This episode got me quite emotional when I first saw it. The songs were wonderful and I was really pleased that the studying stage of Twilight's character arc was completed. She really deserves this reward, and I'm so happy for her.
My only regret is that I was spoiled on Twilicorn before I watched the episode, otherwise I'd have probably cried or gasped repeatedly in amazement when it happened.
Songs were mindblowing in this, i gotta say i completely agree that Twi deserves this. After all she did for her country so far, and the things she's learned.
Nearly EVERYONE was spoiled about Alicorn Twilight Sparkle before it, so don't feel bad.
***** nor I.I had watched the entirety of the first three seasons in three days almost a year ago on Netflix. I didn't go online at all until I finished it. (Netfix through tv). I am glad that I binged it all at once. I really feel that if you watch the entire show and make sure not to get spoilered(like La Dix here) that you will likely be more open to Twilicorn.
I agree. I never understood all the hate for Twilight turning into a princess. I thought of all the possibilities they could use and take the story and how awesome it was going to be. I agree this seemed like more of a series finale, but the season 4 finale tops it to the max, to the point where I actually got a little sad, teared up. But I know there's going to be a season 5, and if its half as good as season 4, it'll be fantastic! If we know the team behind MLP they know how to work with what they have and I think the next season will be fun!
I knew Twilight is going to become alicorn before I've even started to watch the show... Celestia's Ballad was one of the main reasons one of my friends was able to make me watch a show... that song was beautiful even when I didn't know anything about them.
You know, I think one of the best things about your commentaries is the sheer energy and joy that you express over this show, finding positives even in the less-favored episodes, and always maintaining your positive attitude and outlook. It makes your videos wonderfully addicting, and watching it with you is a lot like watching these episodes again for the first time; at least that's how I feel about it. Keep up the good work, and as always, looking forward to more from you :)

I'm so glad you support Twilight's ascension like I do. She totally deserves this after everything she's been through and done.
The townspeople yelling PINKIE still makes me cry every time. And that's a lot of times, FYI.
For me, it's the part in the speech where it pans across her friends.
And the expression on Rainbow's face in the sad song just hits so hard, seeing the usually confident and boisterous mare looking utterly defeated. It just plain hurts to watch.

Liquid Pride gets me every time.
From the near end of "A True, True, Friend" until the end of the episode I shed some tears. I almost lost it when it showed AJ, Pinkie, RD, Rarity and Flutters with tears in their eyes during the coronation. Celestia's Ballad's background vocals will always send a shiver down my spine. My understanding is that this was originally going to be a series finale. I'm so glad it wasn't. ^_^
Ah the ever-controversial Season 3 finale, the episode that nearly split the fandom in two, the episode that caused many to actually leave the brony community if you can believe it. We were hinted at Twilight Sparkle's ascension to princess-hood from toy artwork months before this aired, and many bronies feared that this would change the show's dynamic forever, and many raged and lashed out. It wasn't fun to experience, let me tell you.
I'm one of the people who didn't mind at all, to be honest, and I am really glad you enjoyed the episode and you embraced it with an open mind. I loved how emotional you got during this episode, especially because you hadn't heard or seen anything about her becoming a princess beforehand, hah. I really feel like this episode could have benefited from being a bit longer, as everything felt a bit rushed upon first viewing, but watching it alongside you made the whole thing fun and emotional again.
Enjoy the movie, and whatever else you decide to watch next!

There have only been a few people who haven't been spoiled for this, and your commentary is probably the best of all of those! It was a bit of a rushed ep -- if only it had been a two-parter it could have been utterly epic -- but those songs! And they even sneaked Derpy in a couple of times, though it's not that obvious. (eg just before the Lyra scene in the end parade.)
You're going to like Season 4. A lot. Especially since you avoid spoilers. Maybe you're not going to love every single episode, but S4 as a whole blows S3 as a whole out of the water IMO. Fantastic commentary!

But seriously, this was my all time favourite episode before season 4, even though I really wanted it to be extended and split into a two- or even three-parter.
Of course the writers said that they consider it as part one with the season 4 premier as part 2 and 3 but I didnt really see it that way

As for becoming a princess-- well, DUH, It was kind of obvious, as the series progressed, from S1E2. I mean, everypony else got a necklace... SHE gets a Big Crown Thingy.
There's a vid out there (or rather here on UA-cam) that I don't recall the name of, but which points out that seasons 1 to 3 pretty much follow -- as far as Twilight goes-- Campbell's "Hero's Journey", or in other words, MLP as monomyth. Look for it. The guy in question is kind of freaking out.

You actually might be the first fully blind commentator on the movie, I think everyone else who marathoned blind was right before it's release. I am excite.

I love watching everyone's initial reaction of being mindfucked by this episode in blind commentaries. XD
About season 4. It's almost over, and there hasn't been an episode that I haven't enjoyed. There is one I thought was pretty ordinary, but the rest of the season is really good.
Those images in their eyes when they regain their memorys... me and some friends screened every single one and searched the episode/scene they belong to. Was pretty hard sometimes^^

At 16:45 if you look closely after Twilight is 'vaporized' the burn mark on the floor is in the shape of her cutie mark.

So here we are in the season finale Im glad that you like it. This is one of my favorite episodes. The songs are amazing I think that could have been a two part episode but it was great. The bad thing about this was the amount of people that complained when this happened even some of them leave the fandom. Now I will wait for the movie :D
The episode could have been a two parter, but being honest, that would have ruined most the feeling, and one of the strong points of the episode is that, everything happens so fast but you don't feel it forced because of the amazing pacing and the songs, a two-parter, or a movie, would have been easier to make, but the feeling would have been different...

Apparently, Hasbro only commissioned for three seasons, so this could have been the series finale, but due to the success of the show, they decided to commission Season 4 and we've got Season 5 in the works now.
they actually paid for 5 seasons so we can look forward to episodes till 2019! (or so I hear)

Again another great commentary. Full of energy and enthusiasm, it's great to see you enjoying the show so much. And now you know why everyone was saying being spoiled was sooooo easy for this one if you came across any Twilight artwork from after this ep came out, and the title for the first season 4 episode is "Princess Twilight Sparkle" :)
I actually absolutely love this episode. It has some flaws from being forced into a 1 parter, but I think the writers did a great job within those constraints. This episode won a Leo award for Best Musical Score in an Animation Program or Series for 2013.
The fact they actually took a story arc for a character all the way through (even if it was a Hasbro mandate) is something I find very refreshing and rare in a lot of television series. The Literary student in me keeps coming out every time I see this episode. Twilight based on comments from Faust was always meant to be groomed by Celestia for a royal position, but demands from Hasbro changed that around and accelerated the timetable. I'm glad the writers were able to pull it off though, and in a way that also does something I don't see too much in episodic television, especially shows aimed at a younger audience, they actually manged to execute a "Hero's Journey" over the course of 3 seasons.
They also aren't afraid to change things up, and like you said this opens up a whole range of new story possibilities. And I'll stop now before I type out a full essay, my English Literature Minor is starting to show :)

I really like how you appreciate practically every episode for what it is, unlike some people. You seem to also see the sort of 'magical charm' this show has, that many quickly become tarnished to. It's always nice to see these genuine first-time reactions and I think that you've done a very good job, especially with not being a native English speaker (Spare a few words and phrases you were incredibly fluent). So, thanks for the entertaining videos, I'm looking forward to season 4! :)

Having only became a brony mid November of last year I sadly saw toys of Princess Twilight Sparkle before seeing this episode so it was spoiled for me too
first seeing Twilight get blasted, then appear in a heavenly place, and then god shows up.... Twilight died and she never even realized it

The reason this season lasted only 13 episodes is because the standard model of children's animation is producing 65-episodes. Many of the cartoons in the 90's were accustom to this rule, with many great shows cancelled after reaching their mark. If and only if the show becomes insanely popular enough more seasons are ordered, but otherwise the animators attempt to make all the episodes feel completely contained, hence why this has the feel of a last episode.
Examples include Taz-Mania, The Snorks, Talespin, C.O.P.S., Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers, Jem, The Legend of Prince Valiant, Silvermotherfuckinghawks, and just about every incarnation of Batman (seriously, not counting its continuation on the WB, the original Batman The Animated Series was exactly 65 episodes long). Even crap like Conan the Adventurer, Rambo and the recent Pound Puppies (YMMV) got this treatment, as well as early generations of MLP.
There are exceptions to the rule of course. Adult animation doesn't usually apply (Daria being the exception to the exception), and real lousy shows get cut back to like 52 or shorter(eg. 2011's Thundercats (YMMV) lasted a mere 26). And just like Batman, Animaniacs, and of course MLP:FIM, should a series become popular enough, a different television network might pick it up and produce more episodes and seasons.
MLP itself has now hit 169 episodes, which is three more than The Flintstones. While still far from being the longest-running animated series (Arthur is still friggin' going, and the less mentioned about Japan the better), it still has reached a milestone among some of the greats. For that, I applaud them.

Wow dude. You know what you did? I really, really disliked this episode ever since it aired (and to douse some conclusions that people like to jump to, not because I hated the idea of Twi being a princess, I didn't hate that like a lot of people actually did). But you're so positive about the show and so immersed into it, you're the first commentator that I felt like rewatching this episode "with", so to speak. And somehow doing this managed to give me a new appreciation for the episode. I think I like it now! Honestly, it's possible that I wanted to actually like it despite all the things that irked me about it so much (that I could still probably list faithfully but noone cares), and I just needed another rewatch, but I think that if it wasn't for your attitude towards it all I'd still remain a grumpy grump if I tried to rewatch it without the commentary.
I wonder if you can perform the same miracle with all the episodes I didn't like in season 4 :D that would be pretty cool!

I'm amazed you got to this episode without knowing what would happen to Twilight Sparkle. The fans already knew when it premiered (thanks to a press release by Hasbro).
In fact, I think the scene where the elements make Twilight vanish was designed to make the audience think, "This is the moment! Here it comes!", only to befuddle us right before a commercial break.

The problem with this episode was that it featured a lot of concepts that nobody expected, like the cutie mark switcharoo or the "alicornication". All those concepts were shown briefly and were not fleshed out as much as they deserved. The fact that this episode was overflowing with songs didn't help, because it took time away to advance the plot. Your reaction depicts this problem quite clearly: You went from one "What?" to another in a matter of seconds. If these concepts were given more time (that means screen time) they could have shone independently. The way it was built though left a considerable ammount of viewers with the feel of this game changer being rushed, even with some of them saying it is solely for toy sales. Though I am pretty sure that the writers had good intentions at heart, the quality didn't ace as much as I expected. At least the episode's quality was saved by the concepts themselves. Without the rush, this could have been the highlight of the franchise, even possibly outshining the season four finale.
5:55 A "Literal Video" was made of this one and one from "Equestria Girls" so if you want to commentate on that I'd wait until after you've commentated on that. So could probably watch them back to back it'd be a bit long but since each is the same length as the original song I'd be doable

There is a fanfic out there where the cannon elements personalities and the elements personality that they were in this episode were from two different timelines and gave backstories on how they became these altered selves can't find the story now but it was on FiMFiction.net.
MMC the episode that broke the fandom in half should've been a two-parter Part 1 where I said above and Part 2 beginning afterwards. Also, the stuff with Miss America during the bumpers didn't help keep fans into the story I bet.

Yes, that was the VA of Celestia, singing Celestia's song in the Celestial Plane of existence... sort of like Luna's Dream Worlds. In this episode we find that Alicorns CAN be created from normal ponies. Although Celestia and Luna are natural Alicorns, it seems that cadence and twilight are 'made' ones... I wonder if they will have Tia and Luna's immortality as well.

Okay, so when Twilight disappears do you all think she had to pass death in order to be reborn as the new Alicorn like a God. Because the Alicorn's in this universe are like God's deities. And before that she was but a mere unicorn. I remember something in the old Greek myths that stated a hero who had to die and then he came back almost had full God level kind of like Hercules but different. I think in order for an Alicorn to be born they had to pass series of test and studies true, but they only become one after they have passed on. I mean Celestia never seems to age and neither do the others much.

The plot feels so rushed and contrived, and no matter how many times I watch it, I'm still confused as to what actually happened.
What was the purpose of that spell? What did it have to do with being an alicorn? Why did Starswirl's lack of friendship hinder his ability to manipulate destiny?
The writers could have gone so deep with this story here, but reduced to one episode it feels subpar and half-baked.
I blame Hasbro, and their stupid movie. THIS should have been the movie.
