GGI help with securing admissions in the above mentioned institutions?
3. is a PhD in social sciences/policy/economics/IR a competitive alternative to civil services ?
and thankyou very much for bringing out this wonderful and life saving content out there. nothing can change ones life more than a right mentor at the right time 🙏
1) No. Even if you get in you will not benefit for 3 reasons: 1. Your chances of scholarships are minimal. 2. You will find it extremely hard to get a job in the US. 3. You will not be able to contribute much in the classrooms with no work ex.
2_ Yes and No. We will not write applications for you. At GGI goal is to help people figure out great jobs without formal credentializations. We are cognizant of the fact of how expensive these degrees are - and in many cases, the curriculum isn't updated. However, GGI has a formal partnership with Fletcher and is developing one with Wharton and Tuck School of Business. As of now, Fletcher provides a guaranteed $20,000 scholarship to GGI-Fletcher Graduates (if shortlisted). Additionally, GGI Impact Fellowship is counted as a work experience - where you do get a chance to replicate a real work policy consulting experience. Such experience could further improve your profile.
3. Yes. A very good friend of mine - Dhiraj was an OSD in Niti Aayog (at a rank equivalent to that of Joint Secretary). He wasn't a civil servant (rather a had a PhD in economics from Cambridge).
Regardless of your decisions. I wish you all the very best! :)
@@namanshrivastava thankyou very much for such an elaborate reply.
Its a far dream from remote corner of a country with no stable finance support

I don't know if you are aware or not but UPSC is one of many career ruining exams that happen in India, UPSC is still fine cos at the end of the journey you either get your goal or u get Insane amount of social science knowledge.
let's talk about CA, I have seen and I know so many who have spend 7-10 years ( 6 years assumed normal) in CA giving attempts, learning things which may go totally useless ( thanks to Al) and still slogging in for same degree. CA has passing percentage in single digits 5-8percent in Final level.
The most miserable combination is - Lowr middle class family+ Avg brain+ Family Issues+ no money to even pay for govt colleges - all this together weave a tightly knit web 🕸️ which engulfs you. No matter how hard you try to break, it wouldn't break. It will keep sucking life out of you.
Once I was also CA aspirant...the. One day I quit... and 3 yrs i was in depression...bcz I failed and secondly bcz we don't have money...so I was just depressed...I don't know what to do...I satrted giving tution... for my expenses and today I am 25 unemployed but I came out of depression now I am learning few skills to atleast get a job...that's it...but I am happy atleast I am out of that sadness that depression...I know I am too old...but I try not. To think about my age...and focus on getting job...I even don't know why I am writing this...but I wanted to
Just skipping the video after 42 mins. because i couldn't bear the way she is forcefully trying to own an accent and talk in it, which is not really hers. Its weird.
So what she basically meant to say was that she couldn't land a seat at IFS being a general category candidate 😂 , as if the reserved ones are served a platter without any hardwork lol
it is lol. general category is the merit class. rest are charity cases
Is there any upper age limit to join un.
For some roles, yes! (not for all positions)

Exhilarating podcast....
Decided to give 2 attempts for upsc. 2023 would be 1st. Doesn't mean not putting best in 1st one. If things won't work, I have 2 plans, 3rd one included now i.e. UN.
From depression in graduation days to getting offer letter from UK to refusing it for UPSC now putting best in it, I am growing up. Life is full of possibilities, opportunities and risks.
Thank you so much for this podcast and other videos. 🤍💫
Thanks for your kind words! I wish you all the best. More power to you :)
@@namanshrivastava Thank you 🌼🤝 keep doing such great things.
What's the big deal with UPSC. He anyway scored well in his CAT and got through IIM Kolkata and IIM Ahmedabad and he rejected that. Shows that Tharoor was clear on what he wanted. Most people have no clarity and end up in the rat race.

@Naman Shrivastava firstly thanks for bringing this podcast, such an informative interaction.
I am in my start of thirties. I have tried civil services in my twenties and failed but somehow got into IT, now with a decent paying job. My query - is it possible for me to have a transition into the policy making or governance related role at this age and if possible what should I do to make the transition and in what payscale I can get an opportunity. Kindly help me clarify my query. Thanks in advance.
Yes - the pay scale depends on what you bring to the table. I'm currently advising a few governments in Eastern Europe and my salary is equivalent to that of a partner in BCG/McKinseyey in a similar Geography.
At the same time, there are early entrants who might make less than what an intern might make in the MBBs.
@@namanshrivastava thanks for the reply. Continue with the great work.
